Awfully Good Movies: Cannonball Run II
George Miller
Nearly ten years after director George Miller returned to the post-apocalyptic wasteland and redefined the action genre with Mad Max: Fury Road, the Australian auteur returned to replace Charlize Theron with Anya Taylor Joy to tell the origin story of the warrior who helped Mad Max cross that fury road in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. And regardless of how underwhelming its box office may be, this high octane prequel will surely stand the test of time alongside the rest of the Mad Max saga, certainly more so than another follow-up from Warner Bros. to a car racing franchise way back in 1984, when the late great Burt Reynolds bid farewell to the formula comedy genre that made him a superstar alongside an all-star cast (Jackie Chan! Frank Sinatra! Tony Danza!) with Cannonball Run II.

The original Cannonball Run was just one of many hit movies between Burt and his stuntman...

Why Clint Eastwood and Burt Reynolds' City Heat Flopped at the Box Office
Image
Burt Reynolds and Clint Eastwood's legendary Hollywood friendship led to a friendly rivalry and eventual collaboration in City Heat. Despite high expectations for City Heat due to the star power of Eastwood and Reynolds, the film did not live up to blockbuster status. A serious injury to Reynolds on the first day of filming altered his career trajectory and led to false rumors about his health, impacting his stardom.

The friendship between Clint Eastwood and Burt Reynolds began in 1959, when the pair, both of whom were Universal Pictures contract players, were simultaneously fired by Universal. As Reynolds fondly recounted throughout the rest of his career, he was fired because of his acting, while Eastwood was let go because Universal objected to his chipped tooth and large Adam’s apple.

After achieving film stardom, Eastwood with the Dollar Trilogy Western film series, and Reynolds with the 1972 thriller Deliverance, they maintained...

Is There Life on Planet Yeat?
Image
Yeat is from the future. Yeat is not from this planet. According to the Yeat mythology, this is all the biographical detail you need to know about the 23-year-old Portland rapper who currently has a stranglehold over children and young men aged 12-30, and whose new album 2093 does little to expand upon those already sparse details. Yeat’s fans will tell you this is part of the point. One does not listen to Yeat expecting lyrical brilliance or even coherence. Like Playboi Carti before him, he traffics almost exclusively in vibes,...

Ready Player One Soundtrack Guide: Every Song & When They Play
Image
Ready Player One is a film that heavily relies on 1980s nostalgia, with a soundtrack filled with popular songs from that era. The soundtrack includes hits from iconic artists like Van Halen, Tears for Fears, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, and George Michael. Each song in the Ready Player One soundtrack is strategically placed within the movie to enhance specific scenes and moments.

Ready Player One is full of 1980s nostalgia, and the film's soundtrack plays a significant role in this. The 2018 Steven Spielberg movie is set in a futuristic time when humanity prefers a virtual world to a real one. It focuses on the media of the past, from movies, TV shows, video games, and, of course, music. Therefore, as Wade Watts, Aka Parzival, searches the Oasis for Halliday's Easter egg, he is accompanied by an excellent soundtrack featuring some of the biggest hits of the late 20th century.

Speilberg's Ready Player One,...

Every Burt Reynolds & Hal Needham Movie, Ranked
Image
Director Hal Needham made some of the most popular action comedies of the 1970s, and his frequent collaborations with Burt Reynolds were often his best films. Needham started his Hollywood career as a stunt actor, and that keen eye for action eventually landed him a spot in the director's chair. Reynolds was one of the biggest stars of the '70s, and together they created several amazing films that personified the decade and had a fair amount of laughs to go along with the pulse-pounding action. Though none of their collaborations were Oscar candidates, some were box office smashes that have stood the test of time.

First collaborating in 1977 on Smokey and the Bandit, the duo made a total of seven films together over a span of 20 years. Though Burt Reynolds worked with great directors in his career, his partnership with Needham was a consistent source of hits, and many...

Burt Reynolds (1936-2018) And Deliverance
This past week Burt Reynolds, perhaps the most self-deprecating movie star to ever cruise to box-office domination, died during a hospital stay in Jupiter, Florida, at the age of 82. “I’m pretty passionate about my work,” he once said, “even though I sometimes have this realization on the second day of shooting that I’m doing a piece of shit. So, I can do one of two things: I can just take the money, or I can try to be passionate. But the name of the boat is still the Titanic.” Yes, on top of being effortlessly likable and undeniably sexy, Reynolds was naturally funny too. And yes, there are a lot of confirmed pieces of shit floating around out there in which he received top billing. But even if the bad ones in his oeuvre outnumber the good ones (and I would argue that this is indeed the case...

