Fizzy comedy-thriller Drive-Away Dolls has been turned into a political bellwether – but why are we still seeing sex and inclusivity as controversial?
Is Drive-Away Dolls a political film?
On the surface, it tries very hard not to be. Set in 1999, the film finds two lesbian best friends embarking on a road trip pursued by hapless criminals and wall-mounted dildos. The opening scene sees a character stabbed in the neck with a corkscrew; later, in the words of the BBFC, “a woman appears to masturbate a man in order to take a plaster cast mould of his penis”. A chirpy, air-headed slice of east coast Americana, politics seems to be the last thing Drive-Away Dolls is thinking about.
But ask the film’s director, Ethan Coen, and the answer is more complex than you might expect.

Amidst the acclaim that The Godfather received from all fronts, there was one influential critic of the movie — Frank Sinatra. The beef between Sinatra and the film began even before the start of filming. The singer and actor believed that one character in Mario Puzo’s novel, that of Johnny Fontaine, was modeled after him. On one occasion, Sinatra had a heated confrontation about this with Puzo where he threatened the author.
Marlon Brando as Vito Corleone in The Godfather
However, his threats on another occasion did not seem to bother singer Al Martino, who played the brief role of Johnny Fontaine in the film. In the end, all the efforts of Frank Sinatra to ruin The Godfather became futile as the movie became the biggest hit in Hollywood upon release.

The last full weekend of February was another dour and dreary time at the box office as none of the three new wide releases made much of a mark. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Despite the release of three new movies, Paramount’s biopic, “Bob Marley: One Love,” starring Kingsley Ben-Adir and Lashana Lynch, remained atop the box office despite a fairly large 53% drop from Presidents Day weekend. It took first place with an estimated $13.5 million, bringing its domestic total to $71.2 million. Over the weekend, it hit $100 million globally in less than two weeks of release, adding another $15 million internationally for a global total of $120.6 million.
Opening in 1,949 theaters, Crunchyroll’s Anime “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – To The Hashira Training” was actually a combination of episodes from the previous season of the series and a preview of the upcoming season. It gave fans a first...

Ok, I’ve thought about this long and hard, discussed with my local priest and therapist, and after much internal strife, I’ve decided it’s time. You hear a lot about rip-offs for franchises, particularly the big ones. We have Jaws rip-offs, Exorcist rip-offs, Halloween rip-offs, and more. What you don’t hear a lot about, and good lord do they exist, are the multiple rip-offs of Gremlins. Gremlins got its own incredible sequel and then finally this year its very own animated show that is… fine… it’s fine. But with Gremlins profitability came the clones. How many millions of records have you sold? If you're Jessica Simpson, that number is well over 20 million. If you're not Jessica Simpson — and you're not, like, Elton John or one of those guys from Aerosmith — that number is probably a heck of a lot less. At the turn of the century, thanks to hit singles like "I Wanna Love You Forever" and her reality TV series "Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica," Jessica Simpson was one of the most famous human beings in the entire world. And she's still really darned famous.
And like most singers who break into the popular zeitgeist, Simpson has also tried her hand at acting. She's probably best known on the big screen for playing the role of Daisy Duke in the 2005 "Dukes of Hazzard" movie, or at least for her cover of "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'" from the soundtrack. In the middle of a dark night that is filled with terror, Jordan and Cornelia are on the run from the law in a spooky Andalusian desert town. They are mere teens, but they are accused of something as vicious as murder. That’s the primary hook of Prime’s latest Spanish-language horror series Romancero, which debuted on Friday. The miniseries is a blend of many subgenres of both horror and thriller and is a very interesting watch overall. However, it tells the story in such a manner that, eighty percent of the time, you are trying to figure out what exactly is going on. It is like solving a puzzle, where you have been given all the necessary clues and have to figure things out by yourself. Of course, it does explain the main thing by the end, but a lot of it is left for interpretation by the audience.

Ghoulies is not the Gremlins rip-off its reputation suggests. The two films were in production at the same time, but budgetary issues delayed the release of Ghoulies. Although it likely benefited from Gremlins‘ success, the similarities begin and end with diminutive monsters. Ghoulies II actually shares more in common with Gremlins, as the first Ghoulies leans more — arguably too much — into the fantasy realm.

When Martin Scorsese set to work making "Hugo," a film based on Brian Selznick's children's book "The Invention of Hugo Cabret," it immediately got tongues wagging. What on Earth was the director behind films like "Taxi Driver," "Goodfellas," and "The Departed" doing helming a whimsical kids' adventure? At the time, his youngest daughter, Francesca (who's now internet famous for the Tiktok videos she makes with her old man), was only a preteen "We always joke around, my wife saying, 'Make a film your kid can see for once,'" Scorsese told THR. He added that it wasn't the only reason he made the film, "but it did help."
The point is, sometimes filmmakers just want to make a film their kids can watch. Such was the case for Stuart Gordon back in the late 1980s. The late multi-hyphenate had burst onto the horror scene earlier that decade thanks to...

