The Redford Center has announced its inaugural round of grants for six indie documentaries, all focused on “pushing the boundaries of environmental filmmaking.” In addition, the official Selection Committee has also singled out 7 honorees from a robust bunch of applicants that included 282 applications received from 28 countries worldwide (of particular note: 67% of the Grantees are female filmmakers).
“We have been humbled by the global response to our first-ever call to support films with innovative approaches to the challenges of environmental storytelling,” said Jamie Redford, Chair and Co-Founder of The Redford Center, of the announcement and their brand new honorees. “We said we were seeking the weird and the wild, and we got it. The range of creative and intelligent filmmakers working in this space only makes us more determined than ever to support and mentor more of their work in the future. It’s incredibly exciting.”

Was it love at first bite for Halle Berry? In this sneak preview at Dark Tide, the deep-water-and-even-deeper-emotions drama that brought the Oscar winner and real-life beau Olivier Martinez together, troubled boat captain Kate (Berry) lashes out at her ex, Jeff (Martinez), when he presses her to get right back in the saddle following the death of her mentor. Only, in this case, the saddle is the ocean, where Kate used to get up close and personal with great white sharks. "First of all, I'm not a dog, I'm a man," Jeff protests in the face of Kate's screaming. "Second of all, it's your boat, we do what you want. You want to go? Let's go." So, Kate instructs her...

Horror fans will no doubt recognize the name of director John Stockwell from his most famous turn in 1983′s Christine, in which he played good guy Dennis. In the intervening years, Stockwell has done all right for himself behind the camera, helming Crazy/Beautiful in 2001, Blue Crush in 2002, and Turiastas in 2006, and while he may be most remembered for facing down a menacing growling Plymouth Fury, in Dark Tide, coming out later this year from Lionsgate, he is taking on evil of the aquatic kind.
Dark Tide stars Halle Berry, Oliver Martinez, Ralph Brown, Luke Tyler, Mark Elderkin, and Thoko Ntshinga. The story is from Ronnie Christensen and Amy Sorlie.

The 45-year-old actress - who was previously married to baseball player David Justice for four years until 1997 and tied the knot with Eric Benet in 2001 before separating two years later - is set to tie the knot with her 'Dark Tide' co-star after the 46-year-old Frenchman proposed with an emerald-and-diamond ring.
A source told the new issue of Us Weekly magazine: "Halle had given up on being married, but she trusts Olivier. He makes her feel safe. He's a keeper!"
The actress agreed to marry Olivier - who she has been dating since autumn 2010 - because she was impressed with how he treats Nahla, her three-year-old daughter with former boyfriend Gabriel Aubry.
A source said: "Halle is very serious about this marriage. She's ready. Olivier has become her rock.
"Halle feels Olivier has made a connection and a commitment to her and her daughter."

The re-emergence of marine based b-movies over this past year has been borderline ridiculous. Couple this with the fact that sharks, in particular, seem to be showing up in mainstream cinema as well it feels like a month doesn't pass without the announcement, arrival or abject disappointment of a shark-related horror flick. Forgetting the likes of 'Shark Night 3D', 'Swamp Shark', 'Bait', 'Dark Tide', 'Sand Sharks' and '2 Headed Shark Attack' production company Tom Cat Films' contribution to the ever growing sub-genre comes in the form of low-budget horror flick 'Jurassic Shark'. Helmed by Brett Kelly ('Kingdom of the Vampire') and penned by David A. Lloyd ('Bikini Girls from the Lost Planet', 'Ghost in a Teeny Bikini') the movie has just gained itself a new trailer. Emanuelle Carriere, Christine Emes, Celine Filion, Angela Parent, Duncan Milloy and Kevin Preece star. Check out the new trailer below.

Last we heard, Paul Schrader ought to have been in post-production on The Jesuit right about now. The action thriller seems to have stalled, however, so Schrader has secured himself a new gig directing Brett Easton Ellis' Bait. He's replacing the previously-announced Jonas Pate (Caprica) behind the camera. This one is not to be confused with Bait 3D which Russell "Highlander" Mulcahy wrote and is currently finishing up in Australia. It's going to be hard not to mix them up though, given that they both involve sharks, joining an already crowded school that also includes imminent releases for Shark Night and Dark Tide. You might wonder why long-time Scorsese collaborator Schrader, most recently behind The Walker and Adam Resurrected, would be interested in Bait at all, but we're guessing Ellis is the reason. The American Psycho writer's original script seems to hit on his usual preoccupations, involving a sociopathic waiter...

This is one of the only shark movies (see the Bait movie trailer) that seems to try and the approach the genre differently. The sharks aren’t coming to people to kill and destroy, the people are invading their territory for study and recreation.
