‘Ash’ Review: Aaron Paul’s Slick and Gory Sci-Fi Monster Movie
Image
Mondays, am I right? First you wake up on an alien planet in an outpost that’s leaking oxygen, surrounded by the bloody remains of your co-workers who you probably killed. Then I swear it’s all downhill from there. Don’t even ask me to bury their bodies until I’ve had my coffee! You wouldn’t like me when I’m cranky. I mean, you really wouldn’t like me.

“Ash” is a sci-fi/horror movie in the vein of “Alien” and “Planet of the Vampires” and “Galaxy of Terror” and “Pandorum” and “Event Horizon” and “The Thing” and “Leviathan” and “Screamers” and “The Cloverfield Paradox” and “Alien Cargo” and “Dracula 3000” and “Leprechaun 4: In Space.” It’s also clear that some of the people in the production liked playing “Dead Space,” “Doom,” “System Shock,” and/or “Portal,” to name a few. It’s hard to come...

Image
Yesterday, we shared the news that Scream Factory’s line-up of February 2025 4K releases consists of Ghosts of Mars (2001), Humanoids from the Deep (1980), Galaxy of Terror (1981), and Sick (2022). The product pre-order pages for those releases have since all gone up on the Scream Factory website – and the Sick page reveals that the movie is coming to 4K and Blu-ray with three audio commentaries and multiple interviews! You can check out the listing and make your pre-order at This Link. The Sick 4K Uhd and Blu-ray has a release date of February 4th.

Scream Factory is bringing Ghosts of Mars, Humanoids from the Deep, Galaxy of Terror, and Sick to 4K
Image
Blu-ray.com reports that Scream Factory has announced that they’ll be bringing four horror movies to 4K in February – and each one of these is a cool title that a lot of genre fans will be picking up. Scream Factory’s February 4K line-up consists of Ghosts of Mars (2001), Humanoids from the Deep (1980), Galaxy of Terror (1981), and Sick (2022)!

Directed by John Carpenter from a screenplay he wrote with Larry Sulkis, Ghosts of Mars is one of the least popular films in Carpenter’s filmography… but still, it’s Carpenter, so that means a 4K release is going to be a must-buy for a good number of fans. Here’s the synopsis: Long inhabited by human settlers, the Red Planet has become the manifest destiny of an over-populated Earth. Nearly 640,000 people now live and work all over Mars, mining the planet for its abundant natural resources. But one of those...

'Alien' Ending Explained - How Does Ripley's First Xenomorph Battle End?
Image
Ridley Scott's Alien is easily one of the best and most influential horror films of all time. It's a sci-fi horror masterpiece, bringing one of the greatest movie monsters ever designed to the silver screen with the sleek, physics-defying xenomorph. It's spawned a multimedia franchise from great games to comics to a forthcoming TV series, with its latest entry, Fede lvarez's Alien: Romulus, returning the franchise to its horror roots. The franchise has influenced a variety of subsequent horror entries from B-movie knockoffs like Galaxy of Terror to modern indie films like Sea Fever and Sputnik. One would be hard-pressed to find a modern horror fan who can't sling facts about protagonist Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) or draw a xenomorph from memory. With Romulus now in theaters, you may want a refresher of everything that went down in Alien's terrorizing finale, as the new entry is deeply connected...

‘Lily C.A.T.’ – Anime’s Gruesome ‘Alien’ & ‘The Thing’ Body Horror Hybrid You Never Knew Existed
Image
‘Alien: Romulus’ is right around the corner, so it’s the perfect time to check out ‘Lily C.A.T.,’ an anime body horror classic that’s a gory tribute to ‘Alien’ and ‘The Thing’.

“Confine them? We’re on a ship. We’re practically confined ourselves.”

Ridley Scott’s Alien is an iconic horror/science fiction hybrid that’s had its ups and downs as a film franchise, but remains an essential genre film 45 years later. Alien is such a tried and true property with limitless potential that it’s kind of remarkable that there hasn’t been an Alien animated series or in-universe anime that’s in the vein of The Animatrix that translates this iconic sci-fi horror property into animated madness where it can really let loose and not be confined by live-action’s limitations. An unreleased Alien vs. Predator anime is the closest thing that audiences have gotten to this,...

Alien: Romulus Cant Copy One Part Of The Original Movie (& Thats Good)
Image
Warning: This article features spoilers for Alien: Romulus's trailers

Alien: Romulus won't follow Alien's slow burn style due to revealing a major death in the trailer. Director Fede Alvarez's aggressive style necessitates a faster pace for Alien: Romulus. The reboot aims to blend the dark tone of Alien with the fast-paced action of Aliens for a new take.

