- [Lily is on her first tour with Buck's band]
- Bo: Who all in here has got a college education?
- Lily Ramsey: I do.
- Bo: You do? Well, run in the back there and get me a beer, would you? I'd hate to see your education go to waste.
- Garland Ramsey: Buck, we've done a lot of livin' on this old road, you and me.
- Buck Bonham: Yeah, we have - 20 some odd years.
- Garland Ramsey: I started out, didn't have nothin' but a guitar and a hard on.
- Buck Bonham: Well, you still got your guitar.
- Buck Bonham: Oh, you're heavy. You weigh a ton. What have you been eatin'? Cannon balls? You smell like a cess pool.
- Buck Bonham: [singing] On the road again, Like a band o' gypsies we go down the highway, We're the best of friends, Insisting that the world keep turning our way, And our way, Is on the road again, I just can't wait to get on the road again...
- Viv Bonham: When your on the road do you sleep with many other women, Buck?
- Buck Bonham: [pause] No, I don't.
- Viv Bonham: Not many or none at all?
- [no reply]
- Viv Bonham: I was feelin' really down the other night. I had a glass of wine - three, actually. You left a half a joint layin' on your desk and I smoked it. I don't know how you could possibly smoke that stuff very often and not want to go to bed with someone when you're all alone.
- [pause, no reply]
- Viv Bonham: I got to finish makin' potato salad for tomorrow.
- Buck Bonham: [hugging Viv, at night, outside] I hadn't heard a screen door slam or smell a fresh cut of hay all summer. Or, you.
- Buck Bonham: When I was a kid, I used to have to churn butter for my Mom. Now, that was hard work.
- Viv Bonham: Your Mama told me you never did a lick of nothin', except hide down by the creek playin' that $5 guitar.
- Buck Bonham, Viv Bonham: [singing] Coming close together with a feeling that I've never known before in my time...
- Buck Bonham: [singing] Turning on the world the way you smiled upon my soul as I lay dying, And healing as the colors in the sunshine and the shadows of your eyes
- Viv Bonham: Waking in the morning to the feeling of your fingers on my skin, Wiping out the traces of the people and the places that I've been
- Buck Bonham, Viv Bonham: Teaching me that yesterday was something that I never thought of trying...
- Viv Bonham: Honey, please, I don't want to get into that again. Now, come on, we've been through that before. I cannot live on a bus with 14 people. I can't. I've tried. It baffles me. And every time I ask you for a real answer, you say, "Come on out on the road."
- Buck Bonham: That is a real answer.
- Jamie Bonham: I don't have any music in me, Daddy.
- Buck Bonham: Sure you do. Everybody's got music in 'em.
- Garland Ramsey: Oh Lily, one night stands. It gets real rowdy on that bus and in them motels. Partyin' and drinkin'. You don't want to go on the road.
- Lily Ramsey: How do you know what I want. You don't know anything about me, do you, Daddy?
- Emmylou Harris: [singing] So you think you're a cowboy but you're only a kid, With a mind to do everything wrong...
- Lily Ramsey: Hey, it was just a little gag.
- Cotton Roberts: Shut up, you bitch. I know how you got this gig - and it wasn't playing guitar unless you were playing it in *bed*.
- Buck Bonham: [singing] Funny a woman can come on so wild and free, And insist I don't watch her undress or watch her watch me, And then stand by my bed and shiver as if she were cold, Just to lie down beside me and touch me as if I were gold, One night of love don't make up for six nights alone, But I'd rather have one than none Lord 'cause I'm flesh and bone...
- Brag (Cotton's manager): Confederate flags. Confederate flags work the same way the hats do. Now, everybody that sees one is gonna want one. Plus, it reminds them to go to the concert. Now, they get to the concert and we gonna have the cloth version on a stick and we gonna charge five dollars a damn shot for it. Ain't gonna cost us anything but cloth and dye and a stick and we gonna make us a fortune. And I'll guaran-damn-tee it! Yes, sir!
- Garland Ramsey: A whole road's open to you now.
- Buck Bonham: Yeah. I just take them old songs out there and sing 'em to a whole bunch of new people, Garland.
- Garland Ramsey: You know it's too bad you can't come up with some new songs - to sing to them old friends of yours.
- Buck Bonham: [singing] Sometimes it's nice to have somebody nice to be close to, Lord knows I've been there before you and I understand
- Buck Bonham, Lily Ramsey: If you're feeling salty, well then I'm your tequila, If you've got the freedom, well I've got the time, There ain't nothing sweeter than naked emotions, So you show me yours, hon, and I'll show you mine...
- Buck Bonham: You silly old bastard.
- Garland Ramsey: Now that's a goddamn good place to start the conversation, 'cause that's a damn good description of what you've been the last month or so.
- Buck Bonham: [singing] If you had not a-fallen, Then I would not have found you, Angel flying too close to the ground...
- Police Officer: [Buck and Garland stumble into to the rest stop] I hope neither of you is driving.
- Buck Bonham, Garland Ramsey: [each points a finger at the other] He is.
- Garland Ramsey: We're headin' for Texas. Hang on, dammit! I'm gonna kick this son of a bitch in the ass - and we're goin' home!
- Brag (Cotton's manager): I got me a new merchandisin' outfit - oh, god damn - I come up a flash last night! Why don't we buy us a carload of Texas straw hats from Hong Kong, China or someplace. Now look, straw wouldn't be but about 85 cents to them damn chinks.
