His niece Kayse Gale wrote on Facebook, “It is with a heavy heart and a surprisingly light coffin (see what I did there?) that we announce the sudden passing of our uncle, Ed Gale. Ed Gale has taken his final bow and is now headlining in the afterlife. Ed hitched a ride to California when he was twenty years old, with $41 and a dream, and he never looked back. The Stunning Vasquez Rocks Served As A Key Filming Location For Multiple Sci-Fi Classics
Image
The Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park is located in the northern part of Los Angeles County, about a 45-minute drive from Hollywood proper (depending on traffic). They are a popular tourist destination because the layered rock formations jut out of the ground at strange, wild angles, giving them an alien look. They were named after Tiburcio Vásquez, a notoriously clever Mexican bandit who hid out among the rocks while eluding the cops back in the 1870s. Hikers have been hiding out among the rocks ever since, admiring their otherworldly beauty.

Vasquez Rocks has been a popular shooting destination for dozens of major films and TV shows, largely because they're such a short drive from all the production offices in Los Angeles. It's easy to bundle the cast of "Star Trek" into a van, dress three stuntman as a Gorn character, and go to the Rocks to film actors pretend-fight each other.

Keanu Reeves has been an absolute favorite of many film critics and audiences. His career has been very interesting since this actor has been open to starring in almost any genre. Reeves was born on September 2nd, 1964, in Beirut, Lebanon. He was raised in Toronto, Canada. He is of Chinese-Hawaiian descent from his father’s side. His father was a geologist. Styling Ted's Hair In Bill & Ted Was No Easy Task
Image
The appeal of Bill (Alex Winter) and Ted (Keanu Reeves) in Stephen Herek's 1989 sci-fi hit "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure" is their persistent ability to remain upbeat and relaxed. The characters may be a pair of none-too-bright wastoids from San Dimas, California, more interested in playing in their crappy metal band than, y'know, reading books, but they seem completely comfortable with themselves, confident with their surfers' patois and thimble-deep perception of the world. The characters only come to appreciate world history when they're given a time machine and meet famous historical figures -- Joan of Arc, Sigmund Freud, Genghis Khan, et al -- in person. Through films like "Bill & Ted," mass audiences learned that metal fans weren't Satan-worshiping bullies, but affable, silly, generally nice dudes.

Bill & Ted spoke like L.A. surfers, but weren't part of the beach scene. As such, their costuming needed to denote their characters specifically,...

Joss Ackland dead; Lethal Weapon 2 + Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey villain was 95
Image
Joss Ackland, a familiar face to eighties and nineties movie fans, is dead at 95. According to Variety, the actor died of natural causes. Famous for playing the loathsome South African villain in Lethal Weapon 2, Ackland had a long and distinguished career in film, TV and on-stage. Arguably, his most memorable screen moment came at the climax of Lethal Weapon 2 when, after pumping Mel Gibson’s Riggs full of bullets, he taunts Danny Glover’s Murtagh by boasting “diplomatic immunity,” to which Murtagh, in a crowd-pleasing moment, cocks his head and blows the bad guy away.

Ackland also made for a memorable bad guy in Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, where he played the villain, De Nomolos. He was also in The Hunt for Red October, K-19: The Widowmaker, and played Emilio Esteves’s kindly former coach in The Mighty Ducks. He also famously appeared in the Pet Shop...

Highlighting the Amazon Originals on the TV side this month are two heavy hitters. The first is The Horror of Dolores Roach on July 7. Oliver Wood, whose work as a cinematographer included such big-budget action films as The Bourne Identity and two of its sequels, along with studio comedies like Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, has died. He was 80.

Wood died Monday, Feb. 13, surrounded by loved ones at his Hollywood home following a battle with cancer, his agent Ann Murtha told The Hollywood Reporter.

He is known for working with a long list of prominent directors, including John Woo on Face/Off (1997); Adam McKay on Talladega Nights (2006), Step Brothers (2008), The Other Guys (2010) and Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (2013); Edward Zwick on Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016); Antoine Fuqua on The Equalizer 2 (2018); and Daniel Espinosa on Safe House (2012), Child 44 (2015) and Morbius (2022). The British director of photography acquired 60 credits over his five-decade career, including beloved action and comedy hits like “Die Hard 2” (1990), “Freaky Friday” (2003), “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby” (2006), and “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back” (2016).

Born Feb. 21, 1942, Wood moved to New York City at age 19 and found work on B-movies such as cult crime film “The Honeymoon Killers” (1969) and as a camera operator on “Body Rock” (1984), among others. Oliver Wood, Cinematographer of ‘The Bourne Identity’ and ‘Face/Off,’ Dies at 80
Image
Oliver Wood, an English cinematographer whose credits include “Die Hard 2,” “Face/Off,” “The Other Guys” and the original “Bourne” trilogy, died Monday, Feb. 13, at his home in Hollywood following a battle with cancer. He was 80.