Now that Alien: Romulus has given away a lot in its trailer, the Alien reboot cant copy one element of the original movies successful formula. A lot of movies tried to copy Aliens success after director Ridley Scotts seminal sci-fi horror movie was released in 1979. The rest of the Alien movies all expanded on Scotts setup with varying degrees of success, but a slew of Alien rip-offs predated even Aliens first sequel, 1986s Aliens. Movies like Galaxy of Terror, Creature, Inseminoid, Xtro, and Star Crystal all tried to replicate...

This Underrated $100M Sci-Fi Movie That's Now On Streaming Is Perfect To Watch While Waiting For Alien: Romulus
Image
Alien: Romulus, set for relase in 2024, aims to fix balance issues in the franchise. Director Fede Alvarez's reboot returns to the original's claustrophobic plot. Life (2017) shares creative DNA with Alien: Romulus, offering a similar small-scale horror experience.

2017s Life is underrated, but the upcoming Alien sequel Alien: Romulus makes a rewatch of the sci-fi horror perfectly timed. Sci-fi horror is a tricky blend to get right. For every hit like 1979s Alien, there is a slew of lesser efforts like 1985s Creature, 1981s Galaxy of Terror, or the same years unintentionally hilarious Inseminoid. Although the Alien movies have sometimes managed to capture the perfect balance between sci-fi world-building and straightforward scares, not all of them have gotten this right. Luckily, 2024s reboot Alien: Romulus looks set to fix this.

Director Fede Alvarezs reboot promises to bring the franchise back to its roots. Like the original movie, Alien: Romulus claustrophobic...

Everyone Forgets About James Cameron’s First Movie
Image
James Cameron's feature directorial debut with Piranha II paved the way for his iconic career in filmmaking. Despite creative differences, the experience of Piranha II shaped Cameron's future success in the industry. Cameron's mysterious fever-induced vision in Rome led to the creation of his iconic film The Terminator.

James Cameron made his directorial debut with the 1978 short science-fiction film Xenogenesis, which was made for approximately $20,000. The 12-minute film stars William Wisher, who later collaborated with Cameron on the screenplay for Terminator 2: Judgment Day, the 1991 sequel to the groundbreaking 1984 science-fiction action film The Terminator, which, of course, launched Cameron’s career.

Amid the filming of Xenogenesis, Cameron found employment as a production designer and special effects artist with Roger Corman’s distribution and production company, New World Pictures, for which he worked on the films Android, Battle Beyond the Stars, Galaxy of Terror, and Rock ‘n’ Roll High School...

Based on H.P. Lovecraft‘s The Thing On The Doorstep, Joe Lynch’s (Wrong Turn 2, Mayhem, “Creepshow”) new movie Suitable Flesh is finally headed to Shudder next month! And it’s not the only horror highlight arriving in January.

Look for “The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula” to close out its current season with the final two episodes airing on January 9 and January 16, after a brief holiday hiatus. Then there’s the anticipated splatter-comedy Destroy All Neighbors, which just debuted its gnarly practical effects-heavy trailer, set to debut on the streaming service on January 12.

AMC Original series “Preacher” arrives on Shudder on January 18. From Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the supernatural adventure series follows a preacher who enlists the help of a vampire and his ex to find God. James Cameron
All 13 James Cameron Movies, Ranked Worst to Best
James Cameron
James Cameron got his start in the film industry doing visual-effects work for low-budget sci-fi movies like “Galaxy of Terror” and “Battle Beyond the Stars,” but it didn’t take long for his wizardry to land him behind the camera. Within just a few films, Cameron put his stamp on the whole industry, crafting oft-imitated sci-fi hits on reasonable budgets before throwing huge loads of money into epic and sometimes troubled productions which, fortunately for everyone, pretty much always found an appreciative audience.

Watching Cameron’s films, from his original low-budget short to his trilogy of underwater documentaries, is a trip through his lifelong passions. You can see seeds of future blockbusters in early schlock like “Piranha II: The Spawning,” and you don’t even have to look that hard.

13. “Expedition: Bismarck” (2002)

The second film in James Cameron’s deep-sea-diving documentary trilogy is the dreariest. Cameron once again travels to the bottom of the ocean,...

6 Robert Englund Horror Movies You Can Stream on Screambox Now!
Image
Happy #RobertEnglundDay!

About one third of the 150+ acting credits accumulated over the course of Robert Englund’s 50-year career fall under the horror genre. Screambox is streaming five of them, along with the all-new documentary, Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story.

