Actor Bobby Deol, who won praise from all quarters for his performance in the blockbuster film ‘Animal’, has said that the director of his debut film, Shekhar Kapur, opted out of the film because of the legacy of his father Dharmendra.
Bobby appeared with his brother Sunny on the latest episode of the streaming comedy show ‘The Great Indian Kapil Show’, and opened up on his debut film ‘Barsaat’.
When host Kapil Sharma asked if Bobby or the director was scared to launch him, given the massive popularity of his father Dharmendra and elder brother Sunny Deol, Bobby replied: “Maybe that’s why Shekhar ran away. ‘Bhed Chaal’ is a Hindi proverb very much used in relation to the Hindi film industry. It means that one huge success is followed by numerous other attempts. Original ideas are at a premium in the Hindi film industry. The makers either depend on a foreign film, or a novel, or a South Indian film for a subject.
Filmmakers always want to play safe because the risk factor is always high. The distributor, while being wined and dined, gets a sales pitch, like “Zanjeer se kam nahi hamari picture…” and such. Many smaller-budget imitations of ‘Sholay’, ‘Zanjeer’, ‘Deewaar’ and other such films flooded the market. That is to say, if one action film worked, many more were certain to follow.
With the introduction of the video format followed by CDs, the trend changed to copying Hollywood films. A star was sent two videos or discs to watch, and they were...

Among the various promotional posters of the rom-com movie musical romantic comedy ‘Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar’ (Tjmm) directed by Luv Ranjan, there is one that has a unique nostalgic aura. In that poster, charming heroine Shraddha Kapoor is bending backwards and cozily resting on the macho arm of her screen-hero Ranbir Kapoor.
Those familiar with Raj Kapoor’s major-hit musical movie ‘Barsaat’ (1949) and its popular posters and the Rk Studios banner logo-emblem, may recall the uncanny striking similarity. Where Raj Kapoor is shown fondly holding his heroine Nargis on his right arm in a similar fashion and has clutched a violin instrument in his other left hand.
In the poster of ‘Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar’, which has slightly different poses with Shraddha swaying more towards the camera and Ranbir looking upwards. Also, there is no musical instrument clutched by Ranbir Kapoor in his (empty) left hand. The outspoken Ranbir has...

Raj Kapoor’s naive innocence, as seen in “Mera joota hai Japani” to “Sab kuch seekha hamne”, Dilip Kumar’s restrained sorrow in “Toote hue khwabon” or “Yeh mera diwanapan hai”, Shammi Kapoor’s exuberant ebullience in “Chahe koi mujhe jungli kahe”, or Dev Anand’s cheerful jauntiness in “Khoya khoya chand” to “Gaata rahe mera dil” — all owe their origin to one man.
One of Hindi cinema’s most inspired, capable yet self-effacing wordsmiths, acknowledged duly by his peers — Raj Kapoor called him his “Pushkin” — and seen as inspiration by a later generation of lyricists, especially Gulzar, Shailendra, born Shankardas Kesarilal on this day (August 30) in 1923, left an indelible impact on film songs.

Bobby Deol completes 25 years in Bollywood and his elder brother, action star Sunny Deol, fondly recalls seeing him grow up in the film industry over the years.
Sunny Deol, who was already at the peak of superstardom in 1995 when Bobby took his Bollywood bow with Rajkumar Santoshi's "Barsaat", has been a steady voice of reason and guidance for his younger brother, in an industry where pitfalls and failure are as commonplace as glamour and fame.
"I always told him to be disciplined, get up early, be active and do workouts. Bob at that age was more into parties and stuff. I would discourage him from all that. He has grown up. Earlier, he used to be with me on shoot at times, my dad's shoot also. He had groomed himself," Sunny told Ians.

There is a lot of buzz around Aditya Pancholi's son Sooraj Pancholi and Suniel Shetty's daughter Athiya Shetty being launched by Salman Khan's production Hero, which is a remake of Subhash Ghai's blockbuster of 80s. However, star kids (especially two new faces) getting swanky launch pads in Bollywood with grooming and exposure is not a new thing. To celebrate the Indian film industry's centenary year, here are 10 essential movies – from a silent film about the life of the Buddha to a violent gangster epic
Prem Sanyas/The Light of Asia (Franz Osten, 1925)
Reading this on mobile? Click here to view
Among the few silent films that remain are three Indo-German co-productions that predate the arrival of the German technicians and directors who worked in the Bombay Talkies studio in the 1930s. The Light of Asia was shot in India but edited and processed in Germany and intertitled in English. The script was adapted from Sir Edwin Arnold's epic poem The Light of Asia (1861) while the opening credits proclaim it was "Shown by Royal Command at Windsor Castle, April 27 1926" and that it benefited greatly from help offered by the Maharaja of Jaipur. The film shows westerners touring India (Mumbai, Delhi, Varanasi) who come to Bodh Gaya, the site of Gautam Buddha's Enlightenment.
