For veteran Bollywood filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra, his latest film “12th Fail” is the gift that keeps on giving.
Based on the 2019 book of the same name by Anurag Pathak, the film tells the true story of Manoj Kumar Sharma who conquered extreme familial poverty to pass one of the world’s toughest examination processes and become an Indian Police Service officer.
Distributed by Zee Studios, the modestly budgeted “12th Fail” released theatrically in October 2023 in a Bollywood market where only big-budget action spectacles were working and many smaller films were taking the easier route to bowing directly on a streamer. The lead cast of Vikrant Massey (Disney+ Series “Criminal Justice”) and Medha Shankr, while extremely competent, were not marquee names.
The film struck a chord with audiences and has grossed $8.5 million to date, more than three times its budget. “Each film has its own God, and it’s always...

New Delhi, March 19 (Ians) Composer-singer Amaal Mallik is thankful for lockdown in a way. It gave him time to create the score of "Saina", particularly the anthem song "Parinda".

I wanted to, for example, do something different for 'Parinda', since it is the anthem for the film. It was only possible during lockdown, because the film had gotten delayed that I got the time to work on it and that's when I decided to work with Macedonian Symphonic Orchestra for the film. New Delhi, March 14 (Ians) Composer-singer Amaal Mallik is excited about his upcoming soundtrack for "Saina", the biopic of ace shuttler Saina Nehwal, and particularly about the song "Parinda", for a special reason. The song, he recalls, was shot during lockdown with a live orchestra.
Describing the song as the anthem of the film, the 30-year-old musician recalls how he, along with music producer Meghdeep Bose and orchestrator Andrew T Mackay, felt a live orchestra was necessary for the song because it needed a "larger than life" approach.
So, in the midst of lockdown, the song was created with the help of Macedonian Symphonic Orchestra.
"Seeing 40 people playing in masks, giving it their all and witnessing it virtually was a different kind of high. It made me believe in the power of music and how it brings together people from different cultures and mindsets, (especially) in troubled times. It made me...

Over the 21st century, Bollywood cinema has entered into a completely different era of filmmaking and storytelling than was being made in the decades prior. Actors and directors who started their careers in the ‘80s and ‘90s have experienced such a drastic shift from their beginnings to what they are doing now that their older works seem almost archaic and unrecognizable. This has led, expectedly, to many of Bollywood’s artists making self-reflexive work that also reflects on the industry in general––Fan, Sanju, The Dirty Picture, Luck By Chance, and Shamitabh are just a few examples. Vikramaditya Motwane’s Ak vs Ak is the latest and best of the lot.
One of India’s most interesting filmmakers, Motwane’s movies are constantly in dialogue with both India’s cinematic past and its socio-political present. In his latest offering, he dives headfirst to deconstruct Bollywood’s cinematic identity crisis, where...

1.??Vidhu Vinod Chopra ? This master director-producer has directed some of the most iconic films like Parinda, 1942 A Love Story and Mission Kashmir. He is directing a film in India after 13 years since his last film Eklavya. He has spent 11 years making this sensitive film despite many advising him against it.

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year” goes the Xmas song, but it also applies to sorting through the dreck and crap that came out of Bollywood in 2015. I watched many of these duds so that you don’t have to, and trust me they’re not as hilarious as I’m going to make them, because for every great Jodi like Srk-Kajol in Dilwale there’s Sunny Leone being paired with Ram Kapoor. Yet there were some awful gems like Msg and its sequel that came out in the same year – take that annual Fast and Furious franchise! Herewith is the worst and secretly hilarious of the year.

This….how do I describe it? Welcome Back is not a film. It’s a joke. An extended gag about two aging dons who are looking for a bride, and who fall in love with the same cheesy girl, the sudden appearance of their long-lost kid-sister who wants to marry this tall and gym-beefed tapori who is the long-lost son of a character named Ghungroo, played by Bjp MP Paresh Rawal. Rawal will have a lot of explaining to do to his High Command about what he is doing adding to a campaign quite opposite of a Swach Bharat.
In the meanwhile this….this….entity masquerading as a film has a lot of explaining to do about how and why it does what it does to some of the biggest talent in the industry. The last time Anil Kapoor and Nana Patekar came together was in Vinod Chopra’s Parinda.

Goodbye Horses: Chopra’s Nonsensical English Language Debut
The point of Bollywood director Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s English debut Broken Horses seems lost, along with a whole host of other cinematic necessities, in translation. A sort of remake of Chopra’s 1989 film Parinda, the action is transposed from Mumbai to the Us Southwest Border circa 9/11, using a metaphor of brotherly discord to reflect the cultural shift toward dehumanization that occurs in the wake of both large and small scale violence. With several well-known cast members in the mix, the film’s biggest mystery is how none of them questioned the implausibility of their character’s dialogue and a staunchly illogical narrative before or during the making of the film. Hovering somewhere between the realm of watchable camp and stilted, po-faced sermonizing, the final product is insignificantly bizarre.

Vidhu Vinod Chopra has produced some of the best in Bollywood from 1989’s Parinda, to 2003’s Munna Bhai Mbbs and the follow up Lage Raho Munna Bhai in 2005, Parineeta in 2005, 3 Idiots in 2009 and last year’s big hit Pk. After making some brilliant films in Bollywood, the director decided to pursue a long held dream of making a film in Hollywood. What is even cooler is that he is just not producing the film, he also wrote and directed the thriller titled Broken Horses. As he quite freely admits, Vidhu Vinod Chopra does not have to direct movies for a living. “I mean, it wasn’t a job I was looking for,” Chopra said in New York, where he was working on behalf of “Broken Horses,” his thriller (April 10) starring Anton Yelchin, Vincent D’Onofrio and Chris Marquette. As a writer, producer and chairman of Vinod Chopra Films, he’s made some very successful features – 2009’s “3 Idiots,” in fact, is reportedly The biggest box-office hit in the history of Indian cinema. Directing? Not a priority. At the same time, the Chopra-directed, genre-busting “Parinda” (1989) is famous for having broken dramatically from the very same Bollywood mold that makes so many rupees for the Indian film industry, Chairman Chopra included, so he knows his way around a crime thriller. And he knows when he should direct one: “Broken Horses” is evidence of that. The story is twisted; so are its origins.

As a film journalist, it is common practice for us to regularly speak to actors and actresses about their upcoming film or project. Yet as someone who is passionate about Hindi Cinema, I consider it an incredibly rare treat to be able to speak to either a director or a producer who has played a fundamental role in orchestrating the making of a film. BollySpice had the absolute pleasure to speak with one of India’s most acclaimed filmmakers Mr Vidhu Vinod Chopra. He is the man who has directed several hit films such as Parinda (1989), 1942: A Love Story (1993) and Mission Kashmir (2000). Mr Chopra has also worked with director Rajkumar Hirani as a producer in films such as Munnabhai Mbbs (2004), Lage Raho Munnabhai (2007) and of course the global blockbuster 3 Idiots (2009).
We spoke to Mr Chopra about the upcoming film Pk, starring Aamir Khan, Anushka Sharma, Sanjay Dutt, Sushant Singh Rajput and Boman Irani.
