In 1992, the now acclaimed director Roland Emmerich, alongside action superstars Jean Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren, created Universal Soldier. A movie that was maybe under-appreciated in the golden age of action films but nonetheless a highlight in all of their careers. Regardless, financial issues loomed for the studio that created it. This resulted in rights being sold and two mostly horrendous television movies being released on Showtime starring Gary Busey and Burt Reynolds. Seven years later, in 1999, the franchise would attempt its big screen comeback with the legendary Jean Claude Van Damme desperate for a career win on a project no director seemed willing to touch. Would the result be a resurrection of not only the franchise but its leading man’s once unstoppable career? Or one of the final nails in the coffin of both of their big screen futures? This is What Happened to Universal Soldier: The Return.

Reba McEntire is opening up about her romance with actor Rex Linn, describing their relationship as “the perfect union,” even if they do “argue a lot” more these days. The Queen of Country, who hosts the 60th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards tonight (May 8) on Prime Video, spoke with Fox News Digital on the red carpet for the star-studded ceremony, where she was asked about what makes her relationship with the Young Sheldon star work. “Well, Rex and I get along in every aspect,” McEntire said. “He’s a better cook than I am, so I like that, for sure. We love Longhorns, we love the cowboy way of life, cowgirl way of life, and we both got into the entertainment industry.” Linn played Principal Tom Petersen on The Big Bang Theory spinoff between 2017 and 2024. He’s also known for his roles in CSI: Miami, Better Call Saul, Lethal Weapon,...

1987’s Lethal Weapon is arriving on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in June: more details on the new release right this way.
Warner Bros continues to mine its back catalogue of titles really rather well, and also support physical media too. The latest case in point: Richard Donner’s 1987 favourite Lethal Weapon is heading to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, and it’s just gone up for preorder.
There are gaps in the information at the moment. No release date has been announced yet, although the expectation now is that the film will be landing this side of the summer. Furthermore, it’s unclear if we’re getting any fresh extra features either. We are getting both the theatrical and the director’s cut of the film, though.
And we are definitely getting the original Lethal Weapon on the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format for the first time. So far, the Steelbook edition is available to order.

The Paddy’s Pub Gang of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia isn’t known for admitting when they’re wrong, but that doesn’t mean that Mac, Charlie, Dennis, Dee and Frank are completely unreasonable when it comes time for a mea culpa — reason will prevail.
At its heart, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is about the bonds of friendship and family. Sure, those friendships are toxic and typically abusive, and, yeah, the family is only slightly less dysfunctional than the Beverly Hills Menendez one. But like any great sitcom, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia features interesting characters who have compelling relationships to one another, even if they’re constantly scamming, berating, assaulting and igniting each other. And, as anyone who has been married for a few decades or shared a living space with their sociopathic crush for the same amount of time will tell you, the secret to...

It can’t be denied that as far as martial arts movies go, the best ones come from Asia, particularly Hong Kong during their action heyday, which was arguably the 70s, 80s and first half of the ’90s. It’s tough to compete with the likes of the Shaw Brothers and the drunken master known as Jackie Chan. That said, martial arts movies were also making a foothold in the States decades ago, thanks mainly to Bruce Lee-mania following the release of Enter the Dragon. Before that movie, very few actors in Hollywood seemed like they were credible martial artists, except maybe James Coburn, a student of Lee’s, who pulled off some pretty good-looking moves in the otherwise silly Our Man Flint movies. Steve McQueen also had training but didn’t use martial arts on screen. Up to then, though, the most notable uses of martial arts in movies usually revolved around Judo,...

Rob McElhenney’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has gained a reputation for pushing boundaries, often venturing into unconventional territories, especially for a sitcom. Few moments exemplify this more than the episode in which the characters apply blackface to a baby in a misguided scheme to make money.
Widely regarded as one of the worst episodes in the long-running sitcom, it has stirred significant criticism. However, McElhenney, fully aware of the controversy, chose to revisit the same provocative trope in later episodes, further cementing the show’s reputation for courting outrage.

