Sex & Nudity

  • A man is seen in his room in his underwear. A very quick glimpse of his penis can be seen before he sits down and the camera moves.
  • A nude body is seen hanging from a tree. Male genitals are clearly seen and visible for a couple seconds.
  • In the "Redux" version of the film (not the original) we see three soldiers in a helicopter stripping playboy girls down to their bare breasts and then sex is implied. The original version of the film doesn't have this scene.
  • Male nudity (never explicit or provocative), brief sight of posters of woman posing in provocative ways, sometimes with breasts exposed (very brief), and a scene of women dancing sexual as entertainment for the troops, no nudity and not very graphic.
  • Multiple scenes of male genital nudity, including main character at the beginning, a corpse in a rolled over coffin, a soldier running and two corpses hanging.
  • We see a man's penis at the very start of the film for a half second. Not sexual at all.
  • In the 3 and a half hour Redux version of the film two women are seen topless for about two minutes.
  • There is almost no sexual content at all in the theatrical cut. There are scenes with non-sexual male nudity and some posters on the walls but otherwise nothing sexual.
  • The "Redux" version of the film has some sexual content including a few scenes of female nudity on top of what is in the original film.
  • The Redux of the film has a scene where women are topless for a long time.
  • A soldier on a boat is bottomless and we see his buttocks
  • There are several posters of nude women wearing bikinis and exposing bare breasts.
  • There are some sexual references among the soldiers.

Violence & Gore

  • A soldier is seen laying on the ground with his leg blown off and lots of blood surrounding him. The scene is pretty brief though.
  • Civilians and soldiers alike are gunned down and killed.
  • A portion of the film is spent in a surreal kingdom where nude and mutilated corpses are strewn around. We see the bodies hanging and missing limbs, severed heads laying around and the natives constantly being a threat to the characters.
  • A man punches a mirror and cuts his hand. Blood is shown on his torso as well as on the bed sheets and all over the place. This is a disturbing scene of war PTSD.
  • A man is killed with a machete in a heavily edited sequence. Some blood is seen as he is killed but this is intertwined with a more graphic image of animal death so it appears pretty tame.
  • There are bloody dead bodies shown throughout.
  • Lots of gunfights and explosions throughout.
  • A man is impaled with a spear and killed. Blood is seen on the tip and his chest.
  • A group of civilians are gunned down by soldiers after bombing a helicopter.
  • The violence in this movie is more disturbing than anything and there really isn't a lot of blood.
  • While not as violent as a lot of other war movies, the imagery throughout is more comparable to a horror movie and it is more disturbing and unsettling.
  • While the visual depiction of violence in this film is moderate, the disturbing nature of the scenes cranks it up quite a bit and the film can be upsetting to watch.
  • The violence is much more disturbing than it is graphic however this makes the combat more impactful.
  • Multiple heads are seen in the background, as well as skulls on spikes.
  • The violence in this film, visually, is fairly moderate. There are shootings but they are only partially onscreen for the most part and when they are minimal amounts of blood are shown. That being said there are disturbing scenes in this and sights of gore after violence.
  • The first half of the film is full of war violence and explosions. The shootings are not graphic as they are mostly from afar and without blood, but the moments that depict aftermath of violence are quite gory. This includes the streets being riddled with corpses (blood is seen on them) and a moment where a man has his guts spilling out and begs for water which he doesn't receive.
  • The second half of the film is more like a thriller with occasional scenes of violence.
  • The most disturbing scene of the film depicts an innocent family being ruthlessly gunned down on a boat because of suspicion that they have weapons. Blood is seen splattered all over the place and one of the people, a teenage girl, is still alive gasping for air. One of the soldiers abruptly shoots her and executes her. It is revealed they were only hiding a puppy.
  • A teenage soldier is shot and killed in a sudden attack. Blood is seen all over the place including his chest as he dies and the scene has upsetting audio of his mother telling him to come home.
  • Intense war violence throughout. Accurately depicts wartime during the late 60's
  • There is a graphic scene of a buffalo being beheaded by a tribe. This was authentic behind the scenes and so the gore is real.
  • A man is beheaded offscreen and then his severed head is dropped into his friends lap when he is tied up. The gory sight is seen for quite a while before the scene ends.

Profanity

  • "Nigga" is used by black soldiers
  • There is language used in the film accurate to how soldiers talked in Vietnam. That being said it isn't too pervasive.
  • The theatrical cut of the film has 86 uses of fuck and the "Redux" cut of the film has 94 uses of fuck.
  • "Fuck" is used 86 times. "Shit" is used a few time, as well as uses of words referring to the male genitals, a-words, and uses of God damn/God damnit, and other less swear words.
  • Jim Morrison's "The End" uses "fuck" multiple times in one part of it; this part can be heard in one scene of the film.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Marijuana is smoked a couple of times.
  • Cigarettes are smoked consistently throughout the movie.
  • Alcohol is used both abusively and socially used throughout the movie.
  • It is implied a soldier is on acid in one scene
  • Early in the movie, a soldier is seen drinking himself to limit while waiting for his assignment.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Colonel Kurtz is an ex commando and he creates his own little kingdom of savage villagers. He's developed a philosophy that savage killing is genius and necessary.
  • This film is very dark and disturbing.
  • The lighter and/or the semi-comedic scenes within the film add a little bit of relief between intense scenes but other than that the entire film is incredibly thought provoking.
  • This film is more comparable to a horror film as it has surreal imagery, unsettling images of gore and an overall feeling that your descending into insanity.
  • The combat scenes may be intense to some

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The final killing scene is very intense, as we see a (real) buffalo's head being cut off, as the main character kills another man with a machete.
  • A scene where a boy is gunned to death on the boat is extremely emotional. A few of the men in the boat cry harshly in reaction to his death which makes it even more hard to watch.
