HBO’s latest blockbuster drama effort, Lovecraft Country, is a unique Lovecraftian beast. As adapted by Matt Ruff’s novel of the same name, the show takes classic horror, sci-fi, and adventure tropes and adapts them into a timely story of American racism.
Though the series is certainly timely, it’s also timeless. As evidenced by our helpful explainer article, it wasn’t immediately clear when Lovecraft Country even took place. That’s partly because the Jim Crow era of American institutionalized racism was a lengthy one. And the fact that Atticus “Tic” Freeman was a war veteran didn’t help out much. Which war coincided with “whites only” restaurants and sundown towns? World War II, The Korean War, The Vietnam War – take your pick, really. That pleasant disorientation is enhanced by an equally disorienting soundtrack.

Spinosa’s last title was 2014’s Son epouse with Charlotte Gainsbourg, but he may be most recognizable as a director for his 2007 drama Anna M., which featured Isabelle Carre in a Cesar nominated performance. Choose Me. Courtesy of Everett Collection via the Quad.Alan Rudolph makes a compelling case in defense of sentimentality, in defense of the love-sick and amorous. He believes in the beauty and rejuvenating power of art, and of love. Rarely sanguine or saccharine, but unapologetically emotional, his films understand that love is a painful, often arduous affair, that it is messy and confusing and ultimately ineffable, best captured in glances rather than words. Though there is a certain look, a certain feeling, that defines an Alan Rudolph film, his formal dexterity is varied, his repertoire of visual tricks assured. His swooning camera traces the boundaries of scenes like an outsider gazing longingly in, drifting dreamily, lingering like a voyeur. Choose Me (1984) begins with a voluptuous three-minute long take, starting with a closeup of the luminescent “E” of a neon sign that reads “Eve’s Lounge,” swooping down to show an...

Above: Us one sheet for Trouble in Mind (1985). Art direction by Mike Kaplan, illustration by Ignacio Gomez.Alan Rudolph may not be one of the best known names in American independent film and that is a shame because his 22-feature filmography comprises a unique body of work of literate, off-kilter, romantic, humanistic cinema. New Yorkers have a chance to devour that work over the next few weeks at the Quad Cinema in their essential retrospective, "Alan Rudolph’s Everyday Lovers."Rudolph’s poster-ography is as erratic and full of gems as his filmic career. It starts out with a couple of genre horror films—with gaudy posters to match—before launching into the early masterpieces Welcome to L.A. and Remember My Name, both film which were released by Mike Kaplan’s Lagoon. Kaplan, who had previously worked with Stanley Kubrick, is a keen connoisseur and collector of posters himself,...

The 44-year-old is the last known living male northern white rhinoceros in the world. He and the two other known living females of his species live at Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya, where they are protected from poachers by a 24-hour armed guard.
While this has been Sudan’s reality for several years, his plight is coming back into focus following a viral Tweet.

Three stories set in Nice, on the French Riviera, in winter weave in and out of each other in Endangered Species (Especes menacees), French director Gilles Bourdos’ ambitious adaptation of material from The Stories of Richard Bausch. The overarching narrative here centers on Josephine, a young bride, and the problems she has with her potentially aggressive groom; the other two main story threads involve Josephine’s new neighbor, his pregnant daughter, her future husband and the latter’s PhD student, whose mother ends up in a mental institution.

But Cecil's legacy has continued at the Hwange National Park, with the help of Cecil's non-biological "brother" Jericho, who is now ruling his pride. "Cecil's three females and seven cubs are still all alive and well and still within their normal home range," Andrew Loveridge told the Chicago Tribune in May. He was part of the team who tracked...

Taking place in post-revolutionary Iran, Wayne Blair’s “Septembers of Shiraz” stars Adrien Brody and Salma Hayek as a Jewish couple who give up their possessions to the cause but still find themselves enemies of it. A new clip from the adaptation of Dalia Sofer’s 2007 novel, which comes to theaters next week, gives a sense of Blair’s brand of suspense.

