Anyone who’s seen John Carpenter’s 1996 sequel “Escape From L.A.” knows that, in the past, the filmmaker’s feelings about the City of Angels have been mixed, to put it mildly. They’re epitomized by a scene in which Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) is enjoying a brief moment of relative peace in the earthquake-ravaged ruins of the city, after almost having his body parted out by the Surgeon General of Beverly Hills (Bruce Campbell), when his running mate of the moment (Valeria Golino) looks at him and observes, “Once you figure out this place, it’s really not so bad.” She is immediately shot in the back..
While Carpenter has occasionally been metaphorically wounded by the slings, arrows and bullets of the city’s entertainment-industrial complex, he’s managed to survive. And in the lead-up to receiving his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on April 3, he’s...

In Dan Farah’s The Age of Disclosure, one of the buzziest documentaries to premiere at SXSW this year, it takes interviews with 34 people from all levels of government and military to make the case that we’re not alone in the universe, and that we should all be paranoid about the vast conspiracy keeping civilians from finding out.
In Robert Stone’s Starman, premiering at SXSW to generally less buzz, only one person is interviewed, but he makes his own case for why we’re not alone, using this conviction to reflect on several decades of human progress and the fact that, no matter what else is happening out in the stars, we only have one Earth.
I’m not really valorizing one philosophical mindset over the other, nor exactly stating a preference for one filmmaking approach or the other. I’m just noting that while The Age of Disclosure...

When I was four, my parents took me to a planetarium for the first time. It was a huge one, in Chicago; it seemed as big as space itself. I enjoyed many more visits to planetariums over the years, but none could ever match the experience I had when I was four. I looked up at that epic black domed sky and thought the stars and planets were real. I felt in sync with them, almost part of them, enthralled, immersed, and wonderstruck.
That’s the sensation I had watching “Starman.” It’s a documentary about space exploration that puts you in touch with your inner wide-eyed child. It’s the intergalactic meditation as blissed-out mind-bender. The film’s director, Robert Stone, made what I consider to be the single greatest documentary about the American space program — the six-hour-long “Chasing the Moon,” which was shown on PBS in 2019. It was a film that explored,...

Depending on who you ask, Arizona is known as The Grand Canyon State and The Copper State. But if you ask us, it should also be called The Grand Cinema State or The Celluloid State, based on its proud filmmaking history. Given its proximity to Hollywood and stunning scenery that stretches for miles in every direction, Arizona has been the filming location for westerns, science fiction films, and pretty much every genre under the desert sun. In fact, Old Tucson Studios is known as the "Hollywood In The Desert," and was the site of movies and TV shows like "The Bells of St. Mary's, "Rio Bravo," "Gunsmoke," "Little House on the Prairie," and "Three Amigos!"
You're probably thinking, "Wait a minute, wasn't 'Three Amigos!' set in Mexico, 'Rio Bravo' in Texas, 'Bells of St. Mary's in the inner city?" Yep, you're right on all counts. From "Planet of the Apes,...

A new live-action Dungeons & Dragons series, “The Forgotten Realms“, is now in development at Netflix. Deadline reports that the upcoming series has some heavy hitters behind it.
Producer Shawn Levy is teaming with writer/showrunner Drew Crevello (The Grudge 2) and Hasbro Entertainment for “The Forgotten Realms”.
Plot details are scarce at this time, but the series “will take place in the iconic campaign setting and centerpiece of the Dungeons & Dragons universe, a fantasy world that is home to some of the brand’s most famous characters and launchpad for some of D&d’s most popular adventures.”
What’s more is that “The Forgotten Realms“ was initially announced two years ago under a different streamer. “The Forgotten Realms“ received a straight-to-series order in early 2023 with eOne co-producing alongside Paramount Pictures, the studio behind the charming Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. We’ve discussed John Carpenter on this channel as much or more than nearly any other director. Some of his movies, like The Thing, have gotten a different type of show appreciation via discussions on its behind the scenes in a Wtf, a comparison with its novella source material, and a look at what its legacy is in a Deconstructing video, amongst a few others. Looking at his catalogue, there is a wealth of stuff that is firmly in the horror realm from Christine to In the Mouth of Madness, Prince of Darkness to Halloween. While he has some movies that are outside that wheelhouse like the western homage Assault on Precinct 13 or Academy Award winning sci-fi drama Starman, Escape from New York is something special. In addition to being one of my favorite films of all time, full stop, it’s also sneaky in its ability to horrify. While...

