‘SNL’ Star Chloe Fineman on Playing a Stripper for ‘Summer of 69’ and Finding Time for Films
Image
Chloe Fineman did not take lightly her decision to tackle the role of sex worker Santa Monica in the Hulu movie Summer of 69.

The Saturday Night Live standout stars opposite Sam Morelos in the comedy feature from director and co-star Jillian Bell that is currently streaming. Fineman did extensive research for the film that centers on teen Abby (Morelos), who enlists Fineman’s stripper character to help her become more sexually enlightened in order to win over her high school crush.

In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Fineman discusses her random encounter with a stripper who ended up working on the movie, how her preparation for the role led to Lindsay Lohan offering her a part in the Freaky Friday sequel and how she feels when SNL deals with controversy.

‘9-1-1: Nashville’ Adds LeAnn Rimes and Kimberly Williams-Paisley to Cast
Image
“9-1-1: Nashville” has added two more names to its cast: LeAnn Rimes and Kimberly Williams-Paisley.

TheWrap has confirmed that the two performers will star in the forthcoming ABC series alongside fellow cast members Chris O’Donnell (“NCIS: Los Angeles”) and Jessica Capshaw (“Grey’s Anatomy”). Representatives for 20th Television and ABC declined to comment.

“9-1-1: Nashville” is being set up to be the third entry in the growing “9-1-1” universe. It comes on the heels of “9-1-1: Lone Star,” the franchise’s Rob Lowe-led Texas spin-off, which ended after five seasons in early February. The franchise’s flagship series, “9-1-1,” is currently in the midst of airing its eighth season. After premiering on Fox in 2018, “9-1-1” moved to ABC in its seventh season. “9-1-1: Lone Star,” conversely, aired in its entirety on Fox.

“9-1-1: Nashville” comes from Rashad Raisani and “9-1-1” co-creators Ryan Murphy and Tim Minear. The three are set...

Spencer Tracy movies: 20 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
Spencer Tracy was the two-time Oscar winner starred in a variety of classics before his death in 1967, including nine films opposite fellow legend Katharine Hepburn. Let's take a look back at 20 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.

Tracy pulled off the rare hat-trick of winning back-to-back Best Actor Oscars, first for his performance as a Portuguese sailor in "Captains Courageous" (1937), then for playing a dedicated priest helping wayward youths in "Boys Town" (1938). It's a feat that would only be repeated once more in this category by Tom Hanks ("Philadelphia" in 1993 and "Forrest Gump" in 1994).

Tracy would compete seven more times in the category: "San Francisco" (1936), "Father of the Bride" (1950), "Bad Day at Black Rock" (1955), "The Old Man and the Sea" (1958), "Inherit the Wind" (1960), "Judgment at Nuremberg" (1961), and "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?" (1967), which was recognized posthumously.

He's perhaps best remembered for starring in nine films with Hepburn, starting...

Alexander and The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Road Trip Review — A Fun, if Formulaic, Family Flick
Image
There are certain movies whose cultural impact is so undeniable that it becomes just a matter of time before a legacy sequel or, in the case of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, a standalone sequel is announced. Ten years after the release of the original film, here comes filmmaker Marvin Lemus – making his feature debut – and screenwriter Matt Lopez (Father of the Bride), who decide to bring a hilariously long title back to the big screen with Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Road Trip – for a more pleasant read, I’ll refer to it simply as Very Bad Road Trip.

Alexander Garcia (Thom Nemer) has always believed he has the worst luck in the world. When his mother Val (Eva Longoria) plans to take her seemingly disconnected family on a luxury vacation to Mexico City aboard a luxury caravan as part...

Why Jennifer Nettles Is Leaving Farmer Wants a Wife 2025
Image
Host Jennifer Nettles left Farmer Wants a Wife coming into Season 3 of its revival, and fans are confused over the decision.

Since the hit reality series returned from the dead on Fox in 2022, Nettles has been one of the few constants. For two seasons, she has guided audiences through the love stories of these farmers looking for love on the show.

