Martin Scorsese has time and again proven why he ranks amongst the best filmmakers of today and his work will certainly be talked about for centuries to come. From Goodfellas (1990) to Shutter Island (2010), Martin Scorsese has a ton of gems in his portfolio but a sixteen-minute-long short film will remain to be the most unique work of his career.

Back in 2015, Martin Scorsese brought together a star-studded ensemble both in front of and behind the camera to create The Audition. The project is unlike any other short film the world has seen and was actually created as a clever way of advertising a casino when mainland China banned any and all advertising of casinos.

Martin Scorsese is acknowledged for his multiple collaborations with two of Tinseltown’s finest leading men, Leonardo DiCaprio & Robert De Niro. As giants in their field, they’ve individually contributed to Scorsese with masterful performances that have shaken audiences and critics alike.
Yet, having already gifted us cinematic treasures like Mean Streets and Taxi Driver, Scorsese once found himself at a harrowing crossroads. Is a masterpiece really born out of a personal crisis? Well, the answer lies in Scorsese’s own phoenix-like rise from the ashes of adversity, as he faced a dire period marred by substance abuse, depression, and the chilly reception of his bold musical New York, New York.

It took a hospital bed realization and the profound intervention of his artistic compatriot, Robert De Niro, to channel his turbulent experience into the creation of Raging Bull.

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: It’s Time for IndieWire After the Dark Underside of Suburbia
I’ve long felt that the premise of “This Suburban Utopia Has Something Dark Lurking Underneath It” is among the lamest, most played-out tropes in all of media. Decades have passed since any serious person viewed the stylized suburban innocence of “Leave It to Beaver” as a remotely accurate depiction of American life, and contemporary attempts at “subverting” it often feel as if artists are mocking the same media that they grew up watching other artists mock without pausing...

Exclusive: Jonathan Keasey, the scribe behind Danielle Deadwyler’s Parallel and Demi Lovato’s Tow, has signed on to adapt The Barracks Thief, a novella from award-winning author Tobias Wolff.
Keasey joins playwright Tyler Rivenbark on the project. The pair will collaborate on the screenplay based on Wolff’s novella.
Wolff, an Emeritus professor at Stanford, is best known as a memoirist. Most notably, his 1989 book This Boy’s Life: A Memoir was adapted for the screen by Michael Caton-Jones, with Leonardo DiCaprio starring as the teenage Wolff in his breakout big-screen performance and Robert De Niro as his abusive step-father Dwight.
The Barracks Thief is the story of three young paratroopers waiting to be shipped out to Vietnam. Brought together one sweltering afternoon to stand guard over an ammunition dump threatened by a forest fire, they discover in each other an unexpected capacity for recklessness and violence. Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire are truly friendship goals. The two celebrities have consistently busted the myth that long-lasting friendships between A-list stars in Hollywood cannot stand the test of time. Despite being constantly in competition with each other for roles, DiCaprio and Maguire have forged an endearing bond that began when both stars were 12 years old.

“Killers of the Flower Moon” star Lily Gladstone embraces her monumental responsibility as an Oscar nominee, utilizing her platform to advocate for the Indigenous community and hoping to pave the way for more actors like herself.

“Honestly, you could hold both teams accountable,” Gladstone tells Variety. “The 49ers are based on the California Gold Rush, which was an incredibly brutal time for California Indians. Adding improv to a film is a bit like adding truffle to a recipe: a little goes a long way. And when you're making a movie with a legendary director like Martin Scorsese, the script likely doesn't need any creative seasoning at all. Leonardo DiCaprio found this out on the set of "Killers of the Flower Moon," in which he plays brainless criminal Ernest Burkhart.
Speaking to the Wall Street Journal profile, Scorsese recalled that he found himself side-eyeing DiCaprio's attempts to improve upon the great script from himself and co-writer Eric Roth more than once on set. "Every now and then, Bob and I would look at each other and roll our eyes a little bit," the filmmaker said, referencing DiCaprio's co-star Robert De Niro. "And we'd tell [DiCaprio], 'You don't need that dialogue.'"

Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio have worked closely together for nearly a quarter of a century starting with “Gangs of New York” and now, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” their sixth feature film together. DiCaprio stars in the film as Ernest Burkhart, who served as a hitman for his uncle (Robert De Niro) while being involved in the Osage murders in 1920s Oklahoma. At the National Board of Review Gala in New York City on January 11, Scorsese accepted the awards for Best Picture and Best Director, while Lily Gladstone also won Best Actress for her portrayal of Mollie Burkhart.

Exclusive: Since Jack Dawson made him a top global star in Titanic, Leonardo DiCaprio has largely avoided the straight hero route in favor of shaded, conflicted characters in films from The Revenant to The Departed, The Aviator, Gangs of New York, The Wolf Of Wall Street, Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood, and others. But he’d never gone to the degree he did on Killers of the Flower Moon. The first version of the film had almost everything going for it: the David Grann bestseller bought for a shocking $5 million by Imperative Entertainment, a script Eric Roth wrote, and the first teaming of Martin Scorsese, DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, the latter going mano a mano for the first time since This Boy’s Life established a teenaged DiCaprio as the young actor to watch.

Sin, forgiveness, the glamour of evil, Barbara Stanwyck, Marlon Brando, terrible preview screenings for “Goodfellas,” Robert De Niro’s silence and, of course, “Killers of the Flower Moon” were all topics of conversation during Montclair Film Festival’s Filmmaker Tribute to Martin Scorsese on October 27 at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center.
The director, who has received 14 Oscar nominations, was in the Garden State for the festival’s annual “An Evening With Stephen Colbert” fundraiser. Colbert, a Montclair resident, has long been a booster of the event, which is currently in its 12th year.
During their conversation, Scorsese told Colbert that Robert De Niro not only convinced him to make “Raging Bull,” which earned the director an Academy Award nomination, but also urged him to work with Leonardo DiCaprio in 1993 after the release of “This Boy’s Life.” The helmer also addressed De Niro’s notoriously tight-lipped demeanor.

After nearly a decade, one of cinema’s most iconic filmmaking duos is back together again. “Killers of the Flower Moon” sees Martin Scorsese return to cinemas for his first film since 2019’s “The Irishman,” along with the two actors whose screen presence has helped define his filmography. The first is Robert De Niro, his longtime muse since his breakout film “Mean Streets” in 1973. The second is the much younger Leonardo DiCaprio, who reunites with the older statesman 10 years after “The Wolf of Wall Street.”

One of the more memorable scenes in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon finds Robert De Niro’s William King Hale disciplining his nephew, Leonardo DiCaprio’s Ernest Burkhart, with a paddle. And while a little movie magic could have prevented DiCaprio from taking a genuine whooping, according to cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, each whack was the real deal.
Prieto – who has lensed all of Scorsese’s films since 2013’s The Wolf of Wall Street – told Insider that while DiCaprio did utilize padding on his keister, there were multiple takes of De Niro wailing on his co-star. “I do remember doing them quite a few times and thinking, ‘Oh, that must hurt…There was some padding on his butt. But you could tell De Niro was really hitting him.” Hey, De Niro is known for immersing himself in his roles, and taking a paddle to DiCaprio’s butt is no different.

Martin Scorsese Explains Why Robert De Niro And Leonardo DiCaprio Are His Most Trusted Collaborators
The idea of putting together a group that enjoys working as a team is a notion as old as time, yet there remains something special about the notion of an artistic repertory company. This is a group that exists not just to perform a task with a certain level of quality, but to explore each of their own personalities (as well as each other's) while plumbing the human condition for new corners of interest. In other words, it's about combining the familiarity and camaraderie of long-time friends and coworkers with the blank slate of artistic creation.
Of course, these explorations can't go as far or be as truthful without a remarkable amount of trust being involved, and that's precisely what director Martin Scorsese values in his own "repertory company" members. Some of Scorsese's detractors may think of his continued casting of Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio as a sort of laziness,...

