DVD versus VHS recorded off Disney channel
kathaleenfromaberdeen30 July 2009
this is an entertaining movie full of catchy tunes i found myself still singing. i wish more people had watched it so when i start singing one of the songs they would join in! my kids loved it we recorded on VHS years ago. i finally found the DVD and ordered it. when it came we watched it and realized that the DVD version was different than the version we recorded. some of our favorite songs on the recorded version are different on the DVD. what happened !!?? does anyone know how i can get the version that broadcast on Disney rather than the DVD version?? if you haven't seen the "other" version then the DVD is fine but if you have..... its a little disappointing.

80's time capsule--Van Dyke Parks fans will enjoy...
cyberdale15 December 2005
"Quirky" doesn't begin to describe this. If you're not in the mood for this, you may well find it intensely annoying, but if you relax there's much to enjoy for adults as well as kids (my 5-year-old daughter adores it). It's a veritable Who's Who of 80's pop culture (remember Pia Zadora??). In fact, the lead actor Dan Gilroy is about the only one I didn't recognize, although he does a fine job. The acting is at once broad and deadpan, with lots of wordplay and bad puns.

Fans of the cult musician/composer (and former child actor--see "The Swan" with Grace Kelly) Van Dyke Parks will take special pleasure in his whimsical score; Van Dyke even acts in this one. Director Jeff Stein ("The Kids Are Alright") has his 80s MTV video skills down (fans of the fish-eye lens will have a ball), but the story meanders to a pleasant conclusion, and if it's not your cup of tea, you can at least enjoy "spot the cameo" (look! It's Dweezil Zappa!).

Don't judge it by the ratings numbers! It defies that.
MyMovieTVRomance26 July 2023
Imagine The Wizard of Oz meets Pee-wee's Playhouse. Featuring Jean Stapleton, of 1 of Joan Jett's favorite TV shows, All In the Family.

So many of Joan's friends and acquaintances in this movie. It's only missing @joanjett!

Also featuring Harry Anderson of Night Court (in the character of Peter Piper), whom I confused for Larry Anderson, who shares a birthday with Joan Jett and starred in Lucille Ball's last sitcom.

Rhyming name confusion is so appropriate for a movie all about rhymes

So, do I wish to live in Rhymeland, where nursery rhyme characters are real, where all good things are possible, and where the most eligible bachelor is Mother Goose's son? Yes! Do I love the tacky sets, & how everything looks like it popped right out of a coloring book? Double yes

Slow, and even boring in parts. But at the same time, somehow comforting, somehow magical! Watching this, and feeling like I am part of this world, this land of nursery rhymes, puts me in a state of bliss. With how low tech it is, it's more magical than the most stunning cgi. I love these practical effects and sets! All of that means that I love this movie!

And God bless Shelley Duvall, who executive produced this movie, and who really seems to belong in Rhymeland. Shelley fits right into this world, and to be perfectly honest, I do too.

#ShelleyDuvall #MotherGoose.

you have got to see this...
captainxjackxsparrow17 February 2007
i remember this movie from when i was a kid... it makes a lot more sense now, but it is an amazing movie. its a lot of fun, and if you haven't seen Debbie harry as the old woman who lives in a shoe,Cheech Merin as a carnival guy, and Paul Simon as Simple Simon, then you haven't really seen a good movie. i can only imagine how much fun that movie was to make. . . i remember watching it nearly every day after school, and i still use quotes from the movie. . . you have to see this movie if you haven't already. its not necessarily an "A" list movie, but it is a movie that is so funny, and so much fun, that even if a critic wouldn't suggest it, its too much fun to turn away from.

This movie is a special cloud
loserbeth16 September 2001
Mere words cannot justify the meaning and social commentary that this film makes. It personifies the isolated feeling from "reality" that all humans feel from time to time, and as a bonus does so with our favorite pop culture sock, movie and TV stars! Where else can you see Cyndi Lauper with, Pia Zedora, Katey Sagal, Harry Anderson (sorry, no magic tricks), Paul Simon, The Stray Cats, Art Garfunkel, ZZ Top, and Woody Harrelson dressed as a cigar smoking sheep? Maybe in Rhymeland...

Best Movie Ever Made!
MariahCarey108822 December 2003
This has been my favorite movie ever since I was 2. My mom taped it when it aired in 1990, and I've watched it ever since. Watching it over and over again makes it the funniest movie I've ever seen. I recommend this to children and even adults because it is very entertaining. Believe it or not, there are many famous people in this movie as well.

A children's movie for the child in everyone!
Sparki3 October 2011
This is a sparkling bonbon of an entertainment that kids and grownups alike can enjoy as a slew of entertainment's brightest stars portray beloved Mother Goose characters who help Mother Goose's son solve the mystery of his missing mom. (The Three Blind Mice (Bobby Brown) as film noir detectives! The Three Little Kittens ('80s band the Stray Cats)as a rock band! Georgie Porgie (Art Garfunkel) as the owner of a nightclub and Mother Hubbard (Elayne Boosler) running a diner! Gotta love it!)My only complaint is that David Bowie appeared nowhere in the cast (but then I'm a Bowie fan)

The music is infectious and sticks in the brain and the costumes and sets are adorably quirky.