Margaret Qualley Leads a Lesbian, Action-Packed Road Trip in Ethan Coen’s ‘Drive-Away Dolls’ Trailer
Margaret Qualley and the Drive-Away Dolls has an excellent ring to it. On Friday, Focus Features released the official trailer for the Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke-written film that follows Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan playing a pair of queer women as some not-so-smart criminals (including Matt Damon) chase them. The film is out Sept. 22.
“I’ve had it with love and I don’t believe it’s relevant to the 21st-century lesbian,” says Margaret Qualley’s Jamie after a lesbian club scene, before viewers are introduced to Marian, who...

The Return to Horror High episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? was Written by Emilie Black, Narrated by Travis Hopson, Edited by Victoria Verduzco, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
The 1980s, especially the mid-1980s, were basically the heyday of slasher films, many of them were being released each year in theaters and direct-to-video, some of them making huge box office numbers like the Nightmare on Elm Street movies, the Friday the 13th movies, and the Halloween movies. Non-franchise films were not as big both financially and critically but they didn’t do too badly either. Then came Return to Horror High in 1987 (watch it Here). Some would say that the film was ahead of its time, being a very meta horror comedy about slasher films, having endings within endings, and twisting the sub-genre on its head. However, the film failed,...

The Castle Freak episode of Best Horror Movie You Never Saw was Written by Cody Hamman, Narrated by Jason Hewlett, Edited by Paul Bookstaber, Produced by John Fallon and Tyler Nichols, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Stuart Gordon directed some of the best, most popular H.P. Lovecraft adaptations ever made, starting with the 1985 classic Re-Animator. A decade after making that movie, he returned to Lovecraft to tell a much darker, even nastier story. The story of a hideous man who has lived an awful life of confinement and torture. And when he escapes, a bloodbath ensues. It’s the story of a man known as the Castle Freak – and it’s The Best Horror Movie You Never Saw.
Stuart Gordon and producer Charles Band established their working relationship during the filming of Re-Animator. The project benefited from the production facilities of Band’s company Empire Pictures, and Empire was the distributor.

“I hate dolls,” writer-director Lagueria Davis states early in her debut documentary “Black Barbie.” By turns a celebration and an interrogation (sometime both simultaneously), the film delves into the history of the titular Black doll Mattel released in 1980. That was 31 years after the first Barbie began her rise to becoming the most iconic, uncomfortably influential, doll in American history. Davis makes a jam-packed argument that the road to Barbie diversity and inclusion has been long and marked by detours, intersections and, maybe a dead end or two. Davis’ first-person, inflected journey — often witty, often weighty — will lead her to a reconsideration of her antipathy (which she attributed to being a tomboy). Her reason for this rethink is personal — and adorable.
In 1953, Legueria’s aunt Beulah Mae Mitchell made her way from Forth Worth, Texas, to Los Angeles. She landed a job at Mattel in 1955. She left in 1999. Archival photos of...

There are a good few ways to dramatise Michael Jordan’s landmark $2.5m sponsorship deal with Nike. One is telling the story of a young basketball rookie on the brink of legend status. Another is telling the story of his mother, Deloris Jordan, who refused to see her son exploited by corporate America. Air, Ben Affleck’s Eighties-set sports drama, chooses a third option: to platform the boardroom of largely white marketing men who successfully transformed a human being into a corporate slogan. It’s the least compelling perspective imaginable.
The success of Air depends on how willing audiences are to discard Jordan as a person in favour of Jordan as an idea. This is an individual even the film refers to as the “greatest competitive athlete in history” – but who does not speak, or even appear beyond the occasional glimpse of the back of his head (or that of...

The wild career of David Johansen — New York Dolls frontman, punk gadabout, occasional actor, and Buster Poindexter portrayer — will be the focus of an upcoming documentary co-directed by Martin Scorsese.
Personality Crisis: One Night Only, premiering April 14 on Showtime, captures Johansen as he staged his pre-Covid cabaret performances at New York’s Cafe Carlyle in January 2020. Throughout the shows — which featured Johansen revisiting his own catalog as his alter ego Poindexter — the singer also regaled the audience with stories about his time as a fixture on the New York City music scene.

Scherzinger and Evans began dating after Evans appeared on The X Factor: Celebrity in 2019 where Scherzinger served as a judge. Evans appeared as a member of a boy band named Try Star with a couple of his fellow rugby players.

