Jon Favreau’s Elf has become a staple of holiday viewing, and is now regarded as one of the greatest Christmas movies ever made. As well as bringing Will Ferrell to mainstream prominence and proving there were more strings to his bow than simply lending support in R-rated comedies, it also marked Favreau’s first mainstream box office hit, something he’s become more than accustomed to in the years since after going on to helm Iron Man, The Jungle Book and The Lion King.
Millions of people revisit the adventures of Buddy the elf on an annual basis, and fans have been holding out hope for a sequel for a long time now. Seventeen years have passed since the movie first hit theaters, though, and Favreau is currently one of the most in-demand filmmakers in the business and a firm favorite among the Disney hierarchy, while the leading man...

The studio picked up the pitch from writer Bobby Smith Jr (Jason’s Lyric), who will serve as writer and executive producer. Longtime Disney production executive and producer Brigham Taylor will produce via his Taylor Made Film Productions banner.
Founded in 2009, the Icyola is the largest majority African-American orchestra in America and has helped transform the lives of hundreds of young Angelenos who go on to perform in settings including the Getty Center, Walt Disney Concert Hall and Staples Center, as well as throughout South Los Angeles’ church community.

So, going into the final stretch before the Oscars are announced, I have a question: if you like—no, love this year’s front-running La La Land, does that make you a bad person, or just deluded? Don’t laugh—there may be people at your own Oscar party who will have already come to their own conclusion on that conundrum. This year’s presumptive favorite is so presumptive that people are talking about the film as if it had already won and are projecting as to whether it’s an enduring classic or just another meh-fest to be thrown on the mediocrity pile along with Crash, Chicago, Argo, The Artist and about half of the rest of Oscar’s Best Picture winners since the Academy started handing out awards at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in 1929. It is hard to deny, no matter how much you like or dislike La La Land,...

In 2017, there are tons of memorable films that are hitting milestone ages. While it makes us feel a little old, it also gives us a reason to look back on some of our favourite films and have epic movie marathons (oftentimes, ones where we know all of the lines).
We did some research and compiled a master list of all of the notable films that are celebrating big anniversaries this year. Among the crop are films like Titanic, Blade Runner, The Graduate, and more.
Check out the best movie anniversaries of 2017 below and start planning your movie-themed parties accordingly!

Here at Et, we love an anniversary -- whether it’s the 20th anniversary of Scream or Clueless, 10 years in the life of The Hills or the magical time making No Doubt’s Magic Kingdom 20 years later. And as we settle in 2017, it’s time to look ahead at all those upcoming moments that will have you saying, “I remember when…”
Here’s a brief look at our favorite TV and film milestones of 2017:
Jan. 25, 2002: A Walk to Remember (15 Years)
While fans are crying over Mandy Moore’s Golden Globe-nominated performance on NBC’s hit new series This Is Us, it was just 15 years ago that they cried over her performance in the weepy adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ book about a girl with cancer who falls in love with a rebellious classmate.

The Bechdel-Wallace Test was developed in 1985 by Alison Bechdel and Liz Wallace to see if a work of fiction featured at least two women talking about something other than a man. Looking at the 25 top-grossing films of 2016, The Hollywood Reporter decided to conduct the test to see if those movies passed.
The test has three requirements: 1. Does it have more than two female characters (with names) in it? 2. Do those characters engage in a conversation with each other? 3. And is that conversation about anything other than a man?
The results were put into four categories, Pass, Incomplete, Fail and Seriously, which meant that the film didn’t achieve any of the three requirements. According to THR only half of the movies passed, with “Ghostbusters” having 36 scenes involving two or more women talking about something other than a man and “The Conjuring 2” having 27 scenes.
Other films that checked all the requirements were “Bad Moms,...

John Landis’ 1978 classic college comedy follows the rowdy Delta Tau Chi fraternity’s battle to remain on campus after they provoked the ire of the conniving Dean of the college. Features John Belushi in his most anarchic performance, toga parties, and sing-a-longs to “Louie Louie” and “Shout!”
2. “Waking Life” (available December 1)
Richard Linklater’s 2001 film “Waking Life” examines a bevy of philosophical issues — the nature of dreams, the limitations of consciousness and the meaning of life — in a surreal, rotoscoped dreamscape that demands the viewer’s mind to take flight.

