When the X-Men debuted in the pages of Marvel Comics back in 1963, their superhero costumes looked a little more like school uniforms. The team at the time was made up of the characters Cyclops, Ice Man, Beast, Marvel Girl, and Angel, and they all wore a notable yellow-and-blue ensemble with hoods to partially cover their faces. "The Uncanny X-Men" also allowed creators Stan Lee and Jack Kirby to skip over the bothersome task of having to invent a superhero origin story. Rather than a tale of cosmic rays, gamma radiation, spider-bites, or some other powers-granting conceit, the X-Men were merely born with their abilities. They are mutants.
When the X-Men universe expanded to include more and more characters, the blue-and-yellow ensembles gave way to a wide variety of outlandish costumes, each one adhering to the styles of the day. Those who read X-Men comics in the 1990s, for instance,...

Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens may not have made cameos in the final season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, but the Disney+ mockumentary still gave us an update about their characters’ relationship status — whether we wanted to hear it or not.

Will Smith is regarded as one of, if not the most successful rapper-turned-actor in cinema. Other artists like Queen Latifah and L.L. Cool J were also willing to carve out an acting career for themselves after already succeeding as rappers.
Having accomplished so much in both forms of entertainment, Smith was willing to offer some sage advice to his peers.

In 2021, Wesley Snipes used an Esquire "What I've Learned" column to make a fascinating confession: "I've got to learn how to be a movie star."
Snipes was 58 at the time of the article's publication, and enjoying a career renaissance due to his portrayal of actor-director D'Urville Martin in Craig Brewster's uproarious "Dolemite Is My Name." Though he'd officially made his comeback as an aging gang leader in Spike Lee's "Chi-Raq" four years prior, Martin was the perfect vehicle through which Snipes could examine the frustration of an ambitious artist shunted from A-list roles to low-aiming exploitation flicks.
Snipes' Martin is a bitter, alcoholic filmmaker trying, and failing miserably, to make nightclub comic Rudy Ray Moore (Eddie Murphy) look like a Blaxploitation action star on par with Richard Roundtree. Martin is a defeated man, and it's hard not to sense Snipes reckoning with the sun setting on his own action-hero stardom.

Goldie Hawn has been a star for more than 50 years. She got her start dancing and giggling, often in a bikini, on "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In," a seminal TV comedy series of the late 1960s. She left the show to focus on her film career. At first, her film roles were pretty similar to the free spirit/dumb blonde act she did on "Laugh-In," but her potential as a comedic actor shone through, and by the 1980s, she was leading movies herself. After starring in some classics of the '80s and '90s, she left acting behind in the early 2000s, focusing on her family, writing her autobiography, and running the Hawn Foundation, a nonprofit that helps disadvantaged kids perform better in school.
After a 15-year hiatus from the big screen, Goldie Hawn returned to star with Amy Schumer in the comedy "Snatched." Since then, she's appeared alongside her real-life partner,...

"White Men Can't Jump" is a rare example of moviemaking where everything seemed to come together perfectly. Writer/director Ron Shelton was able to combine his love for LA and streetball with this 1992 effort, and found two stars who couldn't have had better chemistry, both on camera and off. Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson, who played Sidney Deane and Billy Hoyle respectively, were effortlessly captivating as struggling Venice Beach basketball players who hustle their way through LA's streetball scene. Had Snipes not sabotaged his "White Men Can't Jump" audition with Keanu Reeves, things might have been different. But as it stands, the movie is one of the best basketball films ever made, largely due to its two leads and their easy rapport.
After Sidney encounters Billy during a pickup game on the famed Venice Beach courts, he invites "the chump" to play, only to discover that Billy is good — maybe even better than him.

The story of how "White Men Can't Jump" got made is an interesting one, and certainly worth looking back on given the upcoming remake starring Jack Harlow and Sinqua Walls. From the fact that Keanu Reeves auditioned — and failed miserably — for the role that would eventually fall to Woody Harrelson, to the fact that Wesley Snipes was, by all accounts, very bad at basketball, it's almost amazing that the film was not only a success but has had a lasting legacy as one of the best movies about roundball ever made.
A big part of that is due to the chemistry between Harrelson and Snipes, who have been connected over the years going all the way back to the 1986 high school football comedy "Wildcats." Their performances as Billy Hoyle and Sidney Dean, and the way that their real-life friendship pops in every scene they share, have helped "White Men Can't Jump...

