[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for Blue Bloods Season 14 Episode 3, “Fear No Evil.”] Blue Bloods paid tribute to the late Treat Williams in Season 14 Episode 3, “Fear No Evil.” It did so by bringing back the daughter of Williams’ Lenny Ross, Tess, played by Simone Policano. Tess is an alcoholic experiencing ups and downs in her struggle to maintain sobriety. The bartender got herself into a bad fight that resulted in disorderly conduct and assault charges at the top of the episode, and she used her father’s Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck) courtesy call to try and get herself out of jail. Frank was shocked to meet with Tess in the booking room; he wasn’t sure why she had Lenny’s favor given to him by the commissioner. He’s heartbroken to learn that Lenny’s cancer had come back, and he died the night before. Tess’ violent outburst caused by a rowdy customer was driven by her grief.

Like so many before and after him, Frank Laloggia had a hard time when he first started out in the film business. Yet after booking several roles as an actor, the Rochester native seemed to finally catch his big break. He had been given the chance to write and direct a feature film. Unfortunately, Laloggia’s disillusionment with the industry set in while working on 1981’s Fear No Evil. Severe studio interference was the main cause of his disappointment, and as a result, Laloggia took an extended break from filmmaking. However, the time off between his debut and Lady in White proved to be beneficial; Laloggia returned from his long leave with what many regard as the best film of his career.
With a story partly based on a well-known urban legend from the director’s neck of the woods, it was understandable when people assumed Laloggia’s sophomore film...

Böse Spiele (Wicked Games)
With filming taking place in portions between April 2017 to May 2018, it’s been a painstakingly long post-production process for Austrian maestro Ulrich Seidl‘s Böse Spiele (Wicked Games) so it’s no wonder that we’re now celebrating a fourth appearance (watch Nicholas’ vid below) on our yearly list. This may have to do with Seidl putting more of his time and creative energy into shepherding films as a producer such as Kelly Copper & Pavol Liska’s Die Kinder der Toten (2019), Andreas Horvath’s Lillian (2019), Peter Brunner’s Luzifer (2021), and Kurdwin Ayub’s upcoming Sonne (likely to have its world premiere at a major film festival).…...

The Locarno Film Festival, long known as a safe haven for indie cinema, is taking a turn into genre territory while remaining true to
its origins.

Year after year a site par excellence for the most innovative premieres—in that respect an antithesis to the ensuing fall circuit—the Locarno Film Festival returns triumphant next month. Their 2021 lineup, per usual, mixes iconic names with complete unknowns and, admittedly, a head-scratcher or two. Abel Ferrara’s much-anticipated Zeros and Ones, sure. Gaspar Noé’s Vortex—makes sense. A new film from The Wild Boys director Bertrand Mandico? Great! But Shawn Levy and a Jennifer Hudson Aretha Franklin biopic?
However, new festival head Giona A. Nazzaro sees it as part of a steady influx, telling Variety “A festival can be quite highbrow and also entertaining at the same time. That is why for this year’s lineup we have selected several comedies and also some genre movies, as well as straightforward auteur films.” By that metric it’s more inclusive than almost any other major competition on the European circuit.

With Cannes right around the corner, two more prominent European film festivals announced their official lineups for 2021 this week. The 2021 Locarno Film Festival (the 74th edition of the event) is taking place August 4-14 and will feature the world premiere of Abel Ferrara’s “Zeroes and Ones,” plus the Melissa Leo-Frank Grillo starring thriller “Ida Red” from director John Swab. Perhaps the most prominent U.S. title in the Locarno lineup is “Respect,” the Jennifer Hudson-starring Aretha Franklin biopic that has already caught the eye of Oscar pundits here in the states. The film will screen out of competition, as will Ryan Reynolds’ long-delayed Disney-Fox tentpole “Free Guy.”
“A festival can be quite highbrow and also entertaining at the same time,” Nazzaro told Variety in a statement. “That is why for this year’s lineup we have selected several comedies and also some genre movies, as well as straightforward auteur films.

Made famous by directors such as Dario Argento, Mario Bava, and Lucio Fulci, Giallo (an Italian term) movies are murder mystery/horror thriller affairs that have always had a cult following. Unfortunately, there are very few modern Giallo movies made so I was pleased to see Nightmare Symphony get a release… and be able to review it!
Nightmare Symphony, a tribute to Lucio Fulci’s Nightmare Concert/A Cat in the Brain, in which Fulci himself played a tortured horror filmmaker haunted by his own bloody horror film visions; follows a director attempting to finish making his film while someone or something is killing off the people trying to finance and help him make it.
Perhaps what Nightmare Symphony does best is...

