‘Beatles ‘64’ Review: Disney+ Doc Skillfully Shows How Beatlemania Struck America
Image
In an interview with music producer Danny Bennett in David Tedeschi’s documentary “Beatles ’64,” we see that the Beatles have always been a marketing juggernaut. Bennett shows us Beatles nylons, a Beatles dress, Beatles sneakers, and perhaps the most bizarre item upon which to slap the Fab Four’s faces, Beatles talcum powder.

While it’s easy to be cynical about “Beatles ’64” as just another thing to sell that repackages the iconic group, it’s important to remember that just because there are a lot of Beatles products, that doesn’t mean all products are created equal or that they instantly cheapen the band’s music.

Thankfully, “Beatles ’64” is far more worthwhile than Beatles talcum powder.

Working off footage shot by legendary documentarians Albert and David Maysles, “Beatles ’64” focuses on the Beatles’ first trip to America in February 1964. That two-week tour included the group’s unforgettable debut on “The Ed Sullivan Show,...

‘Masked Singer’ Picked This Week of All Weeks to Feature ‘Rock You Like A Hurricane’
Image
It's Sports Night on tomorrow's edition of The Masked Singer, with guests Joel McHale and Nikki Glaser on hand as ringside announcers for a makeshift boxing match. In Fox's preview clip, McHale brays, “It’s a great day to play a guessing game!”

“Oh yes,” agrees Glaser. “And look — the fight is about to start!”

Robin Thicke and Rita Ora dance into the ring wearing silk boxing robes, raring to kick off the show with corner help from Ken Jeong and Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg. Thicke bites his lip and strokes his air guitar before breaking into a rousing version of… “Rock You Like A Hurricane”? Really?

Yep, with the death toll from Hurricane Milton at 24 and counting, Fox chose this week to lead off a reality show with a 1984 Scorpions rocker referencing killer storms. The next time Califonia loses houses to muddy avalanches, should we expect a cover of Stevie...

10 best John Lennon lead vocals for The Beatles, ranked
Image
Over 40 years after his tragic death on December 8, 1980, John Lennon‘s music, both with The Beatles and in his solo career, is fondly remembered by fans who were there at the time and has gained admiration with every new generation that has come along. In addition, Lennon’s writing and particularly his vocals have been held in high esteem by music critics around the world for decades.

The Oscar and Grammy winner’s contribution to the band shifted as the band passed from genre to genre — from pop idols to sound experimenters to psychedelia and finally to political activism — and he adapted his vocals to meet each of those needs. From his joyous vocals on “A Hard Day’s Night” to his slightly-high work on “Strawberry Fields Forever” to the rollicking “Twist and Shout,” Lennon’s range with the band was remarkable.

Please keep in mind that the list below is...

Bruce Springsteen Releases Live Album of Historic Set at Asbury Park’s Sea.Hear.Now. Fest
Image
Just days after Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band delivered an instantly classic set in Asbury Park, New Jersey for the Sea.Hear.Now Festival, the performance has been released as a live album, available on CD and streaming via the live music platform nugs.net.

The set, which take place on September 15th, was a homecoming of sorts for Springsteen and the E Street Band, who first got their start gigging around the Asbury Park area. Among its 30-song setlist were hits like “Dancing in the Dark” and “Born to Run,” plus bust-outs, like the tour premieres of “Blinded by the Light,” “Does This Bus Stop at 82nd Street?”, “4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy),” and more.

Bruce Springsteen Delivers Instant Classic Set at Asbury Park’s Sea.Hear.Now Fest
Image
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band gave Asbury Park, New Jersey a show to remember with an epic headlining set at Sea.Hear.Now festival on Sunday night.

The show was a homecoming for Springsteen and the band, who got their start playing gigs in and around Asbury Park in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Appropriately, the first half of the Sea.Hear.Now setlist leaned heavily into material from Springsteen’s debut album, Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J., as well as other Jersey-centric songs. Notably, Springsteen performed tracks like “Blinded by the Light,” “Does This Bus Stop at 82nd Street?,” “Thundercrack,” and “4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)” for the first time in nearly a decade.

Elsewhere in the set, Springsteen was joined by his wife, Patti Scialfa, for a performance of “Tougher Than the Rest.” Scialfa recently revealed that she...

