The entire media landscape feels like it has been in turmoil for the last few years as streaming, the pandemic, uncertainty at the box office, and the decline of traditional TV have all forced seemingly constant change in Hollywood. It has felt, at times, like the studios are trying to blindly shoot at a target that is moving unpredictably. What remains certain is that change is coming and coming fast. One thing that most people seem to agree on is that in order to survive, many of these big companies will need to consolidate in order to stay competitive. Well, it seems like another mammoth merger may be on the horizon and, once again, Warner Bros. will be at the center of it.
We should carefully note that nothing is certain right now and much of what is about to be discussed is hearsay for the time being. But it's...

When it comes to predicting the Oscar winner for Best Film Editing, you can’t go wrong by looking for the movie with the most cuts. Past winners “The Bourne Ultimatum” (2008), “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2016), “Ford v Ferrari” (2020), “Dune” (2022) and last year’s champ “Everything Everywhere All at Once” included high-octane action sequences with frenetic cutting. A slew of winners — including “Saving Private Ryan” in 1999, “Black Hawk Down” (2002), “The Hurt Locker” (2010), “Hacksaw Ridge” (2017) and “Dunkirk” (2018) — have been war pictures. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2024 Oscar predictions for Best Film Editing.)
Oscar voters also embrace film editors who skillfully juggle multiple storylines, as was the case with “Traffic” (2001) and “Crash” (2006). And they like films that expertly inter-cut music with images, such as “Cabaret” (1973), “Chicago” (2003), “Whiplash” (2015), “Bohemian Rhapsody” (2019) and 2021 winner “Sound of Metal.” Special effects extravaganzas like “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004) and “Gravity” (2014) won by...

Portland, Or – Comics and graphic novel publisher Ablaze notably expands its webtoon manhwa catalog with The Awl, a moving and socially conscious series about the struggles of workers at an oppressive Korean big box superstore as they strive for better lives and working conditions. The work is by creator Choi Gyu-Seok, who was also the artist of The Hellbound, a manhwa series adapted into a live action show and streaming on Netflix now.
The Awl is critically acclaimed and the recipient of the Korean Cartoon of Today Prize and caused a stir by raising public awareness about acute labor problems when it was originally published. It was also adapted to a successful TV series in South Korea by the Jtbc network. Ablaze will launch the 6-volume series in print with the debut of Volume 1 this December.

You didn't think we were done with fresh tidbits and new reveals coming out of "Mission: Impossible -- Dead Reckoning" just because the film is wrapping up its theatrical run and headed towards its home release, did you? I mean, as Ethan Hunt once memorably stated early on in "Fallout," "What's done is done when we say it's done." That's never felt more true than with the recently-released Empire podcast spoiler special dedicated to all things "Dead Reckoning."
This podcast has already uncovered a host of juicy details, as a result of Empire host Chris Hewitt's marathon-like interview with director Chris McQuarrie. Last time, we heard more insights into plans for a de-aging sequence that originally was meant to open the film in style, but fans have been anxiously awaiting the next installment of the series as the conversation's been split up over multiple parts and slowly parceled out...

Going into filming the action fantasia that is "John Wick: Chapter 4", franchise director Chad Stahelski had some big challenges to overcome. How the hell do you shoot a fight scene at the Arc de Triomphe at the height of rush hour? How do you shoot a video-game-inspired top-down sequence that requires John Wick to unleash a firestorm of incendiary "dragon's breath" ammo and looks like it was shot in one long take? And perhaps most challenging of all, how do you top three previous films which elevated action to an art form, influencing a whole era of similar films as a result?
Stahelski was used to tackling such issues. Back when "John Wick" was yet to make its 2014 debut, he and co-director David Leitch were basically making what was supposed to be a meager B-movie style project with a star whose then most recent movie — "47 Ronin" — was a bonafide box office bomb.

