Why Kevin Smith Paid Tribute To John Hughes In Dogma But Still Dumped On Home Alone
Image
I like to think that every filmmaker loves movies, but few filmmakers express their love of movies quite like Kevin Smith. Thanks to the success of "Clerks," he's arguably responsible for the frequency of characters discussing, debating, or simply referencing pop culture in film and television. (One of his jokes in that film even circled back and inspired the very franchise it alluded to in the case of "Andor.") He's also constantly popping up in documentaries (not to mention his podcast with Marc Bernardin) to give his thoughts on the intersection of art and culture. Smith is unapologetic in his acknowledgement of the art that shaped him, as well as the art that he thinks ... well ... sucks.

Of course, opinions and taste can change over time, but the blessing and curse of film is that whatever is recorded and makes it to the final cut is permanently frozen in time.

Criminal Minds: After 31 Years, I Found Out Joe Mantegna Was in One of the ’90s Greatest Cult-Hit $30M Comedies That We Still Celebrate Even Today
Image
It is fairly common to lose track of the movies that your favorite celebrity stars in, especially if it has been years. For instance, you would forgive one for forgetting that Ryan Reynolds was a part of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Joe Mantegna falls on that list for me.

The 77-year-old has been a part of many successful television series. His filmography is also nothing to joke about. Yet there remains one movie that he was a part of over 3 decades ago, one that has enthralled the world for years now.

Joe Mantegna will leave with a legacy worth remembering when he bids adieu to the industry Joe Mantegna has left an indelible mark on the industry || CBS

With a career spanning over 4 decades, Joe Mantegna has given fans many projects worth cherishing. Having been a part of classics like The Godfather Part III and House of Games, amongst others, it...

'The Lion King' Took Inspiration from a Shockingly Dark Source
Image
The Lion King is one of Disney's most celebrated films and is fondly remembered for its soundtrack, colorful characters, and gripping story. People of all ages still remember the first time they heard Timon and Pumba sing "Hakuna Matata," still cry in anguish when Mufasa falls to his death, and cheer for joy when Simba returns from exile to topple the evil Scar. With the upcoming release of The Lion King: Mufasa, it's more than apparent that the popularity and longevity of The Lion King are assured.

One particular scene in The Lion King, one which features the song "Be Prepared," takes on a much darker tone than the rest of what's featured in the film. The song's subject matter and lyrical content depict Scar's plans to overthrow his brother Mufasa and seize the throne. However, a considerable amount of the accompanying imagery takes styling cues from The Third Reich...

'One of My Greatest Inspirations': Mufasa Star Honors Original Lion King Actor James Earl Jones
Image
Aaron Pierre owes a great deal to the man whose iconic voice made Mufasa: The Lion King's protagonist such a Disney icon.

Speaking to GamesRadar about the challenges of playing young Mufasa, Pierre called the late James Earl Jones "a hero of mine, and a hero of many," citing the impact Jones' acting career had on his own. "He was one of my greatest inspirations, from his stage work to his extensive filmography, to his voice work. He's timeless. We celebrate him. We champion him. And he'll be greatly missed," Pierre added.

Baby's Day Out's director recalls a Fox VP's shock over The Lion King destroying the film at the box office.

The Director Of Baby's Day Out Says The Lion King Was The Reason Why It Failed
Image
Baby's Day Out, a 1994 family film, failed at the box office due to competition with The Lion King. The Lion King's success overshadowed Baby's Day Out, which struggled to make back its budget. Despite its low review scores, Baby's Day Out had potential with its cast, comedy/jeopardy mix, and groundbreaking special effects.

The director of Baby's Day Out, the 1994 family film with one of the cutest babies in history, has gone on record about the film's failure at the box office. Apparently, it was the fault of another youngster, albeit a furrier one, that proved to be one of the biggest movies of the decade.

The Lion King was released in direct competition with Baby's Day Out, and while the Patrick Read Johnson-directed movie struggled to even make back its budget, Disney's "Hamlet with lions" movie would go on to be considered one of the greatest animated movies of all time.

