Low-budget but had its charm
johnpowellmetz16 May 2022
Fifteen came out when I was 13, so I was in the target demo. I looked forward to it every week, and then right after would call my friend who also watched it and we'd discuss both how terrible/stupid it was and how we were dying to see what happened next. It was a 30-minute show but we'd talk about each episode for at least an hour.

Out of curiosity, now at age 43, I just watched some of it again, and I have a bit of a different take. It was obviously low-budget and hastily put together - the writing is basic, and the characters are stereotypes. But I do see a lot of good things. For one, the actors were actually the age they were portraying, and the awkwardness was realistic and actually kind of charming. Kids that age are insecure and have trouble striking up conversations and expressing themselves, and that came through clearly. Some of the more seasoned actors (those who played Ashley, Matt, Courtney, Dylan, Arseman and of course Ryan Reynolds who played Billy) actually were pretty talented and got better as the show progressed. And I appreciated that it was about actual everyday issues that teens deal with, basic stuff like homework, family issues, sports, clothes, not fitting in. A lot of higher-budget, slicker and more sensationalist teen dramas like Elite and Euphoria obviously excel at what they do but they're very dark and blatantly unrealistic. "Fifteen" was, at least, trying to meet its audience where it was in an authentic way. And although it's corny at times, it's not overly heavy-handed with moral lessons.

The biggest issue I have in rewatching it is that the kids are overly rude to each other. Almost every conversation seems to end with someone insulting the other and storming off. Most characters seem to be in a never-ending state of joyless worry. But maybe that's realistic; adolescents aren't exactly wellsprings of confidence and happiness.

Overall I think some of the comments here are a little mean and unfair. It was an ambitious project (26 episodes a season??) on a shoestring budget and did the best it could.

Groundbreaking--Don't Blame It for the Budget
charvakan25 May 2012
Okay, the writing wasn't great, and the acting was what you'd expect from middle-schoolers. But the story lines did resonate with kids. The production values were poor and the cast tiny because the show obviously had a very small budget. One or two other reviewers mentioned that the cast were playing people their own age, which I thought was fantastic. (I can't even watch "high schoolers" who are pushing 30; how lame is that?) One thing I did not see mentioned is that I don't believe the show ever had an adult in any scene. (Budget? Not wanting to show up the kid actors? Or brilliant effort to make the show unique?) That was a stroke of genius, and I think it helped the show a great deal. Just as in real life, these kids were working out their problems themselves in their own half-baked way. The comparison with dopey sitcoms like "Saved by the Bell" and overproduced crapola like "Glee" miss the point. This was an attempt to do something on the edge, something that spoke to real people on a level deeper than entertainment. It was a success, and that's why people remember it.

Corny but lovable Teen Soap Opera
AdrienneGrayceMusic6 September 2018
I was 11 when this came out and I absolutely loved it. It came out shortly after 90210, which I also loved. I watched all of the Nickelodeon tv series back then. I found out that Amazon has FIFTEEN season 1 on Prime now so I decided to relive my teen years by re-watching it. Now looking back, I am realizing how corny it was and how BAD the acting was. But wow, did Ryan Reynolds change..from his Billy days. Who would have known that the little guy Billy on Fifteen would be a big time super star. My 11-13 year old self would rate this a 10, but as an adult, I have it a 7.

doing camera on 15
mringlet31 October 2007
Hi, I was a cameraman on "Fifteen" during it's second season, done in Ottawa at CJOH-TV (Ist season-Vancouver, last 2-Orlando); recently found a cast/crew photo which motivated me to look it up on IMDb. Both 15 and You Can't Do That On Television were produced there at the same time, but never on the same days, so I don't think that was where Ryan and Alanis 1st met, but it's a small world after all. We did the whole season's episodes in a few weeks, cramming several sets, along with cameras, booms, etc. into a relatively small space, circumstances which I think might explain the shortcomings in production value, but I'll argue that the cast often did exemplary work in light of their ages and experience at the time. Ryan and Laura's success is no surprise. Anyway, we did crank them out like sausages, but it was a fun show to work and the kids were great.

What happened to this great show?!
jukimol21 August 2007
I used to love this show and watched it religiously when I was younger. It started the career of so many young talented stars who have gone on to make top movies and TV shows. Ryan Reynolds (of "Smoking Aces," "Amytiville Horror," and "Waiting") and Laura Harris ("Dead like Me" and "24") were so young when they were on this show, but even then they showed they could pack a punch with their acting.

I often wondered why we haven't seen this re-done or at least re-released on DVD for all us fans who used to be so enamored with the great acting and writing on the series. Ah to re-live the 90's!

