Today, BroadwayWorld is extremely proud to present an extensive conversation with the modern master of the musical theatre himself, Stephen Sondheim, all about the incredibly revealing and thoroughly riveting second volume of his complete collected and annotated lyrics covering 1981-2011 - following last years superlative Finishing The Hat - titled Look, I Made A Hat. With ample insights pertaining to the Pulitzer Prize-winning Sunday In The Park With George, Into The Woods, Road Show, The Frogs and many more, Sondheim and I also discuss some of his Hollywood endeavors - the proposed film adaptation of Into The Woods, as well as the never-produced Singing Out Loud and his Oscar-winning work for Warren Beattys Dick Tracy - and his affection for - and process of adapting in the case of West Side Story, the Cymbeline setting in The Frogs and his recent scoring of the Public Theatres production of King Lear...

Dame Judi Dench will be the star of a British school's Christmas play this year after agreeing to voice one of the characters.
Pupils at the Giggleswick School in North Yorkshire, England wrote to the Shakespeare In Love actress asking her to appear in their production, and they were stunned when Dench replied.
She agreed to record lines for the role of the giant in their production of Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods - and the students are delighted with their new co-star.
Andrew Beales, the school's foundation director, says, "(The children are) really, really thrilled. They weren't really expecting to get her to agree to do it. It will be very inspiring for the kids to step on stage with Judi's voice behind them."
The play runs from 1 December until 3 December at the school's Richard Whiteley Theatre, which has boasted Dench as a patron since 2007.

Chicago – Vincent D’Onofrio has had a career that is rich and diverse. He has worked with directors as distinct as Stanley Kubrick (”Full Metal Jacket”) and Tim Burton (”Ed Wood”), and has starred in the legendary TV franchise “Law & Order: Criminal Intent.” He presents his directorial debut, “Don’t Go in the Woods,” on November 12th in Chicago at the “Tribeca Film Festival on the Road.”
Vincent D’Onofrio began his career in the early 1980s, and quickly built an impressive resume from there. He played opposite Julia Roberts in “Dying Young” (1991), had character parts in “JFK” (1991) and “The Player” (1992), and famously played Orson Welles in “Ed Wood” (1994). He practically stole the showy film, “Men in Black” (1997) as Edgar, and portrayed Abbie Hoffman in “Steal This Movie” (2000). From 2001-2011, he also made waves on television, memorably taking on the persona of Detective Robert Goren in “Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

The 'Love and Other Drugs' actress has made no secret of her desire to have a cameo role in the musical drama series and creator Ryan Murphy has admitted he is "curious" to see what she would like to do on the programme.
He told MTV News: "I'm meeting with Anne in the next couple weeks. We're not going to do guest stars at all the first half of the season, but I would love to work with her and she supposedly has the whole thing mapped out. I'm curious as to what she wants to do. I love her. I think she's great."
Anne has previously spoken of her desire to appear in 'Glee', revealing she even has specific song ideas in mind for her character, which she would like to be the lesbian aunt of gay student Kurt Hummel - who is played by Chris Colfer.

Actresses must love Stephen Sondheim. While the composer/lyricist,who basically defined American musical theater in an era of Webbers and Schonbergs, has certainly crafted soaring, complex ballads for his male protagonists — “Being Alive” from Company and “Finishing the Hat” from Sunday in the Park with George spring to mind — it is usually his women who get the showstoppers.
And while he has created some memorable ingenues in his time, the real musical zingers are usually given to what would appear to be Sondheim’s favorite character type: an embittered and acid-tongued yet oddly sexy middle-aged vamp. Usually the character is a supporting player, such as A Little Night Music’s Charlotte or the Witch from Into the Woods. But with Follies, now in previews at the Marquis Theater in New York, it is these women who own the show and get the final bow.

In the New Group and Tectonic Theater Project’s Off-Broadway production of Tennessee Williams’ One Arm, Claybourne Elder plays Ollie, a chiseled and charming young Navy boxer, and he’s a total knockout in the role.
The 6-foot-1 out actor from Springville, Utah, pulls no punches in depicting how Ollie loses his right arm in an auto accident and then turns to a life of prostitution and prison. Based on Williams’ 1940s short story and 1967 unproduced screenplay, One Arm has been lovingly adapted into an 85-minute one-act and championed by another theatrical heavyweight: Moisés Kaufman.

In the Hit Me With Your Best Shot series we look at pre-selected movies and name what we think of as the best (or at least our favorite) shot. Anyone can play along and we link up. Next wednesday's topic is Fritz Lang's noir "The Woman in the Window".
But tonight, we celebrate Baz Luhrmann's "Spectacular! Spectacular!" which went wide on Us screens ten years ago on this very day.

