Havoc, John Woo, and how action cinema crosses cultures and continents
Image
The action cinema of John Wick, Havoc and John Woo’s The Killer has constantly evolved as it’s travelled between filmmakers and eras.

Now on Netflix, writer-director Gareth Evans’ Havoc is an ultra-violent stew of influences. It’s set in a benighted US city, but was shot in Wales; its bullet-strewn action is directly inspired by Hong Kong filmmaker John Woo.

Then again, action cinema has always been a particularly international genre, taking in disparate bits of American westerns, low-key French thrillers and more besides. When John Woo directed A Better Tomorrow, released in 1986, its contemporary gangland setting and ferocious shoot-outs changed the look and feel of action cinema forever. Widely credited with inventing what was later dubbed the ‘heroic bloodshed’ genre, it made a star out of its lead, Chow Yun-fat.

Woo continued to hone his signature style – slow-motion photography, close-quarters action, and his characters’ habit of holding...

The Walking Dead’s Legendary Theme Song Was Designed to Avoid a Critical Mistake Made by a Short-Lived DC Series
Image
The Walking Dead was a unique show that balances the drama with the survival thriller setting of a zombie apocalypse. While still at the height of the zombie-obsession in Hollywood, the show offered a more poignant exploration of how humans function in a fallen society and how they seek to rebuild a sense of meaning through various ways.

A post-apocalyptic setting would have a lot of artifacts that were remnants of the past, and music composer Bear McCreary reportedly hoped to invoke the same emptiness and a foreboding sense of doom with the theme song. His creative direction was also guided by his previous work on the series Human Target.

The Walking Dead’s theme used fewer instruments because of Human Target A still from Human Target | Credits: Fox

While AMC’s The Walking Dead is set during a zombie apocalypse, the episodes are not always action-based and have long scenes of talking and drama.

Image
Spoiler Alert: This story includes details from the finale of Prime Target on Apple.

One of the highlights of Apple’s Prime Target has been the welcome addition of Martha Plimpton as Jane Torres, an Nsa queen who heads of a group of spies who surveil mathematicians all over the globe. Her portrayal of the villainous figure who ends up double-crossing her young charge so she can get her hooks into Leo Woodall’s Edward Brooks has made the twisty series a little less preposterous and a lot more fun.

Here, the veteran actress last seen in The Regime and forever missed as Patty Nyholm on The Good Wife talks about the drama’s finale, what viewers should expect will happen to Jane, and why she thinks the show has resonated so much with viewers.

Deadline: Martha, were you the token American in this British production from New Regency and Scott Free Productions?...

This Cartoon Network Classic Sadly Ended an 84-Year Animation Trend
Image
Children’s shows usually fall into one of two categories. Some are quickly axed and forgotten. Others, like Cartoon Network’s inimitably strange Ed, Edd, n Eddy, enjoy lengthy runs and animated immortality. More precisely, the show’s ten-year run makes it the fifteenth longest-running animated cartoon in American history.

Of course, being a Cartoon Network show, it trends towards the edgier side of animated content. Detractors often called out the show for its plentiful toilet humor and unique visuals. While the former accusation is true, the latter was and still is a matter of personal taste. For example, Terrence Briggs criticized the show’s artistic style for resembling an “acid trip caricature” in the February 1999 issue of Animation World Magazine. Oddly enough, that animation is one of the show’s many claims to fame. See, Ed, Edd, n Eddy was made at the tail end of classic animation. By the time of its premiere,...

5 shows that will probably flop in 2025
Image
Now that 2024 has reached its end and all the dust is starting to settle on the television season, it's time to look ahead at the new streaming shows coming in 2025. Once the new year arrives, so will the rush of brand-new series looking to secure a spot on our watch lists.

Inevitably, not all of these shows will manage to find success in all the ways they need to become popular hits. That being said, no one looks at a new show and prays on its downfall. Well, at least no one should actively wish for a show to fail, and that's not the intention here at all.

Just as we can predict that some shows will probably be canceled in 2025, we can use our best judgment to reflect on some of the newbies entering the ring in the new year and estimate whether they have what it takes to...

Michael Fassbender Has Eyes on Target in First Poster for David Fincher’s ‘The Killer’
Image
Our first look at director David Fincher’s new film “The Killer,” which debuts on Netflix in November after a limited theatrical run, has arrived in the form of a gorgeously illustrated poster that puts star Michael Fassbender front and center.