The task of casting two actors that can play believable friends is a feat that can't be faked, and it was only half the battle when it came time to cast the basketball buddy comedy "White Men Can't Jump." Writer-director Ron Shelton was looking for more than just chemistry between his two leads. He also needed actors that looked like they belonged on the court, which made it a grueling casting process for its prospective stars.
Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson were already longtime friends before "White Men Can't Jump" fell into their laps. They'd met on the set of "Wildcats," another sports comedy starring Goldie Hawn, and had spent something like six years cultivating a rapid-fire rapport. That pre-established chemistry should have made their casting a no-brainer — if only Snipes and Harrelson were as much of a match on the court as they were off of it.

In between his mega-hit “Back to the Future” sequels and his Oscar juggernaut crowdpleaser “Forrest Gump,” Robert Zemeckis directed the sublime black comedy “Death Becomes Her,” released to theaters 30 years ago on July 31, 1992. In a summer of mostly safe, audience-friendly comedies like “Sister Act” and “HouseSitter,” “Death Becomes Her” entered the marketplace an oddball piece of dark, absurdist humor that didn’t fit into a clear category. Let’s take a moment and reflect on the “Death Becomes Her” 30th anniversary.

In case you need photographic evidence that nature is healing, we present: Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett on the red carpet together in 2022. The costars and rumored exes reunited at the season three premiere of "High School Musical: The Musical: The Series" on July 27, and there was not one ounce of bad blood in sight. The pair, who portray onscreen love interests Nini and Ricky on the Disney+ series, were all smiles and made silly faces while posing side by side. Plus, they were matching for the event - Rodrigo donned a black cutout minidress and tights, while Bassett wore a silky black suit and boots. Let's not get ahead of ourselves, though; that likely wasn't planned.
After the screening wrapped, Rodrigo gave a sweet shout-out to her costars on Instagram, sharing a photo with Bassett, Matt Cornett, and Sofia Wylie, and another with the entire cast. She captioned the post,...

November is a good month for saying goodbye on HBO Max. The streaming platform will host the final 2021 episodes of HBO late-night staples “Real Time with Bill Maher” and the Emmy Award-winning “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” the season finales of Max originals “Love Life” and “Doom Patrol,” and also provide home viewers their last opportunity to watch “Dune” on HBO Max until sometime in 2022 (“Dune” leaves HBO Max on November 21).
But beyond those conclusions, there are some huge premieres as well: Oscar contender “King Richard” arrives on November 19 with Will Smith in the lead role, the back-half of “Gossip Girl” Season 1 will make its debut at some point, and the HBO Music Box series continues with the Alanis Morrisette documentary “Jagged” (which the singer roundly criticized) and a new feature on Dmx. When it released Wonder Woman 1984 to its HBO Max servers in December, WarnerMedia made it abundantly clear that it was ready for a new era of movie distribution. Now, in its list of new releases for February 2021, Warner is attempting another grand experiment for HBO Max.
Judas and the Black Messiah premieres on HBO Max this Feb. 12 and is by every indication the kind of film that awards shows go gaga over. Both Daniel Kaluuya and and Lakeith Stanfield look to be at the top of their respective games in this story about Black Panther Party chairman Fred Hampton and the FBI that wants to take him down. Will this have the same rhetorical oomph on the small screen? Guess we’ll find out!

Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson have teamed up a couple of times in the past, once in the still-funny White Men Can’t Jump, and then once again in Money Train, which was still amusing but not quite as popular. They were also in Wildcats together, and Snipes had a minor role in Play It to the Bone, a boxing movie that Harrelson starred in with Antonia Banderas. The two have proven that they have great on-screen chemistry together, but it’s been a while since we had the chance to see it play out, largely because Snipes managed to get himself

More than a decade after saying goodbye to High School Musical, Lucas Grabeel is going back to his Wildcat roots with Disney+'s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. In the upcoming episode, titled "The Tech Rehearsal," the actor makes a fun cameo as he sings along with theater director Miss Jenn in a dream sequence. However, instead of playing his iconic character Ryan Evans from the films, Grabeel is actually playing a version of himself.
As an Og Wildcat, Grabeel has always been skeptical about rebooting the High School Musical franchise over the years, but there was just something about the Disney+ series that felt different. "Over the years, I had heard whispers of possible sequels, television series, or different ideas that Disney was rolling around to continue the franchise, and to be honest, a lot of those ideas I didn't really care for," he told Popsugar.

Following on the success of The Wild Storm, DC is bringing back WildCATs.
Warren Ellis and Jon Davis Hunt’s The Wild Storm has been one of the best comics of the last couple of years. It is at the same time a reboot of a much loved comic universe that uses its spreading tendrils as a line to plant it firmly within the broader DC multiverse And a deconstruction of both the form and substance of an entire era of comics. But it’s also coming to an end, a planned 24-issue series that was only intended to weave the threads of a broader world for others to pick up.
DC announced the next thread to be picked up, and it is very exciting: Ellis and Ramon Villalobos relaunch WildCATs this August.
“The first line I wrote down for WildCATs was: ‘Saving the human race from the human race,...

Action superstar Wesley Snipes, in his first leading role since 2012’s cult hit Gallowwalkers, returns to the screen as The Hunter, a character as memorable as his iconic title role in the Blade films. Here, Snipes has a hell of good time as a no-nonsense survivalist trying to stop aliens from taking over planet Earth, and attempting to convince a cabin full of teens what is at stake – basically, the end of humanity.
Featuring genuinely creepy creatures and dazzling effects, flying saucers, alien abductions, attractive young actors being picked off one by one, and Snipes charging around the woods in army gear, with a pump-action shotgun,...

During the 80s when you think of boxing movies you’ll always think of the Rocky franchise. But there was one boxing movie in 1986 that featured a young Wesley Snipes in only his second featured film (first one was Wildcats) called Streets of Gold. The movie stars Klaus Maria Brandauer, the Oscar winner from “Out Of Africa,” as an alcoholic former boxing champion from Russia, a Jew who was the greatest Soviet fighter of his generation but who wasn’t allowed to fight outside Russia because of his religion. Now we meet him 10 years later, stumbling through the gutters of

With the news that White Men Can’t Jump will be … can’t jumping back into theaters courtesy of Kenya Barris, who created ABC’s hit Black-ish, we thought it would be a good opportunity to revisit some facts about the original 1992 film, starring future True Detective Woody Harrelson and future vampire hunter Wesley Snipes.
The film’s leads were almost Denzel Washington and Keanu Reeves
Washington turned the film down to do Malcolm X, and despite demonstrating his athleticism later in The Matrix, Reeves was apparently so uncoordinated on the court that he “almost broke my neck going up for a layup,...

Jan Hooks, a former Saturday Night Live cast member, died on Thursday in New York. She was 57.
Jan Hooks Dies
Hooks' death was confirmed by her representative Lisa Lieberman to CNN. She had apparently been suffering from a serious illness.
Hooks is best known for her stint on Saturday Night Live, which ran from 1986-1991. On the sketch show, Hooks took on a number of notable impersonations, including Hillary Clinton, Kathy Lee Gifford, Bette Davis and Jodie Foster. Her most memorable role on the show, however, was probably as Candy Sweeney, one half of the popular Sweeney Sisters with Nora Dunn.
Back in 1980, Hooks, a native of Georgia, got her start on The Bill Tush Show and later landed a role on TV series Not Necessarily the News. She went on to appear in features Wildcats, Funland and Batman Returns and star in Designing Women as Carlene Frazier Dobber.

The 2014/2015 NFL season is well under way, with some teams already looking like genuine Super Bowl contenders and others looking so bad they seem to be playing a different sport entirely.
With the time difference between the UK and Us meaning that most games don't kick-off until the evening hours over here, there's plenty of time to kill on Sundays waiting for the matches to start. Digital Spy picks out nine American football-based movies to pass the time on Sundays and get in the mood for the real thing...

