The Most Underrated Movie of All Time According to Tom Cruise; Val Kilmer Was in This 1993 Classic
Image
Hollywood is filled with underrated gems that only get better with time, and Val Kilmer’s 1993 Western, Tombstone, is one of them. It’s gritty, highly quotable, and somehow still manages to fly under the radar when people talk about great Westerns, despite the positive reviews. Directed by George P. Cosmatos, Tombstone is the kind of film that deserves every bit of praise it gets, and Tom Cruise seems to agree.

A full-blown cinematic phenomenon in himself, it is safe to say that Tom Cruise knows a thing or two about deserving films. After all, the man who gave us characters like Maverick and Jerry Maguire is someone whose opinion we hold in high regard. Here’s what he has said about Tombstone.

Recent Update Points To Major Half-Life 2 Overhaul That Could Make It Worth Revisiting
Image
Half-Life 2's impact on gaming cannot be overstated, setting a new standard for modern games with its revolutionary physics technology. Valve's recent "test" branch update for Half-Life 2 hints at a possible celebration for the game's upcoming 20th Anniversary. Despite the ongoing rumors and speculation, the elusive Half-Life 3 remains a distant dream for fans as they eagerly anticipate its potential release.

Valve may be gearing up to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Half-Life 2 if a recent update is to be believed. Half-Life 2's impact on the industry can't be understated as the game's use of physics was so ahead of anything else at the time that it largely set the standard for most modern games, making the technology a staple of video game design. While the elusive third installment is still nowhere in sight, fans of the franchise may soon have a good reason to return to the sequel that changed everything.

Valve's recent game releases suggest a return to game development, sparking hope for Half-Life 3's eventual release.

Half-Life 3, the never-made game that can't be forgotten, is back on everyone's radar after a leak suggested that Valve is officially developing the project. Having become one of the longest-running memes on the internet, the Half-Life fandom is unable to shake rumors that Gordon Freeman and his crowbar are on the verge of a major comeback given that whisperings of a third installment have swirled since the release of Half-Life 2: Episode 2 in 2007. There's still little in the way of confirmation, but the most recent leak is the closest thing to an official update in some years.

Samuel L. Jackson Candidly Reflects On His Falling Out With Spike Lee After 4-Movie Streak
Image
Samuel L. Jackson and Spike Lee had a falling out over a salary dispute during the production of Malcolm X. "Scale-plus-10" refers to the minimum salary set by the Screen Actors Guild, which Jackson felt was not adequate compensation. The feud between Jackson and Lee represented a major rift in their relationship and careers, as they were both emerging talents at the time.

Actor Samuel L. Jackson reflects on his falling out with indie director Spike Lee. Jackson first appeared in Lee’s 1988 film School Daze. He went on to film three more Lee movies back-to-back: Do the Right Thing, ‘Mo Better Blues, and Jungle Fever. Jackson and Lee then had a notable falling out, and did not work together again until Lee’s 2013 film Oldboy.

Speaking candidly with Vulture prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike, Jackson reveals the reason behind his falling out with Lee. When asked what caused the rift,...

Samuel L. Jackson reveals how ‘Malcolm X’ caused falling out with Spike Lee
Image
When Spike Lee won his long overdue first competitive Oscar at the 2019 Academy Awards, he literally jumped into presenter Samuel L. Jackson’s arms for a hug. But there was a moment when the longtime friends probably couldn’t have imagined they’d share such a public embrace.

In a new interview with Vulture, Jackson – who appeared in early Lee films like “School Daze,” “Do the Right Thing,” “Mo Better Blues,” and “Jungle Fever” – explained he had a falling out with the filmmaker over “Malcolm X.”

“I actually read with most of the people who auditioned for ‘Malcolm X.’ I was supposed to be the guy that turned Malcolm X on to Islam in prison. I forget who played that role,” Jackson revealed. Albert Hall played the role of Baines in the film and turned in an indelible performance in the part. He later appeared in Lee’s film “Get on the Bus.

Samuel L. Jackson Details Spike Lee Feud Over ‘Malcolm X’ Casting
Image
Samuel L. Jackson is detailing his 1992 falling out with Spike Lee that took more 20 years to rebuild.

