After his parents are killed, Mahesh's life is ruined as he gets imprisoned and separated from Mohini, who suffers due to her cruel father. Mahesh returns to save Mohini and settle old scores.

From a very early age Mahesh Deshmukh has dreams of serving his country; his encouragement and dreams multiplies when his parents are killed by a gang of robbers who plan to loot the bank they are employed in. He then joins the Indian armed forces whereby he excel in the services he honestly provide to his country. During his college days he gets to meet his fellow collegian, Mohini who wholeheartedly love him and after placing a bet with his friends over her he then began to love her whereby he manages to convince her of his love. Mohini's father Shyamlal is an alcoholic and wants her to dance and take up prostitution as her profession so that she can be able to provide money for his daily share of alcohol. This does not anger well with Mahesh who decides to put a stop to this only to find himself at loggerheads with Shyamlal who takes the help of a gangster, Lotiya Pathan to frame Mahesh, gets him arrested, charged and outcast by law from the city of Bombay for a period of a year. This then transform the simple-minded lad who has dreams for his country into the city's most dreaded gangster, Munna whose only motive in life is revenge.—gavin (racktoo@hotmail.com)

Munna a criminal who is asked to stay away from the city limits of Bombay comes to know from his sister that his love Mohini has been kidnapped by his rival gangster Lotya Pathan.Munna enters the city much before the time and plans to attack Lotya Pathan's den with Baban and his other friends and free Mohini.Mohini was kidnapped while doing a stage the incident cost loss of many lives.Inspector Gagan Singh is assigned to investigate the case.Gagan Singh also finds that Munna has entered city limits much before time and is shocked to know that Munna is indeed Mahesh Deshmukh a youngster who once was willing to die for his country.Gagan Singh traces Munna and asks him to surrender but is more eager to know what made Mahesh Deshmukh turn into criminal Munna.—alex.mjacko@gmail.com

Mahesh Deshmukh (Anil Kapoor) has joined the nation's armed forces as that he can honestly and patriotically serve the country. During his college days he has a run-in with fellow-collegian Mohini (Madhuri Dixit). A bet between his friends and himself ends up with him falling in love with Mohini, who subsequently realizes that he indeed has fallen in love with her, and she too reciprocates. Mohini's dad (Anupam Kher) is an alcoholic and wishes that Mohini takes up dancing and prostitution so that he can get his daily dose of alchol. Mohini attempts to take refuge with Mahesh, however, cirumstances tangle Mahesh to such an extent that he is arrested, charged, and sentenced to stay away from Bombay city limits. When Mahesh returns, it is no longer the honest, and patriotic Mahesh, but a gangster named Munna, who has many old scores to settle.—rAjOo (gunwanti@hotmail.com)

When Inspector Singh (Suresh Oberoi) learns that a man, Munna is about to reach his region of jurisdiction, he checks Munna's record. Singh recognizes Munna as Mahesh Deshmukh and is astounded how he became Munna.

In a flashback, Mahesh "Munna" Deshmukh wanted to be a navy officer & serve the country. His dad Namrish (Achyut Potdar) & mom used to work in a bank in Nasik and Inspector Gagan was posted there. Mahesh had won a NCC trophy and was at the bank to show his parents, and Inspector Gagan was there for some official work. A gang of robbers hit the bank and Mahesh's parents are killed in the ensuing gunfight. Mahesh helps Inspector Gagan to kill the robbers, one of whom if captured alive.

Following the bank incident, Inspector Singh finds Mahesh, rekindles their connection, and inquires as to his whereabouts. Mahesh (Anil Kapoor) reveals that he and his sister have relocated to Bombay. Mahesh took a job at boat club as a swimming instructor. During his college days he has a run-in with fellow-collegian Mohini (Madhuri Dixit). Mahesh saves Mohini's life when she comes to learn swimming at the boat club. Mahesh's friends are Baban, Guldasta (Annu Kapoor) who runs a tea stall and wants to be a singer, Kainchee (Johnny Lever), Chiraunji (Vijay Patkar) and Aman Pratap Ahuja (Jaywant Wadkar).

Mahesh and Mohini study in the same college and his friends bet Mahesh to make a girl fall in love with him. He selects Mohini, and then proceeds to give attention to Mohini's rival Nikita (Mandakini) to make Mohini jealous. His antics work as Mohini falls for Mahesh, but then finds him bragging to his friends about "scoring" with her.

Mahesh is embarrassed and tells Mohini that he really loves her and can even die for her. When Mohini dismisses him, Mahesh jumps from the roof of his college, sustaining severe injuries. Mahesh and Mohini fall in love with each other.

