After getting caught, the gang is given a chance to be good. Turns out, they enjoy it—especially when they get to save the city from an evil villain! Looks like being the hero suits them just fine.

Jack Lilley, ‘Little House on the Prairie’ Stuntman and Actor, Dies at 91
Image
Jack Lilley, the stunt performer and actor who made a home for himself on Little House on the Prairie by working on every one of the beloved NBC drama’s nine seasons, has died. He was 91.

Lilley had Alzheimer’s disease and died Wednesday at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills, his granddaughter Savanah Lilley told The Signal, a news outlet in Santa Clarita.

In Blazing Saddles (1974), Lilley played one of the outlaws who loots the town of Rock Ridge, and in one scene, he and his horse slide into a pool of mud and are submerged. It was an accident, but director Mel Brooks liked it so much, he kept it in the movie.

The mustachioed Lilley had worked with Michael Landon on Bonanza for years starting in 1961, and that led to Landon hiring him for Little House in 1974. (Landon, of course, starred in,...

Drew Barrymore Credits ‘Bad Girls’ With Changing Her Life: “I Can Trace It Back To That Experience”
Image
Drew Barrymore credits 1994’s Western action flick Bad Girls with changing her life at 16 years old.

In a recent episode on The Drew Barrymore Show, the host reunited with co-star Andie MacDowell and the two reminisced about the film (which also featured Madeleine Stowe and Mary Stuart Masterson) about four brothel workers on the lam after a justifiable homicide and who set out in search for a better life in the Wild West.

“When we did Bad Girls, I was 16. I was such a dumbass,” Barrymore said, to which MacDowell responded, “Oh my God, you were so beautiful and so good.”

The Charlie’s Angels star continued, “I always talk about how much it changed my life. If I hadn’t done that film, there’s no way I’d be sitting here right now because it was that film that showed me if you care about something, be involved.

10 Below Deck Alums Who Should Have Received The Villain Edit But Didn't (Their Red Flags Were Hidden)
Image
Below Deck has had some of the most interesting cast members throughout their spin-offs, and while some members deserved villain status, many hid their true colors so well that it was impossible to see their pretentious traits. On the Bravo network, the battle between good and evil has always been epic, with villains being showcased in every Below Deck franchise. Therefore, moments of drama between the crew are always anticipated. The show has had some of the worst villains, from Kyle Viljoen, featured on Below Deck Mediterranean seasons 7 and 8, to the problematic Gary King.

Gary is still the most controversial participant Below Deck has ever seen. When he was first introduced to the Below Deck universe, it was clear that he was quite a ladies' man. Over time, Gary has failed to respect boundaries when interacting with fellow female crew members. In Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4, she flirted with...

Lynda Obst, who had producing credits on high-profile films including “Sleepless in Seattle,” “Flashdance” and “Adventures in Babysitting,” died Tuesday in Los Angeles. She was 74.

“I was immensely proud of her. She was a trailblazer for women in the industry at a time when it was very difficult for women to have prominent roles. She was passionate about her work but even more passionate about her family,” her brother, WME’s Rick Rosen, said to Variety.

Obst told the Hollywood Reporter earlier this year that she had been battling chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Most recently, she served as producer or executive producer on TV series including “The Hot Zone,” “Good Girls Revolt,” “Hot in Cleveland” and “Helix.” Obst’s final feature producing credit was Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar” in 2014. With ‘Axel F,’ Harold Faltermeyer Gave ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ Its Signature Sound
Image
What kind of music goes best with comedy? Even if you’ve never seen The Benny Hill Show, you know its silly, sped-up theme song. For years, funny movies would incorporate swinging jazz or playful orchestral tunes. Then, in the late 1970s, John Landis had the idea to tap acclaimed Oscar-winning composer (and friend) Elmer Bernstein to write a no-winking serious score for Landis’ outrageous Animal House. The juxtaposition worked perfectly, the onscreen hijinks accentuated by Bernstein’s soaring strings — almost as if the movie was pretending to be classy while the characters were thumbing their nose at the pomposity. Soon, other movies, like Airplane! (also scored by Bernstein), were doing the same thing, proving that what initially seemed like a bizarre notion for music in a comedy could actually be brilliant.

But times change, and one trend gets replaced by a new one. By the mid-1980s, several hit comedies contained a hit single.

Al Ruddy, Oscar-Winning Producer of ‘The Godfather’ and ‘Million Dollar Baby,’ Dies at 94
Image
Al Ruddy, who co-created the famed CBS sitcom Hogan’s Heroes, then captured Academy Awards for producing the best picture winners The Godfather and Million Dollar Baby, has died. He was 94.