In it, an accented Brody finds himself inside an empty cell lit only by the flashlight of the masked man who enters and offers him water. The two have a brief chat about the cathartic power of tears before the interrogator hands Brody a Quran: “You might find it helpful,” he tells him through the burlap sack covering his face. “You have to believe that you will make it. I've always wondered how much creative freedom Marvel actually gives the directors they hire to make their movies. I imagine it varies from one director to another, but it sounds like the studio has given James Gunn the power and creative freedom to do whatever the hell he wants with Guardians of the Galaxy.
During a Q&A session on Facebook Gunn was asked:
"How far ahead of time does Marvel communicate their ideas for the direction of the movie and how much input do they give concerning the mid-credits scenes?"
As it turns out, Marvel doesn't give Gunn any ideas or point him in the direction to take the movie. Everything we see on screen is his own ideas. He explains in the following reply:
"The story and end credit scenes are all mine. Marvel okays everything of course but the ideas are from me. I've never been given some plot point I have to fit into the movie."
I guess when Marvel trusts their property with someone they let them have at it. I think Gunn might be a special case, though, because Guardians of the Galaxy is kind of its own thing. But I don't know how it works because as we all know Edgar Wright dropped out of Ant-Man because of creative differences. So I guess if Gunn were to have an idea that didn't mesh with what Marvel envisioned, maybe they'd make him change something.
Regardless, it is cool to know that Marvel has allowed Gunn that kind of freedom. It just means that everything that we see from him in the Marvel universe is all his own.
The director also revealed he's nearly done filming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and announced a raffle for an autographed photo of the cast and a hat that only members of the cast and crew get. To enter the raffle, you just need to donate $5 to the Rainforest Trust.
"Guardians of the Galaxy’s support of Rainforest Trust dates back to the beginning of the series when Vin Diesel (voice of Groot) sprouted the idea for the “Plant a Tree for Groot” challenge in 2014. Gunn soon upped the ante, saying that he would donate $5,000 dollars if 50 people planted trees in Groot’s honor. Since then, Gunn has been a supporter of multiple Rainforest Trust projects such as the creation of a safe haven for Matschie’s Tree-kangaroos in Papua New Guinea and the My Chocolate Acre campaign with Endangered Species Chocolate. Gunn’s Guardians poster raffle shows that even $5 can have a positive impact on the conservation of rainforests."
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be released in theaters on May 5th, 2017.

Wild Bunch will kick-off pre-sales at Cannes on Oscar-winner Michel Hazanavicius’s [pictured] new project Redoubtable revolving around the relationship between Jean-Luc Godard and actress Anne Wiazemsky in the late 1960s.
Based on Wiazemsky’s autobiographical account Un An Après, the production will star Louis Garrel as Jean-Luc Godard and Stacy Martin, last seen in High-Rise, as the director’s young muse.
The script kicks off with the 1967 shoot of La Chinoise – about a group of students who try to live by Maoists principles - and follows the couple through the late 1960s when Godard went through his so-called “revolutionary period”.
Wiazemsky – who met Godard when she was just 17-years-old and he was on the rebound from Anna Karina – was married to the filmmaker for more than a decade.

Read More: Abramorama Releasing Endangered Species Doc 'Racing Extinction' Abramorama and HBO Documentary Films have announced their acquisition of "Heart of a Dog," the latest film from renowned musician and artist Laurie Anderson. The deal comes ahead of screenings for the film at a majority of the big fall festivals, including those in Telluride, Venice, Toronto, New York and San Sebastian. "Heart of a Dog" is a film essay that draws on themes of loss, love and memory. The titular dog refers to Anderson's adored rat terrier Lolabelle, whose death was one in a series of losses for Anderson that included the deaths of her husband Lou Reed and her mother. While Lolabelle's death guides the film's stream of consciousness, "Heart of a Dog" is weaved together like a collage, offering disparate reflections on surveillance, Buddhism and childhood memories. Drawing comparisons to the work of filmmaker Chris Marker,...

Endangered Species: Syeed Offers Temperate Portrait of a Man and his Home Against an Oscillating Backdrop
Reflecting his background within the documentary realm, Musa Syeed’s first feature film encourages a verite approach to the characters as their lives unfold amidst changing times. Valley of Saints acts a balmy reflection on a young man’s life revolving the lake and its changing currents. The multiple prize winning Sundance title was shot on location in Kashmir during an actual military curfew allowing the film to unfold with a rare measure of authenticity. Syeed also has a personal stake in the film: his family was born in Kashmir with his father having been imprisoned for his participation in the independent movement. Such idiosyncratic components help to enrich the overall narrative tapestry of a film which could labeled feeble otherwise.

Earlier today we alerted you to the special Halloween screenings at the American Cinematheque. They aren't the only Halloween game in Los Angeles. Cinefamily has announced their 30 midnights program for Halloween. Last year the focus was on video nasties; this year it is the United States of Horror, a "cross-country death trip, with each night celebrating a different state of the Union, and regional horror filmmaking of all stripes. Whether it's unknown directors toiling away on backyard labors of love, or itinerant auteurs falling in love with and shooting an unfamiliar landscape as if it was their own, this series' thirty entries provide a vibrant overview of our nation's hidden horror history." Sounds way safer than taking an actual roadtrip.

