They don't make 'em like this anymore!
udar5522 June 2008
This was the funniest movie in the world when I was 8 years old. Now, not so much. Dr. Jekyll (Mark Blankfield) inadvertently snorts a powder he was mixing and becomes the disco-bopping, sex crazed Mr. Hyde. That is really all there is to this remixing of the Stevenson novel and THE NUTTY PROFESSOR. Director Jerry Belson throws out gags every 30 seconds and I'd say one out of three work. Blankfield truly has the energy for the part, that is for sure. I wonder why he was never a bigger comedy star? Look for small roles by George Wendt, Cassandra Peterson, Lin Shaye, and Art La Fleur. Seeing it some 25 years later, the best thing about it is the performance by one of my now favorites Tim Thomerson as a smug plastic surgeon. He is hilarious.

A movie from a time when we all didn't "Just say No"
billthebassist18 December 2005
It took me a while to find this movie since they don't have it yet on DVD (and my VCR is not worth hooking up again). I guess all the referencing to drug use is too much for some folks. But I found a decent bootleg on Ebay and I must say that anyone who takes this movie too seriously is just retarded. It is a slap stick spoof in the vein of "Airplane." I must say that when I watched it on Showtime or Spotlight growing up in the 80s, I enjoyed the humor a whole lot more then, than I do now. But it's definitely worth watching just to see what they(i.e., movie makers) were able to get away with before the "Just Say No" hypocrites unleashed their propaganda. sing..."We are all on drugs" hahaha It's a silly film and worth the $10 I paid off of Ebay to get it on DVD just don't even think about comparing it to the original - that's just plain stupid. What are you high?

I snorted as well... with laughter.

Jekyll and Hyde... Together Again is a horror spoof in the same scattershot vein as Airplane, Naked Gun or Hot Shots, loaded with sight gags, slapstick and abject lunacy, with so much throwaway silliness that a lot of it might even go unnoticed. As is typical with this kind of film, the gags are fairly hit and miss - possibly even more miss than hit (hell, even the best of the Zucker Abrahams movies have their duff jokes) - but it is still a fun ride thanks to a game cast who give it their all: lead Mark Blankfield plays both Jeckyll and Hyde with unreserved gusto, the performer's eccentric mannerisms as Hyde the highlight of the film (he reminded me a lot of Danny John-Jules as Cat in Red Dwarf, only even more manic); Blankfield is joined by B-movie favourite Tim Thomerson as cross-dressing plastic surgeon Dr. Knute Lanyon, character actress Lin Shaye as a lustful nurse, Krista Errickson as sexy hooker Ivy, Bess Armstrong as Jeckyll's posh crumpet fiancé Mary Carew, and Cassandra 'Elvira' Peterson as a busty nurse.

The plot is loosely based on the famous novel by Robert Louis Stevenson, but is probably best described as The Nutty Professor with Class-A drugs: while carrying out research into harnessing the power of man's animal instincts for survival, Dr. Jeckyll accidentally snorts one of his experimental powders and transforms into wild-haired sex-machine Hyde, packing a big bulge in his pants, a hairy chest, a coke nail, a gold tooth and tacky jewellery. Thereon, it's total madness, as Hyde gets it on with hooker/songstress Ivy, regretting his actions when he reverts back to Jeckyll, but continuing to snort his powder even though it might cost his career and his relationship (a madcap comedy about drug addiction - don't get many of those!).

The un-PC humour might not suit everyone (there's gay and racial stereotypes, a bestiality gag, and sexist quips aplenty), but with punks in Devo hats, random dwarfs, a testicle donor ($1m for the pair), Elvira's nipple, chicken sushi, a non-stop train service from L.A. to London, a foggy street called Foggy Street, an impromptu musical number with.three backing singers, a black and white rooftop chase, and a final shot of Robert Louis Stevenson literally spinning in his grave, this one's just too silly to get upset about.

7/10. Much more enjoyable than I thought it would be.