The other thing that rocked about this show was the story lines. I mean, they dealt with some real adult issues and it wasn't in an "ABC after school special" sort of way. I wish there were more quality content like this on the air now.

Like Ed Wood directed a teen soap opera
jfgibson738 August 2021
Even though it was pretty low-rent, this was still a highly watchable show. There was always something ridiculous happening that was unintentionally funny. You can find clips online that give you an idea of how weak the writing was. Watch it with some friends for maximum comedic effect.

Good show
Catherine_Grace_Zeh17 July 2006
I used to watch this show when I was a little girl. When I think about it, I remember it pretty well. If you ask me, it was a good show. Two other things I remember pretty well are the opening sequence and theme song. In addition to that, everyone was ideally cast. Also, the writing was very strong. The performances were top-grade, too. I hope some network brings it back so I can see every episode. Before I wrap this up, I'd like to say that I'll always remember this show in my memory forever, even though I'm not sure if I've seen every episode. Now, in conclusion, if some network ever brings it back, I hope that you catch it one day before it goes off the air for good.

I use to watch this show.
Jennifer-matela26 June 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I use to watch this show. This show use to be on Nickelodeon. They were in high school. All I remember is that Ryan Renyolds character was an alcoholic. OH and his girlfriend on the show was the blonde girl who was the alien in The Faculty, when she talked she sounded like she was whispering, it drove me nuts. REmember the other show when you said water they would dump water on you and when you said I Don't KNOW they would dump slim on you. I don't know if i have another two line left in me. I just wanted to write a quick review ya know. So this is the eighth line. The next line (this one) will be my 9th. So I only have one more to go. The END

2/3 - "Fifteen" was a decent series!
awesomemente3 February 2009
This was one series I really liked. It seems like Nickelodeon made a curve to the outside corner by landing "Fifteen" But the fact that it made it to 65 episodes was a good thing. But even with the series more than 15 years old it seems like it could be run another network and a new "Fifteen" could return to television. Ashley was one of my favorites. The various outfits she wore on "Fifteen" The music worked in between scenes. I liked how the series was filmed in three different locations. Orlando was a decent location to film the later seasons and you can tell that. I was in the studio audience for "Figure it out" before but I would of loved to see the making of a "Fifteen" episode. When I think of Nickelodeon in the 1990's this is one series that scored well in my book. We need more things like this on TV. Nickelodeon doesn't let their TV series deal with issues this was one that dealt with them.

It's a start!
thedanker25 May 2007
I have to agree with most everyone's opinion that this show was poorly produced as well as written. The acting was not much more above the lower production values however I feel an actor can only rely on the material provided to them and make the best of it. In keeping with this thought I feel it is important to point out that one actor has risen and persevered well beyond this campy to tasteless production to have become a respectable and quite talented performer.I am referring to Laura Harris a Canadian born actor who has etched her way through many poorly produced shows and movies to find a place on the HBO hit "Dead Like Me" where she plays the role of Daisy Adair and to her credit she handles this role in an efficient manner.I remember having a typical boyhood crush on the young actress during this series where she played Ashley a soft spoken yet intelligent 7th grader.I felt as though if anyone might "make it" from this series it surely would be Laura Harris and true to her nature she did excel in the acting field to win the respect of many producers who now recognize her for her talent as well as unique Nordic blond allure. If you ever do have the opportunity to view this series I recommend that you have something epic to watch after wards such as the 'Godfather' or perhaps 'Beaches' in order to remind yourself that there is after all a great deal of true production integrity and value out there and that this series is only a low-budget reminder of what Laura Harris can simply state about her time on the show and I bet she would quote many a young actors words of defense by saying "It's a start!"

Addictive
marksandig4 January 2007
The continuing High School saga was a Sunday ritual until it's demise. Who can forget those Canadian accents in the 1st 2 seasons. The non-stop drama with future stars Ryan Reynolds & Laura Harris. It was nice that they used actual teenagers instead of the typical 20 something usuals that appear in teen shows and movies. Down the line there were great characters, Brooke the snob, Jake the loser, Dylan the rebel, Billy (Ryan reynolds) was a rebel wannabe but an OK kid, then he turned into a jerk. Arsemann was nice as was David. Even Chris turned out OK after befriending Russ when he found out Russ was very ill. How about when Chris fired Dylan from the band (teenagers In Love) and replaced him with Roxanne who was a horrible singer. Arsemann was actually a good singer, but quit when tensions rose. The band could only perform one song and what a great one it was..."well i'm too old to cry & too young to fly, but mama says be glad i'm young & don't ask why, because i'm 15, not old enough to be free"....long live Fifteen. Now we just need the DVD's to come out.