Celebrating ‘A Hard Day’s Night’ at 60: The Beatles debut in a fun-filled romp
Image
Six decades ago, we were in the throes of Beatlemania. The Fab Four scored their first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart “I Want to Hold Your Hand” on Feb. 1. And the U.S. got to meet The Beatles, four lads from Liverpool when they invaded the U.S. that month making three historic appearances on CBS’ “The Ed Sullivan Show.” They were met with the screams of young girls with burgeoning hormones. By April 4, they had the top five singles on the chart: “Can’t Buy Me Love,” “Twist and Shout,” “She Loves You,” “I Want to Hold Your Hand” and “Please Please Me.”

Despite their extraordinary success, hopes weren’t high for their first film, “A Hard Day’s Night,” which opened in the U.S. on Aug. 11. Most films starring a group or singer du jour were horrible. So much so, the New York Times’ Bosley Crowther was in...

True Detective fans were divided over Issa Lpez' conceptual approach towards Night Country. The showrunner took criticisms in stride and shared her straightforward method of dealing with haters.

True Detective: Night Country showrunner Issa Lpez expounded on her inspiration for the season in an interview with Variety. She said author Arthur Conan Doyle was her guide and actor Jodie Foster was her muse while writing the story. Recalling the moment she was asked to helm Season 4 of the HBO series, she noted the first season was the reason she said yes to the offer. Lpez confirmed she had the setting and protagonists of the season decided in her early pitch to executives, who in turn were impressed by the concept.

Every Song In True Detective: Night Country & When They Play
Image
True Detective season 4 blurs the lines between the supernatural and material world, while delving into the personal demons of hardened detectives. The talented cast, including Jodie Foster, lends depth to the gripping narrative and well-written character beats. The show's soundtrack further enhances the chilling atmosphere and thrills of its crime drama.

Other than walking through a compelling mystery drama that unfolds in a small Alaskan city, True Detective: Night Country also features scintillating tracks that perfectly complement its pivotal moments. Like every new season in the True Detective series, season 4 introduces a whole new roster of characters and a self-contained storyline. At the same time, it also draws several subtle references to True Detective season 1, hinting that it unfolds in the same universe where Rust and Marty had once teamed up.

Like season 1, True Detective season 4 not only blurs the lines between the supernatural and the material world but also...

Bruce Springsteen Treats Columbus, Ohio to Epic 30-Song Set Full of Surprises
Image
There have already been several high points on Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band’s 2024 tour, and Sunday night’s show in Columbus, Ohio, provided another one.

The Boss and co. turned in an epic three-hour, 30-song set that saw “Youngstown,” “Streets of Fire,” and “I’m Goin’ Down” all performed live for the first time since at least 2017. The choice to kick off the show with “Youngstown” was especially appropriate as it was written about Youngstown, Ohio, located just two-and-half hours away from Columbus. Meanwhile, “Streets of Fire” has only been performed by Springsteen 23 times since 1978, and not since 2017.

The setlist also included “Racing in the Street,” which was played thanks to a sign request. Springsteen and the E Street Band wrapped the show with an epic nine-song run that included (in order): “The Rising,” “Badlands,” “Thunder Road,” “Born to Run,” “Rosalita,...

I Think We Can Officially Say Bruce Springsteen is Back
Image
If you needed any proof that Bruce Springsteen is fully recovered from health ailments that derailed his 2023 tour (some of which may or may not have been the result of Larry David), look no further than the performance he and the E Street Band turned in at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California on Thursday night.

The show ran a grand total of three hours and 18 minutes and featured a sprawling 32-song setlist including several tracks that hadn’t been played live in close to a decade. What’s more, Springsteen’s wife, Patti Scialfa, made her first appearance on the 2024 leg of the tour, joining her husband for performances of “Tougher Than the Rest” and “Fire.”

