The pilot episode of SEAQUEST DSV runs for the length of two episodes and does the job of introducing all of the main characters and setting to the viewer. This seems to be a more modern updating of the old VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA plot, complete with new-fangled technology from talking dolphins to holograms and the like, which reminded me a great deal of STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION. Of the cast, Roy Scheider obviously stands out, and it's nice to see the great man getting plenty of screen time here. The villainous characters seem a little shoehorned into the plot at times but this works well overall.

SeaQuest DSV had all the signs of becoming a science fiction classic. Stephen Spielberg on board as a producer,Rockne O'Bannion who also created the magnificent Farscape was the show's creator. A wonderful cast headed by Roy Scheider,lavish production values,but ultimately the show floundered.The first season was the best even as the show was trying,like all series in their freshman year,to find their way.I find that the most exciting time period in a series.They are still experimenting with the premise & relationships & haven't fallen into the formulaic rut that can take over many sf shows.Somehow this series never seemed to come together for me.You could see the fallout;Roy Scheider wanted out,there was a revolving door for the cast,& they even had the sub abducted to another planet & then later brought back but in the future.All were desperate attempts to remold the show & all of them were atrocious.Some people postulate that the premise of exploring the oceans of the earth simply cannot compare to spaceships exploring the universe.Ironic that both SQ & Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea fell to the same fate after a pretty good first season.It will be unfortunate if nobody attempts another sf show dealing with the seas,as so few series have ever been made.But it may well be a long time before we ever see another stab at this concept.

SeaQuest DSV first aired in September of 1993. With Roy Scheider as the leading roll (Captain Nathan Bridger), SeaQuest and it's cast offered true potential in its first Season. The first Season was composed of episodes which offered some scientific facts and were interesting to watch. It also offered some development of the current cast.
However, with that character development and the end of the first season, I expected much of the cast to return for the second season, which was not the case. Although the Second Season included most of the Main cast, a few were missing, such as: Dr. Kristin Westphalen, Lt. Cmdr. Katherine Hitchcock, Benjamin Krieg, Chief Manilow Crocker, Security Chief, etc.
Although the Second Season added new casts, I felt the story lines were getting more far fetched. With the introduction of "Daggers" and Aliens into the story, I felt the Season was straying away from exploration of the sea, maybe the writers ran out of ideas??? Anyway, the Second Season was again a development of the New characters. It did include some scientific facts in the storyline, but was drowned by more of the far-fetched stories which had nothing to do with the Submarine and Sea Exploration.
After the Second Season came to a close, I expected yet again a huge cast change for the third season, which did prove true. With a New Captain introduced, the third Season lost my interested. SeaQuest 2032 was all about military story lines and a more far-fetched storyline as ever. Also, I feel that when Roy Scheider left, the season completely sank. SeaQuest 2032 was pulled half way through the Season with only 13 Episodes completed.

Both series of this show were excellent. they had true to life story lines and characters. There have only been 2 other scifi series that I have enjoyed and they are the star trek (all of the series) and battle star galactica shows. I wish that they would put these shows back on, also, I would like to see them do some more of the seaquest dsv shows to inform the audiance of what has happened to the crew since.

In the twenty-first century, the nations of the world have expanded their spheres of influence to include the ocean, the last unexplored territory on Earth. Because of the pervasion of pirates, terrorists, and war-mongers, the nations of the world have built an experimental submarine named the Seaquest. Seaquest's job is the maintain the peace of the world. Seaquest was one of those unforgettable science fiction shows that was driven by the strength of its characters and the quality of the writing. With adventure, drama, and danger, this series promised something for everyone. There was even a treat for animal lovers in the form of Darwin, Seaquest's resident dolphin who, thanks to an experimental computer program that allowed him to talk, gave the crew of the Seaquest a unique insights into the world, as well as a look at the world of humans from a dolphin's perspective. Seaquest offered a galaxy of guest stars, including Charlton Heston and William Shatner. This is a sci-fi series that definitely went before its time.
Good middle-of-the-road science fiction show

This used to be on at 7:30 Sundays in the mid-90's, it saved me from countless hours of tedium during weekly visits to my grandparents for dinner every Sunday.
Seaquest created the underwater near-future world quite well, it had interesting stories and good actors, notably Roy Schieder, the second in command (also seen in "Seven Days") and the guy from 21 Jump Street. The show never really recovered after Schieder left although I'm sure they did their best under the circumstances.
Seaquest DSV was a show that was easy to like and one of the few deep sea-related shows around (there's not too many movies either). There was even a Seaquest DSV game on the Super Nintendo, brought back pleasant memories at the time.

I really liked this show when it aired in Sweden last summer. Never missed it. My favorite character is Lucas Wolenczak. I thought he was so great and cute.....tihi....

Misused potential.

This show when it first aired on NBC had tons of potential but as soon as the Dolphin opened it's mouth and started jabbering I knew that it's life would be short lived. Roy Scheider cast as the captain of the vessel kept the show afloat or maybe buoyant is a better term. Stephanie Beacham was also good in a supporting role, but then after Scheider left the show it simply sank. It's found a home on the SciFi channel. The concept was there but the writing of each episode wasn't.
Some of the best science fiction of the 90's.

I personally am very fond of the first season of this series. The first few plots were, of course, a little unstable, but the acting was memorable and the premise was interesting.
What I most liked about the show, in truth, was its solid scientific backing. Many sci-fi shows require, at least, a stretching of science -- which is of course excusable, because, after all, suspension of disbelief is the cornerstone of fiction. But SeaQuest was a science fiction show that was very much down to Earth. The technology it sported was recognizable, without losing the futuristic element. But at the same time it was able to come up with solid plots.
Again, I am only talking about the first season. As has been noted on this page by at least one other viewer, after the first season everything simply went downhill, cultimating in the horrible spinoff series SeaQuest 2032. The only memorable character after that point was the genetically engineered janitor -- the only good moments of the second season have to do with him.