We begin with a confession.
Though I was an early veritably possessed cheerleader for Moulin Rouge! since I beheld its genius on opening night at the Ziegfeld theater in NYC, though I saw it five times in the movie theater (a post '80s personal record), and though I named it Best of the Aughts when the decade wrapped, I hadn't actually sat down and watched Moulin Rouge!

Female Eye Film Festival in Toronto, Canada, is showing some brand new thrillers directed by women that you will Not have seen playing anywhere else.
High on my list of stuff to see at Female Eye is Stacie Ponder's Ludlow, which stars Viscera founder Shannon Lark, and which I watched being edited. It's screening on March 18th and is guaranteed to scare the shit out of you.
Check out the other movies, some of which are making their world premieres. I'm suprised that they shied away from using the word "horror" to describe some of these movies; drama and thriller and suspense seem to be far less offensive terms to the mainstream movie-going public. Thank God we're not the mainstream movie-going public, eh?

Last year, tunesmith Stephen Sondheim was the toast of Broadway with a theater named in his honor and a musical revue to mark his 80th birthday. This year, it is the turn of the Olivier Awards to fete him. At the March 13 ceremony, he will become the 24th recipient of the Special Award. He joins an illustrious list of previous recipients including four knights (John Gielgud, Peter Hall, Ralph Richardson, Ian McKellen); two dames (Judi Dench and Maggie Smith); and the first theatrical lord -- Laurence Olivier -- for whom these kudos are named. As part of the festivities at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, a musical tribute will be led by Adrian Lester, who won an Olivier Award for his performance in Stephen Sondheim’s "Company" in 1995. At this year's awards, last summer’s staging of Sondheim's "Into The Woods" at the Regent’s Park Open Air theatre contends with two bids.

Robert here, with my series Distant Relatives, where we look at two films, (one classic, one modern) related through theme and ask what their similarities/differences can tell us about the evolution of cinema. Please note that hereafter be Spoilers Ahead.
Three characters in search of a killer
If there’s one notable difference between the original 1969 True Grit and the Coens’ version, it’s the sense of nihilism and meaninglessness in the world the Coens create. Of course the Coens have long been the kings of nihilistic worlds, and it says something that True Grit provides one of their most meaning filled realities. Still when all is done, in the Coen version, we’re left wondering what it was all worth. The John Wayne version, which suffers in no small part from being surrounded by a sea of bleak late 60’s cinematic masterpieces, feels more like a tale of good guys an bad guys.

Screamkings Productions; the company behind such efforts as Sculpture, Frat House Massacre, Camp Daze (aka Camp Slaughter) and Lurker, is also a company that seeks out talented next generation horror directors. Enter Chris Moore who filmed Perversion. This young no budget horror filmmaker, who also doubles as an actor, has been making his own brand of horror movies and actually securing distribution for them through Screamkings Productions all before he even graduated high school! His latest effort entitled Perversion is a psycho sexual horror thriller that draws from such horror classics as Roman Polanski's Repulsion, Bob Clark's Black Christmas, with some of John Carpenter's Halloween thrown in for good measure and a bit of The Strangers. Anne Hathaway's "Glee" dream came true at the Golden Globes on Sunday, January 16 - the show's creator Ryan Murphy approached the actress and offered her a role in the hit TV series. "The Devil Wears Prada" star is a longtime fan of the all-singing, all-dancing program, and last year revealed she wants to play a long lost relative of Chris Colfer's gay character Kurt Hummel.
In an interview, she said, "In my head, I've cast myself in Glee and I know what song I'm going to sing! I would wanna play Kurt's long-lost aunt's mother's sister who is also gay, (who) comes back to help him deal with his sexuality, and I would sing You Are Not Alone from Stephen Sondheim's epic show Into the Woods."

Go to an award show, land an Academy Award nominated guest star. Last night, not only did Glee pick up multiple Golden Globes but it also scored Anne Hathaway as Kurt Hummel’s lesbian aunt.
Series creator Ryan Murphy confirmed the news to E! after the show won its second consecutive best comedy trophy. He said she pitched the guest starring role she created to them after they ran into each other and “we said, ‘Really?’ And she said, ‘Yes.’ So we’re going to do that. We love her.” Earlier in the evening, Murphy told The Hollywood Reporter exactly what role Anne had envisioned:
She wants to play Chris Colfer’s lesbian aunt. She presented the whole episode. She came up with the songs.
Ok, this is the best Glee development since Brittany praised Naya’s “sweet lady kisses.” That chance meeting between Murphy and Hathaway happened when she...

Anne Hathaway didn't win a Golden Globe on Sunday, but may have gotten something even more exciting: a self-designed guest role on 'Glee.'
The 'Love & Other Drugs' star told Jimmy Fallon in November that she wanted to guest on 'Glee,' and series co-creator Ryan Murphy met up with Hathaway and made it happen at the big awards show.
"She walked by our table and we have a mutual friend and I said, 'Do you really want to do it?' And she said, 'I do.' And I said, 'Ok, we're gonna do it,'" Murphy told Access Hollywood.
"I think we'll do it probably in a month and a half or so... I have to talk to Anne about what she wants to sing. I'm sure she has ideas," he said. "I'm excited about that."
Actually, Hathaway has more than ideas: she's got the whole thing planned out.