Here are six Robert Englund movies you can watch on Screambox now…

Galaxy of Terror

Before moving to Elm Street, Englund went to space for 1981’s Galaxy of Terror, the first of two back-to-back Alien knock-offs produced by Roger Corman. The film follows a ragtag spaceship crew on a rescue mission to a barren planet, where they encounter a deadly creature. In a slight twist on Ridley Scott’s sci-fi/horror classic, Galaxy of Terror uses its victims’ own fears against them — which, incidentally, is similar to Freddy’s modus operandi.

Englund plays the ship’s second technical officer, Ranger, but he’s not the only notable...

‘Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story’ Review
Image
Written by Gary Smart, Neil Morris | Directed by Christopher Griffiths, Gary Smart

Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story picks up with a 12-year-old Robert being sent to theatre camp getting attention from girls and being complimented by talk show host Steve Allen. That, especially the female attention, pointed him toward his career. And really, what better motivation can a young man have?

Best known for playing Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, Robert Englund already had a long history in the genre. dating back to Tobe Hooper’s Eaten Alive in 1976. Who could forget his entrance announcing “My name’s Buck, and I’m here to fuck!” and the criminally underrated Dead and Buried in 1981 as well as Galaxy of Terror and a host of others. And it’s continued well past his time as Freddy, most recently doing voice acting in the bizarre puppet film Abruptio.

Image
A Nightmare on Elm Street cinematographer Jacques Haitkin has passed away. His earliest titles include 1981's Galaxy of Terror and 1982's The House Where Evil Dwells before shooting 1984's A Nightmare on Elm Street, which got him the gig for 1985's Elm Street 2 as well as beginning a working relationship with director Wes Craven that included lensing 1989's Shocker and 1997's Wishmaster.

Jacques Haitkin, who served as the cinematographer on the first two Nightmare on Elm Street movies, has died. He was 72.

Haitkin died March 21 in San Francisco after a battle with Als and leukemia, his son Zak Haitkin told The Hollywood Reporter. “He always said he never worked a day in his life because he loved his job so much,” he noted.

Haitkin also manned a camera and/or did second-unit work on three Fast & Furious films, two Captain America movies and other action features including Cherry 2000 (1987), Last Man Standing (1995), The Expendables (2010), X-Men: First Class (2011), Kong: Skull Island (2017), Black Panther (2018), Venom (2018) and 21 Bridges (2019).

R.I.P.: A Nightmare on Elm Street cinematographer Jacques Haitkin has passed away
Image
As the beginning of his IMDb bio states, “Every horror film buff will recognize the name Jacques Haitkin.” Haitkin was the cinematographer on one of the most popular horror movies ever made, the 1984 Wes Craven classic A Nightmare on Elm Street (watch it Here). And while Craven didn’t return to the helm for A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge, Haitkin did return to be the cinematographer on that sequel. Sadly, we have to share the news today that Jacques Haitkin is no longer with us. This news was broken on the Facebook account of filmmaker Tony Randel, who is best known for directing Hellbound: Hellraiser II and worked with Haitkin on Galaxy of Terror, Ticks, Fist of the North Star, Rattled, One Good Turn, and Assignment Berlin.

Randel posted, “I knew Jacques Haitkin practically my entire career. We met on a Roger Corman horror/sci-fi epic – Galaxy of Terror.

James Cameron Helped Make This Overlooked Sci-Fi Horror Movie
Image
One of James Cameron's best movies is the 1986's Aliens, but before Cameron riffed on Ripley and xenomorphs in that movie, he helped make another Alien ripoff — Galaxy of Terror. Unlike Aliens, a film that is filled to the brim with Cameron's trademark touch for killer action set pieces, Galaxy leans further into the camp of Ridley Scott's original film. This sci-fi horror gem is dark, mysterious, and violent, a must-see for genre aficionados. While Cameron didn't direct the film, only serving as the production designer and second unit director, his presence is felt in every frame. While Galaxy of Terror goes headfirst into its H.R. Giger influence, it is also deeply Cameron, putting on display many of his visual trademarks before the man ever officially spearheaded his own production.

Fantasia 2022: ‘Blue Sunshine’ Review

Stars: Brion James, Richard Crystal, Zalman King, Robert Walden, Mark Goddard, Charles Siebert, Stefan Gierasch, Alice Ghostley, Ray Young, Bill Adler | Written and Directed by Jeff Lieberman

Showing as part of this year’s Fantasia Midnights program, Synapse Films premiered their restoration of writer/director Jeff Lieberman’s cult favorite Blue Sunshine. The 1977 film about former hippies suffering from homicidal acid flashbacks will be getting a 4K release at an undisclosed future date, and the image quality is noticeably better than on my DVD. But, what about the actual film? Glad you asked…

Blue Sunshine begins at a party where one of the guests is doing an impersonation of Rodan. “The artist?” asks one of the guests. “No, the monster” But a real monster is about to show up as Frannie loses his wig and his mind and begins shoving guests into the fireplace.