Director Neill Blomkamp burst onto the scene all the way back in 2009 with "District 9." 14 years later, it remains one of the most beloved feature directorial debuts in recent memory — if not ever. The problem for Blomkamp is that he's yet to have an unqualified hit ever since his first film became a smash, taking in $210 million worldwide against a $30 million budget, en route to a Best Picture Oscar nomination. But Blomkamp is getting another shot at the big time with his latest film, "Gran Turismo." Part video game adaptation, part biopic, the filmmaker is looking to break his mixed bag of a streak. Can this be the movie to get the job done?
Box Office Pro currently has "Gran Turismo" taking in anywhere between $17 and $22 million on its opening weekend domestically. The movie was initially supposed to come out much earlier in August but was pushed back a couple...

In many respects, the ‘80s are highlighted as a boom period for anime, something perhaps unwittingly foretold by Mobile Suit Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino in his famous “Anime New Century Declaration” — a promo event for the “Ms Gundam” compilation movie “Mobile Suit Gundam 1” that unexpectedly drew a crowd numbering in the thousands. The event was emblematic of that coming explosion — anime production reaching newfound scale, finding larger audiences in turn, and maturing as both a medium and an industry. It would be a decade that saw more confident spending, bigger original productions, and a much deeper roster as new creators.
In a retrospective piece about the moment, “Anime: A History” author Jonathan Clements wrote that while Tomino would become a figurehead, his “new world order” would belong to the next generation. It would be a dynamic new age defined by works like the famous Daicon III & IV Opening Animations, made...

The "Mission: Impossible" series is known for its death-defying stunts. In "Mission: Impossible -- Fallout," Tom Cruise does a Halo (High Altitude Low Open) jump — a military technique in which a skydiver jumps from an incredibly high altitude and deploys their parachute at the last minute from a very low altitude.
Tom Cruise, director Christopher McQuarrie, and the filmmaking team had to practice the jump 106 times to perfectly synchronize the physical and visual choreography. "It was so important for me to get it right because I want to put the audience right there in that moment, feeling this sense of danger as Ethan has to improvise when everything goes wrong," Cruise told Yahoo!. McQuarrie expanded on that idea in an interview with /Film:
"How do we make it subjective? How do we put the audience with Ethan? I'd seen plenty of people jump out of planes, but always with the camera on their backs.

On March 24, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the premiere of The Godfather. It was nominated for 11 Oscars, won three, and changed cinema forever. The film, which never uses the word “mafia” or the phrase “cosa nostra,” is renowned as the premiere gangster film of all time, and is more than occasionally called the greatest movie of all time. Yet its follow-up, The Godfather, Part II, is often ranked higher. This has more to do with filmmaking than with crime.
Paramount Pictures released a 4K Ultra HD edition of The Godfather Trilogy on March 22. The scope of the Corleone family saga is the story of 20th Century America. Over the course of the three films, Francis Ford Coppola delivers a multigenerational tale of corruption, vengeance, and family duty. The Godfather elevated mob movies to high art, paving the way for the street-level gangsters of Martin Scorsese’s Mean Streets and Goodfellas,...

Last Updated March 10: “Cruella” and “Dune” received Oscar momentum as the period and sci-fi film winners March 9 at the 24th Costume Designer Guild Awards. This clearly puts “Cruella’s” two-time Oscar winner Jenny Beaven in the driver’s seat against “Dune’s” Jacqueline West and Robert Morgan, and “West Side Story’s” Paul Tazewell.

Even though “Game of Thrones” fans are in for a very long hiatus before its final season, “The Simpsons” filled the void by paying homage to HBO’s fantasy epic on Sunday night. The animated series’ Season 29 premiere is set in an alternate world called “The Serfsons,” in which fantasy references abound from popular TV shows, movies, novels, video games, and RPGs.
First, it’s important to make the distinction between any general Medieval or fantasy reference and an actual homage to actual properties like “Lord of the Rings” or “Game of Thrones.” Even though J.R.R. Tolkien is accepted as the father of modern fantasy (high fantasy specifically), he did not invent the genre, and therefore many hallmarks of the genre – such as flying fire-breathing dragons – seen in the episode are not credited to any particular source.

