Priscilla Pointer, Carrie and A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 Star, Dies at 100
Image
Acclaimed genre star Priscilla Pointer, known for her roles in horror movies along with Dallas, has passed away at 100-years-old.

Per Bloody Disgusting, Carrie star Priscilla Pointer passed away on April 28, just shy of her 101st birthday by three weeks. She is survived by her three children, including David Irving and Amy Irving, as well as her granddaughter, Austin Irving.

Priscilla's early career began on the stage. After making numerous appearances in the late 1940s and early '50s, including numerous Broadway appearances and tours with shows such as A Streetcar Named Desire and The Country Wife, Pointer took a reprieve from acting up until the early '70s. When Pointer returned to her craft, she did so with appearances on soap operas such as Where the Heart Is and hit television series such as Dallas, all before making her silver screen debut in 1976's Carrie.

‘Carrie,’ ‘Dream Warriors’ Actress Priscilla Pointer Has Passed Away at 100
Image
Actress Priscilla Pointer has passed away. She died in her sleep yesterday, April 28, at the age of 100 — and just three weeks shy of her 101st birthday.

She’s perhaps best known for Brian De Palma‘s Carrie, in which she played the on-screen mother to her real daughter, Amy Irving.

Her other horror roles include A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, Blue Velvet, Twilight Zone: The Movie, and C.H.U.D. II: Bud the Chud.

Outside the genre, she had notable appearances in “Dallas,” Mommie Dearest, The Falcon and the Snowman, Looking for Mr. Goodbar, and “The Flash.”

Pointer also co-founded the San Francisco Actor’s Workshop in 1952.

Priscilla Pointer of Carrie, Dallas, and A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 has passed away at age 100
Image
Born in New York City on May 18, 1924, Priscilla Pointer made her screen acting debut in 1954 and, over the course of a career that lasted 60 years, went on to rack up more than 90 other credits. Sadly, trades like The Hollywood Reporter have broken the news today that Pointer passed away in an assisted living facility in Ridgefield, Connecticut on April 28, 2025 at the age of 100, just twenty days shy of her 101st birthday.

Pointer’s first acting credit came on the 1954 TV show The New Adventures of China Smith. For years, she turned her focus to the stage, working with her first husband, Jules Irving, at the San Francisco Actor’s Workshop and the Repertory Theater of Lincoln Center. Then, she returned to the screen with an episode of N.Y.P.D. in 1969. From there, she would appear in such films and TV shows as The High Chaparral, Death Takes a Holiday, McCloud, Adam 12,...

C.H.U.D. II: Bud the C.H.U.D. (1989) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
The first C.H.U.D became a culturally relevant movie for multiple reasons and against all odds also worked its way into the greater pop culture zeitgeist. I argued that the first movie doesn’t quite stand the test of time a bit ago and while I stand by that, it doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy it either. C.H.U.D. II: Bud the C.H.U.D. is a wild ride of a sequel that certainly didn’t need to exist but is somehow more fun than the predecessor. Its also a better sequel in a franchise that it doesn’t technically exist in! Can’t wait to get into that aspect. Most of you love C.H.U.D. but I’m here to tell you why C.H.U.D. II is a great black sheep that straddles the end of the 80s and start to the 90s. I doubt I’ll sway anyone onto my side of...

It’s Alive III: Island of the Alive (1987) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
Larry Cohen isn’t really a horror guy, at least not in the same vein as his contemporary filmmakers like Wes Craven, John Carpenter, or Tobe Hooper. Cohen wasn’t even really the same type of director as he wrote almost 3 times as many projects as he directed. What he lacked in quantity for horror movies though, he more than made up for in quality. This quality started with 1974’s It’s Alive and moved through very different types of horror like God Told Me To, The Stuff, and Q the Winged Serpent. The only series of movies he was involved in was his trilogy of It’s Alive movies. While the first two were heavy hitters in terms of themes that were hidden under the guise of creature features, the third one had far less to say but is unfairly seen as less fun. 1987 was a weird year for the man,...

C.H.U.D.: John Goodman looks back on his time working with the cannibalistic humanoids
Image
2024 marks the 40th anniversary of the creature feature C.H.U.D. (watch it Here), which is best remembered for its title – which stands for Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers – and for its cast, which included John Heard, Daniel Stern, Christopher Curry, and Kim Griest, with appearances by Jon Polito, Jay Thomas, and John Goodman. To celebrate C.H.U.D.‘s big anniversary, the folks at Dread Central decided to ask Goodman about the film – and found that he was quite happy to reminisce about his experience working with the cannibalistic humanoids!

