Quotes

  • Chakotay : You get on those stairs they'll collapse. We'll both die!

Tom Paris : Yeah... But on the other hand, if I save your butt, your life belongs to me. Isn't that some kind of Indian custom?

    Chakotay : Wrong tribe.

  • Tom Paris : [after "saving" Kim from Quark]  Didn't they warn you about Ferengi at the Academy?

  • [Paris is flirting with the farmer's daughter on the array]

Harry Kim : Paris, she's only a hologram.

Tom Paris : No reason to be rude.

  • Tom Paris : Look, I know those guys told you to stay away from me; and you know what? You ought to listen to 'em. I'm not exactly a good luck charm.

Harry Kim : I don't need anyone to choose my friends for me.

  • Tom Paris : You'd rather die than let me be the one to rescue you?

Chakotay : Fine. Be a fool. If I have to die, at least I'll have the pleasure of watching you go with me.

  • Tom Paris : You asked to see me, Captain?

Captain Kathryn Janeway : Mr. Paris... you have a problem.

[Paris gives her a puzzled look]

Captain Kathryn Janeway : I've invited Chakotay and the other Maquis to become part of this crew. It seemed the only reasonable thing to do under the circumstances.

Tom Paris : Will you provide a bodyguard for me, Captain?

Captain Kathryn Janeway : It seems you already have one.

    Tom Paris : I do?

Captain Kathryn Janeway : Mr. Chakotay said something about his life belonging to you. He'll be taking responsibility for your safety.

Tom Paris : I think I'm going to enjoy this.

Captain Kathryn Janeway : Don't be so sure. He'll also be my First Officer. Everyone aboard this ship will report to him, including the Lieutenant assigned to conn.

    Tom Paris : Me?

Captain Kathryn Janeway : I've entered into the ship's log on this date that I'm granting a field commission of Lieutenant to Thomas Eugene Paris.

  • Tom Paris : Tomato soup.

Voyager Computer : There are 14 varieties of tomato soup available from this replicator; with rice, with vegetables, Bolian-style, with pasta, with...

    Tom Paris : Plain.

Voyager Computer : Specify hot or chilled.

Tom Paris : Hot! Hot, plain tomato soup.

  • Harry Kim : Multiple percussive injuries.

The Doctor : Status of your doctor?

    Harry Kim : He's dead.

    The Doctor : .4 cc's of trianoline.

    Harry Kim : Trianoline?

Tom Paris : We lost our nurse, too.

The Doctor : [preparing a hypospray]  How soon are replacement medical personnel expected?

Harry Kim : That could be a problem. We're pretty far away from replacements right now.

The Doctor : [injecting a patient, then going to another]  Tricorder.

    [Kim hands him one]

The Doctor : [annoyed]  Medical tricorder!

  • Captain Kathryn Janeway : Officially, you'd be a Starfleet observer during the mission.

Tom Paris : Observer? Oh, hell, I'm the best pilot you could have!

Captain Kathryn Janeway : You'll *be* an observer. When it's over, you're cut loose.

Tom Paris : The story of my life.

  • Tom Paris : [trying to save Chakotay from the collapsing stairs]  Isn't there some Indian trick where you can turn yourself into a bird and fly us outta here?

    Chakotay : You're too heavy.

  • Tom Paris : [after being promoted to lieutenant]  For the first time in my life I don't know what to say.

Captain Kathryn Janeway : You've earned this, Tom. I'm only sorry your father won't know.

Tom Paris : Oh, he'll know - when we get back.

  • [last lines]

Captain Kathryn Janeway : Mr. Paris, set a course... for home.

    Tom Paris : Aye, Captain.

  • Chakotay : [learning Tuvok was working on his crew undercover]  I see you had help.

Tom Paris : [sarcastic]  It's good to see you, too, Chakotay.

Chakotay : At least the Vulcan was doing his duty as a Starfleet officer, but you... you betrayed us for what? Freedom from prison? Latinum? What was your price this time?

Captain Kathryn Janeway : You are speaking to a member of my crew. I expect you to treat him with the same respect as you would have me treat a member of yours.

  • Human Doctor : Can I help you?

Tom Paris : Tom Paris, reporting on board.

Human Doctor : Oh, yes. The observer.

Tom Paris : That's me. As a matter of fact, I seem to be observing some kind of problem right now... Doctor.

Human Doctor : I was a surgeon at the hospital on Caldik Prime the same time you were stationed there. We never actually met. Your medical records have arrived from your last posting, Mr. Paris. Everything seems to be in order. The captain asked if you were on board. You should check in with her.

Harry Kim : Uh, I haven't paid my respects to the captain yet, either.