When Burt Reynolds Complained About Me to Johnny Carson on ‘The Tonight Show’ (Guest Blog)
Burt Reynolds at an event for 14th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards (2008)
My wife and I were watching “The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson” one night in April, 1985 when Burt Reynolds came on as one of Johnny’s guests. I was interested in the banter between them for a couple of reasons.

I liked Reynolds a lot. Though he had of late been starring in cornball chase movies like “Stroker Ace,” “Cannonball Run” and the “Smokey and the Bandit” films, I would be forever grateful for his dramatic performance in the 1972 “Deliverance.” What a movie! He’d also shown his range in Alan J. Pakula’s light romantic comedy “Starting Over.” Plus, he was just a lot of fun.

More urgently, I was interested because he was on the show to promote a new movie adapted from Elmore Leonard’s novel “Stick.” He was both the movie’s star and its director and, a few months earlier, I’d been on the...

Burt Reynolds at an event for 14th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards (2008)
Even Burt Reynolds in his black Trans Am, all gonna meet down at the Cadillac Ranch. No movie star has ever not given a fuck more deeply, more passionately, than the late, great Burt Reynolds. He could give off that Idgaf shrug with every muscle in his body, including the ones in his mustache. He was the Homer of American bad-ass stoicism, with Smokey and the Bandit as his Iliad and Sharky’s Machine as his Odyssey. Burt Reynolds dead at 82: Our appreciation of a guy’s guy and ladies’ man always having a good time
Burt Reynolds at an event for 14th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards (2008)
Burt Reynolds was a guy’s guy, a ladies’ man, the ruggedly handsome alpha male of the entertainment world, who always seemed to be having a good time – whether cracking jokes on TV talk shows with pals like Dom DeLuise or saucily posing nude as a centerfold in “Cosmopolitan” magazine — except maybe when he broke his leg during that ill-fated canoe outing in 1972’s “Deliverance,” his breakout film role. According to his reps on Thursday, the actor is dead at age 82 in his adopted home of Jupiter, Florida.

With a thicket of hair, a dapper mustache and a twinkle in his eye, he often came across as a good ol’ Southern boy in such films as “Smokey and the Bandit,” “W,W. and the Dixie Dancekings” and “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas,” while claiming to be from Georgia. But he was born in Lansing, Michigan, although he would eventually end up in Riviera Beach,...

“A sad day, my friend Burt Reynolds Has passed away,” Stallone wrote on Instagram. “I remember him back in 1979, he always reminded me that I should’ve cast him as Colonel Trautman in First Blood , I said that’s impossible, because you’re too expensive and too famous, and probably tougher than Rambo !”

Reynolds and Stallone starred together in 2001’s “Driven,” centered on the world of racing.

Burt Reynolds, a staple of machismo-fueled, good ol’ boy movies from the 1970s and 1980s and an Emmy winner for his role on TV’s Evening Shade, died of a heart attack on Thursday. He was 82.

Reynolds’ long film resume includes free-wheeling larks such as Smokey and the Bandit and Stroker Ace, the comedies Semi-Tough and Cannonball Run, and more serious fare such as Deliverance (which earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture), Starting Over, Hustle and The Longest Yard.

In 1998, Reynolds received his first Academy Award nod, for a supporting role in Boogie Nights that also earned him a Golden Globe.

Burt Reynolds, one of Hollywood’s most popular leading men during the ’70s and early ’80s in such films as “Deliverance,” “Smokey and the Bandit, “The Longest Yard” and “Semi-Tough,” has died. His rep confirmed that he died Thursday in Jupiter, Fla. He was 82.

He later earned an Oscar nomination as best supporting actor in Paul Thomas Anderson’s ode to skin flicks, “Boogie Nights.” He had been set to appear in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Hollywood.”

Reynolds’ appeal lay in his post-modern macho posture undercut by a wry self-awareness, which he used to good effect in comedies as well as action films. For a period during the ’70s he was the nation’s top box office draw. But after one too many bad movies, his popularity waned. He returned to television, where he’d gotten his start, mostly in Westerns, and produced his own sitcom, “Evening Shade,” which brought him an Emmy.

TV Icon Jim Nabors Dead At Age 87; Gained Fame As Gomer Pyle
Jim Nabors and Frank Sutton in "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C".

By Lee Pfeiffer

Jim Nabors, who epitomized the image of a friendly country boy, has died at age 87 at his home in Hawaii. Nabors was plucked from obscurity when Andy Griffith caught his nightclub act in L.A. in the early 1960s and cast him in the role of Gomer Pyle, the affable but simple-minded filling station attendant in "The Andy Griffith Show". The program was always among the top shows in the ratings and Nabors' exposure on the show gained him instant fame. The character of Gomer became as iconic as Griffith's Sheriff Andy Taylor and Don Knotts' deputy Barney Fife. Nabors' popularity extended into a second career as a pop singer. When he first sang on an episode of "The Andy Griffith Show", many viewers thought his operatic baritone voice was dubbed. However, they soon...

