Very good Christmas movie
toronaga26 November 2005
I didn't plan to see this. Instead I just sat down while my wife was watching it and ended up seeing it all the way through. It was difficult not to get emotionally involved, mostly because of the acting of Maureen O'Hara. Yes, some of the plot mechanisms are clichés. Yes, the overall message of knowing what to truly value most has been done many times by Hollywood. But the understated performances from O'Hara and Richard Thomas along with a good story really make this movie well worth watching. I ended up being so affected that it drove me to write this review in the hope that it might influence someone else to see it. And perhaps enjoy it as much as I did. Merry Christmas everyone...

Nice, family-friendly film for the holidays
inkblot119 October 2006
Richard (Richard Thomas) and Keri (Annette O'Toole) have moved to a new city near ski country. They sold their house in order to get Richard's ski shop off the ground, instead living in a cramped apartment with their daughter, Jenna. Keri sees an ad for a couple needed to take care of an older lady in her home. The home turns out to be a mansion and the lady chooses Richard's family to be her caretakers. Keri is ecstatic, as they are given a complete wing of the large home for their quarters and her duties are not very taxing. But, the lady of the house is sad and lonely and harbors many secrets. Also, there is a mysterious music box in the attic that plays music on its own, at times. Richard begins to have strange dreams as well. What is going on here? This is a lovely story about love, family, and friendship. Thomas, O'Toole, and Maureen O'Hara are excellent as the key players, who learn valuable lessons in giving and receiving love. The script is humorous and heart warming, although far-fetched at times. If you would like a new tradition in film at holiday times, this movie is a great choice. It upholds the values everyone should hold dear.

Sweetly sentimental as a Hallmark card...but well done...
Doylenf24 June 2007
This is a handsomely produced tear-jerker, nicely played by MAUREEN O'HARA, RICHARD THOMAS and ANNETTE O'TOOLE and obviously aimed toward the Christmas market with a sweet tale about a mysterious Christmas BOX residing in the attic of an old lady's mansion.

Maureen O'Hara is still a pleasure to look at and listen to in the role of a rather crotchety, firm-minded elderly lady who is in need of household help and accepts Thomas and O'Toole, along with their young daughter, when they apply for the job. Thomas needs the extra money to run a ski shop but is not exactly fond of O'Hara and her ways. It's his daughter, Jenna, who eventually does establish a bond with the woman and more revelations soon come about with respect to the mysterious Christmas box in the attic and O'Hara's past.

It's strictly sentimental stuff, so be advised that the pace is on the slow side as the character revelations are gradually made clear. But if you like warm-hearted tales of Christmas (or any of the holidays for that matter), you can't go wrong with this one.

Summing up: Handsomely produced with fine performances, well worth viewing.

Very Touching
davisboy80314 December 2006
Mrs.O'Hara has truly aged gracefully, I saw her on Larry King Live when she turned 80 and she quoted " I don't feel like it". Her looks haven't faded a bit , she is just older, and something that really shocked me was her voice, her vocals are still as strong and compelling from her films of the golden age. This film caught my attention when I saw it on the HALLMARK channel 12/13/06, once I saw the cast credit I had stay and watch and Im very glad I did. The film almost made me cry it. She as very strict and to admit quite dynamic portrayal of a sad, wealthy and compassionate widow. This for me has been one of the best Christams films I've ever seen. Im looking forward to seeing MRS.MAUREEN in future upcoming films, because she STILL GOT IT !!!!!!!!

I love the cast but
Christmas-Reviewer20 October 2016
This film for some reason I did not care for. I love the cast. I thought the story was over reaching.

Recurring dreams and a discovery follow when a businessman (Richard Thomas), his wife (Annette O'Toole) and daughter move in with an elderly widow (Maureen O'Hara) who needs help. The couple see the woman in different ways. He sees her as a (Rhymes with Witch) and she sees the lady as "Sad and alone".

Clues about the old woman past are nowhere to be found in the home but as a friendships grow the woman's guard comes down

I can not fault the actors performances in this movie. They are excellent. Maybe I was tired when I watched this I will give it another try next year. If my mind changes so will the review. The reason why I will watch this again is because so many people like this film that I think I might of missed something.

The Christmas Box Will Teach You Something Meaningful!
classicmovieman24 December 2007
I recently watched The Christmas Box and loved it! Maureen O'Hara gave a great performance, the story truly had me interested, and the overall mystery of the movie kept me guessing.