Judd Apatow russles up Glen Powell for an untitled comedy about a country Western singer in freefall

Boy howdy! Glen Powell and Judd Apatow are hitching a ride aboard the same horse for an untitled original comedy at Universal. The project finds Powell returning to his laptop to pen the script with Apatow and play the lead.
The untitled comedy finds Glen Powell playing a country Western star in free fall, with Apatow getting behind the camera to direct. In addition to directing, Apatow produces through his Apatow Productions label, which has a deal at Universal, where the film is setting up camp. Has there ever been an actor more underappreciated than Kurt Russell? Sure, he's produced his fair share of stinkers throughout a career spanning more than six decades -- see 2006's "Poseidon" -- but more often than not, the man delivers. Yet, Russell had never earned an Academy Award nomination and too frequently gets treated like a glorified character actor than a genuine A-lister, despite appearing in some of the most beloved motion pictures of our time.
Perhaps Russell cemented his seclusion from Hollywood's top tier after teaming up with director John Carpenter to produce films like "Escape From New York" and "Big Trouble in Little China," films that, for all intense purposes, are essentially big-budget riffs on the classic B-movies of the 1950s and 1960s. Or maybe his rugged good looks and roguish charm weren't enough to contend with the likes of Harrison Ford, Denzel Washington, Tom Cruise, or Tom Hanks.

The world of HBO's "The Last of Us" TV show is incredibly bleak. Not only did civilization as we know it end with a fungal infection that effectively turned people into zombies (just don't call them that), but society is now split into countless factions — many of them violent, cannibalistic, or authoritarian. Still, the worst part is that the HBO show placed the Cordyceps apocalypse in the year 2003 (as opposed to 2013). This means that people in "The Last of Us" missed out on seeing the Rohirrim charge at Pelennor Fields in "Return of the King" in theaters, and never saw "Revenge of the Sith." (Having "Attack of the Clones" be the last "Star Wars" movie people were able to see is rather depressing.) In that universe, "Lost" never changed television forever, and audiences missed out on "Fullmetal Alchemist," "Howl's Moving Castle," and the masterpiece that is "Hunter x Hunter." "Halo 2" never came out,...

Director James Hawes delves into, and clarifies, the comparisons that have popped up between the upcoming DC series Lanterns and the hit HBO series True Detective. When James Gunn first announced his Dcu plan for what he called Chapter 1 - Gods and Monsters, he pitched Lanterns as being like True Detective. It certainly isn't hard to see where that comparison comes from, as Lanterns is being sold as a buddy cop series where the cops, here intergalactic police officers, investigate a mystery crime in the American heartland.
James Hawes, who serves as director for the first two episodes of Lanterns, dug into the tonal inspiration for the series while promoting his latest film, The Amateur. Hawes told The Hollywood Reporter that the series has some similarities to True Detective, but the series and characters have a bit more humor to them than True Detective. Bruce Willis has made a career out of playing men who look like they haven’t slept since the late ‘80s, and The Last Boy Scout is no exception. Released in 1991, this action-packed, expletive-riddled, buddy-cop-adjacent flick directed by Tony Scott and written by Shane Black was basically Die Hard‘s rowdier, more foul-mouthed cousin. And yet, despite its A-list talent and explosive action, it somehow ended up as one of the most overlooked gems of the early ‘90s.

Actor Mel Gibson’s gun rights will be restored following a ruling by the U.S. Justice Department.
Gibson had his gun rights revoked in 2011 when he was charged with a misdemeanor domestic violence conviction, which involved an altercation with his then-girlfriend and their child in 2010.
The Trump Administration intervened to help Gibson, a close friend of the president. On March 7, former U.S. pardon attorney Elizabeth G. Oyer was terminated for refusing to recommend the request.
Federal law bans all those with felony convictions and most individuals with domestic violence charges from possessing firearms.
The Lethal Weapon star pleaded no contest in a deal with prosecutors that kept him out of prison.
As part of the 2011 plea deal, he spent three years on probation, underwent one year of domestic violence counseling and performed 16 hours of community service.

This April marks the publication of the third edition of one of the best books ever written on directing, Bethany Rooney and Mary Lou Belli‘s “Directors Tell the Story.” A comprehensive guide to the hundreds of aesthetic, managerial, and logistical problems a director faces every day on set and how best to solve them, its strength comes from the position of authority from which Rooney and Belli write — between them, they’ve got over 75 years of experience on set as episodic television directors.
Rooney alone has hundreds of hours of television on her resume thanks to a career that stretches back to 1985 and her big break on the medical drama “St. Elsewhere.” Since then, she has worked in virtually every genre imaginable, from comic book shows (“Arrow”) and teen dramas to action, horror, procedurals, and dramedies.