This movie is exquisitly silly and many missed the point.
Pigmata12 August 2001
This movie is blessed with an unusually high degree if silliness. I giggled like a schoolgirl from beginning to end and was overjoyed to have found it to be available again on VHS. No disrespect to the others who have posted their comments on this page, but they seem to be a little uptight, perhaps so much so that the whole idea of comedy escapes them. I can envision such a pouter foolishly scowling for two solid hours while he critiques this flick. Shame. This movie is for people who like to have fun. Lighten up.

Hyde's got nothing to hide!
Hey_Sweden21 March 2021
Doing an exaggeration of his druggist character on TVs' 'Fridays' series, comic actor Mark Blankfield does a very funny job at portraying these two classic characters. Dr. Daniel Jekyll is a surgeon who wants to get out of that line of work and do pure research. He's engaged to the materialistic daughter (Bess Armstrong) of his boss (Michael McGuire). But one of his experiments goes seriously awry, and he's transformed into the garish, swaggering Mr. Hyde, a sex fiend who would rather be a total 80s party animal than terrorize the public. Naturally, Daniel is stressed out when these transformations become fairly frequent.

It's certainly true that this raunchy, ridiculous spoof often traffics in cheap 'n' easy drug and sex jokes for the sake of laughs. But unless you prefer your comedies to be much more subtle and highbrow, this *does* show people a pretty good time. Granted, it can be hit or miss with its gags. It starts strong, and its first and final thirds are the best. It marked the theatrical directing debut for veteran comedy writer Jerry Belson (one of the four credited screenwriters here), who gives this great pace & energy. And even if it is overly silly and childish at times, this viewer really didn't mind all that much. At the very least, this is not bland or boring.

Blankfield is a hoot, especially when he's playing Hyde (not that that comes as a shock). He's well supported by a rich variety of familiar faces. Armstrong and the pretty, feisty Krista Errickson are fine eye candy as the two women in Jekyll & Hydes' lives. At first, the movie would seem to be an egregious waste of the great Tim Thomerson, but he does contribute some good, funny moments of his own in the movies' second half. A bunch of familiar performers have supporting roles and bits: Cassandra "Elvira" Peterson (the nurse whose breasts threaten to burst out of her costume), Peter Brocco, Liz Sheridan, George Wendt, Michael Ensign, John Dennis Johnston, Tony Cox, Art LaFleur, and Lin Shaye. George Chakiris appears briefly as himself.

In the end, it's hard (at least for this viewer) not to have SOME respect for a movie that ADMITS that it's an abomination of the concept created many years ago by Robert Louis Stevenson. The final gag is proof of this. And that theme song is so damn catchy.

Seven out of 10.

Mandatory separation recommended....
Mister-624 November 1999
A long time ago, way back in the early '80s, a late-night TV show "Fridays" came to ABC, trying to steal the limelight away from NBC's badly-listing "Saturday Night Live". It didn't but it did introduce some repugnant sketches and semi-talented "comedians" to the world. Like Mark Blankenfield, for example.

Which, in a roundabout way, brings us to "Jekyll and Hyde... Together Again". Which is repugnant in ways all its own.

Blankenfield is about as subtle as a pew full of whoopee cushions going off after Communion. And about as tasteful, too. This is just his drugged-out druggist character he played on the ill-fated "Fridays" show stretched out to feature length. And if you didn't like him there, why are you reading this review?

Any time it takes more than one or two writers to write a movie, that's a bad sign. Then when it goes for dunder-headed jokes that would get you thrown off every improv stage in the Western hemisphere and replaces gags with gross-out, things can only get worse.

A comic take on a Robert Louis Stevenson story? About as good an idea as making a sitcom out of Poe's "Fall of the House of Usher".

Aside from a few (VERY few) gags that give a slight grin, this whole film is an exercise in waste - wasted actors, wasted film, wasted opportunities.

No wonder they showed original author Stevenson turning in his grave. What more observant a review could they give themselves?