Baby's Day Out Director Recalls Getting Destroyed by The Lion King 30 Years Later
Image
Baby's Day Out was released in theaters on July 1, 1994. The big problem was that The Lion King was still dominating theaters at the time, leaving other family films like Baby's Day Out out in the cold.

Baby's Day Out was directed by Patrick Read Johnson and written by John Hughes. The family comedy tells the story of a baby from a wealthy family who gets abducted by kidnappers seeking a hefty ransom. They get more than they bargained for when the baby escapes and goes on an adventure through Chicago with the kidnappers in hot pursuit, hoping to recover the child so they can claim the ransom money. The film was a box office bomb, earning $30 million against a $48 million budget. Looking back, Johnson stated in a post on X that he can still remember the shock a Fox VP had over the film getting pummeled by The Lion King.

A John Hughes Flop Was Bigger Than ‘Star Wars’ in India
Image
Following the massive success of Home Alone, legendary writer-director John Hughes churned out more than a few half-baked scripts for family movies in which low-level criminals are brutalized by small children and/or adorable dogs. There was Dennis the Menace, Beethoven, heck, even the live-action version of 101 Dalmatians updated the classic story to include shabby crooks getting electrocuted in the balls.

But perhaps the wildest example of this trend is Baby’s Day Out, the 1994 comedy in which Joe Mantegna tries to kidnap an infant, with near-fatal results.

Unlike Home Alone, Baby’s Day Out wasn’t exactly a big hit. The film, which came out 30 years ago this week, made just over $16 million at the domestic box office, but cost $48 million to make. This was seemingly due to its cutting-edge animatronics. Had the filmmakers simply opted to imperil a real baby atop a skyscraper, it probably would have been a whole lot cheaper.

Criminal Minds Cast & Character Guide
Image
After a long wait, Criminal Minds: Evolution is finally back, with Season 2's premiere episode dropping recently. The Criminal Minds spinoff series shows no signs of stopping, either, as the folks at Paramount+ already renewed the show for a third season. A few notable faces have been missing from the show, but many characters could still return in a future Criminal Minds season.

Criminal Minds is a police procedural drama that aired from 2005 to 2020, with its soft reboot, Evolution, picking up on Paramount+ shortly after the original's end. They both follow the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit as they profile and analyze the worst-of-the-worst criminals, blending the psychology behind behavioral sciences and the action of a police procedural. Criminal Minds has a core group of profilers, with a few coming and going across the seasons, but all notable in their own ways.

Elias Voit is the Big Bad in Criminal Minds:...

Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
The episode of Revisited covering Hellboy II: The Golden Army was Written by Emilie Black, Edited by Ric Solomon, Narrated by Niki Minter, Produced by Tyler Nichols and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

Following the beloved Hellboy adaptation that was released in 2004 by Guillermo Del Toro, fans wanted more. As reviewed on a previous video, that one is excellent, so it was not surprising when the sequel was announced. Thus, in 2008, Hellboy II: The Golden Army (watch it Here) was released, and it ruled!

Let’s start with the rating here and it’s a complicated one for me. It’s actually hard to rate it because my reviewer brain, the part of me that is highly cinematically educated wants to give it an eight out of ten, which isn’t bad, but my heart wants to say it can’t be rated on a normal scale.

Tubi opens June with an intense WWII drama “Inglourious Basterds.” Allied officer Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) assembles a team of five tough Jewish soldiers to spread fear throughout the Third Reich. They have one assignment: assassinate Nazi leaders. Quentin Tarantino wrote and directed the unconventional war drama. Eli Roth, Melanie Laurent, and Christopher Walz co-star.

Watch the trailer of “Inglourious Basterds”:

The network is also streaming the original documentary “Mystery Unsolved: The Adnan Syed Story” on June 7. After serving 22 years in prison, Syed was released, still proclaiming his innocence. Now, he may return.

Another streamer original, “Magic Carpet Rides,” arrives June 14. It centers on a social influencer torn between sharing her budding romance or honoring her boyfriend’s request to keep their life private.

Hulu New Releases: March 2023
Image
Hulu’s list of new releases for March 2023 features an event long in the making.

