Paul Anka, Newly-Minted Documentary Subject, Looks Back: Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, ‘Goodfellas,’ and More
Image
This can be written with great confidence: You know a Paul Anka song. Right now, you’re either thinking, “Well, yes, of course I do,” or you’re thinking, “I do not.” If you are in the latter group, you are wrong. There are, of course, his big hits like “Put Your Head on My Shoulder.” But then there are the songs he’s written for others, most notably “My Way,” which he wrote for Frank Sinatra and has been covered by Elvis, Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin, Sid Vicious, and countless others. It’s in the conversation for one of the most famous songs ever written.

That’s kind of the remarkable think about Paul Anka — who is at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, returning to his Canadian roots for the premiere of John Maggio’s documentary “Paul Anka: His Way” — that he’s written so many famous songs for others.

R.I.P.: Whitney Rydbeck of Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI has passed away at age 79
Image
Heartbreak comes frequently for Friday the 13th fans. The franchise has had a rough ride over the last couple decades, getting bogged down in legal issues and creative false stars. We get a video game, then the rug is pulled out from under it when it’s just getting started. A movie almost happens, then gets scrapped just weeks before filming was scheduled to begin. The Crystal Lake TV show was just a couple months from filming, then the showrunner gets fired. But worse than all of that is the fact that we’re in a time when actors from our beloved films are passing away very often. Just last month, we lost Erich Anderson, who was in the cast of Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter. Now Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI director Tom McLoughlin has broken the news that Whitney Rydbeck, who played the ill-fated paintball player Roy in his film,...

‘Copacabana’ hitmaker Barry Manilow doesn’t eat until he starts shaking with hunger
Image
Musician Barry Manilow, who is known for the chartbuster ‘Copacabana’, has opened up about his unhealthy habits admitting he often goes without food till he starts “trembling” and sees it as his body’s way of telling him to eat something.

He also revealed he goes to bed at midnight and is up at 4:00 a.m. every day, reports Female First UK.

He told The Hollywood Reporter: “I don’t eat and I don’t sleep. That’s also the trick (to staying in shape). I often find myself trembling and think: ‘Oh I should get some calories in me’.”

As per Female First UK, Manilow revealed he’s managed to quit smoking after years of puffing through three packs a day and now works out with a personal trainer every morning. During the interview, Manilow also admitted he thought he should have died six years ago because...

Looks Like He Made It: Barry Manilow at 80
Image
Barry Manilow is standing poolside at his Palm Springs home, a spectacular, eight-bedroom hillside villa with far-reaching views of the Coachella Valley. He’s taller than one might expect — a little over 6 feet — and rail-thin, which makes him appear even taller. Manilow is relaxed this morning, tapping one spindly leg to a tune wafting through the speakers — not one of those easy-listening grooves that made him a music superstar, but a thumping slice of techno called “Love Regenerator,” by Calvin Harris. He has an entire Spotify library of that stuff. Manilow, it turns out, loves dance music.

At 80 — he reached the milestone last June — Manilow is coming off of one of the busiest stretches of a consistent, six-decade career. In September, he played his 637th show at Las Vegas’ Westgate Resort Hotel — beating Elvis’ record of 636 performances on that very stage (when it was the Las Vegas Hilton) back in...

Barry Manilow Previews His NBC Special ‘A Very Barry Christmas’
Image
“Jingle bells.” “White Christmas.” “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” For his latest concert special, the legendary Barry Manilow doesn’t write all the songs that make the whole world sing — but he performs the heck out of these holiday standards. At 80, the crooner-composer is still going strong with a steady Las Vegas gig, a cover of Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” the new Broadway musical Harmony, and now A Very Barry Christmas. Manilow gives us a peek. What’s the Very Barry scoop? Barry Manilow: What I like most is that I figured out how to put in a handful of my hits with all the Christmas songs I’ve recorded over the years. (Credit: Ethan Miller/Getty Images) Which hits? I did a whole batch of them: “Mandy,” “Weekend in New England,” “Looks Like We Made It,” “I Write the Songs” and “Copacabana.” What’s...