Remember last year when through its Amazon overlords Lovefilm put several pilots online including the pretty good failed Zombieland pilot? Well, they are at it again with ten new pilots, none of which have committed to series yet but with which the lucky few will go to one of those full season exclusive type deals that Netflix do so well.
I don’t know about you but I kind of wish they would just commit to something right out the gate and take the risks, its paid off for Netflix so far and Amazon are attracting some major talent to their stable too.
The pilots include; Bosch a detective show based on a Michael Connelly book series and starring the great Titus Welliver, Kids shows Wishenproof, Hardboiled Eggheads, The JoB and Graff Show and Gortimer Gibbons Life on Normal Street. We also have comedy from The Rebels; a kind of...

Environmentalist. Cannabis spokesperson. Playwright. Vegan. Cannabis enjoyer. Woody Harrelson is a complex individual and a multifaceted presence on screen, his roles running the range of clean-cut cowboy to cold-blooded killer. But no matter who he's playing there always seems to be a lingering essence of the real Woody, and that's why he rules.
This week sees the former TV star getting "Cheers" for his role as a stage-magician-cum-bank-robber in "Now You See Me" and this November he'll reprise the part of Haymitch Abernathy in his first-ever sequel, "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire." We're stoking the fires of Woody worship as we pay tribute to our favorite High Times cover boy with nine of his quintessential roles.
9. 'A Scanner Darkly' (2006)
There's no denying the essential Woodiness of stoner dude Ernie Luckman in Richard Linklater's rotoscope animated take on one of Philip K. Dick's most grounded and personal novels.

I was feeling a little neglected having waited for what felt like an eternity for this new episode, but "A Night of Neglect" turned into an evening of ecstasy.
We were introduced to the Brainiacs and their clever ode to Nerdom handshake. With the cost of their trip to Detroit added to the Glee Club's fundraising goal, Will postured like the Nino Brown of salt water taffy. Not since Nipsey Russell tried to sell the last of the peanut brittle to buy new uniforms for the Central High Wildcats had I seen a more pathetic idea.
Luckily the notion of a benefit concert was born and with it an amazing display of the many talented members of New Directions.
Before the singing started though, we learned Brittany had a quirky knack for obscure trivia. She ripped through those Cat Diseases like Rosie Perez named foods that start with the letter...

Gloria Stuart, the elegant actress who found fame late in her seven decade Hollywood career when she earned an Oscar nomination for her role as the elderly Rose in 1997's Titanic, passed away on Sunday in her West Los Angeles home. She was 100 years old.
Born Gloria Frances Stewart on July 4, 1910 in Santa Monica, California, she grew up in southern California and attended Santa Monica High School and the University of California at Berkeley, where she first became interested in acting. After dropping out of college and marrying Blair Gordon Newell in 1930, she continued to explore acting in productions at the Pasadena Playhouse. Hollywood studios began to take notice of the petite blonde actress, and she soon signed a contract with Universal Studios, but not before changing her surname from "Stewart" to "Stuart" as she believed it would look better on a theater marquee.
Her first appearance at Universal was in 1932's Street of Women, the same year in which she was named one of WAMPAS Baby Stars (young women the industry believed had the most potential for movie stardom.) She appeared in varied roles assigned to her by the studio, but it was her new friendship with director James Whale that led to her most memorable roles from this era, in the horror/thrillers The Old Dark House, Kiss Before the Mirror and The Invisible Man. Underutilized at Universal, she moved on to Warner Brothers, where she would work regularly through the end of the decade, with notable movies including Gold Diggers of 1935 and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm.
In 1934, she divorced Blair Gordon Newell, and in the same year married screenwriter Arthur Sheekman, who wrote movies for the Marx Brothers. It was at dinner one evening with Harpo and Groucho Marx that Ms. Stuart learned about a new group that they and other actors were forming - the Screen Actors Guild. She believed actors needed protection from working too many long hours and joined their cause, becoming one of SAG's founding members. In 1935, Gloria and Arthur welcomed a daughter, Sylvia, and in 1939 the family left on a tour around the world, only returning home to California when World War II began. It was during this time in Europe that Ms. Stuart became interested in art, and in the years that her acting career waned she focused instead on creating furniture, decoupage, painting and eventually fine art printing.
Ms. Stuart retired from acting in 1946, and remained so until 1975, when she resumed her career with a role in the TV movie The Legend of Lizzie Borden. After the death of her husband Arthur in 1978, she appeared in a variety of roles through the remained of the 1970s and 1980s, including "Murder, She Wrote", "The Waltons", My Favorite Year, Mass Appeal, and Wildcats.
It was her role in James Cameron's 1997 epic Titanic, however, that gained her massive stardom, with her portrayal of the 101-year-old Rose DeWitt Bukater remembering the final hours of the Titanic as intertwined with meeting her first love, captured the public's imagination and affection. Her performance earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. At the age of 87, the nomination - her first - made her the oldest person ever nominated for an Oscar. She received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2000, and detailed her more than 70 years in the film industry in her biography "I Just Kept Hoping". Her work in Titanic was followed by a steady stream of roles in TV and film, most notably two films with director Wim Wenders: The Million Dollar Hotel in 2000, and Land of Plenty in 2004.