However, since the debut of Season 3 (and its new cast of hopelessly romantic farming bachelors), Nettles has been absent, replaced by Father of the Bride actress Kimberly Williams-Paisley.

Kieran Culkin Wins Oscar and Reminds Wife of Her Promise About More Kids After the Emmys: ‘She Said, “I Will Give You Four When You Win an Oscar”’
Image
Kieran Culkin has won the Academy Award for best supporting actor for his performance in “A Real Pain.”

In his speech, he brought up the infamous moment when, after winning the 2024 Emmy Award for best actor for HBO’s “Succession,” he asked his wife, Jazz Charton, to have a third child — which he did only because she’d promised to have another kid if he won the Emmy, not thinking he would.

“After the show, we’re walking through a parking lot … and she goes, ‘Oh, God, I did say that!'” Culkin said. “‘I guess I owe you a third kid.’ And I turned to her, and I said, ‘Really, I want four.’ She turned to me — I swear to God, this happened there’s just over a year ago — she said, ‘I will give you four when you win an Oscar.'”

In the audience, Charton acknowledged that she had,...

Martin Short Wins First SAG Award at 74 Years Old

Beloved comedian actor Martin Short has finally won his first SAG Award. Short received the award for outstanding performance by a male actor in a comedy series for playing Oliver Putnam, the sometime Broadway director and murder-solving podcast co-host on the Hulu comedy “Only Murders in the Building.”

Unfortunately, Short couldn’t attend the ceremony, so presenters Joey King and Jack Quaid accepted on his behalf. Short’s “Only Murders” costar Steve Martin posted on Feb. 21 that Short contracted Covid at the “Saturday Night Live” 50th anniversary special.

Short finally won the prize for “Only Murders” after also landing nominations in the male comedy actor category in 2022 and 2023. When Nora Ephron Met Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger: Meet Horror’s New Iconic Killer in ‘Heart Eyes’
Image
What do you get when you mix Nora Ephron with Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, and Michael Myers? The combination might seem antithetical, but it works scarily well in director Josh Ruben‘s sweet, funny, terrifying rom-com/slasher movie mash-up, “Heart Eyes.”

Working from an inventive script by Phillip Murphy, Christopher Landon, and Michael Kennedy, Ruben somehow deftly satisfies fans of both “Sleepless in Seattle” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” An iconic new horror villain is born in the form of the movie’s Heart Eyes Killer, a slasher who stalks young lovers each Valentine’s Day.

Ruben, as he explained to IndieWire, wanted the movie’s two sides to be equally strong so that the horror would deepen the romance made all the more terrifying because of our investment in the two young lovers (Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding) fleeing from the Heart Eyes Killer. In studying films of both genres,...

‘Friday the 13th: Jason Lives’ Was ‘Heart Eyes’ Director Josh Ruben’s North Star on Slasher Rom-Com
Image
Scare Me and Werewolves Within director Josh Ruben is carving up his place in the slasher pantheon with Heart Eyes, a charming rom-com with a gnarly body count.

Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding star as co-workers mistaken for a couple, putting them directly in the crosshairs of a vicious killer on Valentine’s Day. The slasher, out in theaters this Friday, wears its romantic comedy influences on its sleeves, but one key slasher guided Ruben on his first slasher film.

“My gold standard, my north star, was Tommy McLoughlin’s Jason Lives,” Ruben tells Bloody Disgusting of the film’s influences. “That film is as brutal as it is silly as it is fun, and that was the white whale. Then everything after that was searching within myself, the kid that loved rom-coms, like Sleepless in Seattle, which is as funny and sweet as it is heartbreaking, super well acted but also silly,...