Ruddy, also credited as one of the creators of the long-running CBS police drama Walker, Texas Ranger, died Saturday following a brief illness at UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center, a publicist announced.

On the heels of The Godfather (1972), Ruddy produced another box-office hit with the original The Longest Yard (1974), the prison-set football movie that starred Burt Reynolds. The pair then reteamed for the action road films The Cannonball Run (1981) and its 1984 sequel, both directed by stuntman-turned-helmer Hal Needham.

The personable Ruddy also produced such films as Bad Girls (1994), the first Western with all female leads (Madeleine Stowe, Mary Stuart Masterson, Andie MacDowell and Drew Barrymore); the baseball comedy The Scout (1994), starring Albert Brooks and Brendan Fraser; and Matilda (1978), a comedy...

15 Best TV Shows About Prison
Image
The best prison shows explore dark stories of criminals in captivity, but also touch on themes of redemption, friendship, and humor. Series like "Buried" offer unflinching portrayals of prison dynamics and survival, while "Inside the World's Toughest Prisons" provides global perspectives. Shows like "Girls Incarcerated" and "Black Bird" offer raw portrayals of the challenges faced by female inmates and the psychological depth of prison life.

Though it might seem like a restrictive setting, the best prison shows showcase the different ways stories can be told about life behind bars. Unsurprisingly, many prison-centric shows are dramas and not for audiences seeking lighter fare. They cater to the dark stories of criminals who are just as dangerous in captivity and the loss of hope and humanity some of these inmates feel. However, prison shows can also deal with redemption, friendship, and even finding humor in such a life.

Some of the best...

Unlawful Entry: The Best Kurt Russell Movie You Never Saw?
Image
The 1990s are regularly regarded as the era of the high-concept thriller. In the wake of eighties smashes like Jagged Edge and Fatal Attraction, audiences tended to flock to these kinds of movies, although it’s worth noting they quickly spun off into two different mini-genres. There was the erotic thriller genre, whose queen was definitely Sharon Stone, with movies like Basic Instinct and Sliver, but there was also the so-called yuppie thriller.

These movies often centred around upwardly mobile middle-class couples who wind up in the crosshairs of a maniac who wants to dismantle their lives. Fatal Attraction was arguably the first of these. Still, many more would follow, including Pacific Heights, which featured Michael Keaton in a memorably evil role, Bad Influence (with Rob Lowe), Internal Affairs (which revitalized Richard Gere’s career), Malice, and the great Single White Female. But, of the genre, one of the most effective was 1992’s Unlawful Entry,...

10 Western Movies So Bad They're Actually Good
Image
Some Westerns are objectively not the best movies, but so charming that they become genuinely entertaining watches. For example, Cowboys & Aliens blends science fiction and Western action, but lacks critical acclaim and a sequel. Bad Girls provides a unique perspective with an all-female Western cast, despite predictable plot points.

Although there are plenty of movies in the Western genre that aren't as great as others, they've still gone on to develop a strong following because of how charming and accessible they are to audiences. While some Westerns boast impressive visuals, there are others that are notable for the lackluster performances of their cast, weak direction, and writing that relies far too heavily on tired Western tropes. Nevertheless, some Westerns have developed a respectable reputation among audiences precisely for their negative traits.

From Westerns with great plot twists to Westerns notable for blending multiple genres, audiences have experienced a vast...

‘Out of Darkness’ Review
Image
Stars: Chuku Modu, Luna Mwezi, Iola Evans, Kit Young, Arno Lüning, Safia Oakley-Green | Written by Ruth Greenberg | Directed by Andrew Cumming

I can almost imagine Out of Darkness’ director Andrew Cumming pitching the film to potential backers as Quest for Fire meets Predator. And that would be a fairly accurate description of this Stone Age thriller about a tribe of early humans being picked off by an unseen foe. And one that makes it sound a lot less cerebral and more commercial than it might otherwise appear.

45,000 years ago, six early humans have left their tribe to find a new home. Leading the group is Adem, who also has his young son Heron and Ave who’s carrying Adem’s child along with him. Also making the trek are Geirr, Adem’s more cautious second-in-command and Odal’s who seems to be some kind of shaman and last, and certainly least,...

