Jess Tyler
- Kady Tyler: That feels so good, Jess. Good, good hands... What's wrong?
- Jess Tyler: It ain't right.
- Kady Tyler: Feels good to me. Does it to you?
- Jess Tyler: It just ain't right.
- Kady Tyler: It's right if it's good.
- Jess Tyler: You're my daughter, Kady.
- Kady Tyler: I'm a woman, too.
- Jess Tyler: [hot day, and now a barefoot, bare-legged blond sits waiting on his porch] Miss?
- Kady Tyler: Hello.
- Jess Tyler: Something you want?
- Kady Tyler: [appraising him] How can I tell if I don't know what you got?
- Jess Tyler: [takes off his hat, regarding her wearily] Maybe you're making a mistake.
- [comes up the steps]
- Jess Tyler: Maybe you're looking for somebody else's place. Not mine.
- [goes inside]
- Kady Tyler: I'm looking for you.
- Jess Tyler: How do you know?
- [comes out again with milk pail]
- Jess Tyler: You ain't seen me before.
- Kady Tyler: You're Jess Tyler.
- Jess Tyler: Who are you?
- Kady Tyler: Just somebody you might like to know.
- Jess Tyler: I don't like people making fun.
- [leaves to milk cow]
- Kady Tyler: Maybe I'm not.
- Jess Tyler: [milking cow, and Kade is about to drink some fresh produce] That ain't gonna be cold.
- Kady Tyler: I like it warm, with foam on top of it.
- Kady Tyler: I couldn't take it anymore... listening to the laughs and the whispers... as I walked down the street with my stomach out, and... and I hear people say "that's Belle's daughter, all right, that's... one kid who listened good to her parent." Janey's taking care of the baby. She really knows how. But I had to get away.
- [all the time washing dishes]
- Jess Tyler: You don't have to do that.
- Kady Tyler: Oh, I don't mind, I want to. I like doing things for a man.
- Jess Tyler: Then you'll make somebody a good wife.
- Kady Tyler: Maybe. But I ain't wanna get married... right now.
- Jess Tyler: What are you planning on doing?
- Kady Tyler: [looks at him full-on] Keep you from being lonely.
- [he eyes her warily]
- Kady Tyler: I come to stay with you.
- Jess Tyler: [busying himself with cutlery] You can't do that, Kade. Uh-uh, I'm sorry, you just can't.
- Kady Tyler: [shakes head in dismay] Don't make me go.
- Jess Tyler: Look... get your stuff together, and... I'll run you wherever you wanna go. But... you just can't stay here. Please?
- Kady Tyler: [sobbing] Jess, I'm your daughter... and I got nowhere to go.
- [he comforts her, hugging her against him]
- Kady Tyler: [brought home by car that just dropped her off] Morning, Jess.
- Jess Tyler: [demanding] Who was that?
- Kady Tyler: A friend.
- Jess Tyler: [yelling] Who was he?
- Kady Tyler: [obviously the worse for wear] Ooh, don't yell!
- Jess Tyler: Did you lay up with him last night?
- Kady Tyler: If I did, would you get your shotgun... and make him marry me?
- Jess Tyler: Where was you last night?
- [she dunks her head in the trough, no answer]
- Jess Tyler: Kade!
- Kady Tyler: [streaming wet hair] I met a girl, and... we got to be friends. I stayed with her when it got too dark.
- Jess Tyler: What was her name?
- Kady Tyler: I forgot.
- Jess Tyler: That was no girl who brought you home.
- Kady Tyler: No.
- Jess Tyler: Who was it then?
- Kady Tyler: [filling a pail with water] Her brother.
- [walks away carrying it]
- Jess Tyler: [following her into the house] What did you do last night?
- Kady Tyler: Enjoyed ourselves. But I don't think you'd like that.
- [goes towards her room, about to drop the sheet she had hung over the entrance]
- Kady Tyler: Excuse me, Jess.
- Jess Tyler: What you gonna do?
- Kady Tyler: Woman's business.
- Jess Tyler: [in bar] Ready to go?
- Kady Tyler: Have another drink, Jess. I'm gonna be off.
- Jess Tyler: Where are you going?
- Kady Tyler: Billy Roy's got a brand-new convertible car, and he's gonna take me for a ride.
- Jess Tyler: Why?
- Kady Tyler: Because sometimes... people need to be made to feel good.
- Jess Tyler: [shakes his head] Kade, come...
- [but she's going to the two men waiting for her, and he grabs her by the shoulder]
- Jess Tyler: Now, Kade!
- Billy Roy: Listen, Pa, take it easy, we don't wanna have no trouble.
- Jess Tyler: But I am her daddy, and she is staying here with me.
- Billy Roy: Not like she wants to stay, old man, but right now, she wants to go for a ride, so that's what we're gonna do. Sit down and have a glass of prune juice, loosen up.
- Jess Tyler: I've been nothing to her for ten years. It's hard being something after so long a time.
- Rev. Rivers: You can only be a daddy to her, Jess. Nothing more.