Jackson, in a wide-ranging interview with Vulture, shared that the creative split from Lee was due to a “Malcolm X” salary dispute which ultimately led Jackson to turn down the role of Baines in the historical epic. Albert Hall was cast instead.

“I actually read with most of the people who auditioned for ‘Malcolm X,'” Jackson said, after starring in Lee’s “Jungle Fever,” “School Daze,” and “Do the Right Thing” prior. “I was supposed to be the guy that turned Malcolm X on to Islam in prison. I forget who played that role. But it was still down to that Spike Lee scale-plus-10 salary thing. I was like, ‘I’m not going to work for no scale-plus-10.'”

The “scale plus 10” salary refers to a pay rate for actors with a...

White Sands – Review
Image
Hvide Sande

White Sands is the name of a small Danish coastal town, thriving on fishing and tourism, that provides the setting for this eight-episode crime drama, featuring an attractive, mismatched pair of cops going undercover to solve the year-old murder of a German tourist. Marie Bach Hansen plays Helene, the Danish half of the team; her surly imported partner, Thomas, is played by Carsten Bjornlund.

Assigned to play a young married couple to endear themselves with the tight-lipped locals is especially difficult for both. Helene just finished a long deep undercover assignment in which she grew too emotionally attached to the thug she had to seduce. In the first scene, he’d bought her act so completely that he was starting to propose at a romantic dinner when she summoned the troops to bust him at the restaurant. Rejection to the max, leaving him lusting for payback, and her...

You can sympathise, really. The sun, bored of hanging around in space waiting for this series to start making sense, decided to leak itself to the public by turning up early, all massive, with a tail. The sun was here for answers. Answers it wasn’t going to get.

Answers to questions like: why did Hicks kill Alex Butler? Why did Renko protect her rapist? Why did 'they' lie to MI5 Grace about the apocalyptic timescale? A bit of cello practice, a watcher in the woods, a dusty room that’s been locked for years: there’s a lot of interesting events happening in this episode of Requiem. But before we get into that, let’s sing the praises of an element that can often get overlooked: an excellent title sequence.

The swirling, kaleidoscopic patterns and effects combined with high-pitched, eerie music reminds me of other series of the past that knew how to build up the suspense and fantastical elements from the start: Tales of the Unexpected, for instance, or The Box of Delights, both of...

The Punisher spoiler-free review
Mike Cecchini Nov 17, 2017

Marvel's The Punisher Netflix series is a surprisingly subdued, ambitious affair. Here's a spoiler-free review from our Us chums...

I have to confess, the first episode of Marvel’s The Punisher had me a little worried. After opening on Frank Castle in all his skull-clad glory, tying up loose ends in a sequence that fully embraces the bonkers, over-the-top, Ennis-esque violence that came to define the character in the 21st century, the next hour is a dour, obvious, overwritten affair, and for a moment I feared that the series would be a chore.

When Stranger Things returns to Netflix it'll be for fewer episodes than season 2 delivered...

Stranger Things season 3 was officially confirmed by Netflix late in 2017, and the news certainly didn't blow anyone’s minds, considering that the show has become a certified pop culture phenomenon that has elevated itself and the aggregate of the streaming giant’s original content lineup into the stratosphere.

"Twin Peaks," Episode 8 Recap: Did You Like That Song?
Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series."Did you like that song?" the boy (Xolo Mariduena) asks the girl (Tikaeni Faircrest). His words are hesitant and tentative—tinged with naiveté, therefore open and earnest. "Yes," the girl replies, playing along with the courtship ritual. "I did like that song." Yet there's a sense in the slight pause between his question and her answer that she could say anything. That awkward dead space is filled with possibilities—positive, negative and in-between. And what excitement there is in that. This exchange comes toward the end of Part 8 of Mark Frost and David Lynch's revived Twin Peaks, though the quiet beauty of the moment is offset by the many horrors (and wonders) that precede it…and that, will indeed, follow it. It's easy...

‘Twin Peaks’: Let’s Talk About the Birth of Bob, Laura Palmer, the Woodsmen and Whatever That Critter Is
I segreti di Twin Peaks (1990)
[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “Twin Peaks” Episode 8 titled “Part 8 – Gotta Light?”]

What was only hinted at in the third episode of “Twin Peaks” became a full-blown surrealistic experience in Sunday’s avant-garde “Part 8.”