It can’t be denied that in the eighties and nineties, the action movies coming out of Hong Kong revolutionized the industry. Marrying the kinetic style of seventies grid house martial arts epics with the technological innovations and kinetic energy of the best American action movies of the era, directors like John Woo, Tsui Hark and Ringo Lam, and stars like Jackie Chan and Chow Yun-Fat made a huge mark internationally. In the mid-nineties, and in the face of Hong Kong’s 1997 handover to China, many of the biggest names from the scene found their way to America, and outside of Jackie Chan and John Woo, arguably the most successful transition was made by martial arts superstar Jet Li.
A former member of the Bejing Wushu team, Li’s arguably became the biggest martial arts movie star since Bruce Lee. Sure, Jackie Chan movies maybe made more money, but they,...

It was just this past January that Lethal Weapon star and Braveheart director Mel Gibson was saying he hoped to start filming the sequel to his smash hit The Passion of the Christ sometime next year. In a surprising status update, it looks as if the new film, The Resurrection of the Christ, will actually start much sooner than previously thought. Deadline is reporting that the CEO of Rome’s historic Cinecittà Studios, Manuela Cacciamani, has confirmed that Gibson’s biblical epic starts shooting at the lot this summer.
Cacciamani had revealed the bit of information in an interview with Italian newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore. She let it slip that the film is due to start filming this August. Cacciamani stated, “I can confirm that the next film directed by Mel Gibson, produced by Icon Productions, The Resurrection of Christ, will be shot entirely in Cinecittà starting in August and...

Oscar-winning filmmaker and Lethal Weapon star Mel Gibson will resurrect Christ this summer. The controversial actor and director, who has slowly wormed his way back into the upper echelons of Hollywood over the last few years, will reportedly make his long-gestating The Passion of the Christ sequel, The Resurrection of the Christ, later this year, with the biblical epic follow-up to “start shooting in August at Rome’s Cinecittà Studios,” CEO Manuela Cacciamani has revealed.
As per a report by Variety, producer and CEO of Cinecittà Studios Manuela Cacciamani revealed that The Resurrection of the Christ has now “set an August start-of-shoot date” for the sequel, which will be helmed by Mel Gibson under Icon Productions.
The outlet also cites several sources of their own, who have revealed that The Passion of the Christ 2 “will have a summer 2025 production start,” with “Cinecittà’s sprawling new Studio 22 facility will serve...

We know some of these dangling loose ends would eventually come into play.
In true fashion for this series, The Rookie Season 7 Episode 11 marked the return of Monica, and she’s no longer this redheaded mastermind in the wind plotting from afar without our knowledge.
She’s planning something big and forcing people to work for her under duress to wreak havoc.
(Disney/Mike Taing) The Rookie Had Fun Playing Homage to Speed
The hour played homage to one of my all-time favorite movies: Speed.
Sure, it had its cheesy moments throughout, but it was a fun watch for the most part. While there were some anti-climatic moments in the entire bomb hostage event, the payoff was related to Tully and Monica.
The hour allowed all of The Rookie’s ladies to be badass, and isn’t that what we love most about them?

Get ready to bust Dixie! Soon, you’ll be able to bring Riggs and Murtaugh home to meet the family as Warner Bros. is releasing a new crisp ultra-high-def transfer of the 1987 Richard Donner classic Lethal Weapon. Last year, Warner Bros. announced the release of the buddy cop pop culture staple along with other studio titles. The original street date looks to have changed as Blu-ray.com is reporting that the new 4K physical media transfer of Lethal Weapon will now be hitting retailers on April 29. The film catapulted Shane Black as his script for this film was a hot property in Hollywood. The movie stars Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Gary Busey, Mitchell Ryan, and Tom Atkins.
The description reads,
“Following the death of his wife, Los Angeles police detective Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) becomes reckless and suicidal. When he is reassigned and partnered with Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover), Riggs...

There has been a sequel in development for Gavin O’Connor’s The Accountant since the original film’s release and moderate success. In the nine years since the first film’s release, no one has exactly been clamoring for The Accountant 2, but this sequel is charming enough to win over audiences looking for an entertaining B-action picture with an A-list scale.
The Accountant 2 Review
The Accountant 2 sees Ben Affleck’s money launderer and assassin called out of his peaceful retirement when he has to investigate the death of a close friend and how it might connect to a missing person’s case and a human trafficking ring. Bill Dubuque’s script feels generic in such a way that it almost feels as if it could have been a spec script that retroactively had the characters from the first film added to it.