Hearthstone: Best Throne of the Tides Decks For the Mini-Set Expansion
Megan Fox in Rogue (2020)
Activision Blizzard is currently under investigation following accusations of harassment, discrimination, and fostering a hostile work environment. You can read more about the investigation here.

Hearthstone‘s new Throne of the Tides mini-set isn’t quite the game-changer that the Ccg’s full expansions usually are, but it still features enough new cards to shake up the competitive meta and open up some new deckbuilding possibilities.

As is usually the case with these mini-sets, Throne of the Tides certainly makes some of the game’s best decks just a little better than before. However, it’s clear that this expansion’s new cards will also help rescue a few deck archetypes that have struggled to really break into the game in a big way in recent weeks. How much it will end up shaking up the ranked play scene remains to be seen.

For now, here’s a look at...

A strange trend is taking place on British television: Opinionated American-style television channels have appeared for the very first time.

Both generally right-leaning in agenda, if you watch Gb News on any given night, you’ll see regular features about so-called “cancel culture” and “wokeism,” as well as a show hosted by the former populist Ukip leader Nigel Farage. Watch “Piers Morgan Uncensored” on TalkTV on any given night and you’ll see rather surreal opening titles consisting of a brain farting out the words “snowflake society,” followed by Fox News-style swooping sound effects and a monologue where Morgan tries to “cancel the cancel culture.”

So why is it all so strange? Well, despite heavy publicity, these shows and channels don’t appear to be resonating with U.K. audiences. “Piers Morgan Uncensored” has consistently shed viewers, from 317,000 overnight viewers on launch day, to less than 60,000 just over two weeks later.

Indie Horror Month 2022: Celebrating the Indie Horror Movies and Moviemakers During the 1980s
Image
Happy Friday, everyone! This time last week, we celebrated the amazing independent horror films that were released throughout the 1970s, so it only makes sense that we shift our focus today to all the great indie genre movies and moviemakers that helped make the ’80s one of the most unforgettable decades in horror.

Much like the 1970s, we saw a handful of eventual Masters of Horror establish themselves as genre storytellers on the indie side of things throughout the ’80s. On the East Coast, we saw an explosion of creativity come out of New York City with filmmakers such as William Lustig, Frank Henenlotter, Larry Fessenden, and Troma’s Lloyd Kaufman making their feature debuts in the world of horror during the ’80s. And even though Troma Entertainment was founded in 1974, the company really came into its own during the 1980s as well. The indie studio founded by the aforementioned...

Maren Morris Has Three Words for Twitter Haters. They’re Not ‘I Love You’
Image
Maren Morris just wanted to take the night off from the stream of online criticism — and worse — that she regularly encounters. Two days after the 2022 ACM Awards where she gave the live debut of “Circles Around This Town,” Morris fired off a tweet at the “turkey-necked fake Christian Karens” who swarm her mentions when she speaks up on an important issue or dares to show a little skin on her socials. “You keep me young,” she wrote, with a cheeky kissyface emoji.

“It was starting to really grate on me,...

The Best VR Headsets for Gaming: Oculus Quest 2, PlayStation VR, and More
Image
All products and services featured by IndieWire are independently selected by IndieWire editors. However, IndieWire may receive a commission on orders placed through its retail links, and the retailer may receive certain auditable data for accounting purposes.

While plenty of sci-fi movies have predicted a future dominated by virtual reality, the technology isn’t quite that widespread — yet. But more and more people are starting to discover what the world of VR, which allows you to strap on a headset and become fully immersed in a new environment, actually entails.

Games are of course one of the most popular ways to use VR technology, but other experiences, like virtual film festivals or concerts, are becoming more widespread. Most importantly, while the world is still very much in the thick of a pandemic, VR allows users to interact with crowds in real life.

Wrote IndieWire’s Eric Kohn, “The technology now...

Fifth Gear To Relaunch As Electronic Vehicle Format; Signs Former ‘Top Gear’ Host Rory Reid
Image
Exclusive: Discovery’s long-running motoring format Fifth Gear is to relaunch as an Electronic Vehicle (Ev) show and has installed former Top Gear host Rory Reid to present.