Sticks and Stones (2008)
25 Years in La Part 3: Showtime, the Silverado, and the rise of Ain't It Cool
Sticks and Stones (2008)
The first and most important thing that happened as a result of the staging of "Sticks and Stones" at the Met Theater as part of the Act One Festival was that Scott Swan and I got our first agent. Barbara Baruch worked for Ambrosio/Mortimer, a smaller boutique agency at the time, and from the moment we met her, she seemed like what I imagined an agent to be. She was nurturing, she was a cheerleader, she was a ballbuster, and she was always, always, always in our corner. Our time with her was unfortunately too short, and by the time the agency imploded in accusations of embezzlement, we were already repped by Gersh out of New York. Barbara was first, though, and she was the first one to start pushing people to come see our show and to read our work. The strangest thing about those early days is...

The couple exchanged vows last year in front of family and friends at Manilow's Palm Springs home. Guests were surprised, not knowing they were actually being invited to a wedding. Manilow, 71, has never publicly discussed his sexual orientation, but in 2012 he told The Telegraph that he wasn't dating anyone. "Happily single? Yeah, happily single," he said. "I am a private guy. You can only come into my [...]...

Strictly Come Dancing: Steve Backshall exits the competition
Steve Backshall and professional dance partner Ola Jordan have become the eighth couple to be eliminated from Strictly Come Dancing.

The pair found themselves in the dance-off alongside Sunetra Sarker and Brendan Cole.

Backshall's Jive with Jordan earned the pair 23 points during last night's show (November 22), while Sarker's Waltz earned 30 points.

After the dance-off, Craig Revel Horwood decided to save Sarker, while Darcey Bussell sided with Backshall.

Bruno Tonioli saved Sarker, and head judge Len Goodman had the deciding vote and saved Sarker.

On leaving the competition Backshall said: "I don't think you can underestimate the achievement to take someone who was quite as bad as I was and get them to week nine!

"I am bursting with pride with what everyone has achieved."

The night also saw two musical performances from Barry Manilow, who sang 'Copacabana' and 'What a Wonderful World'.

Strictly Come Dancing continues next Saturday...

The director behind the first ever Doctor Who serial, Waris Hussein, is to be honoured at this year's Asian Media Awards.

The 75-year-old, who was tasked with launching the long-running BBC sci-fi drama with 'An Unearthly Child' in 1963 and returned to direct the fourth serial 'Marco Polo' a year later, will receive the Outstanding Contribution Award at the October 28 ceremony.

"I am honoured to be presented with this award which represents not only myself but, hopefully, those who will achieve their goals in their chosen fields in the future," said Hussein.

"I was one of the first Asians to be directing in television drama in the early '60s. I was nervous and aware of the importance of having been chosen from many other applicants for the job.

Nick Cannon, Barry Manilow and Megan Hilty celebrate the Fourth of July
As America celebrates its 237th birthday, some big names intend to help.

Several networks will hold to tradition Thursday, July 4, by offering star-studded Independence Day specials with an emphasis on music.

On PBS (check local listings), Barry Manilow will return to "A Capitol Fourth" as he joins fellow music icon Neil Diamond, former "Smash" co-star Megan Hilty, award-winning composer-conductor John Williams, "American Idol" winners Candice Glover and Scotty McCreery, Darren Criss ("Glee"), "America's Got Talent" alum Jackie Evancho, the National Symphony Orchestra, and host Tom Bergeron on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.

"America's Got Talent" also will be represented on NBC, as Nick Cannon -- that contest's host -- presides again over "Macy's Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular" in New York, with the musical guests including someone he knows quite well: his wife, recent "American Idol" judge Mariah Carey. Taylor Swift, Cher, Tim McGraw,...

Behind 'Glee's' Most Controversial Episode Yet
Jane Lynch, Lea Michele, Naya Rivera, Mark Salling, Matthew Morrison, Cory Monteith, Dianna Agron, Kevin McHale, Chris Colfer, Jenna Ushkowitz, Amber Riley, and Heather Elizabeth Morris in Glee (2009)
Note: Do not read on if you have not yet seen Season 4, Episode 18 of Fox's "Glee," "Shooting Star."

