Director Zack Snyder is turning his hand to mixed martial arts with Brawler, the story of a fighter who “gets a shot at a UFC championship”.

Following the grimdark space opera of his Rebel Moon movies, director Zack Snyder has announced his next project: Brawler. It’s set in the sinewy, bruising world of mixed martial arts, and will be made in conjunction with Ultimate Fighting Championship and Saudi Arabia’s Government Entertainment Authority department.

According to TheWrap, Brawler will see Snyder reunite with Kurt Johnstad and Shay Hatten, who co-wrote the Rebel Moon films with him. It’s a markedly different project for the trio, though, given how special effects heavy those sci-fi action films were. A brief synopsis reads:

1923 star Robert Patrick has been sharing some candid comments for those who have made comments about his role in the popular Taylor Sheridan show. The former Terminator 2 actor plays Sheriff William McDowell in the Yellowstone prequel, but his appearance on the show has led to some people asking if he has been wearing a “fat suit” for the role. In a blunt response, Patrick explained why he is not the slimmed-down man many people are used to seeing.

The name’s Bond — and apparently, the price tag on the franchise may have just shaken (and stirred) the executive ranks at Amazon MGM Studios. In a new industry report, it’s being widely speculated that Jennifer Salke, the former head of Amazon MGM Studios, was quietly pushed out of her role — and the final straw may have been her frosty relationship with the gatekeepers of the James Bond franchise, Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson.

Deadline is reporting that Salke's exit — which was spun as a transition to a production deal — was more akin to a firing following a series of misfires at the executive level and friction with key figures involved in the Bond franchise. The removal also comes just a few weeks after Amazon MGM reportedly shelled out an additional $1 billion for creative control over the 007 IP.

After seven years in the role, Jennifer Salke is stepping down as the head of Amazon MGM, it’s been announced. The veteran of TV – she was previously president of NBC – is instead setting up her own production company, which will have a first-look deal with her old employer.

Salke joined Amazon in 2018, right as the era of peak streaming began; only a year earlier, the company had acquired the rights to The Lord Of The Rings from the Tolkien Estate for a deal thought to be north of $1bn. Amazon then bought up Hollywood studio MGM in 2021, and Salke became the overseer of the newly-minted Amazon MGM’s film and TV output.

There are currently no plans to fill her role. Sharing the news on an internal memo (scroll to the bottom), Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios head Mike Hopkins said film and television will now operate as distinct studios, with head of film Courtenay Valenti and head of TV Vernon Sanders reporting to Hopkins. Salke joined Amazon in 2018, after a hard-fought executive search Roy Price, as the tech giant turned entertainment company was scaling up its original productions. Prior to Amazon, she served as the president of entertainment at NBC and, before that, had a long career in television with stints at 20th Century Fox and Aaron Spelling Productions. Her credits included megahits like This Is Us and Glee.

So far, the marketing behind Sony’s upcoming Anaconda has been a confusing one, signaling an adventure comedy that forgets the horror. But one of the film’s stars, Jack Black, has recently revealed that the new film hasn’t forgotten the scares after all.

Black stars alongside Paul Rudd (Death of a Unicorn) in Anaconda, arriving in theaters December 25, 2025.

“It’s a lot funnier than the original,” Black told EW, “but it does have a lot of the original vibes in terms of the scary parts. It’s a horror film for real, but it’s also got some clownin’ for sure.”

While the “clownin'” part of the equation has been evident from the beginning, it’s reassuring to hear the actor confirm that Anaconda will capture the original film’s tone and horror in some way. Just how much remains to be seen, of course, but the film is taking a meta approach.

Prime Video's Road House reboot was a major success for the streaming platform, starring Jake Gyllenhaal as Dalton, a retired UFC fighter who becomes a bouncer in the Florida Keys. The 2024 film was Prime Video's most-watched movie debut to date, as audiences were obsessed with the new take on the Patrick Swayze-led action cult classic. Thanks to its tremendous success, a sequel was quickly greenlit and Road House 2 has finally gotten an update, thanks to one of its (potentially) returning stars.

Pain don't hurt, and watching 1989's Road House won't hurt your wallet, either. Patrick Swayze stars as a philosophical, throat-ripping bouncer in this cult classic action flick. Road House is now streaming for free on Tubi. Directed by Rowdy Herrington (Striking Distance) and written by R. Lance Hill (Out for Justice), Road House was released by United Artists in the summer of 1989. It was produced by action maven Joel Silver; its soundtrack extensively features Canadian blues guitarist Jeff Healey, who also acts in the film as Cody, the bandleader at the titular road house.

Jake Gyllenhaal fans have been eating good of late; the Oscar-nominated actor starred in Road House and Presumed Innocent in 2024, the former being a remake of the classic Patrick Swayze action film, and the latter being a legal thriller/procedural series that has already been renewed for a second season. Gyllenhaal is booked and busy in 2025 as he's been confirmed to star in The Bride, the upcoming horror film written and directed by his sister Maggie Gyllenhaal that also stars Christian Bale, and he'll team up with Guy Ritchie for In the Grey, the action thriller starring Henry Cavill. Gyllenhaal has a load of movies available to watch on various streaming services, but the biggest one of all is set to deliver a major blow to Gyllenhaal's fan base in just a few weeks.

With as large a body of work as Patrick Swayze had to his name, it's sort of surprising that he wasn't in many Westerns. Is Pecos Bill real or imagined? Well, Tall Tale (sometimes called Tall Tale: The Unbelievable Adventures of Pecos Bill) offers few clear answers, but they don't matter much anyway. Patrick Swayze played a cowboy here, and the truth is that we wished he'd played a few more.

Of all the legacy sequels and remakes to spring up in the age where IP is king, the "Road House" remake was one of the most underwhelming. Jake Gyllenhaal was really the only reason to watch the anemic remake of "Road House," which arrived on Amazon's Prime Video service back in March 21, 2024 following its South by Southwest premiere earlier in the month. The big twist here is that the film is based on an original story that Shyamalan co-created with author Nicholas Sparks. Yes, the same Nicholas Sparks behind the novels A Walk to Remember and The Notebook, both of which were turned into hit films. On paper, this sounds like a strange union, but it's a bit more intriguing once you dig deeper.

Now he’s doubled down, telling Deadline in a statement that while he loved working with Brad Pitt and George Clooney he “no longer trusted [Apple] as a creative partner.”

The director behind hit films like “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” and “Edge of Tomorrow,” Liman was brought aboard MGM’s remake of the Patrick Swayze-starring cult action movie, “Road House,” in 2021, according to an announcement in Variety, with production commencing in 2022.

This new vision of “Road House” would be headlined by Jake Gyllenhaal and double-down on the intensity of the fighting seen in the original, with Liman crafting it as an event piece for theaters. However, in the midst of development on the film, MGM was acquired by Amazon, who reportedly gave Liman and the rest of the team a choice: a $60 million budget for theatrical or an $85 million budget if it went straight to streaming.

Reports say the production happily took the extra money, but public comments made by Liman in Deadline painted a different picture.