During the Golden Globes Awards ceremony last night, the Oscar nominated actress landed a role in the show she's been eying to guest star in since last November. While visiting Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, the Princess Diaries actress revealed her interest to play a role in the Fox series Glee, even going as far as to create the character and choose the song she would sing, “In my head, I’ve written a part for myself on ‘Glee.’… In my head I’ve cast myself on ‘Glee’ and I know what song I’d sing,” she told Jimmy “I would wanna play Kurt’s long-lost aunt, his mother’s sister who is also gay, who comes back to help him deal with his sexuality, and I would sing, ‘You Are Not Alone’ from Stephen Sondheim’s epic show ‘Into the Woods.’” This news got back to Glee co-creator and writer Ryan.

It's sounding more and more like Anne Hathaway and Chris Colfer might both get their wish.
The actress appeared on Jimmy Fallon earlier this month and talked of her desire to guest star on Glee. The 2011 Oscars co-host said:
"I wanna play Kurt’s long-lost aunt’s mother’s sister who is also gay, [who] comes back to help him deal with his sexuality, and I would sing You Are Not Alone from Steven Sondheim’s epic show Into the Woods.”
Meanwhile, Colfer is on record as saying he'd love for Julie Andrews to come on board as "Kurt's fashionable grandmother."
According to The Toronto Sun, producers are in negotiations with the Sound of Music star to do just that. She has worked with Hathaway before, on The Princess Diaries, meaning we could very well see both actresses on the same episode.

We know, "Glee" fans... you're getting kind of tired of the big-name guest stars taking screen time away from the more underused New Directions kids, like Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) and Mercedes (Amber Riley).
Despite your pleas, however, those big-name stars continue to campaign for roles on the show. Anne Hathaway, who is set to host this year's Oscars alongside James Franco, is so enthusiastic about getting a gig on "Glee" that she's already plotted out her role.
"In my head, I've cast myself in 'Glee' and I know what song I'm going to sing," the actress told Jimmy Fallon when she stopped by his show in December. "I would wanna play Kurt's long-lost aunt... who is also gay, who comes back to help him deal with his sexuality, and I would sing 'You Are Not Alone' from Stephen Sondheim's epic show 'Into the Woods.'"

I feel that before I start my review, I need to give a brief overview of Stephen Sondheim and his influence on musical theater. Sadly, I know that just by saying “musical theater,” many people have already tuned out and moved on with their lives. They should be paying attention, though. His work broke down barriers in American entertainment and made audiences rethink love, relationships, and the traditional idea of heroes and villains. If you care about film, television, comics, or any other art form, you should care about Stephen Sondheim, and Sondheim! The Birthday Concert shows just how much he has changed songwriting and storytelling.
For those who do not know Stephen Sondheim by name, it is likely that you recognize some of his work. He wrote the lyrics for West Side Story. He wrote the oft sung and parodied “Send in the Clowns” as well as “Everything’s Coming Up Roses,...

Four-time Grammy champs Green Day brought their 2004 Best Rock Album "American Idiot" to Broadway last season. While they were ineligible to contend at the Tony Awards for Best Score, the group is in contention at this year's Grammy Awards for the cast recording. Among their competition is Broadway lyricist-composer Stephen Sondheim whose shows have won this award a half dozen times ("Company," 1970; "A Little Night Music," 1973; "Sweeney Todd," 1979; "Sunday In The Park With George," 1984; "Into The Woods," 1988; and "Passion" 1994). In addition, Sondheim won Song of the Year in 1975 when Judy Collins recorded a hit version of "Send in the Clowns" from "A Little Night Music." This year, Sondheim contends for both the revival of that show led by Tony champ Catherine Zeta-Jones and the career retrospective "Sonheim on Sondheim." -Break- The other two nominees are "...

Upon hearing it for the first time when I was 7, I didn’t notice anything about Little Red Riding Hood sticking out as overtly sexy. Of course, after seeing the Looney Tunes version with the howling wolf and finding out what an “Old Woodsman” is, my vision of the story changed slightly. Now, director Catherine Hardwicke is challenging that view even further by stuffing as much sexual tension as possible into the trailer for Red Riding Hood. You had no idea that the little girl on her way to grandma’s house just needed a European-style synth track behind her, did you? I’ll never see “Into the Woods” the same way again. [Apple]...