I recommend this movie highly, whether you're 4 or 104+ or anywhere in between

20th Anniversary!!:)
Rockershowone66019 May 2010
Today is the twentieth anniversary of this movie's premier on The Disney Channel which was May 19, 1990. Although it wasn't one of the best movies I had or have ever seen I do remember watching it on this day with fond memories. Both the world at large and the Disney Channel were sooooooooo different back then, and if you ask me they played so much more positive and worthwhile roles than now. The 1980's which were the decade in which I spent my childhood had just ended, so much was left over from it and the glory and endless possibility of everything was everywhere. I also have vivid memories of the announcer of the Disney Channel announcing the best things that were upcoming and incredible series. Mother Goose Rock'N'Rhyme was as innovative as it was breathtaking and like Faerie Tale Theater (which Shelly Duvall who stares in this movie was the creator) it featured stars among the biggest of the day. I'll be back here with more later, but for now let this movie's twentieth anniversary shine!

put it on DVD
Qemorio12 January 2006
I watched this movie over and over again as a kid. I want to see this movie put on DVD and watch it over and over again as an adult. It is so much deeper than Mother Goose rhymes and funny as hell. You will never again see a cast of characters like this put together in such a way. Also as a child it gave a whole new insight into the world of Mother Goose and the world of imagination. I was able to see a "real" side to all those stories I had been read over the years. Now looking back on this movie I wish I could show it to all of my friends I think they would love it and maybe one day the studio will put it out on DVD and we will be able to enjoy it all over again. It is simply awesome!

Good family entertainment.
Crowbot-210 August 1999
This is good clean family entertainment. It'll keep the kids occupied and the parents know who most the stars are so they'll enjoy watching them making complete idiots out of themselves. Duvall has done it again. 7 0ut of 10.

For children of all ages!
Yalith8 March 2003
This movie has it all: famous faces from the film, tv, and music industries playing Nursery Rhyme characters. Who wouldn't want to see Little Richard as Old King Cole, Howie Mandel dressed in an egg costume as Humpty Dumpty, and The Stray Cats dressed as a musical cat band (literally). I know everyone in my family has always loved watching it. I think you will too!

MUCH Better for Adults!!! LOL!!!
rrlitch26 July 2005
"Kids Movie"? Not in my opinion!!!

This movie is Definitely for adults! Kids enjoy the basic story line (which is kinda weak), but only adults will get the FULL humor and the innuendos that FILL the movie!

Example: Little Richard was at his BEST playing "Old King Cole" - a "merry" old soul.... ZZ Top play the "Three Men in a Boat" (which is actually an over-sized tea cup!)... Bobby Brown is one of the "Three Blind Mice" - who are supposed to be detectives??? Paul Simon does a GREAT job as "Simple Simon" - his lines are so off the wall that you'll have to rewind this section several times because you'll be laughing so hard! Howie Mandel is "Humpty Dumpty"... EVERY character is played by a known TV or Movie actor - ranging from Jean Stapleton to Pia Zadora!!

Unfortunately, someone borrowed my copy and I can't find another. Any help here would be GREATLY appreciated!

Great for everyone especially for kids!
ircckid2023 September 2000
This movie is the best for children in learning the basics for the Mother Goose Nursery Rhyme Series! It's an up-beat version that kids will love and learn fast and easy. So many favorite veteran actors and actresses are in this as well to make it fun for the whole family and everyone!

great movie!
thriller02328 October 2003
I loved this movie as a kid...I watched it so many times i think the tape wore out. The imagery is so good and it's bursting with so many stars! (among my favorites: Paul Simon and Little Richard...even though Little Richard's performance was so good it scared me somewhat) If you've never seen this movie i suggest watching it right away because it shouldn't be missed.

If you think some movies are special clouds, so is this one!
suburbanspeed12 November 2004
I can say that many movies may qualify as clouds. In this year alone, at least half a dozen movies that have been released we can all agree upon as being clouds, or at least cloud-like (take for example, Mean Girls and Kill Bill Vol. 2). Of all these many clouds, only a few stand out from the rest of these clouds as being truly or at least somewhat special. This movie is definitely a special cloud, and I would recommend it to anyone that enjoys clouds. The music of this movie inspires us to look within ourselves, and perhaps to even realize our own potential for cloudiness. It is through movies like Mother Goose Rock 'n' Rhyme that we as a society can provide something valuable for future generations, much like the Colliseum or the XFL. Quality film-making, and addresses social issues such as alienation, hegemony, adoption, and suffrage.

A horrid movie, i show it to all my friends & we lampoon it
jakegeiger1 November 2004
I have read several reviews and message board entries on here, and the problem with you guys is that you are remembering it from the context of a 6 year old. I still own a copy and i tote it along everywhere i go and show it to film friends of mine and we cry with laughter.

This movie is the worst rubbish imaginable. Our only guess to why all these people agreed to do this movie is to fulfill a court order of community service hours. The acting is horrendous, our lead actress Shelly Duvall takes the taco here pal. (the only good acting comes from Gordon through out the entire movie, luckily) The costumes should be illegal, ex: the Stray Cats bar. Some of the Rhymies are just plaster masks loosely attached. it makes me sad for Rick Baker. The downright gumption of the producers to get away with the poorly construed innuendo's of Woody Harrelson's Little Lamb, makes me sigh. This movie can probably seen as a metaphor for the consumerism and facade of the world of the 1980s.

The only redeeming part of this movie is the fake 80s hair band dungeon torture sequence. I like singing along with the words on screen.
