As the Hollywood blockbuster machine continues to dust itself off and release some early winter hits, Hulu is going in a bit of a different direction with its list of new releases for November 2021.
There are no big Hulu original films of note this month. Instead there’s a whole host of original series. The TV parade starts on Nov. 5 with the release of Animaniacs season 2. Also getting a second season this month is monarchal comedy The Great on Nov. 19. The most intriguing series, however, is animated Marvel comedy Marvel’s Hit Monkey. As its name so graciously implies, this is a show about a hit monkey…as in monkey assassin. Naturally the hit monkey is haunted by the ghost of Jason Sudeikis because it’s important that everything make sense.
Though Hulu doesn’t have any original movies in November, its list of library movie titles is quite vast.

Most moviegoers who witnessed the 2020 Sundance Film Festival premiere of “Palm Springs” probably did not expect that it would be the only traditional comedy nominated for Best Musical or Comedy at this year’s Golden Globes. After all, comedies (and dramedies) have disproportionately dominated the category for the past decade, while only eight musicals have managed to snag bids. However, the 2021 lineup turned out to be another deviation from the norm in a year full of them.
Joining “Palm Springs” is the unconventional mockumentary “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” which takes the subversiveness of its predecessor to a whole new level. The other three slots are filled by “The Prom,” a standard musical adaptation of the Broadway musical, “Hamilton,” a live stage recording of the legit hit, and “Music,” an original musical drama. The last time three musicals competed against each other for the top honor was in 2008, and it only happened six times before that.

Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez shines in her totally delightful Netflix comedy Someone Great, written and directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. In addition to everything else Someone Great is — a break-up comedy, a killer soundtrack, a girls-together-outrageously romp — it’s a movie about music fans, people who live their lives and suffer and fuck up and bond and grieve while obsessing over their favorite songs. It finds clever ways to crush your soul with Mitski or Phoebe Bridgers tunes. A moment in a bodega where you hear a Selena...

Spoon is working on a new record, according to frontman Britt Daniel. In a band newsletter, Daniel said the group has been hanging out at drummer Jim Eno’s studio a lot lately, and—though the band is still in the midst of writing songs—“the shit is sounding good.” Daniel and company have also Instagrammed pics from inside the studio and dropped eight new song titles, including “The Rent I Pay,” “Naff Bag,” “Millionaires,” “Let Me Be Mine,” “Modern Girls,” “I Ain’t The One,” “Fresh From Your Pages,” and “Give Me It.” Meanwhile, Daniel’s other band, Divine ...

What had Et readers buzzing this week?
1. Michael Clarke Duncan Dies
Actor Michael Clarke Duncan has died, Et has learned.
The Green Mile star's fiancee, Reverend Omarosa Manigault, has confirmed that the actor passed away in Los Angeles September 3 at the age of 54.
This news comes after Duncan's hospitalization following a "myocardial infarction" suffered on July 13 from which he never fully recovered.
According to Manigault's rep, "[she] is grateful for all of your prayers and asks for privacy at this time. Celebrations of [Duncan's] life, both private and public, will be announced at a later date."
A close friend tells Et that Manigault is "devastated" over the loss.
The Golden Globe and Oscar-nominated actor was born in Chicago and moved to Los Angeles in 1990, supporting himself as a bodyguard while pursuing an acting career.
His first roles closely resembled his day job, playing either guards or bouncers in films such as Back in Business, A Night at the Roxbury, [link...

Four years after taking the national stage in support of her husband at the Democratic National Convention in 2008, First Lady Michelle Obama returned to the spotlight Tuesday night in Charlotte, North Carolina to convince voters to re-elect Barack Obama as President of the United States.

Someone over at Netflix (and, more specifically Netflix's 'Watch Instantly' department) has been digging into my brain and pulling out some really strange and obscure movies that (as far as I know) aren't even available on DVD! The last time out, I was gushing over titles like Rolling Thunder, The Squeeze, and Planet of the Vampires -- but this time the Netflix VHS Stack is overflowing with wierd little flickers. Get a load of these ones:
The 1986 comedy Modern Girls, starring Cynthia Gibb, Daphne Zuniga, Virginia Madsen, and Clayton Rohner. I actually saw this one during its theatrical run. Some of the Animal House guys (Tim Matheson, Stephen Furst) team up with one of the Porky's guys (Dan Monahan) and the Esp hottie from Ghostbusters (Jennifer Runyon) to deliver one of the more fondly-remembered sex comedies of 1984: Up the Creek! Also features a cool Cheap Trick song and a great performance by a dog.
