One of the greatest Telugu movies ever made!
srikant_vedutla14 July 2002
This is another great film from Vishwanath and Kamal Hassan. It's very different from Sagara Sangamam, but equal as good. I've spent most of my 18 year existence watching western films and hoped one-day India could achieve some realistic films with a good story. Instead of the banal plots: hero loves girl, girls get kidnapped and hero saves her from the evil villain. Then one of my friends recommended this film. The only word for it is : BEAUTIFUL.

The story is of mentally slow man, whose life is recapped to his grand-daughter. How he meets his wife (who was a widow), earns his living and fights the injustice he and his wife face. Superb acting, especially Kamal Hassan and for once in Indian films the songs fit nicely into the sequence of the film. All in all a great film and a real credit to Indian cinema.

Swathi Muthyam (1986) : Brief Review -

A complete textbook on Human Character Study. Indian Cinema don't need 'Forrest Gump' because we have made better version of Human Drama before Hollywood. This K. Viswanath's Classic has every kind of Human character and most probably only film to derive so many varieties of human characters. There is an innocent one, there is greedy one, there is sensible one, there is one having lost everything, one is stubborn, one is kind, one is selfish and what not. Swathi Muthyam is a complete textbook of human character study and every single character in this film covers one chapter of it. The story is of mentally slow man, whose life is recapped to his grand-daughter. How he meets his wife (who was a widow), earns his living and fights the injustice he and his wife face. Kindly note that this was 7 years before Hollywood made 'Forrest Gump' which is now considered a universal classic due to wider reach of that Industry and also because it won Oscars against better films, undeservingly (Strictly my opinion). I don't want to compare Swathi Muthyam with Forrest Gump, there's no need because i don't consider Forrest Gump that great. Yes, it is a classic, no doubts but certainly not one of the Best Of ALL TIME. People who think so should visit thousands of old Classics to realise it. Swathi Muthyam has better storyline and moreover it has concrete theories as the conflicts in its screenplay and that too without any references from national events. It's not like Forrest Gump where he would start something and after a while leave it just like that. Kamal Haasan plays an innocent orphan with low IQ but immensely kind man who sees the world only from his positive vision. He doesn't even cry when his Granny dies but later grieves for long time. He would do anything to help the people in need, and that puts him agaist the moldy traditions of so called 'sane society'. His attempts to make a widow happy are generous but that's what he sees, rest of the society don't see it that way despite the fact that they are normal but he is not. K. Viswanath has written an unbeatable script that moulds so many poignant thoughts with human life metaphors. It's a highly emotional film, i cried like 3-4 times during the last 30 minutes which is more than whatever tears i rolled down while watching Forrest Gump. Kamal Haasan is just phenomenal as Sivayya and Raadhika too has done a fabulous job. Hats off to K. Viswanath for his masterful direction and what a Melodious music Ilaiyaraaja sir has given to it. I am still humming some lines while writing this line, "Laa Li Laa Li, Laa Li Laa Li...". I have seen its bollywood remake 'Eeshwar' (1989) many times and it's a fine remake with even better Music. But i would recommend this original anytime, not just because it's Original but because it is simply Unmatchable. Strongly Recommended to every single human being who understands Human Drama and its quality proportions in Cinematic aspects. A Cult Classic!

THE MOVIE THAT INSPIRED THE ICONIC CHARACTER FORREST GUMP.
MandalBros-512 January 2021
The title 'Swathi Muthyam' means Pure Pearl, the movie beautifully justified this title. Kamal Haasan gave his soul to this character. Raadhika also did great job in front of The Legend.

Music of Ilayaraja is heart warming. The movie is so emotional in some moments that you can't control your tears. It was the official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film for the Academy Awards in 1986, and at least it should have nominated. It's also heard that the iconic character of Forrest Gump was inspired from the character of Kamal Haasan in this film.

A Timeless Masterpiece
TheOneWhoAbides17 June 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This without any doubt is one of the best telugu movies ever made and for that matter probably one of the best in the history of Indian cinema. Fantastic writing, fine camera work, great music and brilliant performances make this a timeless masterpiece. K.Viswanath is a great director, one of those few directors out there who can make some absolutely brilliant stuff. This one keeps you completely hooked from the beginning till the end. Absolutely class film making. One important thing which always plays a key role in the film is music and ilayaraja nails it for sure. Some great music blend with brilliant scenes keeps the film live all the time. By 'great music' i mean songs as well as the background score. And what makes this film even great is the brilliant performance of kamal hassan. Sheer brilliance in every scene. His performance makes you laugh and it makes you cry. This film was an official entry for the academy awards in 1986 from India. I just don't understand why it didn't make it to the Oscars. 'Forrest gump' (1994) won all the major categories at the academy awards that year. It was also about a mentally immature man played by tom hanks. But swathi muthyam was out way before 'forrest gump' and never falls behind at any point compared to 'forrest gump' except for visual effects. It really deserves the Oscar nod.

Every character in movie has done justice. I would like to appreciate director Viswanath, kamal Hasan, Radhika and all. The plot of the movie is simple which was taken by director in an awesome way using all the twenty four frames of movie. I have watched when I was kid and again l watched today and tried understanding every bit of the movie and got surprised by the vision of the director and artists in the movie. Viswanath lives on . His movies has to be added as course for the students who are interested in field of movies. I highly recommend everyone to watch this movie. I assure that you will be happy after watching it.