Despite the experimental filmmaking and very little dialogue, the 50-minute bombardment of sound and fury coalesced into an intriguing origin story that promised a lot more sense in the contemporary story to come. Giving historical context to some of the things we’ve seen so far anchors the story in a way that it hasn’t been before. But this wasn’t just the story of one birth, but of many. Let’s break those and a few other theories down:

‘Twin Peaks’ Part 8 Was the Closest We’ll Come to Seeing David Lynch’s ‘Tree of Life’
I segreti di Twin Peaks (1990)
“Some people go nuts for ‘Tree of Life,’” David Lynch said during a Los Angeles Times interview five years ago. “I love Terry Malick. But ‘Tree of Life’ wasn’t my cup of tea.” After being asked a follow-up question about why he couldn’t get into the film, Lynch simply repeated himself: “It wasn’t my cup of tea.”

If you’ve ever wondered what the Lynchian equivalent of “The Tree of Life” would look like, last night’s entrancing episode of “Twin Peaks” offers a clue. It might have been the most visually stunning 60 minutes of television ever produced — and certainly the revival’s best episode since last month’s two-part premiere — and most who tuned in have no earthly idea what actually happened.

'Twin Peaks' Recap: Pretty Hate Machine
Laura Zerra in Nudi e crudi (2013)
Sometimes, after witnessing a work of art that truly challenges and moves us, it's easier to be flippant than philosophical. So let's get the flippancy out of our system right away. After all, following an hour of television like last night's episode of Twin Peaks, people are bound to have questions. "What did I just witness?", for example. Or "How did David Lynch and Mark Frost convince Showtime to put that on the air?" Or "Does Trent Reznor have any idea how cool he looks in a pair of sunglasses?...

‘Twin Peaks’ Review: Part 8 Aims for Maximum Weirdness and Succeeds
I segreti di Twin Peaks (1990)
Last Week’S Review: Part 7 Leaves More Clues Than We Can Count as David Lynch Digs Deep Into the Past

Were there more than 20 lines of dialogue spoken in tonight’s “Twin Peaks”? All signs point to no. In perhaps what was the most existential and absurd installment yet of the surreal drama’s return, David Lynch’s attention shifted from a bloody confrontation in the woods to a journey through time and space that barely touched on the modern day. Instead, “Part 8” tripped back to the past for a largely silent (dialogue-less) series of events (it feels a bit much to refer to them as “a story” at this stage) that of course did not skim on harsh violence and strange mannerisms.

Everyone is going to come to Part 8 with their own interpretations and theories; it’s an installment which seems to welcome that. And pieces of it are more successful than others.

Eva Longoria To Co-Produce Zone Of Silence Drama Series For NBC
Desperate Housewives alum Eva Longoria continues to build an impressive body of work as producer, with news that she will co-produce Zone of Silence, alongside actor Eric Winter (Witches Of East End), and Jason Blum – the producer behind the Paranormal Activity, Insidious and The Purge movie franchises, as well as the award-winning The Normal Heart. The drama – set for NBC – will focus on a geographical area known locally as the Mapimi Silent Zone in Mexico.

The desert area, located near the Bolson de Mapimi in Durango, includes part of the Mapimi Biosphere Reserve, and is home to a local myth about a land-locked Bermuda Triangle, of sorts. Legend has it that no type of communication – radio signal or otherwise – can penetrate the area, though many locals remain sceptical.

The modern version of the myth stems from an incident in 1970, during which the U.S military apparently launched an Athena test...

25 mainly forgotten Us number 1 movies from the 2000s
Kevin Spacey, Steven Seagal and, erm, Kangaroo Jack: they all nabbed the box office top spot last decade...

By the end of the 2000s, getting number one at the American box office was a valuable marketing commodity. As such, studios pumped more and more money into making sure they at least had a great opening weekend for their product.

The consequence of this was that it was harder and harder for smaller and quirkier films to take a brief spot in the sun. Certainly towards the second half of the decade, it seems that the number one movie each week was pre-ordinained in a marketing meeting somewhere.

Still, there were some films that have since fallen out of public view that clawed their way to number one. How many of these do you remember?

Eye Of The Beholder

January 2000, one week

Based on Marc Behm's book of the same name,...