James Gunn's previous experience in the superhero genre, directing films both in the Dceu and the MCU, will help him and Peter Safran restart the Dcu franchise. At the same time, the filmmaker will not rely heavily on his previous films for the first entry in the franchise, 2025's Superman.
The Dcu has mapped up the upcoming media that will be a part of Chapter 1: Gods & Monsters, which started with the animated series Creature Commandos and the upcoming feature film Superman. Gunn's previously directed titles like Peacemaker, The Suicide Squad, and the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, which shared his peculiar sense of humor. Filmmaker and DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn has not yet released the first trailer for his upcoming Superman movie, and it remains unclear what kind of music he'll be choosing to use for the film along with its promotional materials. While no songs have been confirmed at this point, Gunn can name three songs he won't be including in the film.
On the social media platform Threads, Gunn answered three different fans asking if certain songs would be included in the movie, assuring each one that they would not. When one fan said that a montage in the film set to Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now" would "be everything," Gunn responded, "It's been done too often I think." When another fan asked him politely to not use "Holding Out for a Hero" by Bonnie Tyler, Gunn noted, "Don't worry." When one fan said that a montage in the film set to Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now" would "be everything," Gunn responded, "It's been done too often I think." When another fan asked him politely to not use "Holding Out for a Hero" by Bonnie Tyler, Gunn noted, "Don't worry." Someone else then requested Gunn similarly stay away from David Bowie's "Starman,...

While many children of famous actors follow their parents into the profession, it is pretty rare that the child equals or surpasses the achievements of their parent. A few names come to mind: Jane Fonda, Michael Douglas, Angelina Jolie. And Jeff Bridges definitely belongs on that list.
His father was the highly successful actor Lloyd Bridges, who appeared in over 100 films and starred in multiple TV series including the popular “Sea Hunt.” Jeff’s brother is the Emmy Award-winning actor Beau Bridges.
Jeff’s career had an auspicious start when he earned an Oscar nomination at age 22 for his second film “The Last Picture Show.” Still regarded as a classic, the film featured an all-star cast of experienced performers and introduced a bunch of new young actors such as Cybill Shepherd, Timothy Bottoms, Sam Bottoms and Bridges.

It’s always interesting to see big time directors go against type and into a genre we don’t necessarily associate them with. We have Mount Rushmore type horror directors like John Carpenter and Wes Craven giving us thoughtful entries into their catalogues like Starman and Music of the Heart. On the flip side of that, what happens when a director known for Oscar worthy drama, gangster, and period piece movies goes all in on a scary movie? How did that movie miss out on any major awards nominations even with it being considered prestige horror? How many different adaptations of Denis Lehane’s novel would we get? Take the boat over before the storm hits as we find out what happened to Shutter Island.
Denis Lehane is an American author who began writing in the early 1990s. While he had success with a series of novels with repeating characters early,...

The glam rock icon David Bowie may have had countless hit songs beloved by rock fans worldwide, but the truth was he had a complex relationship with his first hit single. Space Oddity was the track that put Bowie on the map, as its themes of alienation, loneliness, and space travel helped lay the foundations for his alien-like reputation as The Man Who Fell to Earth. While Bowie would continue to explore themes of time and space as the years progressed, notable as Ziggy Stardust in songs like Starman, his feelings toward the story of Major Tom were more complicated.
Bowie was an artist in the truest sense of the word, as he used his music to break down social and political boundaries, normalize LGBTQ+ representation, and become a style icon who left an undeniable mark on the entire fashion industry. Bowie was just 19 years old when he hit it big with Space Oddity,...

After a generic DVD run and Blu-rays released outside the U.S. market under the name Ragman, Synapse Films has answered the prayers of many horror-metal fans with the recent 4K release of 1986’s Trick or Treat. Having “No Wimps” and “No False Metal,” this film is considered by many to be the quintessential heavy metal horror flick, partially thanks to a perfectly apropos soundtrack provided by the band Fastway.
After constantly being harassed by the cool kids at his high school, Eddie Weinbauer aka “Ragman” finds solace in listening to the music of his idol Sammi Curr to get through the abuse. Not only is he a famous heavy metal star, but Curr is also an alum at Eddie’s high school where he became an outcast-made-good into metal stardom. In the early nineties, Chevy Chase was at a crossroads. He’d headlined a series of comedy hits in the eighties, including the National Lampoon’s Vacation films, two Fletch movies, and a few others, but he had some brutal flops, too. Funny Farm (underrated) and Caddyshack 2 did poorly, but Nothing But Trouble in 1991 was a nearly career-ending disaster for all involved. Suddenly, Chase’s future as a leading man looked bleak. Rather than double down on another comedy, he opted to stretch, signing on to star in a comic thriller in the vein of one of his first big hits, Foul Play, Memoirs of an Invisible Man, which was to feature cutting-edge special effects, and sports direction by one of the biggest genre directors of the time, John Carpenter.