‘You’re Cordially Invited’ Review: Reese Witherspoon & Will Ferrell Don’t Reinvent Wedding Comedies But Still Find Laughs & Heart
Image
There is really nothing that is not completely predictable about Amazon Prime Video’s latest big budget romantic comedy, but with Reese Witherspoon back in the genre, and Will Ferrell doing what he does best, the chemistry is there, and so are some laughs, including a real Lol moment involving Ferrell and an uncooperative alligator that is a good reason comedies should probably best be seen with a crowd. Unfortunately, despite its stars and fan-friendly genre, this one is straight to streaming. At least in a Valentine’s Day period, You’re Cordially Invited qualifies more appropriately as a far more pleasant date movie than the horror and action Valentine’s movie the studios have planned this year. It isn’t going to make you forget My Best Friend’s Wedding, Bridesmaids and Father Of The Bride anytime soon, but it’ll do, even as the ‘R’ rating here seems a little harsh.

You’Re Cordially Invited – Review
Image
Margot (Reese Witherspoon) and Jim (Will Ferrell) in You’Re Cordially Invited. Photo Credit: Glen Wilson/Prime Video

Now that we’re shaking off the ice and snow (at least for a few days), is it too early to think about weddings, or even movie weddings? Sure, they’re always a ripe setting for romance and drama, though for the last couple of decades, it’s proven to be a perfect backdrop for comedy, from the Father Of The Bride reboots to Bride Wars, the Best Man series, and, of course, Bridesmaids. which often concern the ceremony itself and the long “prep”. Well, for this new flick we get two wedding parties, but the big focus isn’t on the couple, but rather on two relatives of the brides. And it’s the first pairing of two movie comedy vets. It’s a rare mix of a “rom-com” icon and...

‘Nosferatu’ Has Become One of the Highest-Grossing Remakes Ever Despite Digital Release
Image
Nosferatu recently arrived on digital platforms after only a few weeks in theaters, which came as a shock to many after it performed exceedingly well in its debut and the weeks following. At the time of writing, Nosferatu has grossed $93 million at the domestic box office and $73 million from international markets for a worldwide cumulative haul of $166 million. This $93 million in the U.S. is enough to make Nosferatu one of the top 30 highest-grossing remakes ever, sitting in the #29 spot ahead of Father of the Bride (1991) but still behind The Magnificent Seven (2016) and The Mask of Zorro (1998). The horror film from Robert Eggers most recently grossed only $1.9 million during its fifth weekend in theaters to finish in the #13 spot.

The Steve Martin Comedy That Beefed with the U.S. Military
Image
Steve Martin’s movie career is replete with comedy classics such as The Jerk, Roxanne and Father of the Bride, in which Martin and Martin Short appear in several scenes together and somehow resist the urge to relentlessly roast each other.

But he also made a number of not-so-memorable comedies. One movie that didn’t make much of a cultural dent was Sgt. Bilko, the 1996 remake of the ‘50s sitcom The Phil Silvers Show. The story of a scheming, amoral U.S. army sergeant flopped at the box office, and has since been largely forgotten. Even Martin himself wasn’t a fan.

In retrospect, perhaps the most interesting thing about Sgt. Bilko is that the filmmakers ended up feuding with the U.S. military while making it.

It’s not uncommon for Hollywood movies to negotiate deals with the Pentagon that allow them to use real-life military equipment and facilities in exchange for certain concessions.

Quick Links What is Something's Gotta Give About? Diane Keaton Helps Jack Nicholson Shine Comedically Something's Gotta Give Deserved Better

When people discuss the best movie performers of all time, there are a select few names that are typically thrown out for the Mount Rushmore of actors. For the Academy Award-loving crowd, the easiest answers are Meryl Streep, Daniel Day-Lewis, Denzel Washington, Marlon Brando, and Katherine and Audrey Hepburn, among others. The blockbuster lovers of the world will throw out equally valid names like Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L. Jackson, Sigourney Weaver, and Harrison Ford. While these names are the ones most commonly thrown out by the general populace, genre movie lovers have their own subset of legends that they look up to and admire.

The most stacked and competitive genre to curate a Mount Rushmore for might be comedy. The options are seemingly limitless, with a good portion of...