Goodman said, “I am definitely in C.H.U.D. I’m from St. Louis and I moved to New York in ’75 to do theater and I wanted to do film. I knew if I didn’t go and try to do films, I would kick myself for the rest of my life. C.H.U.D. was made by a lot of the guys I was...

‘C.H.U.D. II: Bud the Chud’ Blu-ray Review (Vestron Video)
Stars: Brian Robbins, Bill Calvert, Tricia Leigh Fisher, Gerrit Graham, Robert Vaughn | Written by M. Kane Jeeves | Directed by David K. Irving

A wave of pure VHS-era nostalgia – with all the associated benefits and drawbacks – awaits in this 1989 sequel to the 1984 B-movie, which was itself a solidly silly monster movie with a great cast (John Heard, Daniel Stern, Kim Greist et al) and charmingly lousy special effects.

This time, the inner city setting is gone in favour of a typical Midwest small town, and the Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers are about to run amok at the teenagers’ Halloween Dance. Not that the CHUDs spend any time underground this time around. As the flimsy franchise leans hard into farce, any semblance of the original film’s social satire is forgotten in favour of smart-ass quips and fish-out-of-water comedy.

The amusingly implausible plot sees buddies Steve (Brian Robbins) and Kevin (Bill Calvert...

Lionsgate launch Vestron Collectors Series in UK
If you’ve been keeping any eye on the BBFC website this news won’t come as that much of a surprise… However, Lionsgate UK have officially announced today the launch of the Vestron Collectors Series line of Blu-rays here in the UK! Yes, no longer will you have to fork over £30-40 to import the well-received Vestron Blus, instead you can get them right here in Blighty. The catch? It looks, at least from this announcement, that we won’t be getting All the Vestron titles – after all, there’s no Waxwork 2 included on the UK Blu.

From the press release:

Restored and remastered, this Unrated Version has never been on Blu-ray!

Review: “Bobbie Jo And The Outlaw” (1976) Starring Marjoe Gortner, Lynda Carter And Jesse Vint; Kino Lorber Blu-ray
By Ernie Magnotta

There’s nothing I like better than getting hold of a movie that I’ve been searching over three decades for and adding it to my collection. At my age, there aren’t many vintage films left that I don’t own in one format or another, so when I heard that the 1976 cult classic Bobbie Jo and the Outlaw was getting a Blu-ray release, I was quite enthused. This movie has somehow always managed to elude me. It never seemed to play on any of my cable stations in the early 80s, we never had a copy of it at the video store I worked at in the mid-80s and I was still never able to find a copy of it anywhere throughout the 90s. To be honest, by the time the 21st century hit, I completely forgotten about this movie, so I was pretty...

Blu-ray Review: Return Of The Living Dead 3 Vestron Video Collector’s Series
Given just how lousy with zombies our current pop culture climate has become over the last decade or so, it’s hard to remember that the walking dead were out of favor as recently as the 1990s. The decade had a few bright spots (Peter Jackson’s Dead Alive, aka Braindead is a stone-cold classic, as is Michele Soavi’s Dellamorte Dellamore, aka Cemetery Man), but on the whole there weren’t a lot of memorable zombie movies coming out of the Clinton decade. Well, along comes the new Vestron Video Collector’s Series Blu-ray of Brian Yuzna’s Return of the Living Dead 3 to remind us that at least one more terrific zombie movie did come out in the ’90s, but many horror fans slept on it. Hopefully that changes now.

Pretty much a sequel in name only, 1993’s Return of the Living Dead 3 bears almost no...

Blu-ray Review: C.H.U.D. II: Bud The Chud Vestron Video Collector’s Series
Not all C.H.U.D. are created equal.

Within weeks of Arrow Video’s special edition Blu-ray of the original C.H.U.D.—still the best movie ever made about New York’s homeless being transformed by toxic waste into cannibalistic humanoid underground dwellers—Lionsgate’s new(ish) Vestron Video Collector’s Series adds its 1989 sequel, C.H.U.D. II: Bud the Chud, to its growing library of collectible Blu-rays. The completist in me is happy to have both available in the best possible format. The supportive horror fan in me is happy for the film’s fans, who finally get to put a high-def version of a movie they adore on their shelves. The movie lover in me would be perfectly okay not seeing it again.

