good fun movie

Conrad looks great for his age at that tine in this movie and its almost believable that a guy inhis early fifties could play with kids. Well if pro quarterbacks in this day and age can play the NFL in their fourties ,its not at all unbelievable that a talented 50 year old guy in great shape could play college football. Anyway if you are middle aged this is the movie that will make you feel a lot better .Conrad is likable and the story doesnt turn into too serious ,is always with tongue slightly in cheek. I enjoyed this and recommend it to anyone interested in this sort of movie.

Ego, thy name is Robert Conrad

If you want to see what a true vanity piece is, and if you can somehow find this little gem you are in for a treat.See the undersized, yet unstoppable, 53 year old Robert Conrad, this films director AND star, make the football team. See him, through a stunning turn of events, make it to first string. Event though he has the throwing style of every computer nerd kid you ever made fun of in high school,. Robert Conrad is smarter tougher, and better than anyone else in the world. Just ask him..he will tell you, through the medium of a tv movie. Not only this, he is a succesful businessman, great student, and has a bigger heart than a bull elephant. See Conrad single handedly rescue a decaying football program, save the coaches job and bring huge amounts of money to the school. Finally there is the world famous Conrad sex appeal,in full display here. Watch the gorgeous young college coed decide that Conrads intensity and athletic prowess are just what her little hormones ordered. In the end learn about the most amazing Conrad feat of all, his honor, as he turns down a nubile young thing in order to preserve the sanctity of his blessed marriage. This movie is a comedy of hubris and self love that this planet has not see since the ancient Greek myths of Narcissus. Thank you Robert Conrad for showing the world what true macho is. Even if it is wrapped in a tiny little non-athletic package.

He retired way too early.

Warning: Spoilers
Only in his 50's, chain hardware store magnate Robert Conrad is giving it all up, and for what? To sit at home doing nothing, making omelettes for a wife and daughter who are too busy with their own career and education to stay home for a few minutes and enjoy it. So what does Conrad decide to do to pass the time? Go back to school and join the college football team, that's what. Oh, and as a freshman, he's forced to wear a beanie. I don't think any college in 1988 forced any freshman, let alone a 50 something year old man, to wear a stupid beanie.

A most ridiculous premise for a TV movie, this gives Conrad a big ego boost with a silly script that is more embarrassing than funny, a desperate attempt for exposure that comes back to bite him on the football field, the big fumble of all fumbles. The supporting cast seems to be trying to suppress a smirk, happy to be working, but obviously aware of the silliness of the film. Of course, Conrad's TV movie wife seems more than a decade younger, and has no chemistry with him. This certainly deserves its place in TV movie obscurity, and Conrad fans are better off sticking with reruns of "The Wild Wild West".