Watching the massive new epic "Killers of the Flower Moon" is not simply a reminder of the remarkable depth and complexity of Martin Scorsese as a filmmaker, but a reminder that so few other people working in film today are operating at even half of his level. Though Scorsese is now past 80 years old, his energy, style, and sharp fury in documenting the evils littering America in its storied centuries remain in striking focus in this neo-Western that is unrelenting in capturing the cruelty wrought by selfish, venal men towards a Native American tribe whose perverse fortune in being forcibly moved to an oil-rich land is countered by being treated inhumanely by the same people who dared to make them leave their homeland. "Killers of the Flower Moon" is a remarkable, intense, unflinching film; such adjectives are appropriate in defining so many of Scorsese's pictures, but it is no less...

Killers of the Flower Moon marks the 10th feature collaboration between Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro and the sixth between the maestro and Leonardo DiCaprio. But it will be the first big screen teaming for all three and with that came a wave of excitement from cinephiles. But that doesn’t mean there weren’t some minor personality clashes on set, as Scorsese revealed that DiCaprio’s constant improvisations and looser style led to the director and De Niro rolling their eyes behind his back.
In a new piece in The Wall Street Journal, Scorsese said DiCaprio brought an “endless, endless, endless!” amount of ad-libbing, which prompted De Niro to further delve into his own trademark ways. “Then Bob didn’t want to talk. Every now and then, Bob and I would look at each other and roll our eyes a little bit. And we’d tell him, ‘You don’t need that dialogue.

It’s always the father-son stories that get me. Bicycle Thieves, This Boy’s Life and The Pursuit of Happyness, to name a few. There are so many more. There is just something about them, and the ones I named are at the top of the list, if you know what I mean. Even the ones that are a little shoddy at times generate a lot of emotions in me, especially if they feature a conflict between a father and a son. Netflix’s Crypto Boy has a nice template for its story to work. The beats are there, and the film is shot very well.
Crypto Boy‘s plot revolves around Omar and Amir. There is a bit in the names as well. Amir, the only son of the widower Omar, has great ambition in him, not just to earn money but to ‘generate wealth’, a catchphrase heard at a convention related to cryptocurrency.

Martin Scorsese delivers another late-period masterpiece with Killers of the Flower Moon, an American tragedy that proves once again that no filmmaker is better at examining crime, guilt and greed, and the ways they are intimately woven into America’s DNA.
Based on David Grann’s best-selling nonfiction book, the movie tells the story of the Osage tribe, whose members were made rich after being relocated to Oklahoma land atop vast oil reserves. As the film begins, Scorsese captures Osage members jetting around town in fancy clothes and sleek cars while their white neighbors hustle to get some cash by taking their picture, selling tires or begging for a loan.

These days it’s somewhat difficult to fathom there was a time when Leonardo DiCaprio was not recognized as one of the finest actors of his generation. Born with preternaturally good looks, talent, and an obvious degree of taste, DiCaprio has grown onscreen from precocious child actor to heartthrob, to movie star, and finally to revered leading man. At least onscreen.
With that meteoric career-trajectory beginning at the remarkably early age of 18 in the movie This Boy’s Life, DiCaprio has had the rare opportunity to carefully curate and shape his career from virtually the beginning, and in the process has left behind a body of work that is increasingly choosey—and well chosen. But which are the best performances, and which are the ones that didn’t work out? Read on to find out.

Apple Original Films’ Killers of the Flower Moon marks the 16th time Martin Scorsese has worked with either Robert De Niro or Leonardo DiCaprio in a feature-length film, yet it’s the first Scorsese film that includes both actors in starring roles. Scorsese and De Niro began their 50-year association with 1973’s Mean Streets. 1976’s Taxi Driver, 1977’s New York, New York, 1980’s Raging Bull, 1983’s The King of Comedy, 1990’s Goodfellas, 1991’s Cape Fear, and 1995’s Casino followed, cementing their relationship as one of the most successful actor-director teams.
After a nearly 25-year break, Scorsese and De Niro reunited for 2019’s The Irishman, and now they’re back together again for 2023’s Killers of the Flower Moon.
During the two-decade break in the Scorsese / De Niro films, the Oscar-winning director cast Leonardo DiCaprio in 2002’s Gangs of New York, 2004’s The Aviator, 2006’s The Departed, 2010’s Shutter Island, and...