C.H.U.D. II: Bud the Chud is what Fred Dekker’s Night of the Creeps might be if it weren’t any good.

The Best Of Number Two – The Devil’s Rejects By Alex Divincenzo
Hello, and welcome to The Best Of Number Two here at The Liberal Dead. We haven’t done any kind of theme for a long time, so I thought I would reach out to some some talented people from other sites, and see if we can put something together. I decided it would be a theme about the best second films in a franchise/series. Expect discussion about Metamorhosis: The Alien Factor, The Devil’s Rejects, C.H.U.D. II, Blade II, Sleepaway Camp II, Amityville 2, Island of the Fishmen, The Dark Knight, Final Destination 2, House II and more.

Rob Zombie is a polarizing filmmaker, to say the least. Love him or hate him, you cannot deny is his ambition. The longtime musician made his feature directorial debut with House of 1000 Corpses. Although filmed in 2000, the movie didn’t hit theaters until 2003. Corpses fell victim to many issues that first-time directors face,...

When you ask most people which film it was that brought about the comic book film renaissance that has taken over movie theaters for the past almost 15 years, the response you get is 2000’s “X-Men” film by Bryan Singer. You ask me, though? I’ll give you two answers, both of which...

The Best Of Number Two – Metamorphosis: The Alien Factor – By Shawn Francis
Hello, and welcome to The Best Of Number Two here at The Liberal Dead. We haven’t done any kind of theme for a long time, so I thought I would reach out to some some talented people from other sites, and see if we can put something together. I decided it would be a theme about the best second films in a franchise/series. Expect discussion about Metamorhosis: The Alien Factor, The Devil’s Rejects, C.H.U.D. II, Blade II, Sleepaway Camp II, Amityville 2, Island of the Fishmen, The Dark Knight, Final Destination 2, House II and more.

MoreHorror Exclusive Interview with World Famous Special Effects Artist Greg Nicotero
by Michael Pickle, MoreHorror.com

For all our MoreHorror readers recovering from the tryptophan induced stupor we call Thanksgiving, boy do we have a treat for you. What better way to celebrate the recent release of the Evil Dead II: 25th Anniversary Edition on Blu-ray than to talk to the man behind the special effects and some of the most amazing visuals in horror movie history: the legendary Greg Nicotero.

If you've seen little productions like Day of the Dead, In the Mouth of Madness, From Dusk 'Til Dawn, Scream, The Cell, Masters of Horror, The Mist and most recently The Walking Dead than you are very familiar with his enormous body of work. I was fortunate enough to chat with the man who literally changed the face of horror before he had to run off to celebrate turkey day.

It was impossible to get to all the...

The 10 finest sewers of B-movie cinema
Sooner or later, all monsters end up hiding in a sewer. Here’s our list of 10 particularly fine B-movie drainage systems…

If you were a hideous monster mutated by toxic waste or radiation, where would you hide? In the warmth of a garden shed? In the car stereo section of Halfords, perhaps? Of course you wouldn’t. Instead, you’d scuttle straight for the nearest sewer, where you can hide safely in the darkness and trickling effluent.

If B-movie cinema is to be believed, the tunnels beneath our streets are positively teeming with all manner of cannibalistic monsters and hideously outsized prehistoric lizards. This list, therefore, is all about the fine sewer systems of B-picture cinema, where some of mankind’s greatest fears lurk…

Them! (1954)

The classic noir thrillers He Walked By Night (1948) and The Third Man (1949) were probably the first movies to set foot in a sewer, but they...

Junk Food Dinner Podcast: Episode #70
Never before has so much flesh been devoured on single podcast! Episode #70 of Junk Food Dinner is here with more zombies and cannibals than you can shake a stick at!

Up first, we revisit everyone's favorite Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers, only this time, they're just zombies, in the goofy sequel C.H.U.D. II: Bud the C.H.U.D. from 1989 starring Gerrit Graham, Brian Robbins, Tricia Leigh Fisher and Mr. Roper himself, Norman Fell.

Then, a group of soldiers stationed in the Sierra Nevada Mountains during the Mexican-American War, quickly turn on one another as cannibalism is introduced to the group in the often overlooked 1999 period thriller Ravenous starring Guy Pearce, Robert Carlyle, Jeffrey Jones and David Arquette.

And finally, two valley girls survive the apocalypse only to be hunted by evil scientists, thuggish marauders and of course, zombies in the excellent 1984 horror-comedy Night of the Comet starring Catherine Mary Stewart,...