Maureen O'Hara, now in her older years, gave a great performance as a stern, sensible woman. She plays her character so convincing that I now have a hard time watching Miracle on 34th Street the same way! The story is not like a Hallmark movie where something goes wrong, someone fixes it, and everybody lives happily ever after. This movie keeps you on your toes and will eventually teach you something that you can carry with you for the rest of your life.

The Christmas Box is most often referred to as a Christmas story, but I think that it is more than that. It has a bit of mystery mixed in, and just when you think you have the "question answered", the story takes a little twist.

This is a family fun movie with a great theme. Although younger children will more than likely not understand it, it is a fine way to spend quality time with your older kids.

Good cast for a more somber Christmas movie
SimonJack1 February 2019
"The Christmas Box" is the first story by best-selling author Richard Paul Evans to be made into a movie. The story of the book is interesting in itself. Evans wrote the story for his children and self-published it in 1993. When it became popular in his home state of Utah, a major publisher put the book out. It's the first book ever to reach The New York Times No. 1 spot in both the hardback and the paperback editions.

The TV movie was made the same year the story was published for mass distribution. The story differs considerably from the usual type of Christmas time films. It's a combination drama and fantasy. The box has very little to do with the story, but it's different enough to raise one's curiosity. The movie has a good cast with Maureen O'Hara, Richard Thomas and Annette O'Toole. O'Hara was 75 at the time and appeared in only two more TV movies before she retired at age 80.

The movie holds one's interest with a sense of mystery about O'Hara's character, Mrs. Mary Parkin. That mystery extends to her late husband who apparently became quite wealthy but was often away from home. A third mystery was the Parkin house. A fourth is gradually revealed, but it's not too hard to guess what it is early on.

This is a more serious film for the Christmas season. It provides a refreshing break from the frequent fare of fluffy, light-hearted romances sprinkled with humor or syrup.

Really enjoyed this movie
carson980624 December 2006
This movie was very enjoyable. It was a sweet story with great actors & a very good script. Richard Thomas & Maureen O'Hara always do a wonderful job, as did Annette O'Toole. The script & dialog were not predictable or boring & the ending was not disappointing & had an excellent message. It is a story of love and lesson, without being overdone or boring. At times, it was very funny, also. One of our favorite holiday movies is "One Special Night" with Julie Andrews & James Garner. We will add this movie to our list, as well. We would recommend seeing this movie for a wonderful, heartwarming Christmas story.

Excellent cast
Jackbv12331 December 2018
There are some quality people in this movie and it shows.

This is not a Christmas Rom/Com. There is no developing romance. The tone is more somber than festive. The story lays a deep foundation for what is to come, but it is also slow. It doesn't help that Richard is so annoying for so much of the film.

There is a mystic aspect resulting from Richards dreams that bleed over into his waking reality. There is some suspense as to what is going on.

The soundtrack is a little heavy at times.

A few reviewers have commented that there is too much religion. There is some preaching but it is limited and the mysticism mingles with the religion.

Plugging religion
Humpty-Dumpty225 June 2015
Most Christmas stories tend to focus on the holiday aspect and minimize religious/doctrinal overtones. This film, on the other hand, is overtly religious, complete with quotations from the New Testament, such as "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son" (John 3:16), and exhortations such as "Faith, is believing in something that you can't really see", as if that's a good thing. The overt religious plug in this film can be quite off-putting for the non-religious.

In contrast, 'Miracle on 34th Street' (1947), also starring Maureen O'Hara, succeeds in telling a warm and sweet Christmas story without plugging religion.

By the way, you will notice that the little girl in 'The Christmas Box' is a dead ringer for Natalie Wood in 'Miracle on 34th Street'. I don't think that's accidental.

One of Hallmark's best films
Soledad-216 January 2001
I cannot understand the low rating of this movie. I have truly enjoyed The Christmas Box and believe it's a marvelous holiday movie. The acting was excellent and, once again, Maureen O'Hara proves that she is a true star. The Christmas Box is a film that could rival A Season for Miracles and It's a Wonderful Life. I highly recommend this movie, one of Hallmark's best films. Don't miss it!

