In Mandva village, Master Dinanath Chauhan a man of principles opposes smuggling in village by Kancha Cheena and his man. But soon he is implicated by villagers to have a relationship with a prostitute also leading to his death out of humiliation. His family is forced to leave the village, but his son Vijay Dinanath Chauhan swears that he will one day control Mandva and get respect for his father. Vijay grows up into a gangster with many rivals due to his lifestyle his mother deserts him while his sister Siksha is very close. When Vijay is attacked by his rivals, he gets saved by Krishna Iyer MA whom he keeps as bodyguard of Siksha.Vijay soon starts to eliminate his enemies one by one. Vijay Dinanath Chavan's father is implicated in a scandal and lynched by the villagers on the instigation of Kancha Cheena. Vijay, at a young age, takes on the responsibility of looking after his mother, and sister and in the process, he becomes a gangster. Sinopsis

Vijay Dinanath Chavan's (Amitabh Bachchan) father, Dinanath (Alok Nath), is a school master and a honest man who wants to bring progress to his village of Mandwa. Vijay has sister Shiksha (Neelam Kothari) & mother Suhasini (Rohini Hattangadi). Dinanath teaches Vijay to never stray from the path of truth and hard work, no matter what obstacles come in the way. Nathu (Tinnu Anand) is the village drunk, while Dinkar Rao is the resident landlord of Mandwa. Dinkar is worried that he will lose control over the village due to the progress ushered in by Dinanath.

Kancha (Danny Denzongpa) arrives in the village with the intention of buying all land to grow drugs & supply Mumbai which is close by. But Dinanath is in the way. Dinanath teaches after school classes to a prostitute. Kancha bribes the brothel madam to intoxicate Dinanath so that he is found in a compromising position with the prostitute. Dinanath is lynched by the villagers & killed.

Vijay & family leave Mandwa & come to Mumbai with Nathu. Vijay vows to return to Mandwa and gift the whole village to his mother. Vijay watches Shetty (Monty Sharma) (a rival drug lord in Mumbai) trying to assassinate Kancha & failing because of a traitor, Terelin (Sharat Saxena), in his own organization who warns Kancha. Kancha's man tries to sexually assault Suhasini & Vijay burns down his warehouse. When Shetty finds out, he releases Vijay on bail & employs him. Inspector Gaitonde (Vikram Gokhale) tries to put Vijay on the right path, but Vijay is now with Shetty. Usman (Avtar Gill) works for Shetty.

Years later Vijay (Amitabh) challenges Shetty for control. Shetty wants to get into the drugs business, but Vijay hates drugs. Vijay is a now a God to the poor people in Mumbai. Shetty and his gang shoots Vijay. Krishnan Iyer (Mithun Chakraborty) is a coconut water vendor & saves Vijay by rushing him to the hospital in his buggy. Mary (Madhvi) is the nurse & falls in love with Vijay. Krishnan again saves Vijay's life when Shetty tries to kill Vijay in hospital. Shetty and his goons enter the hospital to kill Vijay. But Krishnan had seen them enter the hospital via the ambulance and switches Vijay's body before they get to his room. Suhasini does not approve of Vijay's path & forbids Siksha from visiting Vijay in hospital.

Kancha finds that Vijay has survived the attack & invites him for dinner in Mauritius, not knowing he is the same Vijay whose father he helped to kill. Vijay kills two of Shetty's partners Usman and Hasmukh. Vijay is released from the hospital and takes control of Mumbai. Vijay then thanks Krishnan & asks him to be the bodyguard to Shiksha. Shiksha studies at an expensive college and hates the "raw" Krishnan who has been sent to protect her. When Vijay comes for dinner, Suhasini scolds him for straying from his father's path of truth. Vijay leaves without having any dinner. Vijay grows close to Mary & tells her all about his past. Vijay says that he will not end up like his father.

Vijay visits Kancha in Mauritius & agrees to form a partnership in Mandwa. Kancha kills Terelin when Terelin fails to kill Vijay before he could reach Kancha. Terelin had attacked Vijay's yacht and it exploded, yet Vijay survived. Shetty takes advantage of Vijay's absence & kidnaps Siksha. Krishnan goes to save her & holds off Shetty and his goons till Vijay arrives. Vijay kills Shetty.

Shiksha falls in love with Krishnan with Suhasini's blessings & Vijay is very upset. Suhasini says that Krishnan is her son who has agreed to marry Sakshi, as almost nobody else will due to Vijay. Vijay leaves and marries Mary. Gaitonde raids Kancha's properties & Kancha orders his killing. Vijay has a soft spot for Gaitonde & saves him by killing Kancha's men.

Vijay then traps Kancha's right hand man Dinkar in Mandwa & then pretends to help him out by loaning him Rs 50 Lakhs. Vijay gets the police to raid Dinkar's warehouse in Mandwa and now Dinkar needs Rs 5 Lakhs to bribe the police. Dinkar Rao (Goga Kapoor) responds by signing over Mandwa to Vijay.

This prompts Kancha to come to Mandwa where he finds the truth of Vijay's past. Vijay then hands Kancha over to the police. With Kancha in jail, Vijay renounces his life of crime, and returns to his mother with his wife Mary and his son. But Kancha escapes due to lack of evidence. He captures Mandwa with Suhasini, Mary, Shiksha on it. He then attacks Vijay & almost kills Krishnan. Vijay saves Krishnan's life by taking him to the hospital on his shoulders.

Krishnan & Vijay attack Mandwa & rescue the family. But Vijay is shot several times before killing Kancha. He eventually dies with his mom declaring that Vijay's path was the right one.