For a man who's long been a giant in the field of musical theater, it's somewhat surprising that Stephen Sondheim hasn't been more of a feature on the big screen. Sure, there was his score for Alain Resnais' "Stavisky," a few original songs for Warren Beatty's "Dick Tracy" and co-writing the script for the cult murder mystery "The Last of Sheila," but adaptations of his work have so far been restricted to the justifiably forgotten 1977 film of "A Little Night Music," and 2007's "Sweeney Todd." Not that people haven't tried: a film of "Into The Woods" starring Billy Crystal,…...

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1" certainly had its share of great scenes (Malfoy Manor! George and Fred! The Ministry of Magic!), but with the film ending on such a cliffhanger, we can't help looking forward to all the even better scenes that we get to finally see in "Part 2." There are Horcruxes to find, motivations to reveal and bad guys to kill, and we cannot handle the wait for the next eight months. Seriously, can it be July 15, 2011, already?
That being said, we decided to honor the most magical number known to wizards and count down seven scenes we cannot wait to see in "Part 2." If you haven't read "Deathly Hallows" and/or spoiled the story for yourself already, please don't read any further because many spoilers lie ahead, and we recommend saving all the major plot points being unveiled on the big screen instead of in our list.

Anne Hathaway is a genius. And not only for her stellar performance this weekend as host for the second time on SNL, with roles like sexually active Mary Poppins, Prince William’s fiancee Kate Middleton, and an annoyingly awesome Katie Holmes.
We also thinks she's genius for her idea for an as-of-yet imaginary role on Glee.
Last week on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, the always lovely Ms. Hathaway confessed that she’d already written herself a part on Glee. She wants to be Kurt’s long-lost lesbian aunt — his mom’s sister — who comes back into his life to help him deal with his sexuality and then sings “You Are Not Alone“ from Stephen Sondheim’s Into The Woods. (In the clip below, start at chapter 3 for Anne's interview.)
Genius, right? Anne clearly spent a long time carefully crafting her character, and I think she did a heck of a job.

Anne Hathaway is so desperate to land a guest role on hit TV musical "Glee", she has already come up with her ideal role and planned out the entire episode in her mind. "The Devil Wears Prada" star admits she's a huge fan of the Ryan Murphy creation and would jump at the chance to appear alongside its leading stars Matthew Morrison and Lea Michele.

Ryan Murphy, like no one else wants to be on your show! In my head, I've cast myself in 'Glee' and I know what song I'm going to sing! I would wanna play Kurt's long-lost aunt's mother's sister who is also gay, (who) comes back to help him deal with his sexuality, and...

Anne Hathaway has written herself a part for "Glee". The actress is such a huge fan of the musical TV show she has spent hours creating her own character which she thinks writer Ryan Murphy should consider including in the series.
The character the Hollywood star has devised would be the lesbian aunt of gay student Kurt Hummel, who is played by Chris Colfer. Appearing on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" on Thursday, November 18, she revealed, "I would love to be on 'Glee'. Can I make a confession? In my head I've written a part for myself in 'Glee'!"

Hathaway isn't the only celebrity fan of Glee - Britney Spears and Gwyneth Paltrow are also regular viewers and have both made cameos in the show. Paltrow received rave reviews for her portrayal of substitute teacher Holly Holliday in an episode which aired in America on Tuesday.

If the creators of Glee can deliver us a more likable Gwyneth Paltrow and a totally coherent Britney Spears, we can only image what an Anne Hathaway Glee episode would do for the actress’ success. While on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon Thursday to promote her new film with Jake Gyllenhaal, Love & Other Drugs, Hathaway completely gleeked out, sharing her incredibly elaborate plans for a turn on the hit Fox show. Admitted a bashful Anne, “Can I make a confession? In my head I’ve written myself a part on Glee. That [sounds] so arrogant and obnoxious … in my head, I cast myself on Glee and I know what song I would sing.” Aw, only Anne Hathaway would think having a spazz attack over a high school musical show as being “arrogant,” rather than “painfully nerdy.” Explains Hathaway, “I would want to play Kurt’s long lost aunt, his mother’s sister,...

Criminal Minds is never for the faint of heart, but the combination of the bleak outdoor settings, the intensity of the child actors and, of course, the murderer remaining at large made "Into the Woods" one of the strongest episodes of the season, if not beyond that.
A child killer loose on the Appalachian Trail, which is 2,175 miles long for those keeping score, had the Bau springing into action to nab the UnSub before he kills his next victim(s).
He abducts kids and keeps them in some crudely-fashioned dungeon for months before killing them, wrapping them in a plastic bag, and leaving them in the woods to decompose.
Hope you weren't planning on eating breakfast.
Criminal Minds: Appalachian Trail edition.
Joseph Lanham, the father of Daniel, the last boy whose body was found, is an early suspect until Garcia helps uncover a pattern of other abductions up and down the trail.

The cast of "Glee" comes in at No. 3 in "Extra's" Entertainer of the Year poll!