Disney’s been on a bit of a streak with their animated-to-live-action films. Maleficent made bank at the box office, Cinderella killed it, and The Jungle Book pretty much elevated it to a whole new level. With next year’s Beauty and the Beast on the horizon, it seems like the House of Mouse can do no wrong (and don’t even get started on their Marvel, Pixar, and Disney Animation projects, which are all also Killing it).
Well, it looks like they’ve decided to add another film to their docket. Despite the fact that it’s only been about four years since the release of the ill-fated Mirror Mirror — an adaptation of the Snow White tale — Disney is now developing yet another version of this classic story. That’s right, they’re making another one.

“Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover” is a proverb whose simple existence proves the fact impressionable souls will do so without fail. This monthly column focuses on the film industry’s willingness to capitalize on this truth, releasing one-sheets to serve as not representations of what audiences are to expect, but as propaganda to fill seats. Oftentimes they fail miserably.

Ahead of the release of Captain America Civil War, Empire have debuted their upcoming April issue cover, featuring Captain America and Iron Man locked in battle. The new issue, which hits shelves on Thursday 25th February, and has a special subscriber cover that hasn’t yet been revealed.
Though the first trailer seemingly suggested that Cap and Bucky had the best of Tony Stark in battle, this new cover tells a closer story of an irresistible force meeting an immovable object. And that equality is key to selling the idea that choosing sides is going to be difficult.

The issue will look ahead to the film’s release with a feature dedicated to the Russo Brothers, an interview feature with Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans, and an interview with Black Panther actor Chadwick Boseman. On top of that there’s also an itnerview with Jon Bernthal about...

From The Craft and The Birds to The Fugitive and She's All That, the many film reboots and remakes currently in the works...
Over the years that Den Of Geek has been going, we've regularly been charting the assortment of reboots and remakes that are making their way through the Hollywood system. This, then, is the current state of play. There's a touching scene near the end of Alien vs Predator when an eight-foot, fang-faced predator, using the acidic blood from the severed finger of an alien face-hugger, tenderly scorches a mark of courage and respect onto the cheek of the last human survivor. She grimaces as her skin burns, and then their eyes meet across the great expanse of space and time that separates both cultures, and then they kiss or they would have if the queen alien hadn't eviscerated the woman's new friend with the pointy end of her tail. Andy Serkis is in negotiations with Warner Bros to direct a live-action adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book.

Over 20 years ago, Headey's film career was jump-started by a chance encounter at the Royal National Theatre in high school. Today, the actress plays character-you-love-to-hate Cersei Lannister in the hit HBO series "Game of Thrones," but, this Friday, the actress will return to theaters as the popular warrior queen for another go-round in "300: Rise of an Empire."
From hilarious fan encounters to her love of horror films, here are 15 things you probably don't know about Lena Headey.
1. Headey was born in Bermuda, where her father -- a Yorkshire police cadet -- was stationed. She grew up on the island country before her family moved back to Huddersfield, Yorkshire, when she was five.
2. Peter Dinklage and Headey were friends before "Game of Thrones," prompting the actor to...

Former Cannon Films exec and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves co-producer dies aged 87.
Former Cannon Films executive Michael J Kagan has died in London aged 87.
Kagan was head of production at well-known indie Cannon between 1982-88, during which time he was associate producer on two films directed by UK director Michael Winner: the 1983 remake of The Wicked Lady, starring Faye Dunaway, Alan Bates and John Gielgud, and Death Wish 3 in 1985.
He was also executive producer on Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987).
At its height in the 1980s, Cannon, then owned by renowned producers Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, was producing dozens of films per year, many of them B-movie classics.
Later in his career Kagan was line producer on Roger Spottiswoode’s action-comedy Air America and co-producer on box office hit Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves as well as Stephen Sommers’ The Jungle Book.
Kagan is survived by his wife Kate.

Over the summer, it was announced that Disney would be opening their vault and re-introducing the world to one of its most beloved classics, The Jungle Book, in the form of a trendy live-action adaptation. I like to imagine that the Disney vault is an actual place in Anaheim guarded by Walt’s cryogenically frozen body, but that’s a theory I should save for my B-movie. Now, The Hollywood Reporter is back with more news about the project, namely that Jon Favreau is in talks with the studio to direct. Favreau is no stranger to directing for the Disney family. After all, he’s the man behind the Iron Man franchise and Elf. After leaving the nest to make an indie called Chef, Favreau has heard the sweet call of the House of Mouse once more, to helm the remake written by Justin Marks. Here’s the thing, though: we all know that The Jungle Book got...

Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book has a pretty great history on the big screen thanks to both the animated film from 1967 and the live action adaptation from director Stephen Sommers in 1994, but now the story is getting ready get another feature adaptation, this time potentially from the director of Iron Man. According to Deadline, Disney is now in talks with Jon Favreau to helm a whole new adaptation of the classic novel. First published in 1894, the most popular tale in the book follows a young jungle boy named Mowgli who was raised by wolves after his father was attached and killed by a tiger. The book recounts many stories about Mowgli's life in the jungle as well as other short plots - including "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi," the story of a mongoose who must protect his human family from venomous cobras. The new take on the story is reportedly a priority at the...

The Jungle Book: Disney is turning once again to a literary property in the public domain for inspiration. Justin Marks has been hired to write a new screen adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book, though it's not known if the reboot will nod more to Disney's 1967 animated, family-friendly musical version or Disney's 1994 live-action action-romance version; the latter starred Jason Scott Lee as Mowgli, a "man cub" raised by wolves in the Indian jungle. Warner Bros. is already developing its own version of Kipling's fables. Disney is planning to raid its vault of classics, with Heat Vision reporting that the studio is set to release a live-action remake of The Jungle Book. According to the source, Disney is currently looking for a director to head up the project, its second attempt at a live-action adaptation after Stephen Sommers' effort failed to have anywhere near the impact that the animated version had. However, Disney will have to move fast if they're to be the first new Jungle Book adaptation in the marketplace, with Warner Bros currently...

Next to Tremors, I personally believe Deep Rising is one of the best monster movies to come out of the '90s.
Released in January (considered prime dumping grounds for films a studio didn't know what to do with) of 1998, the film stars Treat Williams, Famke Janssen and the creature design work of Rob Bottin.
Oh, and it was an early Stephen Sommers film - y'know, the guy who gave us The Mummy reboot and Van Helsing.
After directing films like 1993's The Adventures of Huck Finn and '94's The Jungle Book, Sommers needed to exercise his love for monster flicks and so he penned Deep Rising. It's clever, it's gruesome and it's prime "Treat Williams." All in all, great stuff.
And it's coming to Blu-ray courtesy of Mill Creek Entertainment on October 9th. Sadly, no bonus features are coming with this presentation, but it is being packaged with the serviceable The Puppet Masters.

To have one giant money-losing tentpole is unfortunate. To have two starts to look careless, and that's what's happened to Taylor Kitsch. The actor, who broke out on TV's "Friday Night Lights," was seen as Hollywood's next great hope, picked out to star in two great big blockbusters with a combined cost of half-a-billion dollars. But when "John Carter" arrived in March, the film wildly underperformed, with Disney taking a hit of at least $100 million on the project. And after this weekend, it looks that his other film, "Battleship," is going to lose similar amounts.
The film, Universal & Hasbro's adaptation of the board game, directed by "Hancock" helmer Peter Berg, had taken the unusual step of opening everywhere else in the world six weeks ahead of the U.S, in the hope of bagging lucrative foreign coin and building buzz for the U.S. release. The reason it took so long for me to write something down on my wish list is not lack of wanting something, but it is because I want everything. However, since we are not writing a novel, I did manage to narrow it down to two things:
I love Anthony Hopkins! He is one of my favorite, if not the favorite, older Hollywood actors. The man is undoubtedly a living legend in the film world. What Hopkins fan would not want an autographed photo from Silence of the Lambs? As a bonus, this...

There have been a few adaptations of Dean Koontz novels here and there, and now Stephen Sommers is going to add one more to the pile. Instead of going right into the sequel to G.I. Joe, the director will adapt the book Odd Thomas, and he's cast Anton Yelchin. Styd [1] has the news, but doesn't offer too much more about the film. Looks like Stephen Sommers wrote the script himself, and is producing it as well. The book is the first of a series of novels featuring the same character, "an ordinary man with an extraordinary gift. Able to communicate with the dead, Odd must use their silent clues in an attempt to prevent a mass catastrophe which threatens everything he holds dear." Here's a more expansive take on the novel, which I've seen referenced as once of the author's better books. Anton Yelchin seems like a solid choice for the title role.