No stars. No, not even for Armstrong, who should have known better.

"Hyde" from this one.

Very funny movie
barry_steeby30 December 2006
The "all I have is 5 dollars and my wedding ring..." scene was a riot. I also guffawed at the scene in the bar where Hyde snorted the horse radish and flipped the bird to the Japanese guy and said "Pearl Harbor buddy". I think my IQ is higher than 115, but I'm not sure because I can't count that high.

Funny thing, this 10 line requirement. Seems as though they would bash you for making your comments too long, not too short. I hope I don't make it to 1,000 words before I get to line 10.

I'm still two lines short. Pardon me while I think and drink, or drink and think. It depends on whether my hands are faster than my mind. Good, I think I've made it to the 10 line limit. Thanks for reading!

Sixty dollars and a wedding ring....
FlashCallahan12 January 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Dr Daniel Jekyll researches into drugs that would help mankind avoid surgery.

He discovers a white powder that unleashes the animal in every man, and in his case turning him from a shy and timid doctor into a wild sex crazed party animal.

To the delight and dismay of both his fiancée and stripper girlfriend, whom he met in Hyde mode....

Remember the Mel Brooks spoofs from the nineties? Robin Hood Men In Tights, and Dracula: Dead and Loving it to be precise. And remember the Leslie Nielsen spoofs that were not Naked Gun Films?

This has the same quality as them, it tries to be funny, and there are a couple of really good gags in the movie, but you have to wade through and abhorrent mess to get to the gems.

The cast are fine, and do well with the material, you when you watch this, you realise why it's never had a recognition like many films from the era.

And it literally has the corpse of Louis Stevenson spinning in his grave at the end.

A knowing wink? Or just submission into knowing that the film isn't that good.

Wrong, wrong, wrong!
bluedevil7022 February 2006
Mark Blankfield played Jekyll and Hyde.

Michael McGuire was the dad.

Tim Thomerson was the plastic surgeon.

Did you even see this movie? I doubt it!

Blankfield was fairly popular at this time for playing the pill-popping doctor on Fridays. Thomerson has been funny in anything he does, from movies to series to stand-up comedy. If I ever find this movie on DVD I will definitely buy it. I recorded this movie off of HBO back in '82 and have pretty much worn out the tape. One of the funniest takes on the Jekyll & Hyde theme ever.

Of course. with all the cocaine references in this movie, it'd be panned as being way too politically incorrect today, as would Cheech and Chong. Too bad, because it is FUNNY, FUNNY, FUNNY!

Warning: Spoilers
I remember when this movie came out forty years ago that even at that time people complained about the inappropriateness of the drug humor in it (the ads called it a real "toot" saying Jekyll could take his scientific discovery and shove it up his nose. It was that blatant. I watched this movie and laughed at it but felt very ashamed afterwards. I was amazed when I read some of the people who worked on the Dick Van Dyke show wrote the script! Mark Blankfield is a wonderfully intense zany comic actor who does a good job as the straight laced Jekyll and the crazed sex fiend Hyde playing both characters with equal conviction. An interesting footnote I wanted to mention is that Krista Errickson who plays the lustful slutty Ivy (she had also previouslly co starred on the infamous McLean Stevenson show Hello Larry) became a very respected journalist after getting out of acting. Yes this movie will make you laugh but in the end you are ashamed and I think its appropriate it ends showing Robert Louis Stevenson literally turning in his grave!

a fun factoid about the nurse with gonzagas
hamnchkn5 June 2006
This is sweet. The actress who played the nurse with the gonzongas is the same actress who plays Elvira mistress of the dark. Another little tidbit is the actress who played the nurse who would give her wedding ring was the landlord lady of Roy Munsin in King Pin. This is most glorious story ever to be told. It should sell more copies than the bible. My parents played a part in suggesting the release of this movie to a local movie theater. The movie ran for a week and we were one of 4 families to see it. The lady who gave the go ahead (friend of the family) was let go by the theater. I was 3 years old. I have burned through 4 copies on VHS and finally had it converted to DVD. It's beautiful.