If the title Killdozer is familiar to you, you may have seen it before. Originally a novella by Theodore Sturgeon published in the November 1944 issue of Astounding Science Fiction magazine, a Marvel Comics book in April 1974, and later appearing in The Mammoth Book of Golden Age: Ten Classic Stories from the Birth of Modern Science Fiction Writing (1989), Killdozer was adapted into a made-for-tv movie which aired on Saturday, February 2, 1974. Sporting the tagline “Six men…playing a deadly game of cat and mouse…With a machine that wants to kill them,” and billed as A World Premiere ABC Saturday Suspense Movie, there is little suspense in this overly silly tale of a Caterpillar D9 that is enlisted by a team of construction workers who have been assigned to build a landing strip for an oil drilling company on an island near Africa.

Billy Goldenberg, the Emmy-winning composer and songwriter, died Monday night at his home in New York City. He was 84.
Goldenberg wrote the themes for such 1970s TV series as “Kojak,” “Harry O” and “Rhoda,” composed the pilot scores for “Night Gallery” and “Columbo,” and won Emmys for the TV-movie “Queen of the Stardust Ballroom” and miniseries “The Lives of Benjamin Franklin,” “King” and “Rage of Angels.”
He expanded his 1975 “Queen of the Stardust Ballroom” song score, with lyricists Marilyn and Alan Bergman, into the score of the 1978 Broadway musical “Ballroom,” directed and choreographed by Michael Bennett of “A Chorus Line” fame. It earned eight Tony nominations including Best Musical.
Reminiscing Wednesday about their collaboration on “Ballroom,” Alan Bergman told Variety: “Billy was one of the rare composers who was also a dramatist. Lots of people can write melodies, but you could tell Billy the situation, what the characters were feeling,...

For the final week of home media releases in September, genre fans have a lot to get excited over, as we have a multitude of titles coming our way on Tuesday. In terms of recent releases, the Child’s Play remake will hit multiple formats, and both the Jacob’s Ladder remake and the possession thriller Luz (which is Incredible) are heading to DVD as well. As far as classic horror titles being resurrected this week, Scream Factory is keeping busy with both Fear No Evil (1981) and John Carpenter’s Vampires, and Arrow Video has put together some special edition releases for The Hills Have Eyes Part 2, In the Aftermath, as well as both Hellraiser and Hellbound: Hellraiser II (both of which has previously been released by Arrow as part of their Scarlet Box set).

Coming up next week here in North America, Shout Factory's horror imprint Scream Factory is releasing a Blu-ray edition of the weirdo 1981 film, Fear No Evil. This no-budget shocker was directed by filmmaker and actor Frank Laloggia and even won a Saturn Award in 1982 for best low budget film. Here are a few of the taglines: I found the second one pretty funny: "Meet Andrew. The Road to Hell is paved with his Victims." "Alexandria High... class of '81 - All the students are going to Hell, except Andrew... he sent them there!" The plot is pretty simple, though a bit convoluted at the same time, if that makes sense: Andew Williams is a gangly high school student with...

I was never a strong student in high school, and it was completely for lack of trying; I had smart teachers with good intentions who tried their best to impart knowledge that I simply felt I had no use for. Ignorance, thy name is Scott and I’m certainly not proud of it. Anyway, I definitely never had the roadblocks facing the good students of Class of 1984 (1982), Mark L. Lester’s mesmerizing, brutal, dystopian look at the very worst of the educational system through the eyes of a teacher trying to wade his way through a barrel of diseased apples.
Distributed by United Film Distribution Company stateside in August with a world wide rollout continuing into ’83, Class of 1984 certainly rang some bells in the press; some critics offered effusive praise (such as Roger Ebert), while others were less kind. As a first time filmmaker, it takes a lot of courage to not follow the trends. The early ‘80s were flooded with slashers, and for good reason; they were, for the most part, instant ATMs to the studios. Thank God then (or Satan, your florist, a masseuse, whatever floats your boat) for Frank Laloggia, a New Yorker in his mid-20s who decided to go epic out of the gate with Fear No Evil (1981), a parable on Good Versus Evil, capital letters, with a strong Catholic bent filtered through Carrie’s prom dress.
Filmed in 1979 with initial funding coming from Laloggia and the rest from Avco Embassy (who ended up releasing it), this January release found little love from critics (except for Variety) but did pick up the Saturn Award for Best Low Budget Film – and well earned, indeed. Fear No Evil boasts high production values, (more or less) solid performances,...