Based on the graphic novel of the same name by Alexis Nolent, the film follows an assassin who’s battling his employers (and himself) on an international manhunt he insists isn’t personal. Fincher’s frequent collaborator Andrew Kevin Walker (“Seven”) wrote the screenplay, and the film reunites the filmmaker with his “Mank” cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt as well as other longtime companions – composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross handle the score and Donald Graham Burt is the production designer.

Illustrated by Luc Jacamon and first debuted by The Fincher Analyst, the poster – which is timed to the film’s world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on Sept. 3 – evokes...

‘Mancunian Man: The Legendary Life of Cliff Twemlow’ Review: Moving Tribute To A Cult Movie Maverick – Frightfest
Image
Cliff Twemlow is an obscure figure even by British B-movie standards, a handsome, no-nonsense former Manchester nightclub doorman who attempted to create a Hollywood of the north in the early ’80s and ’90s. Born in 1937, a fact he tried to cloud for many years, he was something of a renaissance man: He acted in soaps, he composed lucrative library music, he wrote a novel about a killer pike, and, after a wounding experience with a botched adaptation of his autobiographical novel Tuxedo Warrior, he decided to become a filmmaker himself.

His first production, G.B.H. (1982), was shot on video — the grainy, ugly, analog kind — and it rode on the coattails of the recent hit The Long Good Friday. Twemlow starred as a handsome, no-nonsense Manchester nightclub doorman, hired to protect a local nightclub from a protection racket after returning from a stretch in prison.

The ship has sailed: A TV show from Kazakhstan will portray romances between top TikTokers
Image
Some of the top TikTok stars in Central Asia are coming together for a drama series, and the show’s creators are planning to engage with their viewers in a unique way. Kazakhstan’s Jks Entertainment and 1Os Studios are producing Target, an eight-episode program that will unite beloved influencers — and pair them up as the audience sees fit.

Target will combine elements of mystery, romance, drama, and sci-fi to tell the story of an elite private high school. The show is similar to other projects that have spotlighted top TikTokers, in that the app’s culture will become part of the plot. In Target‘s case, the central mystery will be set off by strange DMs that arrive on the protagonist’s phone.

It is Target‘s cast, rather than its premise, that will command attention. The cast includes influencers who are huge in Kazakhstan and live in shared creator houses.

Penn Badgley in You (2018)
When You, based on the Caroline Kepnes novel of the same name, premiered on Lifetime back in 2018, the drama about romantic obsession turned sinister, barely made an impression before the network unceremoniously canceled it. But then it got dropped on Netflix, where it became an overnight sensation. Now Penn Badgley returns as Joe Goldberg in season 2 of You, […]

Jeff Koons
Film Review: ‘The Price of Everything’
Jeff Koons
Every so often, when you hear that a painting by Picasso just sold at auction for a record $179 million, or that a Pollock or a Basquiat or a Jeff Koons now routinely fetch prices worthy of a Silicon Valley start-up, it’s easy to wonder what, exactly, is going on. Is this a true expression of the art’s value? Or is it the symptom of some skyrocketing hothouse bubble that has decadently transformed art into gold?

“The Price of Everything,” Nathaniel Kahn’s brilliant and captivating documentary about how the art world got converted into a money market, is shrewd enough to know that the answer is both. The movie gazes, with a good amount of woe (but also with the pleasurable voyeuristic charge that tends to accompany displays of great wealth), at what the art world has become: the staggering auctions at Sotheby’s and Christie’s, where masterpieces,...

Director & Actor Teams: The Overlooked & Underrated (Part 2 of 2)
Following are some supplemental sections featuring notable director & actor teams that did not meet the criteria for the main body of the article. Some will argue that a number of these should have been included in the primary section but keep in mind that film writing on any level, from the casual to the academic, is a game of knowledge and perception filtered through personal taste.

****

Other Notable Director & Actor Teams

This section is devoted to pairings where the duo worked together at least 3 times with the actor in a major role in each feature film, resulting in 1 must-see film.

Terence Young & Sean Connery

Must-See Collaboration: From Russia with Love (1962).

Other Collaborations: Action of the Tiger (1957), Dr. No (1962), Thunderball (1965).

Director Young and actor Connery teamed up to create one of the very best Connery-era James Bond films with From Russia with Love which features a great villainous performance by Robert Shaw...