The 2010 NFL Draft gets underway tonight, giving sports fans something new to argue about for at least a couple of weeks. The draft's rules and the selection process are significantly more complex than your typical playground pick-'em method for splitting teams, but thankfully, we here at Movies Blog play by our own set of rules.
If given the opportunity to draft a team based on the many fictional football players out there in movie land, this is what you would want your starting roster to look like!
First Round: Dan Marino
Of course Dan Marino, the American Hall of Fame quarterback who unfortunately rubbed Ray Finkle the wrong way in "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective," is a first-round pick. He was an all-star football player in real life. Sure, he's not exactly in top form these days, but if we're plucking characters straight out of movie history, Marino circa 1994 is a steal.

The actor made his debut in the 1986 film, alongside Woody Harrelson and Goldie Hawn, and landed $30,000 (£18,750) for his role.
He was eager to inform his mum Marian of the news - but was left devastated when she revealed her lifelong financial struggle to him.
Snipes tells America's GQ magazine, "She asked, 'Did you say $30,000? Thirty…thousand…dollars? That's twice as much as I make.'
"I was floored. I was on one high at one moment, and then I was on a low low low, just like that. I had no concept of the level of struggle that she was going through, none whatsoever.
"(I thought) You mean to tell me you've been (working) for almost ten years and all you make is $15,000, and they're going to pay me more than you, and you have to get up at three o'clock in the morning?"...

This week I seem to be out to prove that I’m not a pessimist, because I’m picking things that I actually want to read. In fact, I don’t make fun of a single book this week. What the hell is wrong with me?
Don’t worry, there’s nothing wrong with me. Comics just happen to be delightful this week.
Welcome to This Week in Comics, where every day is a comic book, and some weeks, as you’ll find out, are more promising than others.
Monday
First Issues. You really should have seen this one coming.
Joe The Barbarian #1 (of

It’s a good thing Grant Morrison treats his superhero comics as serious business or the infrequency of his creator-owned stuff would frustrate. The plot to Joe the Barbarian sounds a bit like a kids’ version of Flex Mentallo:...

Unless you've been living in a cave or don't keep up with what's playing at the local multiplex, you probably know that one of the biggest hits of the fall was the Sandra Bullock football movie The Blind Side.
No, that's not a typo. It is a Sandra Bullock football movie, but unlike Goldie Hawn's football movie -- Wildcats -- Sandra's movie was very good. It's so good that Sandra's probably going to get her first Oscar nomination and -- depending on the competition -- she could win.
Well, ABC has noticed that The Blind Side has struck a real chord with people. 20/20 will take advantage of the interest in the true story on which the movie is based to present the true story of The Blind Side.
They're calling the special edition of 20/20, "The Blind Side: The Real Story Behind the Movie." That was in case you thought...