Cher took "The Voice" stage during Tuesday night's finale for a highly-anticipated performance (above) of her new single "Woman's World."
But when audiences saw the wig that Cher was sporting, the song took a back seat. Of course, outrageous headgear is nothing new for now 67-year-old Cher -- from her Native American headdress to her Ronald McDonald red locks, the legendary singer has been known for her daring cranial choices.
But the one she wore on "The Voice" had many befuddled. Was it some auburn and black cotton candy? Was it a black and a brown dachshund fighting atop her head? Was it some sort of muted cockatoo?
Even with strobe lights, a massive Iron Throne-like structure and a gaggle of scantily-clad dancers behind her, the only thing "The Voice" fans were talking about on Twitter was Cher's wig.

Talking to world leaders about a cause close to his heart, Prince William recorded an anti-poaching message on Monday (March 4).
Made for the 2013 Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna, the video urges protective measures be put in to place to end poaching, especially of African elephants and rhinos.
Dressed in a suit and purple tie, the Duke of Cambridge said, "What you decide in this room over the next two weeks could determine the fates of some of the world's most captivating species, as well as many lesser-known plants and animals that warrant equal attention."
“We simply must not let this catastrophe unfold," the father-to-be continued. “Our children should have the same opportunity that we have, to experience wildlife in its many beautiful and varied forms.”
Check out what else Prince William had to say to world leaders in the player below.

As if Prince William could get any more appealing... In a video address to world leaders gathered in Bangkok for the 2013 Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (or Cites), Kate Middleton's other half urged all to take active measures to put an end to the poaching of endangered species, particularly African elephants and rhinos. "What you decide in this room over the next two weeks could determine the fates of some of the world's most captivating species, as well as many lesser-known plants and animals that warrant equal attention," the Duke of Cambridge, a longtime anti-poaching activist, says in his latest missive on the subject. Protect sharks or they face possible extinction in a generation, scientists warn as they gather in Bangkok for Cites meeting
Almost 100 million sharks are being killed each year, with fishing rates outstripping the ability of populations to recover, scientists have estimated.
Sharks need better protection to prevent possible extinction of many species within coming decades, the researchers warned ahead of latest global meeting to discuss the trade in threatened species.
The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (Cites) meeting, starting on Monday in Bangkok, will consider greater protection of vulnerable sharks, including porbeagles, oceanic whitetip and three types of hammerhead to prevent unsustainable international trade in them.
Sharks are targeted for their fins for use in shark fin soup, a delicacy in Asia.
But as they are slow-growing and slow to reproduce, they are vulnerable to overfishing. The researchers estimated that global reported catches, unreported landings, discards and sharks...

The grisly trade in wild animals is underpinned by slaughter, smuggling and money-laundering. It's time to get serious
Illegal trade in wildlife has now reached a scale that poses an immediate risk to wildlife and to people. Over the past five years, we have seen a dramatic spike in the poaching and illegal trade in elephants and rhinos. In 2011 an estimated 25,000 elephants were poached across Africa and in South Africa alone 668 rhinos were lost to poachers in 2012.
The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (Cites) was born 40 years ago on 3 March, 1973 in Washington DC. It sets the global controls for trade in wildlife, and the 177 countries that have joined Cites will meet from Monday in Bangkok, Thailand to take stock of of the situation, step up enforcement efforts and send clear political signals on putting a stop to illegal wildlife trade.

Head of Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species Wildlife says clampdown must mirror war on drugs
Crime syndicates and terrorists are outgunning those on the frontline of wildlife protection and pose a deadly threat to people and animals, the world's top wildlife official has told the Guardian.
The law enforcement fightback must mirror the war against illegal drugs, said John Scanlon, secretary general of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (Cites), with undercover operations and harsh penalties.
The warning comes as officials from 177 countries gather in Bangkok for the first Cites summit for three years, with major battles expected over protection for polar bears, ending "trophy" hunting for rhinos and the free trade in ivory in the host nation, Thailand. The vast trade in shark fins and turtles will also come under attack, as will the large-scale felling of tropical rosewood and sandalwood, as well as less...

There are many reasons why animals become endangered, some of them attributable to human activity -- such as habitat loss, pollution, excessive harvesting of species for food and the releasing of invasive species into the environment.
But in the case of African elephants, human culture may, in the end, be the thing that drives them to the brink of extinction. Far too often, they aren't being killed for food or to make way for human expansion or agriculture, but for vanity.
On Wednesday, Feb. 27 (check local listings), PBS airs the National Geographic special "Battle for the Elephants," in which journalists Bryan Christy and Aidan Hartley reveal the criminal trade in "blood ivory" -- as Christy called it in an October 2012 article -- to be made into decorative and religious objects, particularly in China.
"The most shocking thing, I would say," explains Christy, "is that the Chinese government is building capacity for huger ivory consumption.