Filmmaker Martin Scorsese returns to theaters just in time to take on Taylor Swift in the second weekend of her record-setting “The Eras Tour” concert movie. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
“Killers of the Flower Moon” is Scorsese’s first movie since “The Irishman” in 2019, which ultimately ended up on Netflix. Adapted from David Grann‘s 2017 true-crime novel, it’s about a group of unscrupulous white men in the 1920s trying to rob the Osage Nation of Oklahoma out of their oil money.
“Killers” reunites Scorsese with two of the actors with whom he’s collaborated the most, Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, though this is only the second time they star in one of his movies together.

Ahead of the premiere of Martin Scorsese’s highly anticipated Killers of the Flower Moon in theaters around the world, including IMAX® theaters, this Friday, October 20, Apple Original Films today unveiled the final trailer for the upcoming feature film starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro and Lily Gladstone.
Killers of the Flower Moon is an epic western crime saga, where real love crosses paths with unspeakable betrayal. Based on a true story and told through the improbable romance of Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Mollie Kyle (Lily Gladstone), Killers of the Flower Moon tracks the suspicious murders of members of the Osage Nation, who became some of the richest people in the world overnight after oil was discovered underneath their land. Killers of the Flower Moon also stars Robert De Niro and Jesse Plemons, and is directed by Academy Award winner Martin Scorsese from a screenplay by Eric Roth and Martin Scorsese,...

Continuing to build anticipation for the new Martin Scorsese-directed feature “Killers of the Flower Moon” that’s being released in theaters via Paramount Pictures this Friday, Apple Original Films dropped a trailer (its third) today that gives a quick overview of the $200 million Western epic. The film focuses on the murders of a number of wealthy Osage Nation members for their oil money in 1920s Oklahoma. It reunites Scorsese with his longtime acting collaborators Leonardo DiCaprio – who plays Ernest Buckhart, the charmingly conniving husband of Osage oil heiress Mollie Kyle (Lily Gladstone) – and Robert De Niro, who portrays the villainous business magnate William Hale. Watch the new trailer above.
The film earned rave notices out of its Cannes Film Festival world premiere in May. It’s been at or near the top of the combined Oscar handicap odds at Gold Derby since it premiered and finds itself in second...

Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” is a culmination of sorts for Scorsese and his two most frequent collaborators, Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio. The upcoming Apple film – which debuts in theaters on October 20 via Paramount – marks the 10th time Scorsese and De Niro have worked together on a feature and the sixth time Scorsese and DiCaprio have joined forces. It’s also the first film of Scorsese’s lengthy career to feature both actors simultaneously.
That it took so long for the three men to work together on a film might seem surprising – Scorsese has said De Niro was at least about both “Gangs of New York” and “The Departed” – but it was also kind of inevitable. After all, Scorsese first heard about DiCaprio from De Niro after the “Raging Bull” Oscar winner starred in “This Boy’s Life” opposite the young actor.

You can now add Martin Scorsese’s hotly anticipated Killers of the Flower Moon to the films undergoing a delay—at least for a few weeks, anyway. In a curious move by the film’s studio and distributor, Apple and Paramount Pictures, respectively, the eagerly awaited Western crime epic has canceled its limited Oct. 6 release date in the U.S. and will now instead open in wide release on Oct. 20, both in North America and various other global markets, including the UK.
And, curiouser still, the film will also be released in IMAX.
The news should be giddy to cinephiles and movie buffs the world over who have been dining well the last month on another populist auteur who put a three-hour-plus adult drama in IMAX. At a glance the move even raises the question of whether Apple and Paramount believe they have another Oppenheimer on their hands.