Because Jeff Bridges has so completely and successfully embraced the craggy old man persona over the past 20 years, as seen in the television series The Old Man, its easy to forget Bridges previous career as the handsome, open-faced, sandy-haired star of such films as The Last Picture Show, Starman, and Tron, among many others. However, while Bridges excelled in a wide variety of genres and roles throughout his earlier career, the basic cheerfulness and transparency of his younger screen persona made it difficult for audiences to see this version of Bridges as a villain. This changed with the 1985 thriller film Jagged Edge, in which Bridges plays a San Francisco newspaper publisher who is charged with the gory stabbing murder of Jacks socialite wife.
Jagged Edge delights in framing the possible guilt or innocence of Bridges character, Jack Forrester, in equally convincing terms. Specifically, in terms of forcing audiences, while faced with contrasting pieces of evidence,...

Half a century into his directorial career, John Carpenter will be honored by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.
The legendary horror director has been selected to receive Lafca’s Career Achievement Award during the organization’s 50th annual awards show this year, which will take place January 11, 2025 at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles.
“The LA Film Critics Association was one of the very first groups to present me an award, so I’m truly honored by this recognition,” said Carpenter in a statement. “For a horror guy like me, this really warms my heart, and it also shows just how important horror is as a genre, which the Los Angeles Film Critics Association has known for decades.”

Genre filmmaking legend John Carpenter has recently taken to Letterboxd to write some frank reviews of his own movies and others. The results are incredible.
Having made some of the greatest genre movies ever made, John Carpenter has quite deservedly shifted down a gear or two over the past decade or so. These days, he’s keeping himself busy with his music, playing videogames (he really loves Fallout 76), holding the occasional mercurial interview with the press – and, as it turns out, writing the odd review on Letterboxd.
Brilliantly, as spotted by Twitter’s Haunted Hippie (via our own John Moore), Carpenter has even cast his jaded eye over his own movies. Take Halloween II, for example, which he’s long admitted he wrote for the money. Here’s his Letterboxd review:
They paid me more money than I had ever seen to write a sequel to a film that did not need one.

Ahead of a reissue of Ziggy Stardust mixed in Atmos sound, a new music video for the album’s “Starman” pairs the song with previously unseen footage shot by Mick Rock.
The famed photographer shot the footage in 1972 and ’73 as Bowie toured in support of the album. The clip includes close-ups of the artists’ shiny red boots and fans’ hands reaching up toward the stage as guitarist Mick Ronson edged closer, as well as unusual perspectives of Bowie and his plume of hot-red hair singing the song in color and black and white.

Jeff Bridges was at the height of his powers as a movie star at the tail end of the 1980s, as he had proven to be a huge draw for the general audience and a respected actor among awards voters. Although Bridges had been a part of the New Hollywood movement in the 1970s with his brilliant work in The Last Picture Show and Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, he transitioned into appearing in larger budget science fiction spectacles in the 1980s, including Tron and Starman. It was due to the clout that Bridges had within the industry that he was able to take a chance on a risky project, and team up with the legendary filmmaker Hal Ashby to make an old-fashioned neo-noir thriller. Unfortunately, 8 Million Ways To Die was a massive critical and financial disappointment that has a rare 0% approval on Rotten Tomatoes.

Not every actor is a Samuel L. Jackson, gladly signing an extensive superhero movie contract to play Nick Fury as many times as Marvel Studios wants him. Some are more like James Bond actor George Lazenby, securing an iconic part and then instantly worrying it'll cause typecasting. Meanwhile, some stars can't get along with the studio, while others, unfortunately, die before the role has run its course. No property or individual movie is immune to the possibility of recasting. It's just that some do it a lot better than others.
In the sci-fi realm, long-running franchises often pose unique casting challenges, but others are simply so difficult or so weird that they necessitated unexpected changes. The multiverse offers more recasting possibilities than most, as "Doctor Who" and its endless regenerations -- a sci-fi solution to a real-world problem -- regularly demonstrates. How the fans, the actors, and the studio react cannot always be predicted,...

Jeff Bridges made his unofficial screen debut in John Cromwell's 1951 drama "The Company She Keeps" just over a year after he was born. The son of actors Dorothy and Lloyd Bridges, he steadily proved himself a nepo baby of the finest order upon reaching young adulthood. In the 50 years and change since then, he's done it all, be it squaring off with King Kong, riding a light cycle on The Grid, or seeking compensation for the damage to his prized rug. (It really tied his living room together.) He even snagged a long-expected Oscar for playing an alcoholic country singer in Scott Cooper's "Crazy Heart," a film that arrived on the heels of Bridges portraying the first-ever Marvel Cinematic Universe villain in "Iron Man."
Trying to decide which of Bridges' movies stands out above the rest is a formidable challenge. It's also one that we, thankfully, need not...