WAY overlooked "B" gem.
BeauEvil16 January 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I love this movie a lot. I must get this on DVD. I have 2 VHS copies, but the quality is so poor that you can't read one written joke over the door of the ward. I'm forever amazed that Blankfield did almost nothing afterward. He made both Dr. Jeckle and Mr. Hyde totally believable.

The movie is plagued by it's low budget. (One atrocious edit jumps into mid-word and was described on, "Siskel & Ebert".) But, there are a thousand jokes, sight gags to subtle references, that more than compensate. I often find myself quoting lines (or, singing, "I've Got Nothing to Hide") and, from time to time, completely describe a scene which matches some conversation. There are, at least, six scenes which are among my all time favorite comedy bits.

Viewers with no history of cocaine use may miss a lot of gags.

"Here, take it." * Visual of driving while waving butt out the window.* "I said, 'Is this seat taken?'" "Nice Burn!" Visual of chaps, headdress, jockstrap, & swim fins. * "Yeah. I'm right handed." * "Me! Me!" says the woman trying to sell 'nads. * "Bernie's going to love these." * "That's my feet, Jack." says the black feet. * "Why should we tell you?"... "SHE'S AT THE SUPERMARKET!" * "Ivy!" on supermarket PA. * Loading whole shopping cart into ambulance. * etc.

Loved it!
Talos_Valheru17 August 2006
So it's a little dated now, it's almost 30 yrs old. Amazingly enough I have this on BETA tape and it still plays just fine. If it came to DVD I'd snap it up in a heartbeat.

The drug humor is not appreciated nowadays as it was back then. Then it wasn't as 'harmful'. Much like driving without airbags, seat belts and child seats. I can remember my father crying he was laughing so hard watching this. I had coworkers in the 90's who'd seen it and I could bust them up by getting on the intercom and saying "Iiiiiiiivvvvyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy".

Great lines, great spoof of the original, and funny to me anyway even three decades later!

This is one of those rare comedies where try as you might, you can't help but giggle, chortle, guffaw and yes, even laugh out loud. The lead actor's performance as Hyde is pure manic genius. See if you can keep a straight face when he does his transformation. Good luck. :) On the downside there are times when the movie does bog down. It seemed longer than its 90 minutes.

not for everyone but...
munkeyfuk28 February 2004
alot of people will not enjoy this movie, but it is not due to a lack of humor. it is filled with drug/sex jokes and references which would turn off lots of conservative minded viewers but if theses things dont bother you, this movie is hilarious. it is reminiscent of airplane (anything zucker) but also has elements of python-style surrealisim. the transformation scene, complete with erection and jewelry is classic and his colleague's (thomerson's) gradual breakdown/outing are priceless. blankfield's hyde is classic and should have had him working for years. in summary, how can you not like a villan who, when confronted with a woman screaming "RAPE!" responds "later, if there's time"

an absolute must see, continuous laughs
Siggy-WA15 April 2002
I first seen this movie in the early 80s and we used to have it on betamax. As we all know, betamax went the way of the 8-trak tape, sigh, it really had nice picture quality too. Anyways, I'm glad I found this movie again, I've been searching for it for more than 10 years! This movie falls into the category of movies like Airplane: continuous jokes, oneliners, funny actions (bodylanguage). Mark Blankfield is absolutely hilarious. His transformation from the shy Dr. Daniel Jekyll into the sex-crazed partyanimal Mr. Hyde is unforgettable, complete with goldtooth, chesthair and goldchains. The part I loved best was when he hijacked the car from this poor guy and then drove to Madam Woo Woo's. Totally psychedelic experience without the drugs! If you need laugh therapy this is the movie to do it. When I first seen it, I had tears in my eyes and my belly was hurting from constantly laughing. This is a movie I could watch over and over again. I highly recommend it.