On March 6, History of the World, Part II will finally arrive more than 40 years after Mel Brooks’ classic comedy History of the World, Part I. first premiered. Of course, Brooks never had any intention of adding future parts to his ahistorical film, but that yet makes the arrival of Part II so many years later even funnier. Described as a four-night comedy event, History of the World, Part II will release two episodes a day through March 9. Brooks returns to write and executive produce this series and will star alongside Nick Kroll, Wanda Sykes, and Ike Barinholtz. Guest stars include…everyone. Basically just everyone.

Everything Coming to Hulu in March 2023
Image
It’s ironic but unavoidable that the greatest annual celebration of film should be a television special — but that’s just how it is. March often means Oscar season, a time for cinephiles to boot up that small screen you use for movies and use it to see if they win any awards during a telecast.

If you don’t have TV service anymore, Hulu has you covered with a pre-Oscars telecast as well as two red carpet specials before and after the main event. Though the ceremony itself won’t be livestreamed on Hulu, it will be added the next morning, like regular ABC programming. Awards viewership has been in general decline over the past several years, but next-day streaming gives curious viewers a chance to join the conversation and boost those Oscar ratings after the live show. It’s also a chance for superfans to pause and rewind...

Seth Rogen in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (2023)
How Seth Rogen, Andy Samberg and Others Ended Up Writing Gory Cartoons for ‘The Boys Presents: Diabolical’
Seth Rogen in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (2023)
Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg and Looney Tunes; Andy Samberg and Korean drama; Aisha Tyler and romantic anime.

These are pairings that may not immediately seem obvious, but in the new animated anthology series “The Boys Presents: Diabolical,” they’re a delightful reality.

Rogen and Goldberg, Samberg, Tyler, Awkwafina, Justin Roiland, Garth Ennis and others wrote the episodes that make up this new show, all eight of which are now streaming on Amazon Prime Video, but “Diabolical” is far more than just an extension of the “The Boys” franchise – it’s a showcase for the unique creative voices of those involved. And for extremely graphic and gory cartoons.

Each of the eight episodes stands alone and has its own writer, director, animation studio and even score. They’re all distinct, so while binge-watching “Diabolical” you get a “Looney Tunes” riff followed by an episode straight out of “Rick and Morty” (aptly...

Rewatching ‘Home Alone’: It’s every kid’s dream to be left alone, until it comes true
Image
HollywoodIn #WatchWithTNM, we look back at this film about Kevin, a boy who wishes one night that he never has to see his family again.Nikhita VenugopalYears ago, when I was definitely old enough to know better, I woke up on an airplane still sitting on the tarmac and found that I was alone. My parents were almost certainly sitting next to me when I fell asleep, but now, the two seats next to me were empty. For about two minutes, I grappled with the only possible answer to my situation: They had left me. Turns out they hadn’t left me, and had just moved a few rows away to some empty seats. But for a few minutes, I got to imagine what I would do if I was totally and completely alone. In theory, it’s every kid’s dream to be left alone. No one to tell you what to do,...

'Stuart Little' Remake Planned at Sony
Michael J. Fox in Stuart Little (1999)
The wave of 90s nostalgia shows now signs of slowing down, and if you feel like you're in need of more anthropomorphic animals in your life, you're in luck! It's been almost a decade since we last saw everyone's fourth favorite talking mouse in Stuart Little 3: Call of the Wild. After his ten year absence, Sony and Red Wagon Entertainment finally feel the time is right for a Stuart Little remake.

News of the reboot comes from Tracking Board. They claim that this new Stuart Little will follow in the footsteps of the 1999 original. It will blend CG animation with live action. It will also once again follow the biplane flying mouse and his adoptive family The Littles.

The new movie will more closely follow E.B. White's 1945 children's book of the same name. It is being looked at as a more accurate adaptation than merely a remake of the existing films,...