Blue Box to sell ‘Stowaway’
The Red Granite International subsidiary has dropped a Marcus Nispel project into the Cannes market in the form of the maritime horror film.

Scott Sandler, Connor Colebrook and Juhani Nurmi wrote the screenplay to Stowaway from a story by Nispel (pictured) and Nurmi.

Los Angeles-based producers White Sands Pictures have earmarked an autumn start on the story of a woman who takes a yacht trip with her fiancé’s family, unaware of the clan’s secret that lies at the bottom of the ocean.

Stowaway is inspired by the Norse myth about an avenging seaborne humanoid creature and the production will benefit from the services of creature feature expert Mike Elizade of SpectralMotion.

Nispel, whose credits include Pathfinder, Conan The Barbarian and the upcoming Exeter, produces alongside Stefan Brunner. The executive producer is White Sands founder Juergen J Straub.

Christopher Nolan Rejected 'Man of Steel' End Credits Scene
Henry Cavill in L'uomo d'acciaio (2013)
When DC Comics announced their release slate through the year 2020 last month, it was clear that the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will be the launching pad for this massive comic book universe. As it turns out, Warner Bros. may have wanted last year's Man of Steel to truly set up this world, but producer Christopher Nolan shot down the notion.

A lengthy profile of Christopher Nolan in The Guardian offers an anecdote about how Zack Snyder first met Christopher Nolan, and how Warner Bros. asked the director to add a "comedy coda" to the end of Man of Steel. Here's an excerpt from the article.

"'The Batman movies - that take, that tone - came out of nowhere,' said director Zack Snyder, who first met Nolan on a Warner Bros plane heading to a film industry convention in Las Vegas and leapt at the chance to...

The Most Fun I've Ever Had with My Pants On and Mrs. Prindable's Caramels
Many films torture their characters (e.g. the Saw series; I Spit on Your Grave). Drew Denny, a truly beautiful woman who has written, helmed, and stars in this semi-lesbian road trip, has decided instead to scourge the audience with directorial incoherence, an abysmal screenplay, inane antics, and incessantly showing off her ultra-white teeth. At times, you’re not sure if you are watching an exploration of two women’s lives or the world’s longest Crest commercial.

The Most Fun I've Ever Had with My Pants On, an adaptation of Ms. Denny's 2011 performance piece, a heartfelt tribute to her late father, chronicles the journey of Andy (Denny), a randy, immature lesbian traveling about various scenic parts of America, including Yosemite; White Sands, New Mexico; and West Texas, to scatter her dad's ashes piecemeal. Accompanying her is her attractive, straight, childhood friend Liv (Sarah Hagan), an infantile actress with limited...

The Newsroom Review: “One Step Too Many” (Season 2, Episode 6)
The sixth episode of the second season of The Newsroom covers a lot of ground as we get to zero in on the crux of the season long arc, the airing of the News Night special that reveals that the United States military was guilty of war crimes when it turns out it actually wasn’t. Last week’s episode gave me hope that Aaron Sorkin was getting closer to working out the kinks – the whole Sloan sex scandal, which played to the writer’s baser, season one instincts, notwithstanding – and this week’s episode seemed to confirm that maybe The Newsroom was showing the promise we always wanted it to.

This week, we opened with the Red Team. Jerry Dantana was back, and along with Mackenzie, Maggie, Neal and Charlie, he gave Don, Sloan and Jim the rundown on the Genoa case so far. Despite five sources and photos...

Lustmord: ambient's dark star | Alex Needham
He's fascinated by the atom bomb and once played a gig for Satan. Is Australia ready for Lustmord?

When the Church of Satan wanted to celebrate their 40th anniversary – and 06/06/06 – with a ritual in Los Angeles, they called Lustmord. The pioneer of ultra-niche music genre "dark ambient" hadn't performed live since the early 80s, preferring to make his music in the studio, but thought the opportunity was too hilarious to turn down.

"Satanists from around the world were flying in for this private event," he says. "People have this image of me as dark so I thought I had to do the gig. It was Spinal Tap – too funny to say no." So he donned the black robes the church made for him (usually he plays in a T-shirt) and played his droning, alluring music while the Satanists got on with worshipping the devil.

So is he a Satanist? "I'm a hardcore atheist,...