Bella Poarch was stunning in a short pink dress for her “villain era,” complete with her hair done up to resemble horns. The Filipino-American singer and social media personality claimed sudden fame through a video of herself lip-syncing to M to the B by Millie B.
The floral pink dress included a hot pink flower patten and a black ruffled neckline that allowed Bella’s chest tattoo to pair beautifully with the dress. The long sleeves of the dress seamlessly turned into lovely fitted gloves, and further accentuated the “villainous” glamour.

Hearing the phrase “debut release from a TikTok star” doesn’t often inspire confidence in what’s about to follow, but Bella Poarch, who posted a lip-syncing clip of herself in the summer of 2020 that remains TikTok’s most-viewed video to this day, has gone her own way for her debut EP, Dolls. Poarch’s debut single, the Danny Elfman-in-emoji flip-off “Build a Bitch,” laid the groundwork for the 25-year-old’s aesthetic; it combines insouciant, pop-culture-referencing lyrics with a lip-sync-ready chorus and kiddie-music detailing, and it drives home its...

Bella Poarch knows she’s bad news — but in her hypnotic new single “Living Hell,” the viral superstar just can’t manage to keep someone she’s hurt at bay.
The Andrew Donoho-directed clip finds Poarch trapped inside a seemingly nondescript house teeming with paranormal activity — clothing suspended in air, an eerie little girl inside a mirror, psychokinetic forces — as she pleads with a lover to stay away and stop pursuing their relationship. “I can make your life a living hell if I wanted to,” she coos on the song’s chorus.

Monica Vitti, the Italian star of Michelangelo Antonioni’s film masterpieces, including his trilogy “L’avventura,” “La Notte” and “L’Eclisse,” has died. She was 90.
Vitti’s death was announced by Walter Veltroni, a former film critic and mayor of Rome, who said that her partner of many years Roberto Russo asked him to communicate the news.
“Roberto Russo, [her] partner of all these years, asks me to communicate that Monica Vitti is no longer there. I do it with pain, affection, regret,” Veltroni wrote in a tweet.
In Antonioni’s 1960 art-house classic “L’avventura,” Vitti portrayed a woman searching for her best friend along with her friend’s lover after she goes missing on a boating trip. The film and her performance is a moody, detached masterpiece that would define art-house cinema worldwide in the ’60s and made her an international star, even landing Vitti a BAFTA nomination.

For over 30 years, "Child's Play" creator Don Mancini has been the beating, bleeding heart behind horror's favorite possessed plastic pal, and the first season of the TV series named for the demented doll successfully takes Mancini's canon of seven films and blends them all together in a cacophony of all things "Chucky." Mancini has consistently stayed true to his vision, and the "Child's Play" franchise has evolved from a traditional slasher, to high-camp concepts that only work if the audience completely buys into Mancini's unique brand of horror which includes split personalities, cults, terrorizing children, offensive one-liners, and an army of killer dolls.

Of course, horror is well known for having killer puppets. Depending on how you define ‘puppet’, there’s been Chucky, Annabelle, Jigsaw and others in films like Poltergeist, Krampus and Dolls. Puppet Killer is the first I remember to feature a fluffy pink puppet though.
Hat puppet and it’s owner are big horror movie fans though and so obviously end up in a cabin in the woods with a murderer (guess who) out to kill the group of friends staying there. It’s predictable but it’s supposed to be. This is a movie clearly made by people who like their old school horror movies, and as this one is a comedy, they have some fun with it and the usual horror movie clichés.

“The Masked Singer” saw a shocking shake-up on episode 3, which aired on March 24. The four remaining contestants in Group A — Porcupine (who styles himself as Robopine), Raccoon, Russian Dolls and Seashell — were surprised when Orca surfaced at the end of the episode. He sang so well that the four judges opted to give the boot to Raccoon instead. He was unmasked by guest host Niecy Nash as actor Danny Trejo, star of the “Machete” movies.
The Group A contestants first performed on the season 5 premiere on March 10. Porcupine, Raccoon, Russian Dolls and Seashell impressed the judges enough to move on in the competition. Child’s Play has a lot to answer for… actually scratch that. The killer doll cliche in horror films goes back a lot further than that , in fact it goes all the way back to the 1930s with The Devil-Doll. Since then there have been a myriad of killer doll (or killer toy to be more precise) films – culminating in the late 80s renaissance and films like Child’s Play, Dolls, Puppet Master, Dolly Dearest; hell, even the Silent Night, Deadly Night franchise switched to killer toys for its fifth instalment in 1991.. The idea of dolls and toys coming to life and attacking their owners is one that still instills fear in audiences. If the films are done right that is.
And Benny Loves You is done very, Very,...
