WWE wrestler Chris Jericho has a "blink & you miss it" cameo after he was invited to spend a day on the movie set by a mutual friend of Roddy Pipers, Art Barr, when wrestling in Mexico
The film's title rips-off the video game Mortal Kombat (1992). However, the irony extends further due to the fact that Deron McBee would go on to play in Mortal Kombat Annihilation (1997) as Motaro.
Roddy Piper and Meg Foster previously co-starred in They Live.
The logo for the movie features a broadsword in the title. The only swords used in the film are katana, a broadsword is never shown.
Roddy Piper and Tiny Lister both wrestled Hulk Hogan in multiple classic WWF and WCW Pay-per-view events from 1984 to 2003. Piper and Hogan battled 3 times in the WWF on PPV during The Wrestling Classic in 1984, the first Wrestlemania in 1985, and No Way Out 2003. Between 1985 and 2003, they grappled in WCW in three 1-on-1 bouts, and a few tag team matches from 1996 to 1998. Zeus, as Lister was first known, battled Hogan in a special event to promote the release of the movie No Holds Barred with a match of the same name, and later that year at both Summerslam and Survivor Series in 1989. Lister, later rebranded as Z-Gangster for WCW, once again battled Hogan at Uncensored 96.