Robert De Niro has been a frequent presence at the Academy Awards, winning his first Oscar as Best Supporting Actor for playing young Vito Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather, Part II” (1974). He hit the jackpot yet again for his role as boxer Jake Lamotta in Scorsese’s “Raging Bull” (1980), which brought him a victory in Best Actor. “Taxi Driver” (1976), “The Deer Hunter” (1978), “Awakenings” (1990) and “Cape Fear” (1991) earned him subsequent nominations in lead, and he reaped another bid in supporting for “Silver Linings Playbook” (2012) and one in Best Picture for “The Irishman” (2019).
Though he’s worked with some of Hollywood’s top directors, De Niro is best known for his collaborations with Martin Scorsese, starting with “Mean Streets” (1973) and leading to “Taxi Driver,” “New York, New York” (1977), “The King of Comedy” (1983), “Goodfellas” (1990), “Cape Fear,” “Casino” (1995) and “The Irishman.” Never ones to rest on their laurels, the duo are...

In the vast tapestry of Oscar history, specific years define instants of talents converging to produce a constellation of extraordinary performances. 1993 was one such epoch when the best supporting actor lineup at the 66th Academy Awards ceremony showcased an assembly of unparalleled depth. The roster included Leonardo DiCaprio for “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape,” Ralph Fiennes for “Schindler’s List,” John Malkovich for “In the Line of Fire,” Pete Postlethwaite for “In the Name of the Father,” and ultimate victor, Tommy Lee Jones for “The Fugitive.”
Looking back on the 30th anniversary of Warner Bros’ taut thriller, “The Fugitive” from director Andrew Davis, Variety reflects on how Jones’ win anchored one of the single best Oscar lineups of all time.

While Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny didn’t quite make the splash it was hoping to make when it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this year, another movie that made its debut there (to much greater success) is Martin Scorsese’s new anticipated drama Killers of the Flower Moon. This film brings a collaboration of Scorsese’s two prominent go-to actors of his career, Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio. Both of them have worked together previously, portraying father and son in 1993’s This Boy’s Life from director Michael Caton-Jones. However, the standout performance that audiences have been raving about is Lily Gladstone, as DiCaprio’s Native American spouse.
Apple has recently released a new trailer for the drama. And the official synopsis reads,
At the turn of the 20th century, oil brought a fortune to the Osage Nation, who became some of the richest people in the world overnight.

Brendan Fraser's richly deserved comeback crested last March when he won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale." It was the end of a long, hard road that began in the 2000s with a messy divorce, an alleged sexual assault at the groping hands of the then-president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and a deep depression caused by the death of his mother. Fraser had gone from being one of the most exciting talents of his generation to a C-level movie star.
That generation included Chris O'Donnell, Matt Damon, and Ben Affleck, all three of whom co-starred with Fraser in the 1992 antisemitism drama "School Ties." They were all often in competition for the same roles, but they eventually made their own way in the industry. Fraser's square-jawed good looks and comedic gifts landed him leading roles in "The Mummy" and "George of the Jungle,...

