Roku Channel Is The Latest Streamer To Remove Original Programs, Including Reno 911 Revival
Image
R.I.P. Quibi, again.

It seems even the Roku Channel is not free from The Great Streaming Purge of the 2020s. According to a report in Variety, over 35 notable Roku Original shows are to be removed from the streaming service sometime in the near future. This comes after multiple other services have removed shows and movies, many of them high-profile releases, from their feeds in order to cut costs. HBO Max — now merely Max — infamously removed a lot of their original films back in August of 2022, while multiple TV shows and movies were taken off of Hulu and Disney+ in May of 2023 for similar reasons. One might assume that a free, ad-supported service like the Roku Channel would be free from the caprices of the streaming market, but that is not so. The line of Roku Originals will be brought to an end.

Roku Originals, some may recall, were not Roku originals.

Image
Exclusive: The Roku Channel has a job on its hands to manage its recently acquired library of Quibi shows and has hired the shortform service’s former exec Brian Tannenbaum to help on the non-scripted side.

Deadline understands that Tannenbaum, who was a senior content executive and programming lead in the shortform streaming service’s alternative and unscripted team, has joined the technology company to head up alternative content for The Roku Channel.

Sources have told Deadline that Tannenbaum’s priority is to handle the non-scripted portion of the Quibi content, dealing with producers and talent as it plans to roll out these shows on The Roku Channel later this year.

The majority of these non-scripted shows aired on Quibi during its brief window of operation, but there were a handful that didn’t – some that were completed before it shutdown and others that hadn’t finished production. Tannenbaum will...

Rip Quibi, a Mess That Had More Talent Than It Knew What to Do With (Column)
Image
Well before Quibi debuted, it seemed inevitable that the service was doomed. Sure, it didn’t help that a streaming platform dedicated to short-form videos had the incredible misfortune to drop during a global pandemic that confined millions to their homes with way more time than they knew what to do with. But it only took a few minutes skimming through the app to understand that Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman’s very concept of Quibi was flawed, pandemic or no. With no immediate ability to watch content on anything but a phone screen, no thought of letting viewers screenshot shows in order to share them, and no compelling answer to “isn’t this just expensive YouTube?”, Quibi didn’t have a grasp on what its audience might want until well after it launched.

In recent weeks, as the writing on the wall got clearer and clearer, it’s been...

Keke Palmer To Star In ‘Alice’ From Writer, Director Krystin Ver Linden & Steel Springs Pictures
Image
Keke Palmer has signed on to executive produce and star as the title character in Alice, written by Krystin Ver Linden, who will also direct the feature, marking her directorial debut. The character-driven thriller is inspired by the true events of a woman of servitude in 1800s Georgia, who escapes the 55 acre confines of her captor to discover the shocking reality that exists beyond the tree line… it’s 1973.

John Wick and Spotlight Ep Peter Lawson is producing the project with executive producers Jose Agustin Valdes and Luisa Fernanda Espinosa of Steel Springs Pictures, which is fully financing the project.

“So many films that depict this time in our history are rooted in victimization of the black female lead,” said Palmer, a co-host of Good Morning America‘s third hour Strahan, Sara and Keke. “This story is the opposite and that’s what attracted me to Krystin’s perspective. It...

Dummy Trailer Has Anna Kendrick Making an Unlikley New Friend on Quibi
Anna Kendrick and Meredith Hagner in Dummy (2020)
Quibi has released a new trailer for its upcoming comedy Dummy. This is just one of many, many high-profile shows that the upstart streaming service has coming down the pipeline. The gimmick, for those that aren't familiar, is that Quibi produces short-form content designed to be viewed on a mobile device. In this case, they've enlisted Pitch Perfect favorite Anna Kendrick to star in a comedy from creator Cody Heller of Deadbeat fame. Specifically, Kendrick is paling around with a life-sized sex doll.

The trailer opens up with Anna Kendrick making out with her older boyfriend. During which time, she discovers something strange on his bed. This leads to the reveal that he has a life-like sex doll. Things get especially strange when the doll begins talking to her through the use of some unsettling CGI. Oh, and the doll is a proud feminist. They then head out on an...

