With the start of the new year, we can look forward to the start of a new cinematic universe based on DC characters – Dcu. And while Dceu ended its run with a somewhat successful ‘Aquman and the Lost Kingdom, ‘ the fact still remains that the majority of the movies have flopped. This is why Gunn and Safran were called in to take over the reins of the newly rebooted Dcu, and they have plenty of projects on their release calendar, but none is as talked about as ‘Superman,’ a true beginning of Dcu despite the fact that ‘Creature commandos’ are releasing first.
Now after months of speculation and planning, Gunn was overjoyed to announce that ‘Superman’ has begun principal photography on February 29th which is, coincidentally, Superman’s birthday. Gunn was also asked on the same thread regarding the inspiration for Superman’s suit which we’ve gotten a sneak...

Editor’s note: One in a series of stories tied to the 20th anniversary of 9/11.
Howard Gordon was executive producer/showrunner of Fox’s 24, which won Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series in 2006. He was on 24 for its entire 2001-2010 run and went on to co-create and executive produce Showtime’s Homeland. In a conversation with Deadline, Gordon reflects on 24, which “came of age in the immediate aftermath of 9/11,” its unexpected role as an outlet for the country’s collective anger following the attacks and as wish-fulfillment, featuring a hero who “does whatever he needs to do to get the job,” as well as the show’s complicated history on the subjects of torture and Muslim portrayal, which America grappled with in the years after 9/11. He also provides an update on a possible 24 revival and reflects on the events in Afghanistan through the prism of Homeland.

The film is a Belgian-Italian-Dutch-Bulgarian-Armenian co-production.
US actor Geraldine Chaplin and the Netherlands’ Jonas Smulders have joined the cast of US-Belgian filmmaker Jessica Woodworth’s drama Fortress.

"This is their story." ScreenDaily has released an early festival promo trailer for a film premiering at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival in the Director' Fortnight sidebar section. This Iraq-Italy-Kuwait co-production is a film about an Iraqi refugee chased through the wilderness by "migrant hunters" on a border in Europe. Adam Ali stars as Kamal, a migrant trying to get to Europe. At the border between Turkey and Bulgaria, local mercenaries are ruthlessly hunting down migrants. Alone in the forest, Kamal has three days to escape. The cast includes Svetlana Yantcheva, Pietro Ciciriello, Gassid Mohammed, Mohamed Zouaoui, and Erfan Rashid. My first impression is that this looks like that jaw-dropping Holocaust film Son of Saul, but for refugees trying to make it safely into Europe. I definitely need to watch this - it looks intense as hell. Here's the first promo trailer for Haider Rashid's Europa, direct from YouTube (via...

This Supergirl review contains spoilers for Season 5, Episode 18.
Knowing that this season came to an end three episodes before it was meant to, it’s honestly so difficult to judge the final episodes of Supergirl Season 5. Presumably, any resolutions we see in next week’s makeshift finale will, of necessity, not be terribly satisfying. There are plenty of overarching problems in Season 5 that are worth discussing: the fact that the Leviathan story has been a dud from jump, that the show let Lex Luthor take over a story that should have focused on Lena, and the season’s general abandonment of the “dangers of technology” theme it initially promised to tackle this season.
It’s a macro problem that’s apparent in this week’s episode as well, as “The Missing Link” is a largely workmanlike hour that seems more concerned with moving pieces into place for what’s still...

One of the ideas that sadly never came to pass for The CW’s “Crisis on Infinite Earths” involved Nicolas Cage appearing as Superman. Executive producer Marc Guggenheim even approached Cage, a lifelong Man of Steel fan, to show up in the special as his character from the canceled Tim Burton movie Superman Lives. Like a planned cameo from Michael Keaton as Batman though, this idea didn’t pan out, but that hasn’t stopped a fan from imagining what Cage’s Kal-El might have looked like.
As shown in the below image by Instagram user britedit, a current-era Cage is seen as Superman in a costume that partly references the screen test of the actor from the 1990s. The hero appears to be in the Fortress of Solitude as well, with what may be the younger version of the same character in the background. It’s not the best piece of fan art ever,...

What is more comforting for a man who is grieving: a world of puppets or immersing one’s self in the seemingly simpler time of the 1960s? For Jeff Piccirillo aka Mr. Pickles (Jim Carrey) of “Kidding,” it seems to be the latter.
The second season of Dave Holstein’s Showtime comedy has expanded its worlds-within-the-world outward from “Puppet Time,” Jeff’s children’s television show, to also include a “nostalgia center,” which Jeff visits to deal with another death.
“We kept thinking, ‘Emotionally, where would Jeff want to go?’” says Holstein. “We thought about Superman’s Fortress of Solitude — the one place Superman could go where he’s not Superman. And we thought, ‘What is the place where Jeff goes where he can escape himself?’”
The concept was inspired by a real-life Cleveland, Ohio facility that the writers’ room read about in the New Yorker — a space is rooted...