Drew Barrymore And Dermot Mulroney Tear Up In ‘Bad Girls’ TV Reunion
Image
In 1994, the film Bad Girls debuted. Drew Barrymore, Mary Stuart Masterson, Andie MacDowell, and Madeleine Stowe starred as four prostitutes out for vengeance in the Wild West.

But a cast reunion on Barrymore’s show brought out the tears, as Barrymore reunited Masterson and MacDowell with Dermot Mulroney, who played their ally Josh McCoy.

“You were so good to me, I really was like a lost seventeen-year-old,” Barrymore told Mulroney. “I was having so much fun, but I didn’t know how to take care of myself and you took such good care of me. You were so kind to me.”

Barrymore continued to thank Mulroney for protecting her and watching out for her.

“I’m so happy to see you,” Mulroney says. “Sorry guys, I cry now. I knew I was gonna and I came anyway. I decided I’m gonna go ahead and cry in public.”

Drew Barrymore and Dermot Mulroney Have Tear-Filled ‘Bad Girls’ Reunion
Image
Drew Barrymore and Dermot Mulroney had a tear-filled reunion when the actor surprised the talk show host on Thursday’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show.

The Anyone But You star was one of three people who made an appearance and caught Barrymore off-guard, as the episode was only intended to be a sit-down with Andie MacDowell. The two co-starred in Bad Girls.

In honor of the 1994 film celebrating 30 years, MacDowell surprised Barrymore with Mulroney, their fellow co-star Mary Stuart Masterson and executive producer Lynda Obst, who made an appearance via video.

“I am freaking out right now,” Barrymore said, sitting alongside Mulroney, as they both got visibly emotional. “You were so good to me. I really was like a lost 17 year old. I know I was having so much fun, but I didn’t know how to take care of myself, and you took such good care of me.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for House of Villains Finale] Some of the most recognizable and devious personalities in the reality TV game put their skills to the test on House of Villains. After weeks of physical, borderline ridiculous, somewhat terrifying, and mentally draining challenges, it came down to five during the E! competition show’s finale. Still left were Johnny Bananas (The Challenge), Jonny Fairplay (Survivor), Tanisha Thomas (Bad Girls Club), Abhishek “Shake” Chatterjee (Love is Blind), and Anfisa Arkhipchenko (90 Day Fiancé). Host Joel McHale revealed their last Battle Royale challenge would be “Last Supper.” The eating competition saw the group downing hard-boiled eggs, nuclear spicy wings, red snapper eyeballs, bull testicles, and pig brains served up by Below Deck’s Ben Robinson. Bananas had the stomach to finish his meal first, earning him a guaranteed seat in the finals. The Challenge legend chose his ride-or-die Tanisha to join him. This left Shake, Fairplay, and Anfisa battling it...

The 10 Biggest Harems in Anime
Image
Harem anime are defined by their vast roster of potential romantic partners, and an often male lead who becomes the focal point of multiple women's interest. When Urusei Yatsura all but introduced the subgenre through characters such as Lum and Ataru Moroboshi, it kick-started a niche that has continued to grow over the years in terms of popularity and, occasionally, the number of romantic prospects.

This year, everything from new slice-of-life anime to isekai power fantasies featured a harem dynamic at some point, but each show approached it differently. The one thing they all had in common was their ridiculously massive size. These modern anime joined the already long list of older anime with the biggest and funniest harems fans have ever seen.

Pop Girl Tate McRae Has No Tears Left To Cry On ‘Think Later’
Image
When Tate McRae broke through in 2020 with the brooding bedroom pop of her debut single “You Broke Me First,” the then-17 year-old Canadian singer stormed TikTok with such an innate understanding of how other teenagers were consuming music that RCA Records didn’t just sign her, they restructured their marketing strategy around her. But the formula behind that initial success— a combination of original dances, trend participation, and teaser snippets — hasn’t always worked for her. “She’s All I Wanna Be,” the should-have-been-hit from her 2022 debut album I Used...

How Buffy The Vampire Slayer's Writers Used Faith To Explore Buffy's 'Bloodlust'
Image
Don't let the title fool you: "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" isn't the only one of her kind. The "Slayer" line goes back millennia, and when one falls, another young girl is called on by destiny. In the season 1 finale, "Prophecy Girl," Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) briefly dies but is revived. The writers took advantage of that technicality in season 2 to introduce another slayer, Kendra (Bianca Lawson) — but she met a swift end.