Even before the April 11th installment of "Glee" aired, there was controversy. And Lauren Potter, who plays Becky Jackson, can't say she didn't see it coming.

Nearly halfway into the episode -- which had a Newtown, Ct victims advocacy group urging "Glee" fans not to watch at all -- the New Directions heard gunshots in the hallways and locked themselves in the choir room. The space that was last filled with Barry Manilow's "Copacabana" and the zig-ah-zig-ah's of the Spice Girls was dark, silent and filled with tears.

Eventually, the McKinley High students were released and shortly thereafter, the audience learned that Sue Sylvester's favorite Cheerio and the ultimate sassy sidekick, Becky Jackson, was the one who brought the weapon to school.

Just before the gunshots deafened McKinley, Becky told Brittany...

"Glee" Recap: Zig-a-Zig-Ah!
Previously on Glee, Will Schuester learned that anchoring your grown-up emotional health onto a 19-year-old teenager is a proposition fraught with regret. Ryder explored the world of online dating and transphobia. Blaine Warbler rejoined the Cheerios in a double-crossing black-ops move intended to bring down Sue Sylvester from the inside. Also, and most importantly, he revealed the top/bottom dynamic between him and Kurt. They switch, Ok? They're switcherooers. Sometimes one is the top and other times the other one is the top and sometimes one is on one side an sometimes one is the other side and there are various shapes they make with their bodies and all of them are based on shared power and pleasure. Glee Review: Dirty Little Secrets
Due to the absence of Will Schuester at McKinley High, this week's Glee practice was almost cancelled. Overlooking the fact that Will has been Mia for the better part of the year, Sam and Blaine saved the day so the New Directions wouldn't have a week off from regionals practice.

The assignment of the week? Everyone had to perform their "Guilty Pleasures."

When Blaine discovered that Sam was hiding his pretty awesome talent for macaroni art portraits, he was inspired to make this week's theme all about exposing hidden passions. Sam and Blaine went with one of the classic guilty pleasures acts and kicked things off with a little Wham! Can I get a couple of "jitterbugs?"

Sam continued to express himself when he admitted that he's a hardcore Barry Manilow "fanilow." I've seriously not seen such a hardcore "fanilow" since Ethan Embry's character in Can't Hardly Wait. Remember...

‘Glee’ Recap: Blaine Admits That Sam’s His Guilty Pleasure
Plus, Rachel finds out the truth about Brody and New Directions slam Chris Brown.

After last week’s emotional episode (“Feud”) of Glee, it was refreshing to get a rather campy episode on March 21, where we got a taste of everyone’s “Guilty Pleasures.”

Blaine (Darren Criss) catches Sam (Chord Overstreet) stealing macaroni from the cafeteria and assumes he’s hard up for money. As Blaine tries to slip him fifty bucks, Sam confesses that he’s not poor, but likes to make macaroni portraits! He’s done Emma Stone, LeAnn Rimes, Ralph Macchio and even Kurt (Chris Colfer).

After Sam’s admission, he and Blaine get the idea to have New Directions cover songs that are guilty pleasures. Mr. Schue (Matthew Morrison) is out with “the flu,” so Blam is leading the group this week.

Brittany (Heather Morris) invites Kitty (Becca Tobin) onto her webcast show “Fondue For Two...

Glee Recap: The Guilty Pleasure Principle
Rachel Dratch at an event for Spring Breakdown (2009)
Call me crazy, but I don’t really understand the concept of guilty pleasures. Not to get all Lima Heights on you, but I likes what I likes — and I’ll tell ya what I want (what I really, really want) in my life and on my iPod, be it Spice Girls or Was (Not Was) or even Billie Piper.

And so it goes without saying that I had a blast watching tonight’s music-heavy installment of Glee, which centered around the New Directions’ kids confessing their hidden obsessions with Barry Manilow, Abba, Phil Collins, Wham, Bobby Brown and the Spice Girls.