If you cannot laugh about "chicken sushi", you're probably no slapstick-fan
t_atzmueller25 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
During the 1980's we all knew, if you saw an item twisted into a knot on a movie-poster, the film would invariably fall into the slapstick category that started with „Airplane". In this case we are greeted by a twisted syringe.

"Jeckyll and Hyde … Together Again" falls in the same vein as "Airplane", "Hot Shots" or "Top Secret" and even though it does not reach those 'high' standards, the jokes are coming hard and fast and relentless, punching above and below the belt, not leaving the audience much time to find many flaws.

Bess Armstrong and Krista Errickson are both cute as a button, Tim Thomerson is reliable as ever, it's a joy to watch Michael McGuire chew his scenes and do look out for 'guest-appearances' by Liz Sheridan, Lin Shaye as sex-starved nurse and George Chakiris, playing (as he often does) himself.

But the honourable Oscar ™ (carved out of chewing gum and jelly beans) must go to Mark Blankfield, one of the shamefully neglected comedians of his time. His hyper-nervous Daniel Jeckyll-persona makes one want to reach for the remote, playing his scenes back in slow-motion, ever in danger adopting the characters quirks and ticks. He's only upstaged by Blankfield as Mr. Hyde who, had the movie been better promoted and more successful, could have ended a cinematic cult-figure. Few comedians have gone as over the top as Blankfield and why we haven't seen more of him on the big-screen will probably remain one of Hollywood's eternal secrets.

Granted, Jerry Belson, though a veteran of light comedy himself, is no Jim Abrahams or David Zucker. The production has the air of television about it, never as easy or elegant as above mentioned slapstick-classics but compensates with pure self-confidence.

If you're a fan of the "Airplane"-genre of slapstick, I recommend this blindly and if you've grown up with the newer generation ala "Epic Movie", I recommend this because it comes from a time where slapstick still meant quality and hard work. They just don't make them like they used to … 9 points out of 10 points - slapstick-points, that is.

"Don't touch me you dirty hippie!"
lost-in-limbo24 July 2011
In the tradition of those outrageously silly comedy spoofs; "Jekyll and Hyde… Together Again" seemed to fall amongst the cracks which are rather disappointing because this item has its fair share of laughs and sexual innuendo. Like most of its ilk, it can be hit or miss with its surgically placed gags but it's a lot of wacky fun to watch because of Mark Blankfield's comic performance as the straight-laced Jekyll and maniacally tripped-out Hyde. Especially the risible transformation scenes and his off-the-rocker interactions. Still he has great support in the shape of Tim Thomerson, Michael McGuire, Bess Armstrong, Krista Errickson and bit part for Cassandra Peterson aka Elvira as a busty nurse. Judging by its title, it's easy to guess how the premise will play out. Yep this is a bastardised version of Robert Louis Steven's story "The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde", which sees the medical practice and hipster scene coming together where Dr. Jekyll struggles to harness this animal instinct in to descent thanks to the temptation of a certain white magic powder. This time it's mostly set in America, but heads to the story's basis country of origin England in the latter half. There it plays around with its source material and gives a wink to the original author. What the script snorts up is purely madcap, where one minute it would be dry then suddenly quite low-brow and then plain goofy. The dialogs are just madness. A pleasurably comical low-budget b-grade cult comedy spoof.

"Only if the animal in man could be released."

Bawdy humor in a B movie that deserves more popularity
GentleKnight16 August 2006
Who ARE the people that star in this thing? Never heard of them!! But this is one of the funniest comedies I have run across. It should win the Putz Puller Prize for Parody. The absurd starts with Dr. Jeykl snorting his powder and turning into a sex fiend. He is pursued by libido driven nurse early in the movie in one of the funniest scenes of the movie. Pay attention to the hospital PA system in the background; rather like the system in MASH. The final scene with Hyde accepting the award has had me laughing for years. Oh... and the "Busty Nurse" is Cassandra Peterson, who went on to become Elvira, Mistress of the Dark.