Cheesy but I couldn't stop watching
cadillacjack-0642329 September 2022
The story was good but for the most part, the acting wasn't. Brooke did a great job but I wish they kept Kelly so we could see them feud in season 2. Matt and Dylan were good as well Courtney was terrible esp how she was all dramatic about het parents divorce. I get it's hard on kids but she acted like they were dying. Worst of all was Olaf. They were right to ditch him. This guy is supposedly from Finland but had a perfect Canadian accent. He was so awkward and annoying. Likewise Janis had to go. I hated how she acted so desperate for frlends and claimed she was very popular at her old school. In real life, you know the students there would have ignored her too. Finally, how many times did they use the phrase "what's that supposed to mean?" Every character uttered those words and some to the point of absurdity.

Comicly bad
supertrav77729 August 2002
It's been nearly 10 years since I've seen an episode of this but here's what I remember of it. There were a few characters but the main focus of the show was the relationship between Matt (the basketball star with a drinking problem) and Ashley (the princess). Then, in order of importance, there was Dylan (the guitar playing pretty-boy rebel), Brook the snob, then there was some kid who was Dylan's hanger-on, and another one who was Matt's hanger-on. I think there was some other girl in there who was important but not as easily stereotyped. I forget her name. Then this guy named Chris came along who was a bass-playing rebel who was a more evil version of Dylan. Quite a few other characters came and went each season (most vanishing without an explanation). I now will hang my head in shame for accurately remembering as much of that show as I can. This was the kind of show you would watch but dared not admit to anyone you watched. It was stupid, cheesy, but still quite fun to watch. This was a low-budget version of Degrassi Jr High.

NICKELODEON'S NOTORIOUS TEEN SOAP OPERA!
Gerald-O27 September 1999
FIFTEEN is probably one of the worst shows I ever saw...but it was oh so fun to watch!!!! This 1991 Nickelodeon "teen soap opera" had welfare production values and the worst dialogue ever! But I couldn't help avoiding it! The high school itself had like 10 students in it. The cafeteria had like 3 tables and didn't serve hot lunch, for everyone had to bring it bagged. The lockers never really locked, for they swung back open. Oh..and the locker rooms..it was horribly obvious that that the boys locker room was the same room as the girls...with pink papers on the wall signifying femininity. Did this school have a school board? The characters in the show are so corny and ugly. No one was like friends with each other. They all bitched at each other and all the subplots are centered about what one kid "overheard" about that kid's drinking problem..I could go on and on ..anyway..this show ..which makes "Saved by the Bell" look like Jane Austen..as horrendous to watch as it is...is still a blast to watch because its so deliciously crappy!

Pioneer in the teen soap genre
crimson0331 August 2005
This show popped up in my memory one night as commercials for "One Tree Hill," "The OC," and "Smallville" bombarded my TV screen. I was in fifth or sixth grade when "Fifteen" was on the air, and I remember sitting with my sisters in front of my grandparents' TV on a random Saturday or Sunday afternoon, eagerly awaiting the next episode. I only watched it sporadically, since we didn't have cable TV ourselves, so Ashley would be dating Matt in one episode and then the next episode I saw had Ashley running off with Dylan. I was fairly young and easily bedazzled by the "drama," but I still vaguely remember thinking that there had to be more than just those ten people at the school!

It may have had corny plot lines, low-budget sets, and clichéd cardboard cut-out characters, but even so, I consider "Fifteen" to be one of the pioneering shows in the contemporary teen soap genre along with "Beverly Hills 90210." The WB network should thank their lucky stars that "Fifteen" ran and did well enough for this type of TV show to continue.

Gerald is as wrong as Mitch
kidr10t2 November 2000
Fifteen was THE premier teen angst show of our generation! I don't know what Gerald was smoking, but Fifteen's candid look at the problems facing today's youth was enlightening and original. It made it possible for Saved by the Bell to deal with pot smoking and Kids Incorporated to eventually tackle teen pregnancy!! Without this show, we would still be watching shows where all they do is play practical jokes on Ms. Bliss. In fact, even 90210 didn't tackle these serious issues until Fifteen forged the path ahead of them. On a personal note, when I had to go to detox when I was 16, the show's episodes on Matt's drinking problems really spoke to me and helped me through that tough time. I realized my friends were just trying to help me. Thank you, Fifteen! I unfortunately have never gotten over my intense crush on Ashley though. As I am getting married later this month, I hope that my passion for her will not be a hindrance in my marriage.