What Was the Worst Summer Movie Weekend of the Past 20 Years?
Getaway (1992)
Summer's over, everyone! Especially at the box office. One of this weekend's wide releases, Getaway, currently has a Rotten Tomatoes rating south of 5 percent. Five percent! Another one is a concert documentary about the boy band One Direction. Slim pickings. But it could be worse. It honestly could be so much worse. We've taken a look at every summer weekend from the past twenty years and picked eight that are strong contenders for rock bottom. Baby's day out! Brian Austin Green was on daddy duty Friday in New York, taking son Noah out for a walk in a red stroller through SoHo without his wife Megan Fox. Fox gave birth to Noah in September 2012. Since his birth, the actress has maintained a relatively low public profile, only making her first official red carpet appearance in December. In February, she and her husband were spotted on vacation in Brazil, but Noah was not photographed with them.

Tiff Next Wave Review: Droids, Dreams and Destiny Come Together In 5-25-77
Whether you were one of the first to see it back in '77, or whether you were born well after the pop-culture bomb built by the man named George Lucas blew sky high, chances are Star Wars has impacted your life one way or another. Pretty much every movie fan has a story about the first time they saw the uber-classic space opera, but no one, and I mean no one, has a story like writer/director Patrick Read Johnson (Spaced Invaders, Dragonheart, Baby's Day Out), as recounted in his new film 5-25-77 (which is the date Sw was released for anyone who doesn't know).Pat (Freaks And Geeks' John Francis Daley) is a 70s-era small town teen, who makes films in his backyard with his family...

Selma Blair Takes Baby Arthur Out for a Stroll in Venice
Adam Robert Worton and Jacob Joseph Worton in Juniors freier Tag (1994)
Baby's day out! Selma Blair and her adorable son Arthur hit the town in Venice, Calif., Wednesday for a little mother-son bonding time, with the 40-year-old actress stopping at Cows End Coffee Shop for a cup o' joe along the way.  The pair went on to grab food and Blair stopped to chat with friends before taking her tiny tyke home. The 40-year-old actress and her 1-year-old tot seem to have a thing for the beach town.  The duo and Blair's hubby were spotted in the beachy town just last week cooling off with ice cream cones.

The 15 Most Badass Baldies in Movies
You talk a big game about your love of long-haired stars — your Johnny Depps, your Viggo Mortensens, your Hugh Jackmans — but there's something about a bare head that adds to the menace and allure of our favorite action stars.

Bane in "The Dark Knight Rises" is definitely one of the baddest baldies we've ever seen. Seeing all of the havoc he will wreak on Gotham in the upcoming movie encouraged us to dig deeper. Below, check out 14 guys — and one girl — whose naked scalps have scared and intimidated us for years.

Jason Statham

No one has tied his name more to a particular type of movie more than Jason Statham, to the point where all you have to say is, "It's a Jason Statham movie" and everyone knows exactly what you're talking about. Sometimes you're in the mood for Kurosawa. Other times, you want to see a man ram a shotgun up someone's ass.

Must Watch: 70-Minute Take Down Of Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull
It's been almost a year since we last posted a review from Red Letter Media's Mr. Plinkett. If you're not aware who that is by name, you may remember him as the guy who did the epic 70-minute review of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (and its subsequent sequels) as well as Avatar, Star Trek and Baby's Day Out. The last movie he reviewed was Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, and that was all the way back on New Year's Eve 2010. It's been a rough drought, but finally he is back and with a perfect target: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Check out both parts of the video below or over on Red Letter Media's site. The thing that's so great about these reviews (and the reason why we keep posting them) is because they're not only intelligent breakdowns of disappointing films, but they...

Where is "77"?
A few years ago, Star Wars fans waited eagerly for the release of a film about a group of friends who travel cross country trying to acquire a copy of The Phantom Menace before its theatrical release. The movie was Fanboys, a film that spoke to Star Wars fans in a way no other movie had before. Despite some much publicized issues with the script, and some story tweaks and movie studio meddling, the film was released and eventually came to DVD. There was mixed reaction, but fans of Star Wars were thrilled to have a movie that spoke to their love of the franchise.

The galaxy rejoiced and all was well. Except...

There was another movie, announced well before Fanboys, that piqued my interest. Cut from a similar cloth, it was called 5-25-77, a nod to the original release date of Star Wars: A New Hope. Written...

