I Alone Have Lived To Tell The Tale
bkoganbing4 January 2009
Warning: Spoilers
For those of you who think of Dean Jones as the amiable lightweight hero of a few Disney films, you are in for a jolting, but pleasant surprise should you see St. John In Exile. This is his one man show, done in the style of James Whitmore as Will Rogers and Harry S. Truman. Jones who was 55 when this filmed record of a live performance was made, is made up to look all of the 86 years old that the Apostle John was living over on the Island of Patmos.

As it is written, John was living in a cave there, essentially under house arrest. He's the last survivor of that selected group of men that Jesus collected as followers and charged with the responsibility of spreading his new interpretation of the Jewish faith. As John points out it was the Romans who gave the name 'Christian' to those who followed the new interpretation.

John's living alone with occasional visitors from the outside. Living with both his memories which he shares with visitors. He talks of the message of Jesus and the miracles of Jesus. He goes into a poignant first person account of the arrest, trial, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus, Jones really does make you think he was there.

The biggest miracle he says is that Jesus had to have been the Messiah because he took essentially unlearned men and made them the most powerful preachers of all time. John goes into quite a bit about his own background, he and his brother Andrew were just fishermen, Matthew a tax collector, etc.

It's cost him dear, his faith. John goes through the litany of what happened to the people he broke bread with that fateful Passover night. Why was he alone spared like Melville's Ishmael to tell the tale?

John comes to the conclusion there is still work to do. To write about the visions he's seen in the cave, a portend of things to come. But even more importantly to put down his own first hand account of his time with Jesus. Another gospel needs to be written, one aimed at a universal message, not one specifically directed at convincing the Jews that Jesus was the Messiah come to earth.

At 86 John realizes his life may have been rich and full of triumph and tragedy, but he's still got plenty to do while he's here on earth and in full possession of his faculties.

St. John In Exile is a good film, fully deserving of a wider audience than the Christian circuit it primarily played on. Jones may just have given his finest performance on film with this work.

Magnificent performance from an incredible actor
paulb_3025 March 2006
This is an outstanding production. For those who only know Dean Jones from the Disney pictures (The Love Bug, Shaggy D.A., etc.) and such, here is a role for the actor that provides an opportunity for him to reveal both his tremendous dramatic talent and his deep Christian faith. Although some may say it is a little slow moving (perhaps because it is a recording of a stage performance at Jack Hayford's Church on the Way), the story is excellently written and has real depth. The production makes good use of various camera angles as well as creative lighting to add drama to the presentation. You find yourself quickly drawn into the story as Jones powerfully brings St. John to life, recounting, from his cell on the isle of Patmos, his journey with Jesus and the other disciples. A real tour de force performance by Jones (in the tradition of such one-man shows as Hal Holbrook's Mark Twain or James Whitmore's Harry Truman) makes this a DVD worth watching by anyone who appreciates a magnificent performance from an incredible actor and one that should definitely be in every Christian's collection.

Accurate and reverent
Handmaidn26 October 1999
This movie, of all the movies that speak of the life of Christ, was not only reverent and accurate, based solely on the Scripture, but acted as a "peek" back into the inner circle of Jesus' earthly friends. John, the apostle, speaks with wit and charm and affection for the Lord to a group of young Christians while in exile at Patmos Penal Colony. It brings the viewer closer to Jesus and to all those who have given their lives for Him. Definitely a must see.

Amazing, You must see this movie, very powerful
jennp719 December 2002
This Movie is amazing. It is a one man show (play) about the apostle John while he was exiled on the island of Patmos. Dean Jones is superb as John. It is set as if you the audience has come to the island to see him. He tells his Gospel of Jesus and shares revelation. This is an accurate presentation of the Gospel of John. This film also makes a great witnessing tool. You feel like you are actually there with him walking with Jesus. You must see this film you will not be disapointed.

Dean Jones at his best
morganfj26 October 2004
As a conservative Mennonite I found the subject and contents sound and entertaining. This is a Staged production with audience with only one performer on stage. Acting as John during his house arrest under Roman guard the performer entrances the audience with his dialog and brings you a visual image through his acting and minimal props. He invites the audience in and speaks directly to them, thus drawing you directly on stage.