Great cast overcomes corny storyline
srlucado26 December 2007
"The Christmas Box" tries to mix together several elements--corny melodrama, supernatural thriller, redemptive tale--but to my mind succeeds best at showing what good actors can do with fairly mediocre material. In the opening shot I thought, "Wow, got to be a Hallmark TV Movie"--which it is, I learned from the closing credits. That should tell you about all you need to know. Richard Thomas is quite good as the husband/father who needs to learn a lesson, and of course Maureen O'Hara would be great reading the weekly supermarket ad, so she makes this movie was very watchable. The movie has a "secret" that the plot hinges on, but if you haven't guessed it by the first ten minutes, you're not paying attention. That removed a lot of the thrust of the story for me, but it was still enjoyable going along for the ride. It's got a lot of sentimentality, but if a movie can't be sentimental at Christmas, when can it?

The best film
mwilows28 July 2006
This movie is great!

A must see.

I even watched it in July.

Maureen O'Hara is a class act, and Richard Thomas is a gem. The movie just gets you in the mood.

I love the fact that it starts with the Thanksgiving holiday working its way up to Christmas. The film has a feeling of Christmas' past. The moment of decorating the tree was heartwarming. The portrayal of the little girl and her love is also a warm feeling. The caring for Mrs. Parkin is remarkable. The end was tearful, but also joyful.

Very good
Hollywood_Yoda19 May 2003
Before I watched this movie, or read the book, I didn't think it would be very good. Look at what I would have missed if I hadn't done either. It was truly a wonderful, charming movie, as a small family moves in with an older lady. If you would like to know what happens, I advise you to watch the movie. I really enjoyed both the book and the movie, and you will too. I give it a 9 out of 10.

Wonderful film.
ncisabbyfan309 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
We've made it a tradition every Christmas to sit down and watch this movie. It's a heart-warming tale that teaches us all about life, death, family, and the love that God has for all of us. The only reason I did not give this film a perfect 10 is because it could have done without the dream sequences of the angel whispering Richard's name. To me, it was a little creepy but the meaning of the dreams is revealed near the end. Wonderful casting too, especially the legendary Maureen O'Hara as the elderly home owner who has a bad attitude about the family at first but as time goes on, she begins to adore them as if they were her own family. Richard Thomas was wonderful as Richard Evans, the owner of a ski company that did not like the thought of moving in to the old lady's house at the beginning but when he learns the truth about Mary's tragic past, he puts aside his reservations about her and stays with her in the hospital in her final moments of life. If you don't mind a tear-jerking Christmas film, this is the perfect one for you.

A heartwarming and meaningful Christmas movie!
OllieSuave-0076 December 2014
This is a made-for-TV Christmas movie starring Hollywood legend Maureen O'Hara as Mary Parkin, a widow who is being cared for by ski-shop owner Richard Evans (Richard Thomas) and his wife, Keri (Annette O'Toole). They moved into Mary's estate after Richard struggles to balance his family and career life.

As with many families, there is a husband or wife who seem to put work over family. This movie beautifully depicts Mary giving the career-oriented Richard several lectures in having a healthy family life and has him guessing what the greatest gift one could have is - as it is revealed by the end of the film.

There are quite a few sappy moments, but the characters were well-acted for the most part and the plot was quite solid, giving us a pretty captivating film with many heartfelt dramatic moments. In addition to the drama, there is also a touch of fantasy elements that give the film a bit of suspense and intrigue.

Overall, a good one to watch during Christmas time.

The Great Maureen O'Hara stars in The Christmas Box
atkinsnedryart11 December 2020
Maureen O'Hara my candidate for the most beautiful woman ever to grace the Silver Screen with a justly awarded Honorary Oscar for her performances in the Hunchback of Notre Dame, How Green Was My Valley, The Quiet Man, The Parent Trap, McClintock and Only The Lonely stars in this beautiful film.

Ms. O Hara does well in this film and is ably supported by Richard Thomas. The story is simple: A rich old Lady takes in a family and finds love and com fort. Ms. O Hara a skilled actress plays the starring role perfectly.

I recommend this film for it s moral lesson but of course yo see a Great Star Maureen O Hara who worked with John Waynr, James Stewart, Henru Fonda, Jackie Gleason, Charles Laughton, in her great career.

Very touching
VetteRanger6 December 2019
In this movie a couple with a five-year old daughter move into a rich widow's house as caretakers. The father is busy building a business -- too busy according to some. His employer seeks to lead him to awareness of that situation.

Richard Thomas does rather too good a job of playing against type as a real jerk. His dodges his daughter, argues with his wife about how little time he can spend at home, and often takes a sarcastic manner with Mary, the rich widow lady.