'Glee' songs: What are the kids' 'Guilty Pleasures'?
This week's "Glee" is delving into an area of music with which it should be very familiar: "Guilty Pleasures." What do the kids listen to when no one's around? This collection of songs from the episode should give some clue.

The first guilty-pleasure song certainly deserves the title -- "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" by Wham!, sung by Blaine (Darren Criss) and Sam (Chord Overstrett)

Whatever your musical taste, Sam hit the musical nail right on the head. It's really impossible to consider Barry Manilow's "Copacabana" as anything other than a guilty pleasure. (Full disclosure: It's my go-to karaoke song. Fuller disclosure: I'm terrible at karaoke.)

Blaine's entry into the guilty-pleasure song fest is definitely, even if it's not a song that I personally would find pleasurable: "Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now") by Phil Collins.

This next song, "Wannabe" by the Spice Girls (as performed by Marley,...

Barry Manilow
Barry's Big Return
Barry Manilow
New York — It took a little while before Barry Manilow felt comfortable on Broadway.

The Man Who Makes the Whole World Sing is used to far bigger venues than the 1,710-seat St. James Theatre, one of the smaller theaters on the Great White Way.

"It's a totally different feeling from the stage. I'm in their laps; they're in my lap. It's very, very intimate," says Manilow. "This is like going to somebody's house."

Manilow – and his fans dubbed Fanilows – are clearly enjoying his first return to Broadway in nearly 25 years. Though his opening was postponed due to bronchitis, the singer sounded and looked great during a recent quick interview.

The New York City-born icon has had a street corner – at Seventh Ave. and 44th Street – temporarily renamed "Barry Manilow Way" and a caricature unveiled at Sardi's restaurant.

It's a long way from where he began in the neighborhood of Williamsburg in Brookyn,...

Teresa Giudice Denied Madonna Meeting
Teresa Giudice at an event for Amas de casa de New Jersey (2009)
Monday night, Madonna brought her Mdna tour to Madison Square Garden, performing to a sold-out crowd of 20,000.

However, one person in the audience, "Real Housewife of New Jersey" Teresa Giudice, wanted a private audience with the Queen of Pop after the show. Unfortunately for Giudice, Madonna did not want the same.

“Earlier in the evening Teresa and her friends were at the legendary Fresco By Scotto restaurant on West 52nd Street in Manhattan. They ordered all the best Italian dishes and were overheard talking about how they could get backstage passes after the show,” one of the diners tells me. “Who wouldn't want to get to hang out with Madonna? It’s a shame they had no idea Madonna doesn't do meet and greets for anyone, even a Real Housewife.”

Teresa was dining with Dana Levine, founder of the NephCure Foundation, the organization Teresa supported on Celebrity Apprentice, who also...

New York — Looks like Barry Manilow is making it again – on Broadway.

Manilow started smoking at nine
Barry Manilow started smoking at the age of nine. The 'Copacabana' singer gave up the habit 20 years ago after beginning at an early age in the tough New York neighbourhood he grew up in. Despite quitting, Barry recently started inhaling from electronic cigarettes after smoking a real cigarette in Las Vegas. He said: ''Well I smoked for 30 years. I started when I was nine years old. I grew up in Brooklyn. ''Then I stopped about 15, 20 years ago. Then I just started in Las Vegas and the band and I went down to a little club and somebody...

Top 10 Restaurants In Crime Film
Crime films often make me hungry. Often the restaurant scenes are among the best remembered in crime flicks. The coffee shops and Italian kitchens and juke joints where criminal characters go to grab a bite or do dirt serve to define them.

In some cases, it’s because crime films are a sit-down with a distinct culture, and there’s little better distinction for culture than food. It says more than a monologue. These places are home to some criminals, an escape for others, doom for a few. They’re some of the best moments of bad stories.

And these are the best among them.

10. Tipitina’s

Appeared in: The Big Easy (pictured above)

City: New Orleans, La

Price: $

Crime Scene: Lagniappe (That’s New Orleans for “kick back”)

Tip’s is the perfect Crescent City hot-spot if you’re looking for a nightlife scene that spices top-talent home-cooked music with a high-crime-rate neighborhood.