Why Did I Suddenly Remember This Show?
Eschete11 April 2005
I was talking to my nephew about bad television shows the other day when this one came to mind. I remember watching it with friends in junior high just to laugh at how stupid and badly-produced it was. All I can really remember is a character named Dylan (who was supposed to be a rebel) and Dylan's ugly girlfriend. Why were so many characters named Dylan in the early nineties? What a stupid name.

Anyway, in one episode, Dylan plays the guitar down at the local "teen scene"/maltshop place. They seem to have actually let the actor play...and he was HORRIBLE. He made several grating, audible mistakes and they just LEFT THEM IN. No post-edit! And, when the actor finished, the audience clapped and cheered. I remember laughing and laughing at this episode. And talk about wooden acting! Oh! They had the obligatory "anti-alcohol" episode. And one kid had to pretend to be drunk. Oh, God! I'd give anything to see this show again! A+ for camp, F- for quality.

One of Nickelodeon's best shows before selling-out
patricklew91115 October 2000
Fifteen was one of the coolest shows I watched when I was a little kid . And the plots were just like a teen show you would see on MTV . I totally remember the show , but not the episodes . I wish Nickelodeon would bring this show back with re-runs . Now Nickelodeon has c**p such as Catdog and Spongebob . They're not great as they used to anymore . Please bring back Fifteen , Roundhouse , Welcome Freshmen , and all those shows from the early 90s please !

a cast of 12! nickelodeon's worst show ever!
breezygirl18 August 2005
i have a high threshold for pain: i watched pretty much every episode of "fifteen" when they originally aired. i agree that this is one of the worst shows ever produced and actually aired on television. the "school" consisted of a hallway with a handful of 3 lockers and a lot of empty space. there are maybe 2 or 3 extras, bringing the total school population to about 12. "fifteen" makes "saved by the bell" look like a high class production with good acting. my all time favorite/most hated character was the scheming brook who was oh-so-subtle in her glaring looks and commentary out loud to herself. i can't believe nickelodeon aired this multiple times throughout the week. they should have stuck with more "double dare" reruns.

best nickelodeon show ever: "roundhouse."

wasn't there a band?
edilbim8 October 2005
sadly i don't remember anyone from this show other then the blond girl. the young drummer from the band and some love triangle between the girl and two others ( that i think were in a band)

I know when i was young but i did like the show; Now i could say yeah..it was a silly teen soap, but it really did fit in nicely with the other shows running on nick.

i believe this came on right before welcome freshmen, and after the tomorrow people. there were so many awesome shows back then..i don't know what happened to any of them...

Pete and Pete, hey dude, salute your shorts and even...that one one with the slime...

I loved 15
Mattswife9720 May 2002
I have to agree with another person's comment, I also would like to see re-runs of fifteen since it's been a very long time since I've seen it. Fifteen deals with everyday teenager problems. From drinking to bullying. I also agree that there should have been a few more characters since it was mostly at school. Please let me know if you are ever going to show it again. I will record it next time so I can always cherish the show.

Absolutely Horrible
kelkel7521 March 2002
This show had the WORST acting and the worst scripts I've ever seen or heard.. I actually watched it once when I was a teen, but I couldn't sit through more than one episode(I think there was a marathon of the show on that day) I wonder how many people slit their wrists that day??? This show made "Saved by the Bell" and "Parker Lewis can't lose" seem realistic.. I hope I never find it on T.V again!

this is easily one of the finest shows ever to hit the satelites of the world. I love the deep plots and the great sets. The acting was at great and Brook was hot hot hot!!!!! And she was the best character on the show except for the guy that got drunk all the time he was pretty cool too. Nick needs to bring this show back!!!!!!!

cast of future actors
gwyn1vere16 May 2005
Let us not forget. Nickelodeon was a launching pad for many future B list stars. "You Can't Do That On Television" where the green slime originated was one of the shows. (Few children today watching the Kids' Choice Awards are aware of the slime's origin or what the trigger was for getting slimed.) "Fifteen" was another. Though Ryan Reynolds was playing the 13 year old little bratty brother Billy, he was still a prominent character. Thought, Alanis Morrisette was on "You Can't Do That on Television" probably near the time Ryan Reynolds was on "Fifteen" - could that have been the basis for the relationship they share today? Just a thought.

It was a great squishy teen drama that I loved to watch being in late elementary school and early middle school Saturday afternoons before leaving for piano lessons. It seemed so racy then. But, it's nothing compared to what kids will watch today.