Saturday Night Live (1975)
Kristen Wiig hosts tonight's 'Saturday Night Live' -- talk about it here!
Saturday Night Live (1975)
Kristen Wiig makes her much-anticipated first return to Saturday Night Live tonight after leaving at the end of last season. After a week of weird last time with Zach Galifianakis, Wiig’s fans are likely hoping the show goes two-for-two on the zany front, allowing Wiig to bring back some of her favorites such as Penelope or Target Lady. (Sorry, but in my opinion the Gilly drink with Justin Timberlake was more than enough of that character this season.)

Much like Timberlake earlier this year, it’ll be interesting to see if the show plays like a DVD repeat of...

[Tiff Review] Imogene
Imogene begins with a childhood flashback of a young girl, which is then followed by an extended point-of-view shot of the same woman many years later. While these are two distinctly different forms of cinematic storytelling, they each try to establish that this will be a film that explores womanhood and its challenges and inherent humor. The woman at the center of this is, of course, to be portrayed by Kristen Wiig.

What brought Ms. Wiig to fame was without a doubt her seven-season tenure on Saturday Night Live. She became the star of the show because of her range of characters, from the easily excitable Midwestern Target Lady to the devilish middle-school student Gilly. While each of these personas were distinct, they showed that Wiig was somewhat of an “auteur” actress. Her vocal and facial ticks; often inward speaking and subtle-to-the-point-of-exaggeration movements with her mouth were definitely “of a piece.

Abduction – review
John Singleton got off to a remarkable start with his directorial debut, Boyz N the Hood, one of the freshest movies about African-American ghetto life and social responsibility. I'll never forget seeing him sitting in the row behind me at its world premiere, an afternoon press screening at Cannes in 1991, where, flanked by Quincy Jones on his right and Spike Lee on his left, he rose shyly to his feet and took off his baseball cap to acknowledge the standing ovation. He's never made anything of comparable quality, and his latest, an espionage thriller, is an efficient, anonymous movie. Abduction takes a subject made familiar by Arthur Penn's Target, Renny Harlin's The Long Kiss Goodnight and Robert Rodriguez's Spy Kids: the discovery by children that apparently conventional suburban parents are in fact deadly Us government agents who have been keeping a low profile.

The boy in...

Arthur Penn: a career in clips
Yesterday Arthur Penn, the director of Bonnie and Clyde, died aged 88. We look back over his career in clips

Arthur Penn cut his teeth as a director on the American television drama circuit of the 1950s, contributing to a range of the playhouse and showcase series that were a staple of the industry. Western stories were among the episodes he delivered and his feature debut was a genre piece, a version of the Billy the Kid story called The Left Handed Gun (1958), starring Paul Newman, also at the start of his cinema career after a small-screen apprenticeship. The film had hints of the broadly sympathetic – or at least empathetic – view of outlaw psychology that would mark Penn's most famous film.

For his next film, Penn drew on his stage directing experience, transferring to the screen the Broadway production of The Miracle Worker in which he directed Anne Sullivan and Patty Duke...

Arthur Penn obituary
American director best known for Bonnie and Clyde, he focused on disillusioned outsiders

Arthur Penn, who has died aged 88, was one of the major figures of Us television, stage and film in the 1960s and 70s when the three disciplines actively encouraged experimentation, innovation and challenging subject matter. "I think the 1960s generation was a state of mind," he said, "and it's really the one I've been in since I was born." He will be best remembered for Bonnie and Clyde (1967), a complex and lyrical study of violent outsiders whose lives became the stuff of myth.

The film, starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, and based on the exploits of the bank-robbing Barrow Gang in the 1930s, became a cause celebre. It was praised and attacked for its distortion, bad taste and glorification of violence in equal measure. Newsweek's critic, Joseph Morgenstern, retracted his initial view of the film's violence,...

Arthur Penn
'Bonnie and Clyde' director dies at 88
Arthur Penn
Arthur Penn, the director of the polarizing "Bonnie and Clyde" whose films often flew in the face of American mythology, died Tuesday, one day after his 88th birthday.

Daughter Molly Penn said her father died of congestive heart failure at his Manhattan home. Longtime friend and business manager Evan Bell said Wednesday that Penn had been ill for about a year.

A product of the golden era of live television and an accomplished theater director, Penn's work on "The Miracle Worker" earned him an Emmy nomination in 1957, a Tony in 1959 and an Oscar nom in 1962. At one time, Penn had five hits running simultaneously on Broadway.

Penn was one of a group of directors -- including John Frankenheimer, Sidney Lumet and Norman Jewison -- whose films were intelligent glimpses into politics, morals and social institutions. Often, they were met with controversy.

His movies debunked the allure of the gunman, the...