With a career spanning across seven decades, Wood worked across a wide variety of projects, collaborating with directors like John Woo, Adam McKay, Antoine Fuqua, Barry Sonnenfeld and Larry Cohen. He was nominated for a BAFTA award for best cinematography for his work on 2007’s “The Bourne Ultimatum,” directed by Paul Greengrass.

Born in London, Wood moved to New York City when he was 19. His first major credit came on Leonard Kastle’s 1970 crime film “The Honeymoon Killers,” making a strong impression for his technique of using available light to give the anachronistic dark comedy the look of a newsreel.

Wood shot numerous B-movies and independent films throughout the late 1970s and ’80s, frequently collaborating...

Image
Erik Bloomquist's horror flick, She Came From The Woods, is in cinemas today and we have a clip to share with you in case you need any more coaxing to check it out. It's a short one but involves taking out a camper with a homerun swing for the fences. That's a win in our books. Check it out below. She Came From The Woods, the latest genre flick from Erik Bloomquist (Ten Minutes to Midnight). The horror film, releasing only in theaters on February 10th, stars Cara Buono (Stranger Things), William Sadler (Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey), Spencer List (Fringe), and Clare Foley (Sinister). The Daily Stream: Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey Is The Best Kind Of Stupid
Image
(Welcome to The Daily Stream, an ongoing series in which the /Film team shares what they've been watching, why it's worth checking out, and where you can stream it.)

The Movie: "Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey"

Where You Can Stream It: Prime Video

The Pitch: Are you feeling stressed right now? Overwhelmed? Perhaps a little Keanu Reeves will help. It always does.

Let's take a journey back to 1991. Bill S. Preston, Esquire (Alex Winter), and Ted "Theodore" Logan (Reeves) know the future. Their terrible band Wyld Stallyns will create a utopia someday, where everyone lives in harmony through their music. They know this because a time traveler called Rufus (George Carlin) comes back to visit them in the first film in a payphone booth, and takes them on a journey through time.

Now that future is in jeopardy because one gym teacher in the future sends back evil robots to...

Alex Winter 'would enjoy' working in another 'Bill & Ted' film
Tribeca Film Festival 2022
Los Angeles, Dec 8 (Ians) Actor Alex Winter does not mind working on a fourth part of the hit franchise, Bill & Ted.

He reprised his popular role as Bill Preston for the first time in nearly three decades in the recent Bill & Ted Face The Music, and he revealed that he and co-star Keanu Reeves would be up for another film in the franchise, although there are no plans currently in the works, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

"We don't need to do another. We don't particularly feel there needs to be another one, but we would enjoy making another one. That's really the honest answer. There's nothing more to it," said Winter.

"We are not currently planning another one. Certainly, no one has come to us and asked us to do another one. I don't know where those chips are gonna fall. I can tell you that, if there was interest in making another one,...

See ‘Bill & Ted’ Star Alex Winter’s Insane NYU Student Film, ‘Squeal of Death’ (Video)
Tribeca Film Festival 2022
This story about Alex Winter first appeared in the college issue of TheWrap magazine.

Before Alex Winter played Bill S. Preston, Esq. in “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure,” “Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey” and the recent “Bill & Ted Face the Music,” and before he directed a string of documentaries that include “Napster,” “Showbiz Kids” and the upcoming “Zappa,” he was an NYU film student struggling to pay his way through school.

But as an experienced child actor, Winter paid the bills by appearing in lots of commercials, doing voiceover work and even making the occasional movie.

During his freshman year in 1983, Winter also met fellow student Tom Stern, with whom he’d direct films all through school and into his professional life afterward. The summit of their NYU work was “Squeal of Death,” a 15-minute short about a hapless, squawking criminal that Winter describes as “a magnum opus of insanity.

Anthony Carrigan on Playing a Killer Robot in ‘Bill & Ted Face the Music’
Image
Anthony Carrigan endured hours of makeup to become Dennis Caleb McCoy, a time-traveling robot in “Bill & Ted Face the Music.”

The “Barry” star embraced the acting challenge, but struggled with the physical demands of wearing such a crazy costume in the dead of summer. He had a very unusual method for cooling off on the film’s New Orleans set (more on that below). The film, the long-awaited third entry in an unlikely trilogy about two metalhead slackers (Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves), arrived on-demand and in theaters on Aug. 28. That’s roughly three decades after the first two installments opened, 1989’s “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure” and 1991’s “Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey.”

What attracted you to the project?

I’ve been a fan of the franchise since seeing the movies on VHS. To be part of this final chapter, which was 30 years in the making, was incredible.

‘Bill and Ted’ Music Supervisor Jonathan Leahy on Creating the Song That Saves the Universe
Image
Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter return as Bill and Ted for another adventure in “Bill & Ted Face the Music,” on-demand and in theaters on Aug. 28, and their quest this time is to find a song they wrote and save the world through music.

But what’s the story behind that song? It took a village to put it together and numerous passes to bring the eight-minute spectacle together. Spearheading the process was music supervisor Jonathan Leahy.

Below, he breaks down how important it was to find the right guitar shredder and follow in Steven Vai’s footsteps, and how he found the right musicians to accurately riff off the sounds of Jimi Hendrix and Louis Armstrong.