Elizabeth Debicki’s rise toward Hollywood’s big leagues continues unabated.
The Aussie actress, who first appeared in The Great Gatsby four years ago, brought a ferocious sense of intensity to the role of Ayesha, Golden High Priestess of the Sovereign, in last month’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – with an added touch of humor, of course – and will soon be seen among Steve McQueen’s ensemble cast for Widows, along with the Cloverfield anthology film formerly known as God Particle. Look for that one to arrive in October.
But it seems Debicki still has room on the stacked schedule for another project: Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. The wildly ambitious space opera from EuropaCorp and Lucy director Luc Besson is gestating in post-production, and Variety now reports that Elizabeth Debicki has signed on for a last-minute voice role. Further details regarding her character weren’t disclosed,...

Coming out the Cannes Film Festival, here’s a first look at director Claire McCarthy’s Ophelia.
Currently in production in Prague, the cast includes Daisy Ridley (upcoming Murder on the Orient Express, Star Wars: The Last Jedi), Two-time Academy Award nominee Naomi Watts (Divergent series, The Impossible), Golden Globe winning and Academy Award nominee Clive Owen (Closer, Children of Men, upcoming Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets), George MacKay (Captain Fantastic, Pride), Devon Terrell (Barry) and Tom Felton (Harry Potter series).
Set in the 14th Century but spoken in a contemporary voice, Ophelia is a dynamic re-imagining of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Written by Semi Chellas, Ophelia is adapted from the book by Lisa Klein.
Ophelia (Ridley) takes center stage as the Queen’s (Watts) most trusted lady-in-waiting. Beautiful and intelligent, she soon captures the attention of the handsome Prince Hamlet and a forbidden love blossoms.

Damien Chazelle's "La La Land" made history at the 74th Annual Golden Globes winning all 7 nominations including Best Picture Musical/Comedy! The film won Best Actor (Ryan Gosling), Actress (Emma Stone), Director, Screenplay, Score, and Song! Previously, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" was the record-holder for winning 6/6 and both "Doctor Zhivago" and "A Star is Born" 5 for 5.
A big congrats to Chazelle and "La La Land!"
The biggest upset for me? Natalie Portman's "Jackie" performance was overshadowed by Isabelle Huppert in "Elle." I thought Portman, wigs and make-up included, embodied the role of our former First Lady!
In the TV category, "The Night Manager" was the big winner taking home three awards (mostly for performance for Tom Hiddleston, Olivia Colman, and Hugh Laurie), followed by "The People v O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story" and "The Crown" each with two.

If the Oscars are the biggest night for movies and the Emmys for TV, then the Golden Globes are like their showy, drunken child, with the biggest stars from the small and big screens gathering this Sunday to toast each other and hand out some awards.
Since the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, who puts on the bash, loves a star sighting as much as they do quality film and TV, it's also one of the more unpredictable awards shows of the season. Below, we offer our best guesses on who will take home the top honors, as well as who actually deserved the Globe.

Lionsgate’s musical took the best musical or comedy award at the 74th awards show on Sunday night.
Moments earlier, Emma Stone, who kicked off awards season with the Coppa Volpi win in Venice last autumn, had been named best actress in a musical or comedy for her role in the film. Stone dedicated her win to aspiring actors around the world.
La La Land converted all seven of its nominations on the night. Shortly before Stone’s award, writer-director Damien Chazelle picked up the screenplay prize following his earlier win for best director.
Collecting the directing prize earlier in the night, Chazelle thanked his producers “for not blanching at what must have seemed like an utterly insane proposition.”

“And now one for all the nostalgics out there. A blast from the past… that beautiful time when people refused to accept that the future was just around the corner.”
Alfonso Cuarón’s “Children of Men” arrived in theaters on Christmas Day, 2006, and immediately announced itself as the best and bleakest sci-fi movie of the 21st Century. It has also proven to be the most prescient, anticipating a time when Britain has closed its borders, hateful isolationism has taken root, and xenophobia spores out of walled garden across the world. If once this story provided a window into a dark possibility, recent events have warped it into a funhouse mirror that reflects our new reality. “Children of Men” may be set in 2027, but when Donald J. Trump was elected President of the United States, it suddenly became clear that its time had come.