The artistic director reflects on this year’s festival.
Bero Beyer, the outgoing artistic director of International Film Festival Rotterdam (Iffr), says new talent should not try to compete with Disney if they are to be successful in the film industry. “You’re not going to beat Disney at their own game. So don’t even try.”
To foster this mindset, the theme of the final year of his five-year stint at the helm of the Rotterdam Film Festival was ‘New Talent.’ In March, Beyer will take over as CEO of the Netherlands Film Fund.

The first five directors talked with festival director Bero Beyer and programmer Muge Demir.
”They can cut the flowers, but spring will always come,” was the defiant response to increasing nationalism and reduced state funding, from a press conference with five directors participating in the Tiger Competition at International Film Festival Rotterdam (Iffr).
The directors were discussing a speech by then Brazilian culture minister Roberto Alvim last week, that borrowed heavily from one made in 1933 by Nazi minister of propaganda Joseph Goebbels, in which Alvim said Brazilian art must be “heroic and national… it will be deeply committed to the urgent aspirations of our people,...

We take a look at the movie sequels that attempted to up the ante by heading out of this world…
When it comes to the world of franchise moviemaking, space really is the final frontier. Boldly going where no previous entry has gone before represents an easy win for a studio looking to enliven a particular film property. The Fast and Furious franchise is the latest to be weighing up one giant leap for mankind with Chris Morgan, the writer of Hobbs & Shaw, open to taking Dominic Toretto et al into space.
"I would never shoot down space," Morgan told Entertainment Weekly. "Never, never. I would literally never shoot down anything, as long as it hits the parameters: 'Is it badass? is it awesome? Will the audience love it? And will it not break faith with the audience as they're watching it?' I'm down for whatever.

Supergirl delivers another emotional Lena/Kara moment, but fumbles everything else in an episode that makes Leviathan less scary.

This Supergirl review contains spoilers.
Supergirl Season 5 Episode 7
If you were hoping that Supergirl episode "Tremors" would involve Kara fighting off some giant, underground worms, then you would have been disappointed. Frankly, I think the story might have been better if it had gone in that direction. Up until this point, Leviathan has been a pretty intimidating villain—shadowy, omniscient, and very mysterious. But the more we learn about Leviathan, the less intimidating they become.
We learned a fair amount about Leviathan in tonight's episode. Sadly, the Older Woman (played wonderfully by Patti Allan) is not the head honcho of the organization. That honor seems to belong to Rama Khan and a Blonde Woman, who get an update on the Medaliian on Acrata (still in Lena's possession) from...

Iconic Chinese and Hollywood directors Frant Gwo and Roland Emmerich did not take the stage together at the Shanghai International Film Festival, but on Monday they got the chance to praise each other’s movies and share insights into sci-fi.
“I totally understand why it did well,” said “Independence Day” director Emmerich of Gwo’s recent “Wandering Earth,” a film which earned more than $680 million at the Chinese box office and has launched a wave of interest in Chinese sci-fi projects.
“It has lots of effects. It is good quality. And it is very Chinese, in that it is the story of a group of people, not just about a single person,” said Emmerich speaking at a panel discussion about sci-fi and technology.
Earlier, at a panel on industrializing the Chinese industry, Gwo thanked Chinese audiences for being tolerant of the “many things wrong” with “Wandering Earth. He said that...

Surrounded by an enormous wall, the nation has become entirely self-sufficient. Its inhabitants enjoy a life of well-being in safety, but when an outbreak of a fatal disease occurs, they find themselves trapped behind the very wall that was built to protect them.

When Athens, Georgia singer-guitarist Ross Shapiro passed away in 2016 at 53, indie-rock fans and peers mourned a uniquely talented artist who didn’t record much but really made it count when his did. As frontman for the Glands, Shapiro helmed two LPs, 1997’s promising Double Thriller and its fantastic 2000 follow-up The Glands – albums that kept coming at you with ebullient hooks, hot, hazy guitars and diagonal epiphanies like “I wanna live but not be found,” which Shapiro managed to render as if that line would have made perfect sense bouncing out...