When Leonardo DiCaprio introduced the Life Achievement Award at the Screen Actors Guild annual ceremony in 2020, he recalled his father taking him to the cinema to watch "Midnight Run" when he was 13 years old. During the film, his dad said to him:
"If you really want to be an actor and get into this profession, if you want to understand what great acting is, you watch that man on screen."
No, he wasn't talking about Charles Grodin; he was referring to the actor honored that night for his legendary career, Robert De Niro. A few years after that trip to the movie house, DiCaprio found himself starring alongside the legendary actor in "This Boy's Life." Whether you lined up outside the Palais de Festivals hours in advance or deliriously refreshed the web for minute-to-minute updates from halfway around the world, the long-awaited unveiling of Martin Scorsese’s “The Killers of the Flower Moon” at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival felt like a historic cinematic event.
Based on the best-selling nonfiction book of the same name by “The Lost City of Z” author David Grann, the film is set on the Osage reservation in 1920s Oklahoma – the decade of the Tulsa massacre. Recently discovered oil deposits enrich the settlement, making the Osage the wealthiest people in the world per capita, but “many, so many hungry wolves” soon follow. Chief amongst them are corrupt cattleman William Hale (Robert De Niro) and his nephew, Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio), the latter of whom infiltrates the community by marrying a prominent local (Lily Gladstone). Jim Gray, former Principal Chief of the Osage Nation, has some high praise for Martin Scorsese's "Killers of the Flower Moon" after taking in a private screening of the film ahead of its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this weekend.
Scorsese's 3.5-hour true-crime drama, per the official Apple TV+ synopsis, "is set in 1920s Oklahoma and depicts the serial murder of members of the oil-wealthy Osage Nation, a string of brutal crimes that came to be known as the Reign of Terror." The first teaser trailer for "Killers of the Flower Moon" sees Leonardo DiCaprio's narrator flipping through a book about Osage culture and history, as he explains in voiceover how the "Children of the Middle Waters," as the tribe is known, "took their name from Missouri and Osage Rivers."

With his relatively new found freedom to make movies to run as long as he sees fit, Martin Scorsese embarks on a controversial slice of American history about a conspiracy to deprive the Osage Native American people of their oil rich resources and lands, involving enforcement by the FBI and J Edgar Hoover.
It unfurls on a vast canvas and brings together, for the first time since This Boy’s Life in 1993, the talents of Robert DeNiro as a cattleman who thinks he has good relations with the 'locals' and Leonardo DiCaprio as his ambitious nephew, a First World War Veteran with an eye on the main chance.

This year’s Killers of the Flower Moon marks the 10th major collaboration between Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro, it further solidifies the pair as one of the most iconic director/actor teams in cinema history. But that doesn’t mean it comes easy, as sometimes they just aren’t feeling it.
Scorsese and De Niro had an incredible run beginning with 1973’s Mean Streets, with classics like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, and more following. But after 1995’s Casino, the collaborations seemed to wear cement shoes. The reason? As Scorsese tells Deadline, sometimes there’s just a general disinterest from one of the parties.
Explaining why it took 24 years between collaborations–Scorsese and De Niro didn’t work together again until 2019’s The Irishman–the director said, “After Casino we stopped for a while and I did Kundun, and Bringing Out the Dead. And then Gangs of New York.

It’s the end of the world as we know it and HBO Max feels fine. The Warner Bros. Discovery streamer’s list of new releases for January 2023 is highlighted by one long-awaited post-apocalyptic adventure.
HBO’s TV adaptation of beloved video game The Last of Us premieres on Jan. 15. Created by Chernobyl writer Craig Mazin, this story will follow the game storyline of Joel (Pedro Pascal) guiding 14-year-old Ellie (Bella Ramsey) through a virus-ridden wasteland towards hope. It’s probably gonna be awesome.
The other big original series this month is animated mystery comedy Velma. Brought to life by Mindy Kaling, this show will be all about Scooby-Doo’s bespectacled buddy Velma Dinkley. Jinkies indeed!
There aren’t any major HBO Max original movie releases this January. The first of the month sees the arrival of Ghostbusters (1984), Hereditary, John Wick, and more. Recent theatrical release The Menu premieres on Jan.

This Boy’s Life: Crialese Cuts Corners in Well-Meant Trans Coming-of-Age Drama
Director Emanuele Crialese explores the slow disintegration of a dysfunctional family in 1970s Rome with L’immensita, his first narrative feature since the 2011 immigration drama Terraferma. Uniting coming-of-age tropes with women’s repression, there’s a lot going on under one roof in a tale about a phenomenal mother whose only outlet for expression and love is through her three children. With her eldest daughter having long determined a new gender identity both parents and the culture around them refuses to recognize, tensions have been threatening to reach a boiling point for an unhappy family despite their relocation to a swank new high-rise.…...