Buddy cop movies are a staple of the action-comedy genre, pairing mismatched partners who must overcome their differences to chase down criminals. Director Richard Donner's Lethal Weapon series is well-known for popularizing the buddy-cop genre, as Mel Gibson's reckless cop and Danny Glover's by-the-book officer made for plenty of mishaps and over-the-top action sequences. The 1980s/90s franchise went on to inspire a new wave of buddy cop films, including Rush Hour, Bad Boys, and Shanghai Noon.
More recently, the genre has evolved with hits like 21 Jump Street, The Other Guys, The Heat, and The Nice Guys. Among the modern entries in the genre, Ride Along carved out its own space thanks to the comedic energy of Kevin Hart, which paired hilariously with Ice Cube's stoic intensity. With a $154 million global box office haul, Ride Along became a surprise hit, setting the stage for its 2016 sequel.

Directors Robert Olsen and Dan Berk are well known to horror fans for smart, scary, and sometimes quite funny thrillers like “Body,” “Villains,” and “Significant Other.” With their latest film, “Novocaine,” the precise and expressive visual style of those early films remains, but the genre is new: The story of a mild-mannered banker (Jack Quaid) on a quest to save his kidnapped new girlfriend (Amber Midthunder) is a full-on action movie packed with exhilarating set pieces.
For Berk and Olsen, getting the chance to play in Richard Donner and John McTiernan’s sandbox was a long-held dream finally realized.
“We’ve wanted to make an action movie for a very long time, but it’s really hard early in your career,” Berk told IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “No one’s going to give you the 20-plus-million dollars you need to make an action movie for your first feature.”

Mark Wahlberg stars in Shane Black’s first film in seven years, the upcoming Play Dirty. Surprisingly, it’s getting an R rating.
Writer, producer, director and sometime actor Shane Black has left a potent mark on modern cinema, not least directing Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and The Nice Guys. Furthermore, has a $1bn hit to his name with Iron Man 3, and his screenplays for the likes of Lethal Weapon and The Last Boy Scout are quite something to do.

Tina Louise was starring on Broadway with Carol Burnett when producers approached her about a part in a new sitcom. “The CBS casting director Ethel Winant called me at the theater, ‘Do you think you could play this Lucille Ball/Marilyn Monroe-type of character?’” the 91-year-old actress told Forbes. “I said yes.”
The Lucy-meets-Marilyn character was Ginger Grant, the “movie star” who was shouted out in the opening credits of Gilligan’s Island. That character description was enough to make Louise ditch Broadway, but she was in for a rude awakening when she arrived on set. “I got there and the director wanted it to be a more sarcastic kind of character,” she said. “And so, then I didn’t even want to work on it anymore. I told him I wanted to quit.”

"Gilligan's Island" only aired for three seasons on CBS, but it became a rerun sensation when it hit syndication after getting canceled in 1967. Kids in the market for a relentlessly silly sitcom to watch after school while they were neglecting their homework and chores couldn't do better than this aggressively formulaic show about seven castaways shipwrecked on an uncharted island somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. Just about every episode revolved around the characters' inevitably thwarted attempts to return to civilization, and this familiarity bred nary a hint of contempt.
The key reason the show never got old for its undemanding target audience was the cast. Bob Denver (Gilligan), Alan Hale Jr. (Skipper), Jim Backus (Thurston Howe), Natalie Schafer (Lovie Howe), Russell Johnson (Professor Roy Hinkley), Dawn Wells (Mary Ann), and Tina Louise (Ginger) formed a perfectly balanced ensemble that understood precisely what was expected of them. You couldn't imagine anyone else playing these roles.

The cast of "Star Trek: The Original Series" had an endearing ability to laugh at themselves. It wasn't just about the sense of levity that often existed on the bridge of the Starship Enterprise; it was the actors' willingness to be goofy and play broadly for laughs. Even a performer as seemingly stiff as William Shatner could loosen up and act the fool when a scene called for it. This capacity to clown was on full display when the crew traveled back in time to 1986 San Francisco to kidnap a couple of humpback whales in "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home"; watching Spock learn to curse, Bones react in horror to the state of 20th century medicine, and Kirk put the moves on Catherine Hicks' cetologist made us howl because it was so clear the cast was having a wonderful time.

A Predator movie directed by Shane Black, written by him and the director of The Monster Squad. This sounded like the recipe for an awesome sci-fi action horror film, but what Black delivered was one of the least popular films in the Predator franchise, with a third act that was completely different from what was originally written and a variety of bad ideas being filmed as potential endings. Critics were unimpressed. Fans were disappointed. And now, we’re going to dig into what happened to The Predator.

His friend, director Fred Dekker, brought their script for the creature feature The Monster Squad to the screen, creating a film that is now considered to be a cult classic.