2013′s Escape Plan was, despite the hype behind the double header of the appearance of Stallone and Schwarzenegger together, something of an underwhelming action flick. Whilst it was a solid movie it didn’t set the world alight and most people, other than genre fans that is, would be hard-pressed to remember the ins-and-outs of the futuristic prison film. But that didn’t stop Stallone from putting together plans for not one but Two sequels, this time teaming with man-mountain and comedy genius Dave Bautista and director Steven C. The “space / future prison” genre has a long and honourable history. Well, okay, neither of those things are true, but there are certainly plenty of them. From the classic “Escape From New York”, to 1990’s “Moon 44”, to “Alien 3”, both “Fortress” movies, 1997’s “Moonbase”, “Assault On Dome 4”, then getting further down the quality scale to “Starfire Mutiny” and “Total Reality” (there are plenty of others), audiences have been delighted by the implausibility of sending your worst criminals into space when it would be a great deal cheaper and easier to put them in a vault at the bottom of the ocean, or something, for 40 years.
The latest addition is “Incoming”, which first piqued my interest due to its casting of Scott Adkins. Adkins is B-movie royalty – you might recognise him from small roles in “Doctor Strange” and the second “Expendables”, but although his filmography sounds like...

Leading Norwegian company Maipo is developing “Fortress,” an ambitious dystopian thriller, and is preparing the second season of “State of Happiness” (“Lykkeland”), the historical series which is competing this week at Canneseries.
“Fortress” is created and penned by two high-profile Norwegian screenwriters: John Kåre Raake, whose track record includes Nordic blockbusters such as “The Wave,” Roar Uthaug’s disaster movie, and “Ragnarok, a family film based on Viking mythology;” and Linn-Jeanethe Kyed, who notably co-wrote “Børning” and “Børning 2,” a action-comedy movie franchise set in the world of illegal sports car racing, and Benjamin Ree’s critically acclaimed documentary feature about the Norwegian chess prodigy, Magnus Carlsen.
“Fortress” takes place in a near future in Norway which is now secluded from the rest of the world by a wall built by the nationalistic government. Norwegians live in absolute sovereignty, relying only on their own homegrown resources and caring solely about national affairs.

Marlen KhutsievI discovered the name Marlen Khutsiev two summers ago at the Locarno Film Festival, where Russian critic and programmer Boris Nelepo introduced an increasingly awestruck audience to the small but overwhelming filmography of this Russian filmmaker. Thankfully for American audiences, the Museum of Modern Art has picked up and continued this essential retrospective, which starts October 5 in New York, expanding it in the process, and so here I will gather my thoughts upon encountering this truly stunning work for the first time.My experience began incongruously with Khutsiev’s last completed feature, 1992's Infinitas, an unexpected choice considering that the film's 206 minute wanderings of a middle-aged man through his life and memories was even to this uninformed viewer clearly autobiographical. After next viewing Khutsiev's 1965 masterpiece variably known as Fortress Il'ichi, Ilych's Gate and I Am Twenty, it was clear that Infinitas is also a continuation or sequel to that semi-autobiographical film,...

My second day in Locarno I've shamefacedly dedicated to what some of the critics here call "the old movies." To be honest, while I am very much thrilled to be one of the first people to see new films by my favorite filmmakers as well as be surprised ones by those I don't know, almost every one of these films, most shot digitally and certainly projected digitally here in Locarno, I will be able to catch again somehow, whether in the "digital library" at the festival itself, through a link from a filmmaker/producer/publicist/friend, or at the next festival stop they make. The 35mm films in Locarno are obviously therefore a much more rarified commodity and experience, something David Bordwell testified to in his report from the nearly all film (and certainly all "old movies") festival in Bologna in June: namely, the increasing popularity of festivals which cater to these now-unique celluloid experiences,...

We may remember Independence Day, The Matrix, The Phantom Menace. But what about these forgotten 90s sci-fi films? And are any worth seeing?
Think back to the science fiction cinema of the 1990s, and some of the decade's biggest box-office hits will immediately spring to mind: The Phantom Menace, Jurassic Park, Independence Day, Men In Black, Armageddon and Terminator 2 were all in the top 20 most lucrative films of the era.
But what about the sci-fi films of the 1990s that failed to make even close to the same cultural and financial impact of those big hitters? These are the films this list is devoted to - the flops, the straight-to-video releases, the low-budget and critically-derided. We've picked 50 live-action films that fit these criteria, and dug them up to see whether they're still worth watching in the 21st century.

“Otis, plug it in!”
It’s been a tough week for horror fans. First Robert Z’Dar passed away, and now Tom Towles. The actor would have a cult following if he had co-starred in nothing else but Henry Portrait Of A Serial Killer in 1986. His Otis was based on Ottis Toole, the vile drifter who, along with Henry Lee Lucas (played in the film by Michael Rooker), left a trail of bodies in their wake. Towles was scary-good as Otis, and went on to co=star in a number of cult horror films including Tom Savini’s Night Of The Living Dead remake, The Borrower, and Fortress. Towles became a regular for director Rob Zombie with roles in House Of 1000 Corpses, The Devil’S Rejects, and Halloween. He had not appeared in a film since 2008, but had become a staple on the horror movie convention circuit. He died...