Mohini's dad Shyamlaal (Anupam Kher) is an alcoholic and wishes that she takes up dancing and prostitution so that he can get his daily dose of alcohol. Shyamlaal does not want to marry Mohini off. He acted similarly against his wife Sumira (Suhas Joshi), and when she disobeyed him, he attacked her with acid, resulting in her committing suicide.

Shyamlaal is borrowing heavily against the promise of Mohini performing on stage. One of his creditors is Lotiya Pathan (Kiran Kumar), who is demanding the money that he loaned Shyamlaal.

Mohini attempts to take refuge with Mahesh. Lotiya's brother Chote Khan was captured by Mahesh in the bank robbery case. Lotiya finds out that Mohini's Mahesh is the same guy who put Chote in jail.

Chote captures Mahesh's sister Jyoti (Suparna Anand) & tries to force himself upon her. Mohini finds this via Shyamlal & alerts Mahesh who kills Chote to rescue Jyoti. In court Mahesh is labeled a killer & given a 1-year sentence. His career & dreams of joining the navy are ruined. Mahesh asks his friend Sushim "Baban" Choudhry (Chunky Pandey) to take care of Jyoti & he saves her from Lotiya by tipping the police about Lotiya's businesses, which put Lotiya on the run.

When Mahesh is released, he comes to rescue Mohini, but Shyamlal uses corrupt cop Tarachand Gupta (Mahavir Shah) to frame Mahesh in a house robbery case & gets him Tadipaar from Mumbai for another 1 year.

1 year later, Shyamlaal owes money to gangster Lotiya Pathan which he can't repay. Shyamlaal threatens the show organizer Rantej Saxena (Tej Sapru) that he will not send Mohini for the show unless he pays Rs 50,000. Saxena agrees and asks Shyamlaal to bring Mohini. While Mohini performs the show, he engages Shyamlaal in drinks and when the show is over, he throws Shyamlaal out without the money.

As Shyamlaal is unable to pay Lotiya, he kidnaps Mohini. Jyoti sends a telegram to Mahesh & begs him to come & rescue Mohini. Mahesh is now a local don named Munna who is the modern Robin Hood. Munna collects protection money from his illegal businesses, but also saves the poor people from being harassed by goons and gangs from outside.

Munna returns to Bombay but seems a changed man. Munna meets Jyoti who tells him about how Lotiya has kidnapped Mohini. He approaches Shyamlaal & offers to rescue Mohini from Lotiya for Rs 50,000. Shyamlaal refuses, but Saxena offers to pay the money as he wants to marry Mohini. Munna connects with his old gang and together they plan to rescue Mohini.

Munna is met by Gagan Singh on his way to confront Lotiya. Learning Munna's backstory Gagan allows Munna to complete his mission with the promise that he will surrender to Gagan after he rescue Mohini.

After a ruckus Munna & Baban rescue Mohini & then Munna pushes Mohini away & reveals that he has rescued her only for money. Although they are happy to reunite, Munna asks her to return to her father, leaving Mohini heartbroken. But in reality, Munna wants to keep Mohini away simply because now he is a wanted criminal & can't give Mohini a decent life. As promised Munna surrenders to Gagan.

Inspector Gagan is moved by Munna's plight & confronts the corrupt cop who framed Munna. He makes the corrupt cop confess his crime to the court to have Munna released from judicial custody. He also gets Munna a job in Goa to start a new life.

However, Jyoti convinces him not to abandon his love for Mohini. Munna sends his friends Guldasta and Baban to inform Mohini of his whereabouts. Mohini realizes Munna's sacrifice & goes to meet him. Shyamlal, overhearing Mohini's plans to escape, becomes enraged and attempts to stop her. In the ensuing conflict, Guldasta and Shyamlal are both killed, but Mohini manages to escape and reunites with Munna.

Meanwhile, Lotiya, enraged by Munna's acquittal, plans to kill him to avenge his brother's death. Munna's friend Baban learns of Lotiya's conspiracy and confronts him, leading to a fierce fight where Lotiya is defeated. In a moment of rage, Baban attempts to kill Lotiya, but Munna intervenes to prevent the murder.

Lotiya regains his strength and attacks Munna with a club. Baban sacrifices himself to protect Munna. Munna then confronts Lotiya and is about to kill him when Inspector Singh arrives and stops him, urging Munna not to take the law into his own hands. However, when Lotiya attempts another attack on Munna, Inspector Singh shoots and kills him, bringing the conflict to an end.