What was most amazing was this was Dean Jone (Love Bug - Disney)... What a great performance. Its on VHS and DVD at your local Christian bookstore. Highly recommended.

Outstanding and POWERFUL! A MUST SEE!
jeffers-56 January 2010
I was gripped in Awe as I watched Dean Jones portray Saint John in exile on the Isle of Patmos. I kept asking myself, "How can he act with such passion?". But I knew that the anointing of God makes men able to do things they couldn't otherwise do. This is no Sunday school Children's play! This is ministry through an actors portrayal of a powerful Bible figure.

The make-up, the scenery, the live audience all makes this a special viewing. You will come away with a better understanding of what it was like to walk with Jesus Christ. Early on there are some funny scenes, but before it's over you'll probably be in tears!

Buy a copy! You will treasure it!

Dean Jones, actor, Christian, a tour de force one-man performance
safenoe22 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
The ordinary DVD cover for St. John in Exile belies the incredibly impressive and unforgettable performance of Dean Jones, who manages to give 110% in glorifying God through his solo role as St John, the last survivor of Jesus's 12 apostles.

Dean Jones (who went to be with the Lord in 2015) manages to not only remember his lines, but give so much passion and emotion on stage, and get into several characters. Yes, this was performed live, and in fact St. John in Exile toured the USA, with Dean performing each time. There are some humorous moments, and the audience cracked up over the locust in the teeth line.

I wonder how Dean managed to remember all his lines, his cues, the blocking, and so on. God was with him as he prepared to be on stage.

You've got to see this!

This is an amazing performance! I was blessed to be able to see a live presentation of it and meet Dean afterward, along with his sweet wife. I know from watching it live that there are no cuts, no breaks, no prompting cards. This man committed to memory the ENTIRE script!!! I am so glad I was privileged to see it. Of course I bought it as soon as I found it had been recorded, and the recorded performance is just as amazing. I can't help but imagine hearing God tell Dean, "Well done, good and faithful servant." 👍

One of the portrayals that has deeply moved me!
kimberkm-7151220 September 2020
The most unbelievable portrayal, and movement of the spirit, through this man, the earthly angels involved in bringing us this Heavenly Masterpiece, and Christ Jesus! a MUST SEE Oscar presentation!

Bless our brothers and our sisters, Father, and peace and understanding to those lost souls in search of understanding and believing. I ask you to bring us more of these portrayals, and help us each to spread them through the world, Father. In the name of our Christ Jesus, our Savior, we come to you and ask these things, our Heavenly Father, amen!

MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL!

Religious stage play
BandSAboutMovies26 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This is another odd part of Dan Curtis' career - a filmed version of Dean Jones (That Darn Cat!, The Love Bug) acting out the final days of John, the last living disciple of Jesus' twelve apostles.

He speaks to the audience as if they can hear him and continually makes jokes throughout, but gives you the idea of what it would be like to actually hear Jesus' story from someone who lived it.

Who knew that this week would take me from Dark Shadows to the realm of Kolchak, the classics like Oscar Wilde and Bram Stoker, and then to...the Bible? Ah well. It's never boring writing about movies.

The reviews on Amazon are mixed by people absolutely loving this and hardcore fundamentalists who don't like all the jokes. Then there are others who are upset that it's basically a filmed stage play. Me? I was entertained, as I rarely watch anything like this.

The best portrayal of the love of Jesus.
hiskids30 March 2004
I recently watched this film for the first time. I found it very well done. The acting, by Dean Jones, was very impressive. I felt the scene where he portrayed the crucifixion was the best I had ever seen. It brought home to me just how much Jesus did for me when He died on the cross. I would recommend this movie to anyone who wants to know the greatness of Jesus. Jones portrays St. John as a real person. He does a marvelous job changing voices as he speaks of the different people. His humour adds to the character a great deal. The lighting and music was also well done. I would recommend this movie to everyone, even those who do not choose to believe in Jesus.