Before Kieran Culkin Goes For An Oscar, Revisit The Director & Co-Star's 96% Rt Movie From 14 Years Ago
Image
Kieran Culkin's star has been rapidly on the rise and his latest film, A Real Pain, could see him win an Oscar, but before that happens, take a beat to go back and revisit another incredible film by his co-star and director from 2010. Kieran Culkin is no stranger to Hollywood. As a child, he was frequently cast in minor roles in notable movies, including Father of the Bride, starring a comedy legend, and Home Alone, starring Macaulay Culkin. However, as is clear by the shared name, Kieran's brother, Macaulay, actually had a much more successful career in acting at the time.

While he did manage to land a leading role in a film in 2002, that was the year that also marked a several year-long hiatus from appearing in TV and film until he returned in 2008. His next biggest notable role was in 2010, when Culkin appeared in Scott Pilgrim vs.

The 15 Most-Watched Movies on Netflix in 2024, Ranked
Image
Netflix recently released the data of the top 10 most-watched films in 2024. The Millie Bobby Brown-led Damsel tops the chart with 143.8 million views in total, followed by Lift with 129.4 million views. Though most of the top 10 films have been released in recent years, the list also includes some all-time classics, such as 2015's Minions and 2017's The Boss Baby.

Three of the ten movies are made for audiences of all ages, and two are rom-coms. From the most recent shark movie, Under Paris, to the heartbreaking retelling of a 1975 plane crash, the most-streamed films of the year cover a wide range of genres. In the digital age, where many movies are primarily made for streaming services, the quality of these films can be uneven.

Updated by Jordan Iacobucci on January 8, 2025: 2024 has officially come to an end, leaving audiences with a backlog of terrific films to watch from the packed year of cinema.

Adria Arjona Reflects on Her Breakout Year: ‘These Directors Gave Me No Limitations’
Image
How busy has 2024 been for actress Adria Arjona? She graciously chatted with IndieWire from the airport, right before a recent flight. “It’s the only time where I can kind of have a second,” she said, sheepishly.

While the actress became a bonafide star-to-watch via a breadth of projects over the years, from “6 Underground” to “Father of the Bride” and “Andor,” Arjona recently achieved a new level of success as the romantic lead opposite Glen Powell (another 2024 breakout) in Richard Linklater’s “Hit Man.”

What followed the inventive Netflix rom-com of the summer was a standout role in Zoe Kravitz’s directorial debut “Blink Twice,” and now the opportunity to star and produce indie dramedy “Los Frikis,” in which she plays nurse to a group of youths in 1991 Cuba, who purposefully injected themselves with HIV in order to escape poverty by entering a government-run treatment home. And, yes, the...

Spencer Tracy Is a One-Armed Man in Search of the Truth in This Tightly-Wound Western Noir
Image
As he entered the elder statesman phase of his career, Spencer Tracy often played men of integrity whose gruff exterior masked a noble heart. Stanley Kramer used Tracy as the moral center of well-intentioned "message movies" like Inherit the Wind, Judgment at Nuremberg, and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, while comedies like Father of the Bride, Pat and Mike, and Kramer's It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World utilized this persona for laughs. Yet that late-career gravitas was perhaps never put to better use than in John Sturges's Western noir Bad Day at Black Rock. At a brisk 81-minutes, it's a story of racism and injustice that employs the moral weight audiences associate with Tracy to make its message clear without being preachy.

Succession's Kieran Culkin Says His First Director Called Him a "Dummy" when He was Just Six Years Old
Image
Many, many years before Kieran Culkin won an Emmy Award for his role as Roman Roy in Succession, he had an on-set experience that was less than ideal. People reports via the Smartless podcast, that while making his first commercial the director called him a “dummy.”

“First professional experience I had was a commercial when I was 6,” said Kieran to Smartless hosts Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett. Although Culkin doesn’t exactly remember what the commercial was for he said it was “something to do with learning disabilities.”

“The concept was I’m standing in front of a chalkboard with chalk in my hand, and I don’t know how to solve the easy thing in front of me,” recalled Culkin. “And the kids in the class are supposed to be calling me a dummy and stupid, all that,” he continued.