Nico Mastorakis has an uncanny ability of pulling ideas from various sources and running them through the Cuisinart of his peculiar sensibility, producing something altogether idiosyncratic. The six films assembled in Arrow Video’s new box set—one evocative religious allegory and five bawdy action comedies—testify to Mastorakis’s skills as a pop-cultural bricoleur. As a result, they serve as a series of variably amusing time capsules, deploying plenty of medium-specific references that might just delight viewers who came of age in the 1980s and early ’90s. Others will have to spend some time doing due diligence on Wikipedia.

Special effects master and creature creator Stan Winston is best known for making the monsters seen in such hit films as "The Terminator," "Invaders from Mars," "Aliens," "Alien Nation," "Predator," "Jurassic Park," "Congo," and "The Relic." He also provided makeup and other eerie beings for "The Thing," "Starman," "Edward Scissorhands," "Batman Returns," and "The Island of Dr. Moreau." He received an Oscar nomination in 1982 for his work on the robot comedy "Heartbeeps." His monsters indelibly changed genre cinema for decades, and his death in 2008 was an immeasurable loss.

The genius of David Bowie didn’t lie so much in how he reinvented his personae but in how he concealed their formations from the world. During the space of about a presidential term, Bowie went from Marc Bolan’s personal mime to a coffeehouse space oddity before settling on Ziggy Stardust, the androgynous alien hero of his classic 1972 album, sent from Mars to liberate the people of Earth from their hangups. The changes arrived at an alarming speed, and he’d cycle through two or three more characters before the Seventies ended.

My favorite scene in the hilarious new film “The Fall Guy” is the one where Emily Blunt (recent Best Supporting Actress Oscar nominee for “Oppenheimer”) belts out the Phil Collins classic “Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)” as Ryan Gosling (recent Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominee for “Barbie”) finds himself in a particularly dramatic — and dangerous — sequence of events.
As Blunt sang with all her heart, I couldn’t help but think of how perfect the timing was.
Forty years ago this very month, the famous power ballad had just completed a three-week reign on top of the Billboard Hot 100. “Against All Odds” was the title song from the romantic thriller starring Jeff Bridges, Rachel Ward and James Woods. The Taylor Hackford-directed movie was met with solid reviews and healthy ticket sales. But its most notable success was Collins’s song, which quickly took the Billboard chart by storm.

Hollywood legend Jeff Bridges is widely known for his characters such as the lovable stoner Jeff Lebowski at the center of The Big Lebowski or Rooster Cogburn in an Oscar-winning turn in the remake of True Grit. But, almost 40 years ago, Bridges was a young actor with swagger who played Jack Forrester in the 1985 courtroom thriller Jagged Edge in one of his best performances to date. By then, he had established himself as a leading man in good guy roles. The early '80s saw him give notable turns in various genres, including the revolutionary science fiction classic Tron, the classic adventure drama King Kong opposite Jessica Lange, and as an affable alien in Starman. So, when he took the part of a newspaperman accused of killing his wealthy wife out of greed in Jagged Edge, audiences had never seen this side of Bridges as an actor. He was fresh...

John Carpenter's 1992 film "Memoirs of an Invisible Man" was a departure for the director. Throughout the 1980s, Carpenter directed many notable genre films that affected a direct and guileless style that roped in many fans and critics. His 1980s "hot streak" included "Escape from New York," "The Thing," "Christine," "Starman," and "Big Trouble in Little China." Although his 1987 film "Prince of Darkness" was nonsensical, it has many defenders, and his 1988 film "They Live" is now considered a seminal anti-establishment punk-rock text of the Reagan era.
That streak seems to have ended with "Memoirs," however. Although the film is slick, entertaining, and boasts some excellent special effects, many Carpenter fans felt a little off-put by the director's attempts to helm a comedic Chevy Chase vehicle. In "Memoirs," Chase plays a stock market guy who is accidentally exposed to an invisibility experiment. The film follows his travails as he adjusts to his lack of opacity,...

Dafne Keen brings a unique twist to Star Wars as a "Jedi David Bowie" in The Acolyte, with influences from the legendary musician. Keen listened to David Bowie's song, Starman, on set, which influenced the energy she brought to the character. The Acolyte promises a bold and exciting new storyline, introducing fresh characters like Keen's Jedi with a rockstar edge.
Dafne Keen, who played X-23 in Logan, is making her Star Wars debut in The Acolyte, and she's described the role as a "Jedi David Bowie."
In the latest issue of Empire Magazine, Keen described how the musician David Bowie influenced her character, and her time on set.
The Wookiee Jedi isn't even The Acolyte's biggest swing. Prepare to meet "Jedi David Bowie", aka Dafne Keen's incoming Padawan Jecki - a moniker owing not just to her Aladdin Sane-esque red-and-blue facial markings, but the vibe she brought to The Acolyte's set.