Fifth Gear: Recharged will air episodes weekly on streamer Discovery+ in the UK and UKTV network Quest later this year as All3Media-owned producer North One looks to take advantage of colossal growing interest in EVs, which has quickened due to the current UK gas crisis.

The original Fifth Gear ran for 28 seasons, first on Channel 5 and then Discovery channels History and Quest, before ending two years ago.

“Almost every car manufacturer in the world has bet their house on electric so this seemed like a sensible thing to do rather than a massive leap of faith,” said North One founder and Fifth Gear exec Neil Duncanson, who also produces coverage of Ev sporting format Formula-e.

“Electric was a byline in...

Foundation EP on Centering Black Women in Apple TV+'s Sci-Fi Epic: 'I Want to Reflect the Audience of Today'
Image
Apple TV’s ambitious sci-fi epic Foundation, premiering this Thursday, brings Isaac Asimov’s seminal trilogy to screen almost 70 years after the first novel was published.

The 10-episode first season centers on Dr. Hari Seldon (played by Jared Harris) and his efforts to preserve the future of civilization after predicting the fall of the Galactic Empire. David S. Goyer, who created the show and serves as showrunner, worked to ensure that the visually stunning series — which spans an entire millennium — didn’t feel like another Star Wars, which itself drew inspiration from Asimov’s books.

VR Growth, Opportunities Highlighted at Cannes Film Market
Image
One of the biggest conundrums for many working in the fledgling Xr sector is how to make money in the medium.

As part this week’s Cannes Xr program, Jingshu Chen, co-founder of VR entertainment platform VeeR will deliver a keynote that seeks to address the issue.

Beijing-based VeeR distributes, produces and invests in narrative VR content, and also operates the ZeroSpace VR cinema chain in China.

Chen’s July 9 keynote, titled “Cinematic VR content distribution and monetization,” comes at a time when the hype around the medium has well and truly popped.

Reflecting on the growing pains of VR, Chen refers to Gartner’s famed “Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies.” Deals such Facebook’s 2014 acquisition of Oculus led to a “peak of inflated expectations,” which gave way to a “trough of disillusionment” from 2017 amid sluggish headset sales, tech issues, a lack of content and many VR companies retreating from the sector.

Mythic Quest Recap: Fresh Starts and an 'Arrest' — Grade the Season 2 Finale
Image
Mythic Quest Season 2 tested Poppy and Ian’s friendship, but the pair still make quite a team.

And when the Apple TV+ workplace comedy’s sophomore season came to a close on Friday, fans saw the two creative directors set aside their egos — for the most part — for the greater good. First, they let David know they were going to finally complete the new game expansion and unite Hera and Zeus. There was just one problem: Ian had to concede that Anthony had been right all along and Hera was in fact too big for Mythic Quest’s servers.

Image
San Francisco, June 13 (Ians) Following two years of VR announcements and reveals, Upload VR has returned to E3 with its third annual showcase of the most inventive and intriguing games coming to VR.

According to The Verge, as the medium continues to mature year after year, it continues to be a platform for developers to innovate.

While not all of the games shown were brand new announcements, here are five games from the showcase that one can look forward to immersing themselves in soon.

First announced for Psvr earlier this year, 'Song in the Smoke' is a VR survival game and a departure for developer 17-Bit, better known for cartoony indie games like 'Skulls of the Shogun' and 'Galak-z'.

In a new developer diary, studio CEO Jake Kazdal explains how VR made him want to create not just a game but a fully living and breathing world. It's...

James Pickens Jr., Ellen Pompeo, and Chandra Wilson in Grey's Anatomy (2005)
Grey's Anatomy Season 17 Episode 17 Review: Someone Saved My Life Tonight
James Pickens Jr., Ellen Pompeo, and Chandra Wilson in Grey's Anatomy (2005)
After a dark, melancholic season, the finale ended on a lighter and happier note.

Of course, after those final moments of Grey's Anatomy Season 17 Episode 17, we'd have to exclude Amelia and Link from that equation. The healthiest relationship remaining on the series, ended with the two on totally different pages.

Man, it sucks.

It was another hour where they sped through the timeline, catching us up to current times. It was a necessary evil, but hopefully, it'll be the last of that for a while. The time jumps and haziness of being a year behind made things confusing throughout the season.

Maggie and Winston's wedding was a timeline marker for us, but even considering that we probably could've done without the pointless twist of their parents objecting to the wedding.

It seemed silly and nonsensical that after Maggie flew them into town, and they spent weeks quarantining for their quiet event in the yard,...