Enter Faith Lehane (no relation to Dennis) in season 3, played by Eliza Dushku and sharing her actress' Boston origins. Her name is a virtue, but Faith is a rebel — so much so, she bounces from ally to enemy and then back again. In an interview with "Buffy" writers and producers, they discussed how, from the beginning, Faith was meant to be a "psycho" Slayer who would be a foil for Buffy. Marti Noxon called her Buffy's "shadow self,...

Venice Review: Athena is Romain Gavras’ Brutal, Breathless Magnum Opus
Drew Barrymore, Andie MacDowell, Mary Stuart Masterson, and Madeleine Stowe in Bad Girls (1994)
Is reinvention overrated? For at least 45 minutes, Athena (named for the fictional area where the film is based as well as the goddess of wisdom and war) threatens to be Romain Gavras’ magnum opus, but the building blocks haven’t changed. Look at his earliest music video, released in 2002: high rises, young men, tracksuits, BMX tricks. Then look at his work on Justice’s Stress, released seven years after: high rises, young men, tracksuits, only this time with Molotov cocktails and a strain of nihilistic chaos. Even as his most acclaimed work took him to bigger budgets and distant places, Gavras has never strayed far from his core ideas; his career has been an ode to finessing and amping up.

Just wait for the opening sequence, where Gavras, in a single take, moves a tornado of action all the way from a police station to an apartment block that...

Venice: Romain Gavras on Creating the “Greek Tragedy” of His “Immersive” Epic ‘Athena’
Image
Click here to read the full article.

French filmmaker Romain Gavras is best known to the screen-watching world thanks to his arresting and visually ambitious music videos, which have included Jamie xx’s “Gosh,” Kanye West’s “No Church in the Wild” and M.I.A.’s “Bad Girls,” among various others. But that could change when his third feature film, Athena, releases on Netflix on Sept. 23 after its world premiere this week in Venice.

The film arrives as if the perfect vehicle for Gavras background and ambitions. The youngest son of Oscar-winning Greek director, Costa-Gavras, and French political journalist and film producer, Michèle Ray-Gavras, Romain Gavras grew up steeped in the Greek classics and politically informed art and activism. In 1995, he co-founded the film collective Kourtrajmé with his childhood friends Kim Chapiron and Ladj Ly (director of the Oscar-nominated Les Misérables), and his second feature, The World Is Yours, debuted to...

‘Athena’ Trailer: Romain Gavras Helms Cop Revenge Drama as a Greek Tragedy
Image
Justice will be served as anarchy erupts following a murder at the hands of a rogue police officer.

Romain Gavras’ “Athena” tells an all-too-timely tale of cop corruption, militant protests, and the intersection between nationalism and personal duty. The film premieres at the 2022 Venice Film Festival on September 2, followed by a September 23 Netflix release.

Per the official synopsis, after the death of his youngest brother following an alleged police altercation, Abdel (Dali Benssalah) is called back from the frontline to find his family torn apart. Caught between his younger brother Karim’s (Sami Slimane) desire for revenge and the criminal dealings of his older brother Moktar (Ouassini Embarek), he struggles to calm the rising tensions. As the situation escalates, their community Athena is transformed into a fortress under siege, becoming a scene of tragedy for both the family and beyond.

Gavras directed, produced, and co-wrote the feature along with Ladj Ly...

“Bad Girls Club” star Whitney Collings died Thursday morning at a hospital near her hometown of Boston, according to TMZ, which was the first to share the news. She was 33.

Collings’ death was announced by her mother Linda Houghton Collings, who wrote on Facebook, “I am completely broken and will never get over this. Life is so unfair. She was kind with a big heart.” Her cause of death is currently unknown.

The late reality TV star appeared on Season 3 of the Oxygen series in 2008, when she was 21. At the time, she was a biology and physics student at Salem State University in Massachusetts, according to the Boston Herald.

Westworld - Dove tutto è concesso (2016)
HBO Now New Releases: May 2020
Westworld - Dove tutto è concesso (2016)
May isn’t quite summer yet but it is usually time that the networks start wrapping up their newest shows and preparing for a relatively fallow summer period. Since HBO isn’t a network, it has no such business model. But May sees the winding down of some HBO blockbusters all the same.

While there are some notable new releases for HBO in May 2020, the bigger story might be the things that are ending. Westworld concludes its third season on May 3 while new series Run wraps up on May 24. Thankfully the film losses in May aren’t too bad for HBO, unless the Agent Cody Banks saga drives a lot of traffic.

The most notable TV premiere in May is I Know This Much is True, a book adaptation starring Mark Ruffalo. This is a very bleak story coming along at a bleak time in history but perhaps those two things will cancel out.