Must Watch: 110 Minute Take Down Of Star Wars: Revenge Of The Sith
It has been far, far too long since we last heard from Mr. Plinkett and Red Letter Media. For those that don't remember, Plinkett is the online critic who broke out onto the scene this time last year with a 70-minute review of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. In addition to being incredibly in depth and informative, taking the viewer both through the film minute-by-minute and behind the production, the video was also screamingly hilarious, if not totally fucked up (Plinkett also happens to be a psychotic serial killer who keeps women locked in his basement). Since his Phantom Menace review, he's taken extended looks at Avatar, Star Wars Episode II: Attack of The Clones, Baby's Day Out, and J.J. Abrams' Star Trek. Now we have the video that we've all been waiting for: Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. This time clocking in at...

Movie News Quick Hits: First 'Thor' Poster, DreamWorks' 'Me and My Shadow,' 'Kill the Irishman' Trailer
Filed under: Trailers and Clips, Movie News, Cinematical

- Marvel have released the first official poster for 'Thor,' which hits theaters May 2011. You can check out the poster in full at the bottom of this post, but also check back at Cinematical this evening when the first 'Thor' trailer is expected to hit.

- DreamWorks Animation have carved out a March 2013 spot for the very intriguing project 'Me and My Shadow,' a film about the rogue shadow of "the world's most boring human" that will blend CGI and hand-drawn animation much in the same way 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit' blended live-action with hand-drawn animation.

- "Inspired" (if you can call it that) by the E-Trade commercials featuring a talking baby, Fox is currently shaping together an untitled comedy about babies that escape daycare and presumably get up to all kinds of 'Baby's Day Out' hilarity.

Raumschiff Enterprise (1966)
Mr. Plinkett’s 67 Minute Video Review of Jj Abrams’ Star Trek
Raumschiff Enterprise (1966)
Mr. Plinkett from Red Letter Media (Aka the guy who put together the epic, 70-minute review of The Phantom Menace, the 90-minute review of Attack of the Clones , and the 25-minute dissection of Baby's Day Out). His latest hilarious yet-informative video is a 67-minute review of Jj Abrams' Star Trek reboot. And after tearing the Next Generation Trek movies to shreds, guess what -- he actually liked this one. Here is what Mr. Plinkett says: No, it's not the Episode 3 review, but it is something. I needed a break from Star Wars and I had recently re-watched Star Trek so I wanted to discuss it and my thoughts on it in detail. Finally. This review is more of an analysis on the making of the film and Trek in general more than your typical Mr. Plinkett complaint-fest. Enjoy friends! You can watch both parts embedded after the jump. Part 1:...

Well, would you look at that! Pauly Shore is still around, and here is an interview with him. I'll tell ya, as far as minimally-talented washed-up comedians go, he seems a hell of a lot cooler than that Gallagher asshole. (Av Club)

Remember how I mentioned about Jeremy London and his highly suspect "kidnapping" which was taken straight out of an episode of "Six Feet Under?" Yeah, well shit just got real. Real sad. Turns out he and his wife are both addicts who lost custody of their son. (Evil Beet)

"True Blood" is only two episodes into Season Three and it's already been given the go ahead for Four. Well, obviously. You don't have to be a marketing genius to know that Vampires + Nudity = $$$$$$$$$! (The Flickcast)

David Simon basically thinks that people are too stupid to appreciate "Treme." I haven't caught up with "Treme" yet, but I've found that...

70-Minute Phantom Menace Reviewer Destroys Baby's Day Out
I have not been short with my praise for Red Letter Media. No clue who or what that is? He's the brilliant mind behind the 70-minute review of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, the shorter-but-still-great review of Avatar, and the 90-minute review of Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones. While are largely seen as simply being hilarious and creepy, they are also incredibly insightful and well-researched. While we wait for his review of Revenge of the Sith, however, he has released a new video. What modern masterpiece has he decided to tackle this time? Patrick Read Johnson's Baby's Day Out, best known for being the worst thing John Hughes ever wrote. Few people are willing to burn 99 minutes of their life watching the actual film, so why would you want to spend 25 minutes listening to a guy rip it to shreds? The simple answer is...