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band Get Loose in Los Angeles

Three hours into Bruce Springsteen’s epic return to Los Angeles on Thursday night with the E Street Band, he stared down the sold-out crowd at the Forum. “Do you have anything left?” he shouted, midway through “Twist and Shout,” the second-to-last song of his first L.A. show in eight years. Five decades in, the magic of a Springsteen show remains: He always seems to have a little bit left in the tank.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band Kick Off 2024 Tour: Setlist + Video

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band kicked off their 2024 tour with a blazing 29-song performance at Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona on Tuesday night. It marked the band’s first performance since Springsteen was forced to postpone the remainder of the band’s 2023 tour due to a bout with peptic ulcer disease.

Thankfully, The Boss now appears to be fully recovered. The 29-song set stuck closely to the epic shows Springsteen played towards the end of his 2023 run, including performances of “Night,” “Darlington County,” “Darkness on the Edge of Town,” “Spirit in the Night,” “Mary’s Place,” and “Backstreets.” Once again, the encore proved particularly stellar, featuring “Born To Run,” “Rosalita (Come Out Tonight),” “Glory Days,” “Dancing in the Dark,” and “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out.”

Meet the Beatles: Let’s revisit their first landmark appearance on ‘The Ed Sullivan Show’
Image
The Beatles made their first of three appearances on CBS’ “The Ed Sullivan Show” on Feb 9, 1964. Sullivan knew he had a really big “shew” that night, telling the audience mainly of teeny-boppers and teenage girls that “our theater’s been jammed with newspapermen and hundreds of photographers from all over the world. And these veterans agree with me that the city never has witnessed the excitement stirred by these youngsters from Liverpool…Now tonight you’re going to be twice entertained by them…Ladies and gentlemen, The Beatles.”

Their fans screamed, cried and grabbed their hair when John, Paul, George and Ringo performed “All My Loving,” “Till There Was You” and “She Loves You.” They came back 35 minutes later in the show to sing “I Saw Her Standing There” and their No. 1 hit “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” The ratings for the episode scored to 23.24 million households. Beatlemania was sweeping America before Feb.

Why Holden & The Polar Bear Keep Coming Back In Jodie Foster's True Detective Story
Image
Warning! Contains major spoilers for True Detective season 4.

Recurring scenes of Holden and a polar bear symbolize Liz Danvers' grief and emotional connection to her son in True Detective: Night Country. Liz's subconscious guilt and feelings of inadequacy towards her son's death are represented by the one-eyed polar bear in the show. The polar bear's appearance also symbolizes Liz's journey towards healing from trauma, guilt, and grief in True Detective: Night Country.

Recurring scenes of Holden and a one-eyed polar bear in True Detective: Night Country make it hard not to wonder what they symbolize in Liz Danvers' overarching storyline. Like all the previous installments of the True Detective series, season 4 initially hooks viewers by introducing a gripping murder mystery and two hardened cop characters. The more the season progresses, the more personal the murder mystery becomes for the two characters because it somehow ties into their past and unveils their long-buried traumas.

A John Carpenter Horror Classic Gets A Shout-Out In True Detective: Night Country
Image
Issa López's "True Detective: Night Country," the fourth season of the pulp crime series created by Nic Pizzolatto, kicks off with one heck of a hook. Scientists holed up at the Tsalal Research Station on the outskirts of Ennis, Alaska (which is itself on the outskirts of civilization in the sparsely populated state) are winding down after a long day of doing ... well, whatever it is they do up there (the first episode does not make this clear). They're doing laundry, making dinner, settling in for a movie ("Ferris Bueller's Day Off") with a bowl of microwave popcorn, and evidently content to be where they are.

And then, in an instant, they're not there anymore.

A delivery man who shows up with supplies, expecting help in unloading his truck, wanders through the station seemingly seconds after the sequence we've just observed (Matthew Broderick is still rocking out to The...

When Ferris Bueller's Day Off Actually Takes Place (All 3 Dates Explained)
Image
Where to Watch Powered by The timeline of Ferris Bueller's Day Off is unclear due to the incorporation of real events, but possible dates include June 5, 1985, September 21, 1985, and September 24, 1985. June 5, 1985 is a contender because it aligns with the baseball game scene, but discrepancies in the footage make it less likely. September 21, 1985 is also a strong possibility due to the Von Steuben Parade scene and the filming date, which matches the festival's date.