So, no pressure: How did you create the song that saves the universe?

I had a small role in writing the song, but I had more of a creative role because one of...

Review: Bill & Ted Face The Music, Nostalgic Hits in Repackaged Form
Image
Arguably the first- or second-best time-travel comedy of all time, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, a surprise hit in 1989 elated, elevated, and entertained moviegoers with its uniquely resonant mix of genial, good-hearted, musician-wannabe slacker heroes, laidback, So-Cal vibes, and paradoxically deliberately dumb humor (that actually wasn’t). The inevitable rushed sequel, Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, followed just two years later. Although the sequel added a scene-stealing Grim Reaper, the Seventh Seal-inspired personification of Death, to the Bill & Ted universe, Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey received a lukewarm, qualified response from contemporary audiences. That unfortunate response left the third, trilogy-capping entry, Bill & Ted Face the Music, in limbo for the better of three...

‘Bill and Ted Face The Music’: The Long-Awaited Third Installment Is A Cheery Delight [Review]
Image
The long-long-long awaited sequel is a dicey enough proposition; remember “Independence Day: Resurgence”? “Blues Brothers 2000”? “Zoolander 2”? But it’s particularly sticky when it comes to Bill and Ted, whose inaugural efforts – 1989’s “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure” and 1991’s “Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey” – were so decidedly of their moments, rooted in the metal-dude doofery of the end of the ‘80s.

‘Bill & Ted Face the Music’ Review: Third Time’s a Most Excellent Charm
Image
It’s been three decades between gigs for those Wyld Stallyns William “Bill” S. Preston, Esq. (Alex Winter) and Theodore “Ted” Logan (Keanu Reeves). Was it worth the wait to once again see these two knuckleheads be excellent to each other? Totally, dudes. When Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure debuted in 1989, The New York Times called it “painfully inept.” To paraphrase Bill, the movie, in which the duo traveled back in time to pass their high school history final (with some help from Socrates, Napoleon, Joan of Arc, and Abe...

‘Bill & Ted Face the Music’ Film Review: Our Heroes Battle an Excellent Midlife Crisis
Keanu Reeves, William Sadler, Alex Winter, Kristen Schaal, Sharon Gee, Anthony Carrigan, Samara Weaving, Kid Cudi, and Jack Haven in Bill & Ted Face the Music (2020)
For a movie in which the world could end at any moment, “Bill & Ted Face the Music” is awfully sweet and cheery.

And for that, we have to thank Bill S. Preston, Esq. and Ted “Theodore” Logan, who 30 years ago were the sweetest and cheeriest of teen heroes and are now hanging onto that into middle age. They’re not the smartest of heroes, of course, but they know what works for them: As Ted says at one point in this movie, “Maybe we should always not know what we’re doing!”

But “Bill & Ted Face the Music” does know what it’s doing, which is to preserve the essence of the characters played by Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves even as it dumps a most unpleasant midlife crisis and an even more heinous threat to reality as we know on their still-shaggy heads.

‘Bill & Ted Face the Music’ Review: Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter Reunite for a Most Excellent Sequel
Image
“Bill & Ted Face the Music” has a high-fluff effervescence. It’s about how Bill (Alex Winter) and Ted (Keanu Reeves), those chuckle-brained metal heads who speak like Jeff Spicoli with a thesaurus, have just 77 minutes to travel through time and get the song — from themselves! Because they wrote it already! Whoa!! — that will unite humanity and save reality as we know it. As they trip further and further into the future, they keep meeting older versions of themselves, a variation on the doubling-up-of-identity-through-space-time stunt that the first two “Bill and Ted” films played with, only here it gets a major metaphysical stoned workout. Meanwhile, Bill and Ted’s respective daughters, Thea (Samara Weaving) and Billie (Brigitte Lundy-Paine), who are of course chips off the old blockhead, go back in time to gather a band of musicians that includes Louis Armstrong, Jimi Hendrix, Mozart, and Kid Cudi.

That sounds like...

Does ‘Bill & Ted Face the Music’ Have a Post-Credits Scene?
Keanu Reeves, William Sadler, Alex Winter, Kristen Schaal, Sharon Gee, Anthony Carrigan, Samara Weaving, Kid Cudi, and Jack Haven in Bill & Ted Face the Music (2020)
“Bill & Ted Face the Music” is the long-awaited conclusion to to an unlikely teen comedy franchise that launched the careers of Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter. The original two movies have over time developed a cult fanbase and have their DNA in numerous slacker comedy duos throughout the ’90s and beyond. But did anyone think it would actually nearly three decades for a reunion to happen? Whoa.

In fact if you ask Reeves and Winter — and we did — they’d say they really didn’t think it would ever happen at all, despite the repeated efforts of producer Scott Kroopf, writers Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon and director Dean Parisot, to bring all the pieces together over the last 10 years. And the new movie even plays with the idea that we’ve been away from Bill & Ted for so long, with each of them now middle-aged dudes with families...