Róisín Murphy’s New Single Is a Glorious Disco Throwback
Don Cheadle, Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Mickey Rourke, and Scarlett Johansson in Iron Man 2 (2010)
Róisín Murphy has contributed a few songs to the dance-club canon over the course of her 25-year career as a soloist and a member of Moloko. But recently, this material has become her primary focus. She released a series of collaborations with the gifted house producer Maurice Fulton in 2018, thumping, rubbery numbers that hinted at Esg and Jocelyn Brown. Last year, she put out “Incapable,” a smoldering, cold-hearted floor-filler.

“Incapable” was produced by Richard Barratt, and he reprises that role on “Murphy’s Law,” where the interplay between the keyboard, bass,...

J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot Take on Supernatural Western The Pinkerton for Warner Bros.
J.J. Abrams at an event for Into Darkness - Star Trek (2013)
J.J. Abrams is moving on from a galaxy far, far away with his first new project at Warner Bros. The prolific filmmaker has signed on to produce The Pinkerton via his Bad Robot production company. The movie comes from writer Daniel Casey, who is behind the upcoming Fast & Furious 9, officially titled F9. While details are largely being kept under wraps, what is being revealed makes this sound like something that fits well within Abrams' wheelhouse.

According to a new report, Warner Bros. purchased the script for The Pinkerton to be developed by Bad Robot. Plot details remain mostly mysterious, but it's described as a supernatural revenge thriller in a western setting. Pinkerton, aside from being a beloved album by the band Weezer, was a famous detective agency that was founded in 1850. Abraham Lincoln employed Pinkertons for his personal protection during the Civil War. They were figures often associated...

The Grammys and Black Music: A Timeline of Snubs and Embarrassments (Photos)
The 2018 Grammy nominations were a triumph for diversity, with far more hip-hop and R&b nominees in the top categories than ever before.

In a way, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that an organization devoted to supporting and honoring music would recognize the current ascendance of hip-hop as the dominant popular music form. But it is something of a delicious shock, because since they began in the 1950s, the Grammys have not exactly been inclusive.

No hip-hop song, for instance, has ever won Record of the Year or Song of the Year. You could argue that they’ve been shortsighted when it comes to rock music and Latin music and jazz and other genres, too, that there’s an inevitable conservatism that comes from having a huge body of voters considering such a vast musical landscape.

But the decades worth of snubs and oversights are not pretty. A timeline:

1959

At the first Grammys,...

‘Charlie’s Angels’ Film Review: Kristen Stewart and Company Make Reboot All About Sisterhood
Kristen Stewart
“I think women can do anything,” an undercover Kristen Stewart purrs in the very first line of “Charlie’s Angels,” thereby setting the tone — and the priority — for Elizabeth Banks’ rousing remake of this long-running franchise.

Gone are the Angels dancing in their underwear, as McG directed Cameron Diaz in the first film. No more ladies doting on an aging Bosley, as they did in every episode of the TV show. Angels 3.0 are doing it for themselves.

Well, not themselves exactly, since Bosley is still their boss. But in Banks’ world, the name is really more of a rank, “like lieutenant,” her character explains. There are many Bosleys now, including ones played by Banks and (an underused) Djimon Hounsou, as well as the Og embodied by Patrick Stewart.

Why are the ‘Dancing with the Stars’ judges so harsh on Hannah Brown?
Eric Roberts, Tori Spelling, Reginald VelJohnson, Alfonso Ribeiro, Anna Delvey Sorokin, Joey Graziadei, Ilona Maher, Jenn Tran, Stephen Nedoroscik, Dwight Howard, Julianne Hough, Phaedra Parks, Chandler Kinney, Danny Amendola, and Brooks Nader in Dancing with the Stars (2005)
Looks like the “Dancing with the Stars” judges have moved on from hosing James Van Der Beek to hosing Hannah Brown. For a couple of weeks, Van Der Beek was getting underscored for his stellar routines, but he’s sort of back on track, so to speak, while Brown is now in the judges’ line of fire, taking another hit on Monday’s Halloween Night.

Though the judges underscored Van Der Beek, they were never overly mean in their assessments, merely giving him tips and pointing out things he needs to improve on (and complaining about a rumba being too passionate). Brown, on the other hand, has been (rightly) criticized for her pageant queen perma-grin since Week 1, but the tough love she’s been getting has progressively gotten tougher.

On Monday, while Len Goodman liked her and Alan Bersten‘s jazz number to Donna Summer‘s “Bad Girls” (a terrible...