When someone says they're "surviving high school," it can usually be considered an exaggeration, but when it comes to the teachers and students of Lincoln High, there's a literal truth in the phrase. Sinister students stalk the school's halls and don't hesitate to teach their own warped lessons to teachers after the bell rings in Mark L. Lester's Class of 1984. Scream Factory is releasing the early ’80s thriller in a Collector's Edition Blu-ray on April 14th, and we've been provided with two copies to give away to a couple of lucky Daily Dead readers.

Andrew Norris (Perry King, Lipstick, Mandingo), an idealistic and naive music teacher, has moved into a new community with his pregnant wife, Diane (Merrie Lynn Ross, General Hospital), only to find his new job is an academic abyss. Appalled by the crime-infested school,...

Detention doesn't solve problems in Class of 1984. The atrocious actions of the unruly students call for a far more intense form of discipline that Mr. Norris is pushed to dish out in the early ’80s thriller from Mark L. Lester. Soon, you can experience Class of 1984’s extracurricular revenge like never before, as Scream Factory's Collector's Edition Blu-ray of the film comes out on April 14th. Ahead of its release, we have the trailer and two clips from the Blu-ray, giving us a look at a young Michael J. Fox and a gun-wielding Roddy McDowall.

With their new film Inside Llewyn Davis hitting UK cinemas this week, here’s our indispensable guide to the richly inventive and playful world of brothers Joel and Ethan Coen.
A is for…
A Woman, a Gun and a Noodle Shop
This is the international title of the 2009 Chinese remake of Blood Simple, which Ethan and Joel both received a story credit for. A distinct change of pace and style for House of Flying Daggers director Zhang Yimou, the tale was transposed from a Texas town to a noodle shop in a harsh desert landscape of the Gansu province.
B is for…
Botched criminal act
Take a look at any of the duo’s films, and very little actually goes to plan for the characters. Even latest creation Llewyn Davis encounters more than his fair share of obstacles, but many of their films in the crime genre include a disastrous...

The devil. He does have a way of showing up at the worst possible time and throwing a wrench into even the best laid plans. In celebration of the release of Devil's Due on January 17th, we bring you our Top 5 Antichrist Films.
For honorable mentions we've got to include Michael Langdon (spawn of Tate and Vivien) from "American Horror Story: Murder House," the original season. Of course Hellboy holds at least some claim to the throne as well.
Research gave us the unforgettable name of Randall Flagg, who appears across many of the works of Stephen King as another possible antichrist. But the most amusing has to be Alan Moore's depiction of Harry Potter (although never named outright, it's quite clear whom he's referring to) in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen comic as the true son of Satan (click here if you're unfamiliar with the reference).

How does one discover a movie like The Wizard of Speed and Time in 2012/2013? Isn’t it antiquated? Isn’t it beyond overdone and dated and doesn’t the premise just fall apart in the face of what we know about Hollywood; the whole movie is one great big farce filled with anti-truths and nonsensical ramblings of a talented special effects man from 1980-whenever? First of all, none of what you have just read is true save that Mike Jittlov is one talented effects man who happens to have a keen eye for film making and a knack for storytelling that touches the heart, inspires and yet delivers a message all at the same time. This is the kind of movie you want you kids to watch if you want them to grow up to be filmmakers like you never became. Follow your dreams. Learn how to accomplish your goals and never give up.

A while back I reviewed the wicked gothic-industrial album Xs and the Eyes by indie artist Anders Manga, which was packed to the brim with horror movie references (including the awesome Exorcist spin “I Cast You Out”) and heavy-beat electro nightmare soundscapes, all structured around Anders' mesmerizing and chilling vocals. Since then, he's founded a new project that retains that whole doomy devilish vibe, but this time on a foundation of old-school psychedelic occult doom, taking its name from the creepy song “Bloody Hammer” by legendary alt-rock icon Roky Erikson, from his horror-themed album The Evil One. Based in Charlotte, North Carolina, the Bloody Hammers formed within the past year and their self-titled debut album has now dropped on CD and vinyl. Along with Erikson, the band also cites creative influences ranging from Alice Cooper and Black Sabbath to Nick Cave and Bauhaus; from the Misfits and the Cramps to David Bowie and Joy Division.

It’s the month of October. It’s Halloween. No, not the day itself, but tis the season. That means we need to focus on some truly excellent 80’s horror surrounding our beloved holiday. Sure we could give the rehash job to Halloween and its subsequent sequels, but that’s not entirely in spirit of the game although I can assure you that I’m working on something that focuses on the Carpenter magnum opus. Today we’re going to focus on some horror flicks that are about Halloween, but aren’t John Carpenter’s Halloween. Let’s talk about The Day After Halloween, Trick or Treats, Lady in White in our first It Came From 1980X triple feature offering. Each of these movies incorporates something of the Halloween spirit and only one of them actually gets any street cred for being an honest to goodness creep out. There’s...
