After unwittingly using his skills to obtain military secrets, a gambler is pursued by a police officer who happens to be his doppelganger.

Jai (Amitabh Bachchan) is an expert gambler, and has been so as long as he can remember, and has never lost a game. These skills bring him to the attention of the underworld don Saxena (Utpal Dutt), who is interested in hiring him for winning large amounts of money from rich people and then influencing them into doing whatever he wants. Jai agrees to do so, and plays successfully, though unknowingly to entrap a patriotic Indian named Nath (Jagdish Raj) who works for the government. After losing large amounts of money, he is blackmailed into revealing the blueprints of a top-secret military laser weapon that hit any target within 50 miles. When the Indian police come to know of this, they assign the case to Inspector Vijay, who is asked to apprehend Jai at any cost. The only problem is that Inspector Vijay is Jai's look-alike, and is not at all a good gambler. After this Jai and Vijay's professional and personal lives get confusingly mixed up as Jai and Vijay both coincidentally are sent to Rome where Vijay is sent to retrieve evidence against underworld don Saxena and Jai is onto a money-making scheme where he would marry his rich girlfriend Mala (Neetu Singh) to inherit her money. Mala however mistakens Vijay for Jai and Vijay decides to go along with this to find out who his double is. Jai meanwhile meets Shabnam (Zeenat Aman), a club dancer who mistakens Jai for Vijay and is working for a spy ring. She has been sent to seduce Vijay and stop him on his mission to retrieve evidence against the underworld don Saxena and Jai is only more willing to have a little fun before he sets about on his latest money-making scheme.—gavin@sunny_deol2009@yahoo.com

He gambles with rich and influential people so that he can win huge amounts of money from them and in the process tricks them into doing what he wants. He manages to do so with an employee of the government and obtains certain confidential secrets of the military. These skills bring him to the attention of the underworld don Ratan Das (Madan Puri), who is interested in hiring him to win large amounts of money from rich people and then influencing them into doing whatever he wants. Jai agrees to do so, and plays successfully, though unknowingly to entrap Nath (Jagdish Raj) who works for the government. After losing large amounts of money, he is blackmailed into revealing the blueprints of a top-secret military laser weapon that can hit any target within 50 miles and is wanted by another underworld don named Saxena (Utpal Dutt). Ratan works for Saxena. When the plans are delivered, Saxena plans to sell them to the highest bidder. Ramesh (Prem Chopra) is Saxena's right hand man.

When the Indian police come to know of this, they assign the case to Inspector Vijay (also Amitabh Bachchan) who is a lookalike of Jai. Vijay apprehends some tapes which has a message encoded by Saxena via some dance moves by Monica (Helen). Vijay arrests Monica, but she is shot by Saxena's shooter Sethi (Roopesh Kumar). Vijay sees Sethi escaping. Now Saxena needs a new dancer for the encoded messages & Ramesh gets his fiance Shabnam (Zeenat Aman) (a cabaret dancer). Saxena tells Sethi to hide in Rome. Saxena entrusts the responsibility of finding a buyer for the stolen tech to his operative in Rome, Marconi (Sujit Kumar). He also instructs Marconi to kill Sethi, but Sethi finds out and injures Marconi instead. Sethi steals the code books of Saxena's operations & contacts Mumbai police, which gets routed to Vijay. Sethi asks Vijay to come to Venice, Lido Casino with $50,000. The call is intercepted by Ramesh & Saxena, who are desperate to kill Sethi.

Jai and Vijay are both coincidentally sent to Rome. Vijay is sent to retrieve evidence against underworld don Saxena by his former henchman Sethi and Jai is onto a money-making scheme (from Ratan Das) where he would marry his rich girlfriend Mala (Neetu Singh) (Mala's father had promised her hand in marriage to Ratan's son & Ratan didn't have a son, so he adopts Jai, so that he can lay a claim to Mala's wealth) to inherit her money. Meanwhile Saxena figures out that Vijay is the inspector on the case & asks Ramesh to depute Shabnam to get close to Vijay & extract all info from him.

Mala however meets Vijay at the Rome airport and Vijay decides to go along with this to find out who his lookalike is. Jai meanwhile meets Shabnam (Zeenat Aman), a club dancer who mistaken him for Vijay and was sent by Saxena to stop him on his mission to discover Saxena's plans. Ramesh arranges for their flight to be delayed in Egypt which gives Shabnam enough time to seduce Jai (whom she thinks is Vijay). Ramesh abducts Jai in Egypt. Jai convinces Ramesh and Shabnam that he is in fact Jai, & not Vijay. Ramesh intends to now use Jai to pretend to be Vijay and meet Sethi in Venice to get the codes. Meanwhile Ramesh also asks Marconi to track the real Vijay, who Marconi sees getting in the car with Mala. Vijay & Mala check into Hilton, where Vijay leaves instructions to route his calls to his room.

Mala takes Vijay to Lisbon to meet her father. While Jai, Ramesh & Shabnam arrive in Rome & check into the Hilton. Jai starts getting messages that were intended for Vijay. he even receives the $50,000 which were meant as bribe for Sethi. Jai feels trapped by Ramesh, who has taken his passport & Jai knows that after eliminating Sethi, Ramesh & Marconi will kill him. Shabnam has fallen for Jai and vows to protect him. she also tells him the truth behind the deal with Sethi & promises Jai to help him not let national secrets fall in the hands of India's enemies

In Lisbon, Vijay falls in love with Mala. He checks in with his contact in Rome, who is astonished to hear that Vijay is in Lisbon & understands that there is a duplicate who is interfering in Govt work. He recalls Vijay to Rome immediately & when he gets there sends him on to Venice Jai meets Sethi at the designated casino in Venice, and manages to get the tapes and code-books after a fight, without giving him the money. Jai manages to escape from Marconi & Ramesh who were waiting to kill Jai. Now Jai goes to Lisbon and Vijay enters the casino in Venice. In the casino, Sethi attacks Vijay and he has to escape.

Jai finally reaches Mala's house. Ramesh, Marconi & Shabnam also get to Lisbon and trace Jai. Jai has to escape again. He finally tells the truth to Mala and her father that he is not Ratan Das's son, but his partner. He tells Mala that Ratan wants to gobble up her wealth which is why he wanted her to marry him. The guy who came earlier was his duplicate, whom he doesn't know. Jai talks about his real father, whom Mala's father knows. He reveals that Vijay is actually Jai's twin bro. Jai and Vijay are actually long-lost twin brothers. Now Ramesh and Marconi reach Mala's house. They take the tapes and the code-book and set a time bomb in the house. Marconi & Ramesh leave for the Hotel.

Now Vijay reaches the house & diffuses the bomb and rescues Mala & Jai. Upon learning the truth about being bros, Vijay joins hands with Jai and reaches Ramesh's hotel where Shabnam has left a message for Vijay to reach Madrid. At Madrid Jai and Vijay intercept Ramesh & Marconi & get the tapes and code-book from them. when Saxena finds out about the twins, he calls Ratan Das, who abducts Jai's family (which now includes Mala and her father, who had reached India by the way to meet Jai's father & Mala's father's old friend). Jai and Vijay have to team up to rescue the family. They kill Ratan Das in the process, but Saxena is arrested by the police before he can escape India in his private plane.
