Blackberry Smoke’s Brit Turner endured a harrowing 2022, suffering a heart attack in August of that year and then undergoing brain surgery in November after a tumor was discovered during a routine Mri. Turner continued to battle glioblastoma (brain cancer) over the next couple years, until his death this past weekend at 57. Through it all, his strength and perseverance never faltered, especially as he continued to tour with Blackberry Smoke whenever he could.
Nowhere was Turner’s fortitude and love of music more clear than during his first show back with Blackberry Smoke on Nov.

Last February, Caroline Polachek shared one of the best albums of 2023: her fourth solo LP, Desire, I Want to Turn Into You. Now, on Valentine’s Day, she’s back with Desire, I Want to Turn Into You: Everasking Edition, a new version of the album featuring seven additional tracks and four new songs.
The new Everasking Edition includes the previously-released duet version of “Butterfly Net” featuring Weyes Blood, as well as the song Polachek premiered on Stephen Colbert’s show last October, “Dang.” Also featured are four new songs, titled “Meanwhile,” “Coma,” “Gambler’s Prayer,” and “Spring Is Coming with a Strawberry In the Mouth,” the latter of which is a cover of an Operating Theatre song.
Rounding out the expanded tracklist is an acoustic version of her song “I Believe.” Last year, Polachek delivered an unplugged rendition of the tune for her whimsical Tiny Desk concert.

Character departures are inevitable for most shows.
That doesn't mean we have to like them. Sometimes, a character has to go because it's necessary for the story.
Other times, the actor moves on to a new role, and the character can't continue without them.
Now and then, a character's time on a show comes to an end in a way that leaves us brokenhearted and feeling betrayed by the writers.
These exits took us by surprise, and not in a good way.
Alex Karev's Dear John Letters on Grey's Anatomy
If you ask us, Alex Karev had one of the best character glow-ups of all time, with the kind of character development we can normally only dream about. His transformation from snarky, too-cool-for-school jock to the mature, brilliant man he became was one for the ages.

A funny thing happened on the way to the presumed two-horse awards-season race between 2023 toon feature juggernauts. Netflix’s Nimona picked a fight today with Gkids’ Hayao Miyazaki hit The Boy and the Heron and Sony’s global smash Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, scoring a leading nine Annie Awards nominations. The others managed seven noms apiece.
All three are up for the marquee Best Feature prize along with Toho’s anime Suzume, which also landed seven Annie noms, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem from Paramount and Nickelodeon Film, which got six.
Notably missing from the top toon feature race is Disney/Pixar’s Elemental, which also scooped six nominations from Asifa-Hollywood. Meanwhile, Universal/Illumination The Super Mario Bros. Movie — the No. 2 film of 2023, which plumbed $1.36 billion worldwide — was clogged up with just a single Annie nom for Jack Black’s voice work as the villainous Bowser.

Snoop Dogg announced Thursday on social media that he is “giving up smoke.”
Fans quickly responded with doubtful comments such as, “But not weed, right?”
The “Drop It Like It’s Hot” rapper has his own cannabis line called “Leafs by Snoop,” which he launched in 2005. And one of his signature team-ups with Dr. Dre, 1999’s “The Next Episode,” ends with the immortal line, “Smoke weed every day.”

One of the most intimate, moving documentaries I had the opportunity to see at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year was Anna Hints’ Smoke Sauna Sisterhood, which went on to not only picked up the Directing Award of World Cinema Documentary at the festival but also secured Estonia’s official selection as their Oscar entry for Best International Feature. Now set for a U.S. release on November 24 by Greenwich Entertainment, the new trailer has arrived.
Here’s the official synopsis: “Women share their innermost secrets and intimate experiences inside an Estonian smoke sauna. Cleansing their bodies and baring their souls, they embrace the healing power of sisterhood. Anna Hints’ Sundance-winning documentary celebrates the centuries-old smoke sauna tradition, recognized on the Unesco Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.”

Welcome to Victoria Monét's Jaguar universe. It took some time to get to what she calls her "level-up" era, but the whiz songwriter-turned-superstar-soloist is finally ready to unleash her long-awaited album "Jaguar II."
Monét's new LP, the second and final installment in her series, releases on Aug. 25, a little over three years after the original arrived in the midst of the pandemic. Both influenced and inspired by one of her favorite eras, the funk and soul of the 1970s, the "Smoke" singer calls "Jaguar II" the "more developed, confident, sure, better older sister." And she's ready for it to have its mammoth moment.
Unlike the sequel - which has already been lauded as one of the most anticipated R&b releases of the year - Monét wasn't able to embrace the fullness of its predecessor's arrival in the summer of 2020 because her career was on pause, along with the...

Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter and producer, Victoria Monét winds up summer playlists even more with the official follow up music video to her latest smash single, “On My Mama”, just released!
The 2000s-nostalgic video overflows with southern flare while being accented with ground-scraping lowriders, signature Y2K street style, cameos from Black fraternities and sororities and Hbcu culture, various dance numbers from renowned choreographer, Sean Bankhead and special cameos from Monét’s own mama and intuitively talented 2-year-old daughter, Hazel Monét. The “On My Mama” visual reminds of a significant era in the early 2000s when underground southern music began to take over national airwaves and catch the eye of people across the globe.

The dignity of labor is explored with gentle humor and a very melancholy sense of joie de vivre in Wim Wenders’ second 2023 Cannes entry after his 3D documentary Anselm. Shot entirely in Japan, with very little English spoken, Perfect Days is an unusual film from a westerner since it does nothing to “other” a country that is often romanticized as a series of specific cultural signifiers. It’s a compliment to say that Jim Jarmusch could have made it.
The working title for the film was apparently Tokyo Toilet, the name of the company that employs the film’s gnomic central character, Hirayama (Koji Yakusho). The first half-hour is a masterclass in economy, and could even pass muster as a short: Hirayama rises from his bachelor futon, goes to work, cleans the city’s conveniences with a dignified gusto, then relaxes...

Ashley Judd grew up in the spotlight. As the daughter of the iconic country music singer Naomi Judd, she was raised with an understanding of fame. And she has had to navigate her own way through the trials and tribulations of life as a media sensation. Still, Judd developed early on a sense of what her own needs were. Over the years, Judd has opened up about why she has chosen not to have children of her own. Instead, she prefers to focus her attention on orphaned and underprivileged youth.

Caroline Polachek has unveiled her second solo album, Desire, I Want to Turn into You. Listen to the LP below.
Featuring long-released cuts “Bunny Is a Rider” and “Billions” as well as more recently premiered singles “Welcome to My Island” and Song of the Week “Blood and Butter,” Desire, I Want to Turn into You follows Polachek’s 2019 solo debut Pang.
Of the title, the artist explained, “One, it can be read as being about the ‘you.’ We all know that feeling of falling in love, of wanting to obsessively learn from and become that person. But on the other hand, maybe desire is the thing you want to turn into itself.”
Polachek is set to kick off a lengthy world tour in support of the album, which features a revolving door of esteemed indie rock support from George Clanton, Toro Y Moi, Sudan Archives, Magdalena Bay, Alex G, and Ethel Cain.

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
To help button up "Titanic" week here at /Film, welcome to part two of the special two-part edition of this column. Earlier this week, we looked back at how "Tomorrow Never Dies," the second Pierce Brosnan "James Bond" effort, drew the short straw and had to go up against James Cameron's massive blockbuster in its opening weekend — and yes, 007 lost that fight. But what about the movie that finally dethroned "Titanic" at the box office? That honor, strangely enough, goes to 1998's "Lost in Space" which was, itself, a pretty sizable flop. Yet, it does have the honor of being the film that ended the longest winning streak in box office history.

Lollapalooza 2022 kicked off on Thursday in Chicago’s Grant Park with headliners Metallica, Lil Baby, and Caroline Polachek. Like the variety offered at the topline of the fest, the day featured an eclectic mix of music. From TikTok stars to rock royalty and the return of the Kidzapalooza stage for the first time in three years, there was something for every age group on Day 1. And if there was an underlying theme beyond appealing to a wide swath of fans, a handful of artists with famous kinfolk are taking center stage throughout the four-day festival.

William Hurt was tall, blond, and attractive, and the product of a prep-school education and training at Julliard. For someone whose first movie came out in 1980 — the year Ronald Reagan was elected and “The Official Preppy Handbook” was published — he could have had a much different career as an actor, one that was blander, less eccentric, and less daring.
But the approachable exterior camouflaged a complicated, difficult artist, one who constantly challenged himself, even when dealing with his own inner demons. As Mark Harris noted on Twitter upon hearing of Hurt’s death at the age of 71, “Hurt always seemed profoundly uncomfortable being a good-looking leading man, which may be one reason that his performance in ‘Broadcast News’ is absolutely perfect — he understood that he was playing someone who was miscast.”

Next month’s Criterion Channel selection is here, and as 2021 winds down further cements their status as our single greatest streaming service. Off the top I took note of their eight-film Jia Zhangke retro as well as the streaming premieres of Center Stage and Malni. And, yes, Margaret has been on HBO Max for a while, but we can hope Criterion Channel’s addition—as part of the 63(!)-film “New York Stories”—opens doors to a more deserving home-video treatment.
Aki Kaurismäki’s Finland Trilogy, Bruno Dumont’s Joan of Arc duology, and Criterion’s editions of Irma Vep and Flowers of Shanghai also mark major inclusions—just a few years ago the thought of Hou’s masterpiece streaming in HD was absurd.