In 1813, renowned writer Jane Austen published a book called Pride and Prejudice, which tells the story of the Bennet sisters, who are gussied up and married off to wealthy suitors, one by one. The only sister who seems to question this system is Elizabeth, the rebellious member of the family, who feels strong disdain for the system that treats her more like property than a proper citizen. In 2009, author Seth Grahame-Smith put a new twist on the old tale by creating a parody novel called Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which loosely follows the same basic outline, but adds an entirely different obstacle to the tale: the living dead.
In Grahame-Smith’s story, the girls are not only fighting for the right to be married into regal families, but also battling for their lives on a daily basis. An outbreak has occurred within these humble streets, and now flesh-eating zombies...

Warner Bros. Pictures have announced the award winning and much loved historical epic Michael Collins will be back in Irish cinemas for a limited period in a new digital format from March 18th. The film will be screened in 60 cinemas across Ireland. Michael Collins tells the powerful, turbulent story of one of Ireland's most controversial patriots and revolutionary heroes, known as ‘The Lion Of Ireland’, who leads his countrymen in their fight for independence. Set in the early 20th Century, when a monumental history of oppression and bloodshed had divided Ireland and its people, the film covers the bloody 1916 Easter Uprising, when Irish revolutionaries surrendered to the overwhelming military power of the British forces and Collins was arrested. Upon his release, he takes leadership of the Irish independence movement and strives to create a free and peaceful country.

To this day I am still surprised how mainstream zombies have become. Currently there are four television shows and more movies churned out in the last decade than any one person could ever hope to watch. With more titles than a herd of Walkers, filmmakers need to insure their title can stand out from the pack. Along shambles Pride and Prejudice and Zombies hoping to bite a piece out of the box office. But is it memorable?
A mysterious plague has ravaged 19th Century England. Mr. Bennett (Charles Dance) has been training his five daughters their whole life for combat. But Mrs. Bennett (Sally Phillips) is worried about her daughter’s future and wants to marry them all off to wealthy suitors. Daughter Elizabeth (Lily James) lays eyes on Mr. Darcy (Sam Riley) at a party and seems quite taken with him. Of course it can’t be that easy...

While we’re used to the very proper nature of films set in the world of Jane Austen’s literary canon, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is about to spin those conventions on their head.
Lily James, who last starred in the remarkable live-action adaptation of Cinderella, plays Elizabeth Bennett, a fierce woman who is not just facing relationship troubles, but also a zombie apocalypse. She’s about to change the face of the prim and dainty 19th Century woman, with the help of co-stars Lena Headey and Suki Waterhouse.
In three new clips from the film, we can already feel the prowess of Elizabeth Bennett. She is fierce, bold and speaks her mind. She also makes for an unlikely hero to battle the undead, but that’s what makes her the perfect role model. Featuring women who can ward off zombies while wearing a corset, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies...

A new series of character posters has been released today by Lionsgate UK, focusing on the heroes of the upcoming romance action flick Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Based on the best-selling parody novel of the same name, the movie follows the story of the Bennett sisters, Elizabeth (Lily James), Lydia (Ellie Bamber), Mary (Millie Brady), Jane (Bella Heathcote), and Kitty (Suki Waterhouse), who must all come of age during the incoming zombie apocalypse set against the backdrop of 19th Century England.
Originally released in 2009, the novel takes the original structure of Jane Austen’s classic story and infuses it with a bit of bloody mayhem as all of her well-known characters must learn how to deal with zombies in addition to all of the issues of manners and societal strife that Austen’s book is known for. Pride and Prejudice and Zombie‘s author, Seth Grahame-Smith, also wrote Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter,...

The internet and streaming technologies have given big Hollywood new competition in films produced independently and by non-traditional means. We went from purchasing films on yards of tape to plastic disks, and now we can simply upload them to the cloud. Advertisements for films have reached a higher, more ruthless level where generating hype through trailers and teasers is crucial for a film’s commercial success.