Human Doctor : Well, Mr. Kim, that would be a good thing for a new operations officer to do.

Harry Kim : [cut to them leaving Sickbay]  What was that all about?

Tom Paris : It's a long story, Harry, and I'm tired of telling it. I'm sure someone around here will tell you before long.

  • Tom Paris : You'd like me to lead you to my former colleagues. I was only with the Maquis a few weeks before I was captured, Captain. I don't where most of their hiding places are.

Captain Kathryn Janeway : You know the territory better than anyone we've got.

Tom Paris : What's so important about this particular Maquis ship?

Captain Kathryn Janeway : My chief of security was on board; undercover. He was supposed to report in twice during the last six days. He didn't.

Tom Paris : Maybe it's just your chief of security who's disappeared.

Captain Kathryn Janeway : Maybe. That ship was under the command of another former Starfleet officer named Chakotay. I understand you knew him.

    Tom Paris : That's right.

Captain Kathryn Janeway : The two of you didn't get along too well, I'm told.

Tom Paris : Chakotay will tell you he left Starfleet on principle; to defend his home colony from the Cardassians. I, on the other hand, was forced to resign. He considered me a mercenary, willing to fight for anyone who'd pay my bar bills. The trouble is he was right. I have no problem helping you track down my "friends" in the Maquis, Captain. All I need to know from you is what's in it for me?

Captain Kathryn Janeway : You help us find that ship, we help you at your next outmate review.

  • Captain Kathryn Janeway : Your father taught me a great deal. I was his science officer during the Arias expedition.

Tom Paris : You must be good. My father only accepts the best and the brightest.

Captain Kathryn Janeway : I'm leaving on a mission to find a Maquis ship that disappeared in the Badlands a week ago.

    Tom Paris : I wouldn't if I were you.

    Captain Kathryn Janeway : Really?

Tom Paris : I've never seen a Federation starship that could maneuver through the plasma storms.

Captain Kathryn Janeway : You've never seen Voyager.

  • Captain Kathryn Janeway : Tom Paris? Kathryn Janeway. I served with your father on the Al-Batani. I wonder if we could go somewhere and talk?

    Tom Paris : About what?

Captain Kathryn Janeway : About a job we'd like you to do for us.

Tom Paris : I'm already doing a job... for the Federation.

Captain Kathryn Janeway : I've been told the Rehab Commission is very pleased with your work. They've given me their approval to discuss this matter with you.

Tom Paris : Well, then I guess I'm yours.

  • Tom Paris : Stadi, you're changing my mind about Betazoids.

    Lieutenant Stadi : Good.

Tom Paris : Oh that wasn't a compliment. Until today, I always considered your people warm and sensual.

Lieutenant Stadi : I can be "warm and sensual."

Tom Paris : Just not to me.

Lieutenant Stadi : Do you always fly at women at warp speed, Mr. Paris?

Tom Paris : Only when they're in visual range.

  • Tom Paris : We may be stuck with you for a while, Doc.

The Doctor : There's no need for concern. I'm capable of treating any injury or disease. - No concussion, you'll be fine - in a month.

  • Tom Paris : [Tom is in the Mess Hall and sees Harry at a table having what looks like a very intense conversation with Lieutenant Commander Cavit and the ship's doctor, and after ordering tomato soup from a replicator he moves over to join them but Cavit and the Doctor get up and leave]  There, you see? I told you it wouldn't take long.

Harry Kim : Is it true?

Tom Paris : Was the accident my fault? Yes, pilot error. But it took me awhile to admit it.

[Tom tries some of the soup but it tastes revolting]

Tom Paris : Oh! 14 varieties and they can't even get plain tomato soup right.

Harry Kim : [Harry steers the conversation back to what he really wants to talk about]  They said you falsified reports.

    Tom Paris : That's right.

    Harry Kim : Why?

Tom Paris : What's the difference? I lied.

Harry Kim : But then you came forward and you admitted that it was your fault?

Tom Paris : I'll tell you the truth, Harry. All I had to do was keep my mouth shut and I was home free. But I couldn't. The ghosts of those three dead officers came to me in the middle of the night and taught me the true meaning of Christmas. So I confessed. Worst mistake I ever made but not my last. After they cashiered me out of Starfleet I went out looking for a fight and found the Maquis, and on my first assignment I was caught.

Harry Kim : It must have been especially tough for you, being the son of an admiral.

Tom Paris : Frankly, I think it was tougher on my father than it was on me.

    [gets up to leave]

Tom Paris : Look, I know those guys told you stay away from me. And you know what? You oughta' listen to them. I'm not exactly a good luck charm.

Harry Kim : I don't need anyone to choose my friends for me.