Throwback
Stars: Shawn Brack, Anthony Ring, Melanie Serafin, Vernon Wells, Warren Clements, Andy Bramble | Written and Directed by Travis Bain
There’s seems to be a renaissance in Ozploitation for the bigfoot movie (more commonly known as the Yowie down under), a genre which had, until very recently, died a slow an painful death, becoming as extinct as the very creatures themselves. Of course, if you’ve been reading our reviews here on Nerdly, you’ll know all about There’s Something in the Pilliga – the brilliantly funny “drunk Aussie’s versus Yowie” flick that played last Novembers MonsterFest. Well now we have another example of the genre with Throwback.
The film sees two pest exterminators head into the bush to search for the legendary lost treasure of the bushranger, Thunderclap Newman . The pair find their bounty but what they didn’t count on was an encounter with Australia’s mythical Yowie,...

There’s seems to be a renaissance in Ozploitation for the bigfoot movie (more commonly known as the Yowie down under), a genre which had, until very recently, died a slow an painful death, becoming as extinct as the very creatures themselves. Hold onto your butts, ’cause this is an unexpected piece of casting information. Christopher Lambert, star of the most important ’80s genre pic ever, Highlander, has joined the cast of The Coen Brothers’ next comedy, Hail, Caesar!
The sibling duo’s upcoming chucklefest is based in the backlots and studios of Hollywood’s Golden Age, and follows the story of a ‘fixer’ named Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin). The title has nothing whatsoever to do with veterinary medicine. In 1950s Hollywood, this was the term applied to the dogsbodies who were given the boring lackey jobs on sets. When a famous starlet goes missing, it’s up to Mannix to track her down. It’s a brilliant premise that ought to be the perfect vessel for the Coens’ typically zany commentary on society.
As production began on the shoot earlier this month, the casting roster has plumped up further with today’s left field announcement.

With the classic Re-Animator getting its Blu-ray reissue this week, we talk to its director about this and his other genre films...
Interview
Re-Animator landed like a firecracker in the middle of 80s horror cinema. A wild, vibrant adaptation of the Hp Lovecraft tale, Herbert West-Reanimator, it was both extremely funny and remarkably close to the writer’s source text. Jeffrey Combs plays the darting-eyed Herbert West, a gifted yet utterly mad young medical student who invents a serum which brings the dead back to kicking, screaming life.
A sprightly Bruce Abbott and Barbara Crampton play his fellow students, who can only watch in horror as their Miskatonic University campus fills up with angry revenant corpses from the morgue, while David Gale is brilliantly glowering as Dr Hill, West’s nemesis.
With glowing reviews from mainstream critics, Re-Animator quickly became a cult favourite, establishing Stuart Gordon’s reputation as a talented genre director.

Australia... it's a vast, beautiful, welcoming country. It's also full to bursting with things that can kill you, if the big screen is to be believed. Inspired by Mia Wasikowska's plucky 1,700-mile trek across the Outback in Tracks, we flag up the traps and tropes she should watch out for.
(Un)Natural Phenomena
Exotic wildlife proliferates Down Under, most of it deceptively lethal. Witness the baby stolen by a dingo in horrifying Meryl Streep-starrer A Cry In The Dark (1988). The same – real – tragedy loosely inspired Razorback, a mullet-tastic 1984 horror about a giant marauding pig, directed by Highlander's Russell Mulcahy (mooted tagline: 'There Can Only Be Oink'). The less said about the ballet-dancing were-roos of The Marsupials: The Howling III (1987), the better.
Much more convincing is the giant CG crocodile munching Radha Mitchell's boat tour group (ex-Neighbours actors constitute an Outback peril all of their own) in 2007's Rogue,...

Here are 25 more great, unsung films - this time, from the year 1994...
Yes, 1994. The year cinemas were dominated by such whimsical wonders as The Lion King, Forrest Gump, The Mask and, erm, True Lies. It was also the year Gump dominated the Academy Awards, and Four Weddings And A Funeral loomed large at the Baftas.
As ever, there was so much more to the year's cinematic landscape than Tom Hanks' park bench ramblings or Hugh Grant mithering from beneath his gorgously crafted hair. To prove it, here's a list of 25 films that, in our estimation, are among its most underappreciated. There's much horror, drama, tears and laughter, plus a couple of classic documentaries, too.
25. Phantasm III: Lord Of The Dead
The Phantasm series was quite unusual, in that writer and director Don Coscarelli made all four of them. This means that,...