Great Double Features I’Ve Seen #1: Smokey And The Bandit (1977) And Convoy (1978)
(This is the first in an occasional series in which I remember some of the best double features I’ve been lucky enough to see projected in a theater.)

The New Beverly Cinema, the oldest surviving revival theater in Los Angeles, has this week dished up a time-capsule glimpse into America’s popular obsession with Cb, or citizen’s band, radio and the largely mythological outlaw trucker culture through which it crackled. If you’re of a certain age (mine), and you ever cruised around town or down the highway jabbering to friends and strangers on an open channel frequency (I did—my handle was The Godfather!), given the opportunity I don’t see how you could possibly resist the chance to see the ultimate trucker-cb action-comedy pairing, Hal Needham’s Smokey and the Bandit and Sam Peckinpah’s Convoy. (I couldn’t!) As of this writing, the morning of...

Interviews: 1970s TV Stars Parker Stevenson & Ernest Thomas Reveal a Different Era of Entertainment
Chicago – Television has changed so much in the last generation that it’s hard to imagine a time of only three networks and a limited number of shows premiering every fall. But in the 1970s there were two such TV series, “The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries,” starring Parker Stevenson, and “What’s Happening!!,” starring Ernest Thomas. They both made appearances at the “Hollywood Show” in Chicagoland.

The “Hollywood Show” is an event in which fans can mingle, take photographs and get autographs from the celebrities who appear there, and takes place in Chicago, Los Angeles and Las Vegas. The next session will take place in Los Angeles on January 8th-10th, 2016. For complete details and ticket purchase information, click here.

Hal Needham obituary
Hollywood stuntman and film director who scored huge successes with Smokey and the Bandit and The Cannonball Run

Upset by the critical response to his work, the stuntman turned film director Hal Needham, who has died aged 82, took out advertisements in Variety and other trade papers. They featured quotes from negative reviews for his movies including Smokey and the Bandit (1977) and The Cannonball Run (1981), alongside a wheelbarrow overflowing with dollar bills.

Needham made a point. His rumbustious 1977 directorial debut had grossed over $100m – an enormous return on its modest budget. He was still milking that particular creation some 20 years later, producing and directing a series of television movies, including Bandit Goes Country and Beauty and the Bandit.

These and other films, many of which starred Burt Reynolds, were seen by an audience of hundreds of millions worldwide, yet few reference books acknowledged his 45-year-long career — an unjustified omission, if only...

Honorary Oscar-Winning Stunt Worker Who Directed Burt Reynolds in Several of His Biggest Hits Has Died
Stuntman and Burt Reynolds director Hal Needham dead at 82: Received Honorary Oscar in November 2012 Veteran stuntman and stunt coordinator Hal Needham, whose stunt-work movie credits ranged from John Ford Westerns to Roman Polanski’s Chinatown, and who directed a handful of popular action comedies starring Burt Reynolds, died today, October 25, 2013, in Los Angeles. Needham, who had been suffering from cancer, was 82. (See also: "Stunt Worker Hal Needham: Honorary Oscar 2012".) Born in Memphis, Tennessee, on March 6, 1931, Hal Needham began his long Hollywood stuntman career in the mid-’50s. A former tree trimmer and paratrooper, and a motorcycle and car racer, Needham performed stunts in both big-screen and small-screen Westerns, such as John Ford’s 1962 classic The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, starring John Wayne and James Stewart; the all-star 1963 Best Picture Academy Award nominee How the West Was Won; and the television series Have Gun - Will Travel, doubling for star Richard Boone.

Stuntman and Director Hal Needham Dead at 82
He wrecked hundreds of cars, fell from tall buildings, got blown up and was dragged by horses. As a stuntman, he broke 56 bones, including his back twice! Memphis-born Hal Needham revolutionized the art of the stuntman in films such as How The West Was Won, Stagecoach (1966), Hellfighters, Little Big Man, and hundreds of TV shows. He was a regular stunt double for Burt Reynolds and began his movie directing career with Burt as his lead in Smokey And The Bandit, the second highest-grossing film of 1977 next to Star Wars. He would direct Reynolds in four more films including Stroker Ace, Cannonball Run, and Hooper, which was not a tribute to just stuntmen in general, but to Needham’s hero Jock Mahoney , considered the greatest stuntman in Hollywood (and the stepfather of Hooper co-star Sally Field). Interview: Loni Anderson on Her Career at ‘The Hollywood Show’
Chicago – To answer the musical question, “Baby, if you ever wondered, wondered whatever became of me?” there is the sublime Loni Anderson, who portrayed Jennifer Marlowe on the popular 1970s sitcom, “Wkrp in Cincinnati.” Anderson was an attendee of “The Hollywood Show,” which comes to Chicago again on September 7th and 8th, 2013.