Among the most iconic coming-of-age films in the 1980s, Ferris Bueller's Day Off is at the top of the list for its fun concept and many memorable moments, however what day did the snarky titular character actually take off from school? Bruce Springsteen set to rock Hyde Park after 11 years

Los Angeles, June 29 (Ians) Rock music legend Bruce Springsteen is returning to London’s Hyde Park — where he was famously cut off 11 years ago — in July.

But this time, the organisers said, ‘The Boss’ will not be silenced. Bruce is going to take stage earlier, at around 7 p.m., so his ‘notoriously’ long set won’t run over and fall foul of the 10.30 p.m. curfew dedaline, reports ‘The Mirror’.

A source said the scheduling would ensure that the icon gets to play all his hits with no interruption when he takes to the stage next on July 6 and July 8.

The source told ‘The Mirror’, “Fans needn’t worry… There will be plenty of time to hear what will be two historic sets.”

The 73-year-old, whose hits include ‘Born In The U.S.A.’, ‘Dancing In The Dark’, and ‘Streets of Philadelphia’, among many others, last played at the Hyde...

With a 4.8 score on our part, this particular installment was a standout because there was a lot of forward movement for many of the characters.

The controversy with Ross and Sullivan came to a head,...

Matthew Broderick And John Hughes Didn't Get Along On The Ferris Bueller Set
Image
"Ferris Bueller's Day Off" remains the quintessential '80s story of teenage suburban revolt almost forty years after it was released. Matthew Broderick had already appeared on Broadway and made his big screen debut with "War Games" and the criminally under-seen medieval fantasy romance "Ladyhawke." But it was his role as a dashing high school rebel that sent his career into the stratosphere.

With all the natural charisma Broderick gave Ferris, it seemed perfectly reasonable that his character would be able to stay home, play sick, and skip school while still being the perfect son and the most popular kid in high school. Ferris made kids everywhere think they could do anything -- even jump on board a parade float lip-synching "Twist and Shout" in front of a roaring crowd. Everyone wanted to either be Ferris or be around him, and Broderick was electric in the part.

It was a different story,...

‘It was break or bust’: Abbey Road, throat lozenges, and the frenetic making of the first Beatles album
Image
It’s 10pm on Monday 11 February 1963, and as the Abbey Road clock ticks down the final minutes of an exhausting 12-hour session, John Lennon strips to the waist, doses up on Zubes throat lozenges and throws himself into one final death-or-glory charge into rock’n’roll history.

“The last song nearly killed me,” he’d say later, recalling that last-minute take of “Twist and Shout”, which The Beatles managed to squeeze into the closing seconds of the one-day recording session for their debut album Please Please Me. A second take was abandoned as Lennon’s voice gave out altogether after a full day of howling and harmonising, powering through on throat sweets, milk and the ferocious Hamburg spirit that had seen them through countless late-night rock’n’roll marathons at the Kaiserkeller. “My voice wasn’t the same for a long time after,” he said. “Every time I swallowed it was like sandpaper.

The 35 greatest debut albums of all time, from Arctic Monkeys to Joy Division
Image
People often talk about second album syndrome, and the pressures that follow a great first record. Often it can overshadow conversation around the debut itself: “Brilliant album… shame about the second one.”

But while it’s true that many an artist has struggled to meet expectations after a triumphant beginning, it shouldn’t take away from the achievements made on those first records. They serve as statements of intent and have the power to change or reshape the industry, inspire fellow musicians, and drive essential conversation about our understanding of music.

Whether it’s the rock on The Strokes’ much-hyped 2001 album Is This It or the rap prowess of Notorious Big on Ready to Die, introducing a genre to the rest of the world via Daft Punk’s Homework or creating a new one entirely with Black Sabbath – debut albums can take a previously unknown artist and lift them up to global adulation.

How Denver’s Live Music Scene Exploded
Nathaniel Rateliff
In our new series, we look at eight cities where live music has exploded — from legendary hubs like New Orleans and Nashville and Chicago, to rising hot spots like Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Portland, Maine. The first city we’re spotlighting: Denver, where nearby Red Rocks is only the beginning of the rising music destination.

Perhaps no performer has embodied Denver’s past decade more than native Nathaniel Rateliff; at its start, he was playing in a basement bar to 25 people; by its end, he had sold out multi-night stints at Red Rocks.
