It’s almost shocking that nobody made a live-action Pokémon movie considering the card game’s heyday was back in the 1990s while the anime and video games still ruled kids’ televisions. That’s not to say the property ever disappeared. Nintendo couldn’t have turned “Pokémon Go” into an international smartphone phenomenon without strong brand recognition spanning multiple generations. But what was there to lean on narratively? The creatures themselves can’t say anything but their names and the human characters are kids trying to catch them in the wild to then battle a la the cards. While you could get away with something as simple as that, there wouldn’t be the type of lasting power necessary for box office glory. For that you would need a hook—something Detective Pikachu provides.
The game’s first mini iteration arrived in Japan circa 2016 with the full product hitting shelves last year.

The CW will house Jason Voorhees' new slasher adventures, as it announces development of the upcoming Friday The 13th TV series...
So, Friday The 13th is getting a TV show. We’ve known that for a while. Today we learned that The CW network is developing the new version, and that the show has been described as ‘a drama series based on the long-running feature franchise.’
Does that mean it’s a remake, then? Not a sequel like Damien or a prequel like Hannibal or Bates Motel? At the moment, it’s not entirely clear, but the description has few clues.
According to Deadline (who broke the news), the Friday The 13th series ‘reimagines the masked Jason with a stronger feel of grounded reality. Described as a sophisticated, horror/crime thriller, [...] about the ongoing quest of a detective’s search for his missing brother that is somehow tied to Jason Voorhees,...

The first week of July sees a ton of genre titles headed home on DVD and Blu-ray including a handful of cult classics including Stuart Gordon’s Robot Jox, The Crimson Cult which co-stars Boris Karloff and Christopher Lee, Luigi Cozzi’s Contamination, a pair of 1974 shockers- Deranged and Spasmo- as well as The Killers, which is based on Ernest Hemingway’s chilling tale of the same name and gave the film noir subgenre a boost back in the 1940’s.

In a future that’s been devastated by a nuclear war, major conflicts are settled between two opponents, one fighting for the Market and the other for the Confederation. The twist: each warrior fights from the cockpit of a massive robot, similar in part to Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim. Robot Jox, the sci-fi flick from Re-Animator director Stuart Gordon, will make its Blu-ray debut next summer via Scream Factory.
From Scream Factory: “Our month-long “Shocktober” celebration continues with another film to reveal. We veer more into sci-fi territory this time: 1989’s Robot Jox (helmed by legendary From Beyond and Dolls Director Stuart Gordon) will make its debut on the Blu-ray format in Summer 2015! No other details to report at this time.
We still have a few more surprise reveals between now and Halloween so keep checking back here on the page to be the first to see them.

I was hoping for my debut on Cinelinx would be a soft one. A movie review, a new comic book series, something light that would not rattle anyone's birdcage until I became established. Unfortunately, due to recent events, all I can say is "out of the frying pan..."

So the news is Fox has cancelled Almost Human after just one season. As of this writing, there are forecasts showing a spike in demand for torches and pitchfolks. Two words everyone: Calm down.
The Fox Network, and other broadcast channels, does indeed have a long reputation for not giving attention to well-written science fiction shows. We only need to reference the laundry list of shows on the other online forums (Firefly being at the top of the list). It has also been addressed that television is really becoming more dumbed-down each year with the glut of “reality” TV shows (trust me,...

Jonathan Brandis hanged himself 10 years ago this week (November 12, 2003) at Sixth and Detroit in Los Angeles, in the second-floor hallway of an apartment building south of Hollywood near a decent doughnut shop and a cat groomer. He was 27 years old. And he was my first big crush. If you're picturing him in your head, you're imagining him young. Brandis began modeling at 2, scored a soap opera gig at 6, and by 10 was a TV regular with guest appearances on Alien Nation, Who's the Boss?, Blossom, L.A. Law, Full House, The Wonder Years and Murder, She Wrote. He was 16 when he made Ladybugs, 17 when he was cast as teen genius Lucas Wolenczak in Steven Spielberg's seaQuest 2032. With Pacific Rim on the horizon, what better time to look back at the 1989 giant robot flick, Robot Jox...
Soon, cinemas everywhere will unleash the giant robot warriors of Guillermo del Toro’s vivid imagination with Pacific Rim, due to open in July. And from what we’ve glimpsed so far in its trailers, boy are these babies going to rock. But this isn’t the first time we’ve seen humans pilot giant mecha in the movies - back in 1989, director Stuart Gordon brought us the cult spectacular, Robot Jox.
Snow blows across a barren Siberian wasteland and a howling wind can be heard. Aside from a few scattered trees, the desolate landscape is strewn with huge broken, burnt out metal body parts. Suddenly another severed limb - this one looks like an arm - crashes to the ground, sparks still flying where...

While the TV community mourns the passing of Robert Hegyes, who played Juan Epstein on the 1970s sitcom "Welcome Back, Kotter," we thought it might be interesting to see what all the other Sweathogs as well as Mr. Kotter are up to these days. Here's an update:
John Travolta (Vinnie Barbarino) - After some lean years in the 1980s, Travolta's career rocketed back following his role as Vincent Vega in the 1994 film "Pulp Fiction," and he hasn't looked back since. Subsequent films included "Face/Off," "Get Shorty" and "Wild Hogs." He's very much an A-lister.
Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs (Freddie "Boom Boom" Washington) - Known for his over enunciation "Hey, Mister Kot-taire," Hilton-Jacobs' character was the star on Buchanan High's basketball team. Since the series left the air in 1979, he's had a slew of guest starring roles in TV series from "Hill Street Blues" to "Roseanne" to "Chuck." His longest stint was on the show "Alien Nation.