Loni Anderson is much like her character on Wkrp – luminous, intelligent and with a unique perspective. She climbed the show business ladder herself, after having a first marriage and a child in her teens. After that marriage ended before her 21st birthday, she finished college at the University of Minnesota and started an acting career, taking roles on stage and in local and national commercials. After moving to Los Angeles in 1975, she dyed her jet black hair to blonde, and began a series of high profile appearances on familiar dramas and comedies of the era, including “The Bob Newhart Show” and “Police Woman.

Tsr Exclusive: ‘Prince Avalanche’ Interview with Writer/Director David Gordon Green
Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch play two clashing highway road workers in Prince Avalanche, a goofy but rich comedy that adapts an obscure Icelandic film titled Either Way from 2011. Shot with a small crew and featuring a diabolical mustache from Paul Rudd, the film is written and directed by David Gordon Green.

Like a select few before him, Green is an intriguing creative force in Hollywood for his disinterest to stand still, and in the same place. He originally gained recognition by making indie film darlings like George Washington and All the Real Girls, but later challenged any type of genre categorization by following up the dark film Snow Angels with Pineapple Express. From there he went on to direct two raunchy comedies back to back, Your Highness and The Sitter, released in the same year. His latest, Prince Avalanche, continues his interest in comedy, but doesn’t feature the...

Billy Crudup, Malin Akerman, Matthew Goode, Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Patrick Wilson in Watchmen. Los vigilantes (2009)
'Stoker' Star On Gun Control: 'What Is The Compromise?'
Billy Crudup, Malin Akerman, Matthew Goode, Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Patrick Wilson in Watchmen. Los vigilantes (2009)
Sometimes, when you're interviewing an actor in support of his new movie -- in this case, the English actor Matthew Goode of "Stoker" -- all you want to do is sneak in a question about a past project. The project I wanted to talk about was "Watchmen," in which Goode played the villain Ozymandias. Sometimes, no matter how much you like the current project (and I do like it) you just can't wait to get to that question about the past. But then the actor decides he wants to talk about gun control -- which is much more interesting than your question about the past. And, it's hard to blame him, since the stylized violence of his current movie has already prompted more than a few conversations about the issue. I may not have asked about gun control, but, boy, Matthew Goode was ready to talk about gun control. (And,...

Stuntman Hal Needham to get Oscar for badassery
George Stevens
Stuntman Hal Needham boasts in his autobiography that he “broke 56 bones, my back twice, punctured a lung and knocked out a few teeth.”

Those are the trophies from a life spent falling off horses, crashing cars, and plummeting from buildings for the sake of the movies. Now he can add a less painful one to the list — an honorary Academy Award.

Needham, 81, is one of four Hollywood figures selected late Wednesday to receive an honorary Oscar from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences at the upcoming Governors Awards, joining documentarian D.A. Pennebaker, American Film Institute founder George Stevens,...

TV Review: Amazing Episode Kicks Off Third Season of FX’s ‘Archer’
Chicago – There’s so much variance in quality when it comes to TV animation for adults. On one end of the spectrum, there’s the already-canceled “Allen Gregory” and the hopefully-to-follow “Napoleon Dynamite.” On the other, you have a show like “South Park” that has lost none of its creative drive. With “Family Guy” faltering in the last couple years, there’s only one real contender to the Parker/Stone throne and tonight’s premiere of “Archer” proves that this often-brilliant show needs to be in the conversation when one considers the best animated shows on TV.

Television Rating: 4.5/5.0

I sometimes forget how funny “Archer” is until a new season premiere screener shows up. The first episode of the third season, “The Man From Jupiter,” which features a riotous guest appearance by Burt Reynolds, is one of the funniest things that I’ve seen in a long time, animated or live-action.

Bubba Smith obituary
Us football star and actor known for his Police Academy role

Some fans of the popular Police Academy films might be surprised to discover that the actor playing the gentle florist turned recruit Moses Hightower was someone who inspired an entire college campus to wear T-shirts stating "Kill Bubba Kill", echoing the words chanted by thousands of supporters in Michigan State University's Spartan Stadium. Bubba Smith, who has been found dead aged 66, was one of American college football's most legendary defenders, a figure who inspired awe on the gridiron. Playing against that image earned him a long career in film, television and advertising, most notably for Lite Beer.

His beer commercials often paired him with the equally fierce Dick Butkus, but the most memorable was one he did alone, in which he extolled the virtues of Lite Beer, then tore the can open with his bare hands. "I also love the easy-opening cans,...
