Sex & Nudity

  • Incest, rape, and societal views of women and virginity all play a major role in the plot. There are three lengthy scenes with full frontal and rear female nudity, several shorter views of breasts, and a brief view of a man's butt.
  • A long scene of Beatrice rearranging furniture with continuous full frontal and full rear nudity.
  • A minute-and-a-half long scene of full frontal nudity as Beatrice washes her pubic region.
  • Another scene with full frontal and rear nudity with Beatrice in a dialog with her father.
  • Brief views: A woman's breasts and a man's butt, as two lovers are interrupted; breasts, as Beatrice rises from bed, and separately as she bathes; the side of a woman's butt during a rape; other women's breasts, generally not consensually.
  • A wetnurse's breast is visible for a while, not actively feeding. Later it's visible for several seconds, then she feeds a hungry adult briefly.
  • A young boy is stripped of his wet clothes and dried off. Brief side and fleeting frontal nudity.
  • Several women are commanded to strip a man and have sex with him to punish him. We only see his chest exposed; sex is implied only.
  • A man is forced to wear a dress as a punishment. Twice, men describe sex with a prostitute in mild terms.
  • A boy reaches inside his pants, to check that his "willy" hasn't been stolen.

Violence & Gore

  • Violence is pervasive, and ranges from slapping to rape to murder, some of it perverse, with some blood visible at times.
  • There are several scenes of a man raping various women. No nudity and limited thrusting, in some events. In one event the side of the woman's butt is exposed. In one event an older man forces a younger man to rape a woman. Another woman states that several men ravished her. Several women are commanded to strip a man and have sex with him to punish him.
  • We hear and see someone screaming, tied to a stake, as flames grow below.
  • Two hanged children are seen. Their faces are visible but not grotesque.
  • A boy stabs a man to death, the wound not shown but a bloody dagger visible for a moment. A villager is stabbed, mostly offscreen. A hamlet of houses is torched. A man runs into a burning building, intending suicide. People are stabbed, whipped, beaten, kicked viciously, shoved around, and intimidated, often without apparent cause, sometimes in revenge.
  • Men steal a woman from another estate.
  • An eagle is shot with an arrow, we see it trembling and then its corpse carried away. This appears to be unsimulated. Other dead birds are seen, with some blood.
  • References: Men returned from war mention combatants being trampled by horses and pierced by arrows.
  • A child is seen with extensively bloody legs.
  • Milder violence: A man's head is slammed into a plate of food. A woman slaps a girl's face. Someone falls off a horse but seems uninjured. Punishments imposed include being forced to fast for several days, and scouring one's tongue with nettles
  • Milder gore: A woman evacuates her nostrils into a platter being held for that purpose. We hear of bowels leaking out into a pool of stinking excrement. Several people eat stew from a common bowl using their fingers. A woman drools spit into an infant's mouth for lack of other food.

Profanity

  • Hardly any, as English subtitled. "Damned", "arse", and "shit" once or twice, "whore" several times, "wenches" both simply meaning "women" and also in a derogatory sense. One reference to "a wandering Jew."

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • None. No smoking or other drugs. If any drinks were alcoholic, it was neither mentioned nor implied, and no one acted drunk.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Constant abuse by the lord of the manor (Beatrice's father) is disturbing. Many of the scenes of violence or gore are intense and unexpected or seemingly irrational. Treatment of, and attitudes toward, women, are disturbing.
  • Other potentially distressing scenes include several of hungry-to-starving children, one of them eating silage; a man's lengthy, loud, wailing laments and thrashing; the mention of corpses being thrown overboard; and skulls of animals hanging as decorations.