If you liked the Mel Brooks classic movies (Blazing Saddles, etc.), I suspect you'd like this one.

Damn shame you can't get it on DVD anywhere.

It's available on DVD now !!!!! Good thing DVDs don't wear out from use !!!!!

If you don't get it - you're lame.....
mot1mot1 April 2004
A mix of 70's drug humor along with parody of medicine and classic story line. As I've often said about this flick - if you don't get it - you're way lame..... Classic lines such as (parapharsed) "I've got this erection and it won't go away no matter how many times I do it. You're a nurse, what can you give me for it?" Nurse replies "all I have is 5 dollars and my wedding ring..." Great sound track. The classic "Hyde's got nothing to hide". Stays surprisingly close to the original plot - not that the original stays in the way of a joke..... Haven't met anyone with an IQ over 115 that doesn't find it hysterical.

Jekyl and Hyde together again Genuinely Funny
Merlin464629 April 2006
I Loved this movie. Mark Blankfield was perfect for this role. More Classic sci/fie/Horror films should be remade to this comedy level, which is at the very top of the line in my opinion. A no drink movie, you laugh so hard you will spill it all over yourself. Can We expect more? Let's hope so. I would like to suggest many movies for this type of remake. Mel Brookes made some remakes of classic films. He made some very strong contributions. A Picture of Dorian Gray would be a good suggestion. I hope some producer or director can get into the idea and bring us new comedy to our screens. we are needing a good insurgence of comedy to keep our level of laughter higher than ever before. A good Comedy FIX.

So it's not an award winner......
becklet3 June 2005
So it's not an award winner, so what? Have you ever wanted to see a film that was just silly? "The Villain" and this one could top the list.My husband says that "Jekyll and Hyde Together Again" is one of those movies that if "you've been there and done that" you'll think this spoof on the 80's cocaine culture is a riot. I think the whole film is just fun. Nothing is sacred; hospitals, plastic surgery, Howard Hughes.... There are ongoing gags that you have to watch for to appreciate. To say that the film doesn't follow the book would be true, but then a lot of really good films take liberties with the published word also. I recommend this movie to all the old "stoners" among us. We may be smarter now, but we will still recognize and laugh at many folks we knew (ourselves?) back in the old days.

Very funny first time around
gypsyccw21 June 2006
Coming from the "druggie" generation, I thought this movie was hilarious. It definitely brought Jekyll & Hyde up-to-date, so to speak. My husband and I laughed all the way through it. Would love to have the movie in my collection. I told my two teenagers about the movie and they would love to see it. They aren't into drugs but they know enough about them to understand the comedy in the movie. It's been so long since I've seen it I can't remember but a few things. I would have to say the funniest part was when Dr. Jekyll dozed off on his lab table and inhaled the straw, while snoring, then snorted up the powdered drug he had invented. Funniest thing I'd ever seen in a movie.

Early 80s drug humor
isabellacatgirl21 May 2022
Saw this again recently on VHS(also own it on Beta),and it's really hilarious. They wouldn't get away with making a movie this crazy today. I bet people would try to ban it if it was released today. It's like Cheech and Chong meets Airplane! Alot of sex and cocaine jokes. Love the Elvira cameos...Mark Blankfield's tour de force for sure. He's on fire in this flick! Can't believe it's the same guy who played Blinkin in that Robin Hood movie. The actress Krista Errickson(Ivy) is also great in this movie. Too bad she hates the movie in real life and thinks she should have chosen to work in Flashdance instead. No way, this movie is way better than boring Flashdance. She made the right choice imo! Some British humor thrown in this movie for good measure even. Only thing that seems dated are the special FX(you can visibly see the wires holding up certain things in midair during some scenes). Otherwise this movie is so epic. It should've been as big as Star Wars, and Blankfield is a comic hero along the lines of Andy Kaufman,Jim Carrey,etc...