With Sir Ridley and that grumpy Kiwi bringing us a brand new vision of Robin Hood this week, we thought it might be a good idea to travel back in time and take a look at past versions of the legendary outlaw.
The story of Robin Hood has been somewhat of a favourite in Hollywood. The heroic outlaw is the perfect example of classic English folklore, which seems to translate very well to the world of film. There have been literally hundreds of films and TV serials depicting the prince of thieves with lots of actors stepping into the role. It would be impossible to go through them all so instead let’s just focus on the more famous ones.

To everyone who participated in the first meeting of the Pajiba Book Club: Thank you! It was a great discussion of Lolita with a lot of different perspectives and exceeded all of our expectations. To everyone who liked the idea but decided to wait until next time: it's next time. The Pajiba Book Club will be reading The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman with the official review & discussion to be posted on March 30th (that's next Tuesday).
The story is loosely based on Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book with the orphaned boy being raised by ghosts and ghouls in a graveyard instead of wild animals in the jungle. And while a superficial consideration of The Graveyard Book might be inclined to think it is just a children's fantasy book careful readers will notice a lot more going on here. "Are you soulless right now?" Emily Watson asks Paul Giamatti in horror at one point in the marvelous Cold Souls. Were the question directed at G.I Joe: The Rise of Cobra, the answer would be a deafening yes. This is the movie as pure product without soul or inspiration. It was blueprinted rather than created, assembled by drones to be shown to drones, who will walk out of it and, when asked to describe it, drone on. This product comes from the dreaded Stephen Sommers, who has made a career of despoiling classic texts of all kinds. From Huckleberry Finn to The Jungle Book to The Mummy, Sommers specializes in taking much-loved works, stripping them of nuance and giving them the cinematic equivalent of Red Bull -- an injection of artificial energy that leads to an inevitable crash once the sugar/caffeine rush...

Well that didn't take too long! ComingSoon has debuted the full 30-second TV spot for G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra - which gives us our first-ever glimpse at finished footage from the upcoming G.I. Sure, it may be incredibly over-the-top, even pushing heavily into the cheesy range of things, but that's part of why this look so damn good. That's what G.I. American filmmaker Stephen Sommers is on the run for the director role of "Tarzan". Having done film project like "The Adventures of Huck Finn" and "The Jungle Book" in the past, he is said to be in talks with Warner Bros. Pictures to take the place of Guillermo del Toro, who was previously attached to the project.
Sommers' name came out in the director's list after del Toro, the "Pan's Labyrinth" director, made a four-year commitment for "The Hobbit". Though the negotiation for the director seat is still under way, Sommers has been tapped to develop the script along with "Collateral" scribe Stu Beattie.
For the new project, he and Beatie have been said to be taking a new approach in adapting the classic 1914 Edgar Rice Burroughs' "Tarzan, Lord of the Apes" hinting that it would be different from the Burroughs' version as well as previous films. Still, much...

He's already tackled Huckleberry Finn and Mowgli, so let's see what Stephen Sommers can do with Tarzan.
The "Jungle Book" director is in negotiations with Warner Bros. to bring a new version of the classic Edgar Rice Burroughs creation "Tarzan, Lord of the Apes," to the big screen. "Collateral" screenwriter Stu Beattie will write the project with Sommers.

Once upon a time, I thought director Stephen Sommers was going to be a pretty nifty director. He made a live action version of The Jungle Book in 1994 that was pretty darn good. Tense, exciting, beautifully shot and breathlessly paced, this was deliciously fun B-movie excitement perfect for the entire family and I don't feel remotely ashamed to admit just how much I enjoyed it. Then came the three-pronged attack of Deep Rising, The Mummy and The Mummy Returns. Each increasingly more juvenile. Each more reliant upon tepid CGI effects not even remotely ready for prime time. Worse, Sommers seemed intent on stripping intelligence completely out of his motion pictures, his characters nothing more than thin cardboard cutouts devoid of virtually any and all interesting qualities that could have remotely made any of them anything close to human. Of course, Deep Rising has turned into something of an underground cult hit,...
