interesting period piece,1980s music and cold war danger.

I really enjoyed this BBC play when it was first shown,I still have a tape somewhere of when it was repeated. Without giving the plot away it involves a shy nerdy young RAF man, played by Reece Dinsdale,he meets an attractive young barmaid played by Nicola Cowper. They are somehow attracted to each other, can they ever have a relationship? There story is played out against the background of a big military exercise. There is alcohol abuse, violence, sex and birdwatching. People who have been in the RAF tell me it is very realistic picture of the RAF in the 1980s. I was impressed by this when I saw it,Nicola Cowper is the star here but I am surprised that she has never progressed much in her career. She was a regular in Dangerfield but has not had many TV parts since then. If you ever get the chance to see this, watch it,I don't suppose it will be on again unless UKTV DRAMA channel show it,but they show stuff like TERRY AND JUNE,how is that Drama?

Unrealised potential
garax22 April 2008
This is a very sweet film - from I think the Film 4 strand of the mid 80's. Neither lead fulfilled their potential but its particularly surprising that Nicola Cowper has ended up living with a convicted robber and murderer - that can't be easy. Seems a real waste to me.

The premise is pretty simple - telling the story of a barmaid and the young airman who forms an attachment to her. Things are of course far from straight forward. In the background to this are recent military campaigns such as the Falklands Conflict making the idea of actually being called into action seems the more likely and thus the stakes that much higher.

Very Good Acting By Beverley Hewitt
detlevba28 January 2006
I've watched this film almost 10 times, i heard of it from a very good friend at work, one character to watch out for is Lara played by the lovely Beverley Hewitt, its sad that she no longer acts as she is by far the better actress in the whole movie, the dialogue is well spoken, the accent captures the tones perfectly,I have since found out that Beverley used to do children's TV, presenting the untied shoelaces show in the early 80s for Scottish TV, and was in Garnoch Way a TV series in the late 80s. The acting world is not the same without Beverley, come back and show them how its done Beverley. get a part in River City. You have just got to watch The Winter flight, forget about Sean bean, the real acting is done by Beverley.
