New wave cop drama
Leofwine_draca22 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A 'new wave' cop drama from Ronny Yu, later best known for moving to Hollywood and shooting various sequels. His crisp, inspired direction is the best part of this gritty little drama which focuses on character over incident and paints a rather bleak portrait of modern Hong Kong in the process. Bai Ying is a fatherly cop and Kent Cheng his partner, both hunting for a serial killer with a passion for murdering prostitutes. I was astonished to see an unrecognisable Alfred Cheung (sans glasses) in this one, in a very different kind of role from the one he would play lots of times later on in his career. The film has a fair amount of bloodshed and nudity although it's not action packed by any means, but it does the job and has a certain classiness to it making it a decent watch.

Not great but enjoyable Hong-Kong cop movie
AntonyBeau29 November 2020
This early hong-kongese action movie is about an Dirty Harry type inspector running after a psychopath killer. We see the point of view of both characters and it sometimes feels like the movie is more about the killer, who's lost his mother at a young age and was traumatized by her violent suicide. The scenery of the city ils colourful, the action is fast (a murder scene is particularly violent) and the movie know when to slow its pace and install some character momentum : overall, I think it's worth a watch if you're into HK movies (why on earth does it have a rating of only 3.5 ?).
