- Gangaa Jamunaa and Saraswathi the most pious rivers, create a unique holy merger, popularly known as "Sangam". Likewise the characters of our story Gangaa Jamunaa and Saraswathi desire to meet and merge in love of each other. Gangaa Jamunaa begin to love each other and pledge to become one, Saraswati silently loves Gangaa, and dedicates her life to him. However there are many, who would like to separate the happy lovers. There is Hansraj, who does it, and with the result Jamuna separates from Gangaa. Jamuna reaches Shanker's home, Shanker who already loved her becomes extremely happy finding Jamuna in his home. In the meantime Saraswati was about to come closer to Ganga. When Hansraj, who had earlier swindled the property of Ganga's father by illegal means wanted to get rid of the rightful owner Ganga, he got Ganga shot. - Gangaa's (Amitabh Bachchan) father is murdered by his uncle, Thakur Hansraj Singh (Amrish Puri). His property is usurped, and he and his mother are rendered homeless. He vows vengeance. Years later, as an adult, Ganga meets and falls in love with Jamunaa (Meenakshi Sheshadri). Shankar (Mithun Chakraborty), also meets Jamunaa and falls in love with her, after having a run in with Thakur Singh. A nauch girl, Saraswathi (Jaya Pradha), falls in love with Gangaa too, who saved her from Thakur's son. The movie is about the series of events that prevent Gangaa from being with Jamunaa,the series of misunderstandings between friends, and the evil attempting to thwart all their lives.—L. Y. - Fed up of his oppression and criminal activities, Thakur Hansraj Singh is approached by his brother-in-law who has him killed and later on tricked his sister, Bharati Devi into signing their property documents into his name after which he eventually throws them out. - Cruel and sadistic Thakur Hansraj kills his brother-in-law, and throws his own sister out of the family home. The sister swears to avenge this insult and the death of her husband. So her son, Gangaa, grows up to fulfill his mother's wish.