What will Rhino and Electro bring to The Amazing Spider-Man? James explores the history of the characters to find out...
Spoiler note: we've spoilers from the comics for Rhino, Electro and Gwen Stacy in this feature. Whether they all make it to the films remains to be seen!
The announcement of Paul Giamatti as The Rhino this week heavily suggests that Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be going the Batman Returns route, pitting its hero against two villains – Jamie Foxx having already been cast as Electro. But who are these characters? How do they fit into Spidey's life? And more importantly, how might they figure into the film?
The Rhino, aka Aleksei Sytsevich, was a small-time thug who took on the appearance of a Rhino when a synthetic, experimental costume was bonded to his skin. With his strength, speed and endurance enhanced by the suit,...

When Kristin Davis became involved with wildlife conservation, the combination of celebrity and cause probably seemed less incongruous. On holiday in a Kenyan safari park, the actor, who made her name as prim heiress Charlotte York in hit TV show Sex and the City, joined the hunt for a lost baby elephant when a Maasai elder waved down the truck in which she was travelling and raised the alarm.
She followed the trail for two days, and filmed what happened when the team found the animal, later named Chaimu after the lava rocks where she was found.

Following the release of shark thriller "Jaws," a generation of movie-goers were hesitant, at the very least, to set foot in the ocean (let alone go skinny dipping in it.) Yet, people can't seem to get enough shark attacks on the big screen, and we've created a video mashup of some of the craziest and most memorable shark attack movie scenes to date, just in time for Shark Week!
Although sharks in many of these films are depicted as evil predators, many of them are in fact preyed upon by humans.
According to the International Shark Attack File, there were 12 deaths from unprovoked shark attacks around the world last year. Yet, as File director George Burgess points out in a statement, "We're killing 30 [million] to 70 million sharks per year in fisheries -- who's killing who?"

Sharks prey on a variety of animals, but there are some lesser-known objects that sharks have also consumed. The Discovery Channel is airing their highly-anticipated Shark Week on Sunday, August 12th, and in anticipation, has released a list of some of the most bizarre shark snacks.
As of 2012, Shark Week has been on the air for 25 years. But for over 400 million years, sharks have been some of the biggest and baddest animals around. There are over 350 species, ranging in size from the enormous whale shark (the biggest fish in the sea!) to the teeny tiny deepsea dogfish shark.
Unfortunately, these kings of the sea need our help. According to advocacy group Oceana, "Of the 307 shark species assessed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (Iucn), 50 are listed as vulnerable, endangered or critically endangered, but only the white, whale and basking sharks are protected internationally under the Convention on International...

In the summer of 1969, Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson, a staunch conservationist, was reading an article about the impact of college teach-ins on anti-war activism when he had a flash of inspiration: What if the energy of these student teach-ins could also be harnessed to address environmental concerns?
It took Nelson a month to develop this idea into a practical plan, an in mid-September he issued a call for a national environmental teach-in day to be held sometime in the spring.

Donald Trump has long faced criticism over his environmental track record. Now, it's his sons who are in the spotlight for similar behavior.
Animal rights group PETA is criticizing the pair after newly released photos show the brothers on a safari in Zimbabwe last year, where they hunted and killed a slew of animals.

True Blood star Kristin Bauer is spearheading a new campaign to help protect chimpanzees held in captivity.
The actress has launched a petition urging American officials to take a stand against animal cruelty and put an end to the exploitation of chimpanzees, which are currently facing extinction.
In a letter to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, she writes, "Chimpanzees have been recognized as an endangered species by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service since 1990, but only wild chimpanzees are protected under the Endangered Species Act (Esa).
"Captive chimpanzees in the U.S. used in painful experiments, entertainment and kept as pets don't get any of the protections given to chimpanzees in the wild. Studies have shown that when people see chimpanzees used in commercials and interacting with people in the media, it leads them to believe that chimpanzees not only make good pets, but that they aren't even endangered."
Bauer is asking fans to get involved in the mission too - she's still looking for more than 100 followers to back the project and add their name to the petition in hopes of inspiring swift legal action.
Earlier this year, Bauer joined Alicia Silverstone and penned an open letter to the European Commission asking officials to uphold a proposed ban against cosmetic testing on animals.