Keke Palmer on Hosting Quibi’s ‘Singled Out’ Reboot, Why the Streamer’s Strategy Is ‘Smart’ for the ‘Phoner’ Generation
Keke Palmer
Keke Palmer has already proven to be a master of modern communication, but with Quibi’s “Singled Out” reboot, the actor/singer/TV host and meme queen is speaking to a whole new generation.

“The first thing that shot out to me was that I’d get the opportunity to usher in something a little bit more for the ‘phoners,’ for the people that are watching television on their phone and trying to get into what’s happening through the phone,” Palmer told Variety on the “Variety After-Show,” explaining why she wanted to host the dating show. “I was like, ‘Okay, the Millennial Diva Keke has to get on board with it.’”

Though, at 26, Palmer’s a little young to remember MTV’s ’90s classic, she said she’s a big fan of the network (and the show’s former host Jenny McCarthy — “That’s my girl; I love her...

Love Is Blind (2020)
‘Singled Out’ Review: The Old Format Turns Out to Be a Good Match for Quibi
Love Is Blind (2020)
I thought I had moved on from the short and sweet dating shows in favor of season-long searches for love, like Netflix’s latest Love Is Blind, but much to my surprise, MTV’s Singled Out revamp for Quibi is a delight! Similar to the 90s show, this new version involves three rounds of elimination. Round one is called “dealbreakers.” The “dater” picks a category that can be about anything from sex life to where you prefer to sit on an airplane. If the players in the “singles” pool don’t have an answer that matches the dater’s, …...

Quibi Unveils New Trailer and Platform Details at CES: Here’s What We Know About the Mysterious Streamer
Meg Whitman in Charlie Rose (1991)
Quibi’s April 6 launch is inching closer, and the mobile short-form streaming service made an aggressive sales pitch Wednesday morning at CES in Las Vegas.

The upcoming platform, created by longtime Hollywood and Silicon Valley power players Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman, has raised plenty of eyebrows since its unveiling in 2018, and not just because the streaming service will only work on mobile devices. Episodes of each Quibi series will run under 10 minutes, and the platform, short for “quick bites,” has tapped a dizzying array of high-profile actors, content creators, and major companies to create or invest in the service. Katzenberg and Whitman told CES attendees during a keynote that the service will release roughly 175 series within its first year, which they say would equate to around three hours of new content every day. The service has already attracted $1.4 billion in investments, including from Disney and other studios

A revival of MTV’s ’90s dating show classic is coming to Quibi with multihyphenate Hustlers star Keke Palmer and comedian and Sunnyside standout Joel Kim Booster as hosts. The series is set to launch on the short-form mobile video platform in Spring 2020.

From ‘Star Trek’ to ‘SpongeBob,’ Here’s All the Content in Play For CBS-Viacom Merger
Hollywood’s landscape has changed dramatically since Viacom and CBS were last married in 2005. Now that the two media giants seek a Wall Street reunion, there are endless possibilities for the future of its shared content pie.

Huge action franchises like “Mission: Impossible” and “Transformers” from Paramount Pictures could explore new origin stories or exploit quirky side-characters for streaming series on the CBS over-the-top platform All Access. All Access is also currently building out the “Star Trek” TV universe, with three shows under the franchise’s umbrella set to be on the streaming service in 2020. Signs of synergy are already cropping up as well. CBS, which owns the TV licensing rights to “Star Trek,” gave its blessing for a cartoon take on the sci-fi classic at Nickelodeon this year.

Not only would a flurry of development that leverages the well-known intellectual property of Viacom and CBS pacify shareholders in both companies,...

If You Loved Watching Daria as an Angsty Teen, You Should Watch It as a Jaded Adult
Image Source: MTV / Everett Collection

Of all the TV shows to get a reboot or spinoff, Daria might be the one I'm most excited about. I was obsessed with the show growing up - I was just 12 when it premiered - and it reminds me of a time before Teen Mom and Teen Wolf, when you could watch shows like The Real World and Singled Out between a string of actual music videos. I could close my bedroom door, settle into my beanbag chair, and spend my evening chuckling at sarcastic, biting one-liners while I probably should have been doing my homework.

So, there was Daria. The show was a spinoff of MTV's other massive hit cartoon Beavis and Butt-Head, in which she appeared as a running character. It followed Daria Morgendorffer and her family's move to Lawndale, where the 16-year-old would begin her sophomore year in high school. In a 1999 New York Times article,...