The real treat here is Maureen O'Sullivan, a favorite of ours. She occasionally displays the fire that made her so unique in her younger days. And I've always liked Annette O'Toole, who plays the wife.

We were a bit nervous starting this film, as we'd recently seen the Richard Thomas vehicle where he was trapped with Santa, et al, at the North Pole. That movie was terrible, and in large part due to off-target acting by our favorite John-Boy.

This movie redeemed his hand at a Christmas story. While I thought the story could have been deeper and could have showed hints of his awakening a bit sooner, it was touching and well worth the watch.

Recommended.

Everything A Christmas Movie Should Be
SusieSalmonLikeTheFish22 December 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Sure, it's a little religious so if you're not Christian (I'm an atheist) it can get on your nerves, but The Christmas Box is everything a Christmas movie should be. Unlike Elf (2003) or Prancer (1989), The Christmas Box has no crude humor and it isn't too hokey.

This movie features a slightly dysfunctional family, but not so much that it makes the movie depressing. There's no swearing, no fart noises, no nudity and nothing that'd make it inappropriate for children. I put it on for my younger brother last night and he loved it. The soundtrack was great, the acting wasn't bad and the plot was creative.

If you want a nice, family-friendly holiday movie to watch, look no further! The Christmas Box isn't perfect but it's one of those movies that'll have you remembering the nostalgia of childhood Christmases in your past, rather than running for the door to go puke in the snow the way Elf and Prancer do.

Even with the corny and clichéd story line, thanks to the acting it was a very touching seasonal film
TheLittleSongbird24 May 2010
Now I love Christmas films, Scrooge(1951), It's a Wonderful Life, Miracle On 34th Street(1947) and the first two Home Alone movies all to name a few. That said, while not quite a classic, The Christmas Box was a lovely film to watch. And along with The Reading Room, it is for me one of the better Hallmark films. I do agree that the story line is corny and clichéd, but what made the Christmas Box so watchable was the suitably understated acting and a very poignant ending. The direction is good, the pacing is efficient enough to not make the film too sappy and the music is a beauty. The script does have a touch of honesty and heart as well, that I did appreciate. But the acting was what made the film. I cannot say I care for Richard Thomas that much, but his acting is very understated here and it works. Annette O' Toole is as lovely as ever, while Maureen O' Hara is a sheer pleasure in this film. Overall, very nicely done and moving. 8/10 Bethany Cox

stephen king conspiracy
knicksic17 September 2009
Warning: Spoilers
So I heard a really crazy theory about the Christmas Box... It seems that the original story was actually written by Stephen King, under the pen name Richard Paul Evans. Apparently, SK didn't want to compromise the integrity of his genre, so he adopted the pseudonym. This cherished Christmas tale is actually a whimsical, warmhearted version of The Shining. Here is the evidence: 1. Two major characters, Richard Thomas and Annette O'Toole, appear in both a past Stephen King movie (IT) and in the Christmas Box. If you don't believe me, google both of their names together.

2. Both the Shining and the Christmas Box portray families with a mother, father, and a single, young child.

3. These families share other similarities--both have recently relocated to a new place--one on a ski resort and the other to a ski town (where the father is setting up a ski lodge!).

4. Both fathers are extremely work-oriented and this causes considerable strain on their relationships with their wives.

5. Both fathers are plagued by dreams or visions that occur shortly after moving the new place. This causes tension with both couples, yet in each case, the children understand the situation on a deeper level.

6. Both children form strong bonds unrelated adults who try to help them through personal crises.

7. Character names in the Christmas Box have strong ties to SK's work: the 6 characters in the Christmas Box were: Richard Evans, Mary Parkin, Keri Evans, Jenna Evans, George, Stephen Hoover, and two unnamed characters. Clearly, Richard could be tied to SK through both SK's other pen name, Richard Bachman, and the fact that Richard is a recurrent character in many SK stories (The Shining contains the character Dick Halloran=RICHARD) or it could be that Richard was named after the actor that played him, much like Jack in the Shining was named after Jack Nicholson. Keri Evans is named for the title character of SK's Carrie. George has appeared as a character name in numerous SK works, including IT and Dolores Claiborne (Dolores's maiden name was St. GEORGE). Stephen Hoover could be named for SK, himself! This might just be a lot (7) coincidences, or it could be that SK, desperate to extend his creative forces far outside of the horror genre, adopted the alternate name Richard Paul Evans and began writing inspirational, family-oriented, Christmas stories.