V (2009) The Complete First Season Blu-Ray Warner Bros. Home Entertainment2009-2010/Not Rated/520 minsList Price: $49.99 – Now AvailableV is so 1983, isn't it? I actually have fond memories of Kenneth Johnson's sci-fi miniseries which aired in two installments between '83 and '84. It was almost as if someone had taken the old Twilight Zone episode To Serve Man (based on a short story by Damon Knight) and adapted it into a television epic. For an eight-year-old kid, the series was both scary and hokey at the same time. Scary every time a Visitor's true nature was revealed and hokey after I realized how poor the visual f/x make-up was. Didn't really matter because back in the eighties, there weren't too many exciting shows on TV with such large production values especially in the sci-fi genre. Plus, who could beat the sexiness of Jane Badler as Diana, Commander of the Visitors?...

The Films:
Shout! Factory is releasing plenty of Roger Corman titles (mostly produced) via these Double Feature DVD releases, and this time they pair up two lesser known titles from the late 1980s/early 1990s period, certainly a long time after his producing heyday of finer sci-fi/horror films. Both films collected here, The Terror Within (1989) and Dead Space (1990) have a common link of being Alien-copycats.
First, The Terror Within. This film is pretty fun, despite it’s odd amalgamation of Mad Max, Alien, and the film Alien copied from, It! The Terror from Outer Space. We’re really left in the dark about the origin of the film’s setting. You see, our protagonists are in an underground bunker, seeking survivors from something that eradicated Earth’s population, andwhen the find a survivor – she could be the cure! – there’s something just not right. Yeah, same old same old,...

In new that pleases me greatly (what? I’m a fan of this Canadian iteration of the series), Universal Studios Home Entertainment have announced the Us release of Airwolf – Season 4, the much-maligned final season of the TV show that was shot on video in Canada after the original stars left the series.
Airwolf – Season 4 stars Barry Van Dyke (Diagnosis: Murder) as the long-missing brother of Jan Michael Vincent’s character, Michele Scarabelli (TV’s Alien Nation), Geraint Wyn Davies (24, Forever Knight), Anthony Sherwood (Street Legal) and in a recurring role William B. Davis (The X-Files).
Airwolf – Season 4 is released on Region 1 DVD on February 1st 2011.

We talk with Kelly Parks, screenwriter of the Universal Dead web series, soon to be a feature film.
We took notice of the zombie web series Universal Dead because of the strong production value and cast. When Universal Dead announced they were going to be turned into into a feature film with Paramount distributing, we had to talk with screenwriter Kelly Parks, who describes himself as "America's only ex-cia rocket scientist stand-up comic screenwriter."
Kelly was kind enough to answer some of our questions via email.
Haz: How did this project start and what was your background before Universal Dead?
Kelly Parks: My business partners (Vernon Mortensen and Neil Trusso) and I are lifelong zombie movie fans so of course we had to do something zombie related. I came up with an idea based on my personal theory about how zombies might work and I wrote that as a...

Web series are often the passion projects of those who create them and can become a reflection of their backgrounds and talents. After all, the adage is "write what you know". So imagine what kind of web series would come out of someone whose short bio is "I am America's only ex-cia, rocket scientist, stand-up-comic screenwriter. No, really." It'd probably look something like Universal Dead. Reminiscent of the classic zombie storytelling of George Romano, the series opens on a breathtaking helicopter view of a ravaged landscape. We quickly learn that the planet is consumed by a strange disease that turns people into mindless murderers. A small team of Us Navy SEALs must protect a doctor from the Center for Disease Control on a mission to evaluate the claims of an erratic scientist who may have discovered the secret to mankind's salvation. Let's go back a second: this show opens with a Helicopter Shot.

Death is universal. And so are zombies, apparently, and they’re currently everywhere, including the Interwebs. Check out the first two episodes of Kelly Parks’s ongoing web series “Universal Dead”, directed by Vernon Mortensen and starring Doug Jones (“Hellboy”), D.B. Sweeney (“24″), Gary Graham (“Alien Nation”), and a bunch of badass former Navy SEALs playing badass Navy SEALs. Both episodes total about 10 minutes, so it’s a pretty easy sit-through. Not a whole lot of action, though, which is disappointing. I’m not entirely sure where they’re going from here, but hopefully the SEALs will get more face time. Horror fanatics are still buzzing like chainsaws over the Academy Awards’ genre montage. Anywhere there could be a conversation about it online, there was one. Many were upset over the Twilight ‘tweens’ participation, as if their mere presence sent a message about the state of scary in Hollyweird, USA.
A few seemed happy, though, to just get a glimpse of their beloved Evil Dead and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 if only for a few seconds. But many called the selections generic and thoughtless, demanding the likes of Demons and TerrorVision instead (well, maybe not TerrorVision; that was just me).
How about Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer? Re-Animator? It’s Alive? Tombs of the Blind Dead? Coffin Joe? No list is perfect, but with a bit more care and a phone call to any one of us, the Oscars could have elevated that section into a real scream. Or maybe they...

Where other people spend their time making videoblog shows, pop culture parodies, and three-minute sitcoms, Jeff Varga wants to bring something serious to the world of web television. It could be said that Jeff Varga has a vision for web television - and that vision involves fascist Australian zombies and hot women shooting the holy hell out of each other in Sin City-inspired noir streets. In other words, that vision is Dead End City, and the fifteen-minute pilot episode is out for public consumption. Gary Graham of Alien Nation and Star Trek: Enterprise plays Murphy, a gritty hustler who spends his life dodging bullets and aiming at beautiful women. While avoiding some thugs at a local watering hole ("The Dragon Lady"), a chance encounter puts him in possession of a mysterious elephant figurine - and in the sights of Scarza (Matthew Nicolau), an Australian fascist with a fresh bullet hole in the forehead.