The 'Phantom Menace' Guy Tackles 'Baby's Day Out'
Adam Robert Worton and Jacob Joseph Worton in Juniors freier Tag (1994)
Remember back in December when a seventy-minute long video review of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace was all the rage? And then the same guy returned to the Intertubes four months later to do a nearly ninety-minute long review of Attack of the Clones? Well, now he's back with another review of a brilliant cinematic milestone, Patrick Read Johnson's ground-breaking 1994 film, Baby's Day Out.

I'm sad to report that at a mere twenty-five minutes it's not actually quite as long as his Star Wars' reviews, but it is just as funny-- plus, surprisingly, it actually has a bit of internal continuity with his Clones' video, proving he puts more thought and effort into these videos than 99% of people who hop on YouTube to complain about a movie. Sure, making fun of a flick as menial and pointless as Baby's Day Out is as easy as shooting...

Phantom Menace Guy’s 25 Minute Review of Baby’s Day Out
Adam Robert Worton and Jacob Joseph Worton in Juniors freier Tag (1994)
Mike from Red Letter Media (Aka the guy who put together the epic, 70-minute review of The Phantom Menace and the 90-minute review of Attack of the Clones) has moved on past sci-fi and is now doing shorter video reviews. The newest is a twenty five minute dissection of the Patrick Read Johnson's 1994 film Baby's Day Out. Now you might be saying: "I don't really need to watch a 25 minute video review of Baby's Day Out." Out of all the movies in the history of cinema, I'm not sure what compelled them to pick this John Hughes-penned family comedy. And while on the surface it might seem like a movie like Baby's Day Out would be easy to rip apart, Red Letter Media does it in a well-researched yet humorous approach, offering insights and laughs you never thought you'd get from such a review/dissection. Hit the jump...

Stars, Collaborators Remember John Hughes
While John Hughes's The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Home Alone proved to be both box-office powerhouses as well as culturally significant landmarks, his sudden death from a heart attack Thursday is proving equally noteworthy, for the shockwaves it is sending throughout the acting community that he helped to launch. Known as the "Brat Pack" - a term coined in a 1985 New York magazine feature on the then-rising Hughes and the cast of his coming-of-age comedies - the writer-director-producer's stable of fresh-faced performers included such now-household names as Sean Penn, Steve Carell, Macaulay Culkin, Matthew Broderick, Jon Cryer,...

John Hughes, a legendary writer/producer/director responsible for many 80s classics, has died. According to TMZ, Hughes suffered a heart attack while taking a morning walk during a trip to NYC to visit family. Hughes’ robust career saw him write and direct Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Planes, Trains & Automobiles, She's Having a Baby, Uncle Buck and Curly Sue. Sue was the last film Hughes directed, but he never stopped writing. In addition to scripting other 80s classics such as Vacation, European Vacation, Christmas Vacation, The Great Outdoors and Pretty in Pink, Hughes also penned all three Home Alone movies, Beethoven, Baby's Day Out and Disney’s Flubber. More recently Hughes provided the story for Drillbit Taylor and Maid in Manhattan, under his alias Edmond Dantes. He was 59.

Imho "Southland" (1.2): Mozambique
The second episode of police drama Southland aired on NBC last night, and the show has officially hooked me thanks to the wonderfully gruff gay character of John Cooper (Michael Cudlitz) and his increasingly interesting relationship with wet-behind-the-ears new cop partner Ben Sherman (Ben McKenzie).

I have to admit to being skeptical about this show after last week's premiere. I loved the no-nonsense character of John, but most of the other characters (including rookie cop Ben) left me cold.

But this week delved more into the character development of former blank slate Ben and the mentoring relationship between him and John. Ben is feeling quite cocky after last week's heroics (where he shot a bad guy) and after receiving congratulations from random cops on the street can barely get his swollen head into the squad car.

His "Top Cop" status is short-lived when he makes a ... rookie mistake (ha!) and...
